Are we going to re-construct the "lopsided" look of JAS where seats were removed? It looks really imbalanced right now, and IMO will detract from the sleek look of the new SEZ project. I thought the stadium seat removal was just a temporary measure that was due to be corrected when we finished construction on the SEZ.

Filling it up will help with the lopsided look. You'll have a great view from your new seats.;)

Don't let that one blip on the radar screen fool you -
They will come and they will BUY the tickets like no has before on our schedule - especially since they won the Bayou Classic to close out last year
This is a different breed of fan than the average SWAC or MEAC school
They have money and they DO travel

I hope I can get that game in Oregon. Wish I could be there in person.

I wonder if any Grambling fans will show up to cheer --or jeer-- their chief rival? It's got to be hard for die-hard Grambling fans to pass up this show only 3 miles away from home.

HD, Grambling is doing well to have 5K in Grambling for a home game. Remember they only sent over a few hundred when we beat the snot out the the best SWAC team ever in Ruston.

My sources say that no less than 50 SU affiliated RVs have already reserved parking spaces for this game.
They'll be camped out as far away as Memorial gym

We could turn the old Caruther/Neilson location into a RV village.

I am all for testing ways to get more tailgating closer to campus. This seems like it could be a good start.

I know that area will be green space, I think incorporating a parking lot for tailgating and RV would be great around there. The walk isn't bad to the stadium.
Our gameday tailgating footprint has been concentrated around the stadium. If our attendance grow, the tailgating footprint will need to expand to other area of campus. Memorial Gym, Neilson/Caruther Greenspace would be a good start.

I know this is crazy, but maybe we can generate more income by selling more parking passes for the parking lots that currently are home to a bunch of tents. Wouldn't it be awesome if our parking lot was for parking and tailgate area was for tailgating? I think so.

Those tailgate spots create much more income than the parking lot spots they offset.

You can still charge for tailgate spots, just put them in the green space.

If you move the tailgating out of the parking lot you might as well call it "Couch-gating". Because that is where everyone would tailgate.... at home!
I'd rather see MORE tents and shuttles for the parking.

That's what I thought, that would be a bad idea to move tailgating away from the stadium, much prefer to move parking and have a shuttle/walk.

I don't think anyone saying "moving tailgating away from the stadium", just stating that with growth of attendance, we need to look at expanding the tailgating footprint.
With the Miss State game, it went well. Tech fans tailgated around the stadium complex. Moo fans tailgated over by Memorial Gym/Hale Hall lot.
It's no different than what we experienced tailgating at A&M, LSU, etc.

I'm fine with additional tailgating in old Caruthers lot, for a fee for visiting fans or fans who aren't up to Trophy/Champion level yet, first come first serve.

I wish that they would use the whole parking area for tailgating, though, instead. It is more fun with both teams in the same spot and I don't think it has ever caused a problem at Tech. Use the other areas for parking.

Re: Someone Has Finally Listened - Southern Univeristy Coming to Ruston in 2015
Better idea would be to move the rugby field parking and make it first come/serve tailgating, move the first come/serve parking to Neilson/Caruthers.

Ugh, no thank you. I rather the dumbassary ULL fans not tailgate around the stadium.
Part of tailgating is having your car nearby. I doubt fans would want to drop their gear off and park elsewhere. It works at Ole Miss, but prob won't work here.
I like this set up from Southern Miss.

What about people who have cancelled LTAC donations or asked for refunds because they get to the stadium and see that the parking they have paid for is full and no other parking is open around the stadium because of tents. Not going to give names, but it has happened more than once or twice. How valuable are those LTAC giving, multiple season/sport ticket holding fans/ alum?
Not saying it is the end of the world, but it should be considered.

Maybe said people should get there more than 20 minutes before kick off, I've never seen LTAC parking filled at the +30min to kickoff mark... either way should be resolved somewhat since they've upped the level to get Champs to get C parking.

If LTAC lots are ever filled up, allow the LTAC overflow access to the Cash lots. Problem solved.

When our gate is more than 50,000 fans . . . . we can do a lot of space planning away from the Tech Drive/West Alabama intersection. Right now, Ruston High School is our best next door neighbor. Temple Baptist would be next.

Good point. Last year we saw what happens when the Ruston High parking is being used for things other than fan parking (Time out for Tech with all the future Bulldogs and Lady Techsters:o) It caused quite a cluster.

Down in the capitol city for the weekend for some family reunioning! Talked to several Jaguar faithful including one major contributor to SU! Man, they are looking forward to this game with high expectation. They love the fact the first game is within the state just 3-plus hours away. I was told to look for more than 70 charter buses being sponsored by Jag alumni associations across Louisiana and Texas to make the trek to Northern Louisiana. One old classmate said that he and his neighbor were renting a 15-passenger van to make the trip North, and they were going to deck out the van in Jaguar blue & gold. As I have posted previously, Ruston will experience an invasion of die-hard visitors unlike anything it has seen before.

Should be fun. Tech fans better buy their tickets as this will not be a usual crowd. How many fans do you think Southern will bring?

