Please clear that up for us.

Damn right. And they're now stuck with UNT too.
Re: Serious Conference Realignment Discussion
I think the next domino move is made in South Bend.
ND cannot survive as an “independent” in the era of NIL and Super Leagues.
SEC sent a shot to Pac12 and Big10 this year basically saying there is the SEC and then there is all the other loser Conferences.
Re: Serious Conference Realignment Discussion
I believe those who control P5 football will always save a spot for ND football as long as ND football goes undefeated or only has one loss. The TV guys will always have a special place for ND football.

Well, since the days of the BCS Notre Dame has to go undefeated in the regular season or they will not get a shot to win a NC. No other schools HAVE to go unbeaten to make the CFPs...well, no other P5s, obviously a G5 has to be 13-0 to even be on the board for consideration. ND plays a representative schedule and joining a P5 conference, especially the weak ACC, would make ND's overall SOS weaker, not stronger. Yes, in recent years some of ND's traditional rivals have sucked, namely USC, Stanford, and Boston College, but historically have been Top 25 teams.
I don't think ND's new coach is up to the task, so I expect to see some 8-4/9-3 type seasons become the norm.

I think if the Big 12 doesn't expand or expands without them SMU is headed to the Mountain West.
And I think that decision has already been made. North Texas wouldn't have gotten in otherwise.

Dukes To Open Season Against MTSU | College | dnronline.com
Quote:
James Madison officially announced its season opener for the 2022 football season on Tuesday, as the Dukes will host Middle Tennessee on Sept. 3.
It’s a historic game for the Dukes. JMU will be just the second transitioning FBS team to host an FBS squad in its opener, joining Buffalo who did it in 1999.
JMU dropped its home game against FCS foe Weber State, which was previously scheduled for the same date, to make room for the Blue Raiders.
The Dukes are working to become the first team in history to transition to the FBS in one year, which requires a team to host five FBS games in a season.
JMU athletic director Jeff Bourne hinted at it in an interview with ESPN Harrisonburg program director Dave Riggert on Dec. 10.
“Our goal is to try to reduce football from the NCAA guideline of transition at two years down to one year,” Bourne said. “The [Sun Belt] could give us four and we need to get one.”
My guess this is a game of chess for Tech/MT. We help JMU now, when the next realignment comes around, we've built good will. Not that I want to necessarily be in SBC.

I sure wish LA Tech could go to the Mountain West with 'em.

When that happens, I expect some reshuffling to happen.
The Big 12 will possibly take a member from the Mountain West (probably CSU) leaving them at 11. I'd expect them to call up Rice, SMU, Tulsa and Wichita State. That would get the MTN West to 14 members in Olympic sports and football as Hawaii and Wichita State would complement each other.
The AAC would be devastated as they probably also lost a team or two to the BIG 12 as well, most likely Memphis After defections, the league could probably look like:
Temple
Navy
ECU
Charlotte
FAU
USF
UAB
Tulane
North Texas
UTSA
I wonder how the AAC would react. Would Navy stay with the two Texas teams that are considered less prestigious? Invite Texas State? I wonder if there would be rumblings of a split and the Sun Belt east trying to form something with Temple, ECU, and Charlotte.
I also could be completely wrong and maybe SMU is the only defection to the M. West. and then Tech could take its place.

I've about decided that all this "conference reshuffling" really doesn't mount to a hill of beans for G5's anyway. No matter who you are, the TV money for G5 conferences is bad, the bowls all suck and your (or our) conference membership really doesn't matter. Even real football people don't know the difference between a CUSA that included ODU or Charlotte as members vs a new CUSA that includes Liberty and New Mexico St as members. 99 football fans out of 100 just don't know the difference, and don't care.
For the G5's, the whole conference thing is a facade. It's fake news. There's no big TV conference "payday" for the G5 schools the way there is for the P5 SEC schools, etc... So, none of this conference stuff really matters. The G5's are better off keeping the conference small (fewer mouths to feed), play the conference games for the competition and focus on better OOC scheduling for program and payday purposes. In 3 years, the football champion of the new CUSA will generate just as much respect as the the champions of the other G5 conferences.