Based on SU numbers I personally have seen at Northwestern State (approx. 10,000), Jackson State (approx. 20,000), Alcorn State (approx. 10,000), Tulane (approx. 27,000) & ULL (approx. 16,000), I would estimate no fewer than 8,000 and no more than 13,000 SU fans on your campus for the September 5 gridiron clash. The actual number will most likely fall somewhee in the middlle of the two extremes. My estimates are more realistic than any posted so far. If you underestimate, as it appears you are, you will find yourselves turning away thousands at the gate, as ULL did in 2009 and as NSU did in the late '90s. They were ignorant of the fact, and simply did not prepare adequately. Not only were they not prepared to seat that many visitors, their concessions were grossly inadequate as well.

A sold out stadium is going to be incredible!
You have to wonder if it will happen more than this one time,
or if the Bulldogs are playing lights out, could it happen several times this year??

I hope you are right about the attendance and I hope that our administration was smart enough to plan for that. If we were able to add temporary seating and push well beyond the 30K ceiling that we have never met, I think it would be a huge WIN for us.

The Joe will be 28,019 at game time which means we would be 1,981 seats short of the 30k. Are you telling me we couldn't put 1,981 temporary seats in the North End zone??

I am just saying that from an optimist point of view, if Southern is as advertised we could break 30K with temporary seating.

If it was a normal year maybe - but with bringing the DAC on line, I really don't think it is feasible...
I would sell about 500 hillside seating GA passes for $15 each and be done with it

No - I know what it's like to move and entire operation into a brand new facility and get it up and running correctly by a hard dead line while still managing the day to day operations of the existing operations...
1) Concentrate on making the DAC opening the best it can be
2) Focus on having the game operations functioning and servicing to facilitate what will in all probability be a SRO crowd and the SECOND LARGEST crowd to ever attend a TECH sporting event on Tech Campus
3) Make sure the egress and access functions are adequate for handling the above referenced crowd
Those are the 3 things the admin should be focusing on - nothing else...
If they are success in those 3 things NO ONE will care if it was 28k and change or 30K and change that were there

Agreed. If SU travels as advertised, I fully expect T-Mac to announce a "temporary seating" plan any day now.

I would sell about 500 hillside seating GA passes for $15 each and be done with it
Small time thinking.

Re: Someone Has Finally Listened - Southern Univeristy Coming to Ruston in 2015
In 2009, Ull crammed 41, 357 into a 30,000 seat stadium without adding temporary bleachers. They sold seats on both hillsides and had peop[le seated in every aisle. The fire marshall finally stopped them from admitting any more, causing thousands to be turned away. More than 2000 were rejected, according to ULL estimates at that time. Northwestern State crammed 17,000 into a 15,700-seat stadium back in the late nineties. Many of their own walk-up fans, who were accustomed to showing up at the last minute, were turned away. NSU eventually moved that game to Shreveport.

Re: Someone Has Finally Listened - Southern Univeristy Coming to Ruston in 2015
Why bother with temporary bleachers when the 500 to 1,000 SRO customers can be handled with GA tickets?
Lots of costs/troubles associated with temporary seating when you are already wrangling a 900lb gorilla WITHOUT the dedication of the DAC

I second this. Even fooling with the the "smallish" bleachers for the main peach festival stage is an absolute nightmare.

I wouldn't call it a 900 lb gorilla. You're talking about adding 1K to 5K temporary seats, and you've had 9 months to do it. And you STILL have 6 weeks to do it. Not exactly a small time frame to work with. It can be done.

We have ice and bottled water to be concerned with.

Just make sure there is plenty of cold Pepsi! Everything else is mere details....

Re: Someone Has Finally Listened - Southern Univeristy Coming to Ruston in 2015
If nothing else, we will find out if the administration is ready for La Tech to be a BIG TIME program!
Let's get it right!
Turning away fan's is one thing, but not making sure the Fan's there
are taking care of, and have an incredible experience is something else!
A bad memory can linger for some time!

SU would never ask your band to sit on the ground if you were to visit our campus! We would inconvenience some of our fanbase before that happens!

Re: Someone Has Finally Listened - Southern Univeristy Coming to Ruston in 2015
Not meant to be derogatory. A sizeable temporary bleacher setup (as seen on PGA events) could be looked into. I mean, heck, bands in the superdome have been put in seats on the sideline before.
PS--I don't have my gameday degree, but I have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express.

Re: Someone Has Finally Listened - Southern Univeristy Coming to Ruston in 2015
In the 1980's Tech played at ULM and overflowed their small stadium. We stood in the endzone and had a great time! Bleachers are definitely NOT required to handle overflow demand. Plus the space bleachers consume may cause others to not be able to buy an SRO ticket; and Lord knows we need as many tickets sold and possible!

Re: Someone Has Finally Listened - Southern Univeristy Coming to Ruston in 2015
For the last few years, the IBowl allowed a vendor to offer some kind of "tailgate seating" in the endzone. They had chairs/table set up under a canopy and served appetizers and beverages for the price of a premium ticket.

Sitting on the grass in the North end might be fun, unless it rains. Pray for a beautiful day.
How many more days?

Re: Someone Has Finally Listened - Southern Univeristy Coming to Ruston in 2015
This game is an easy sell-out. Feedback I have received from Southern alum in my office and even Grambling alum is that Southern will easily provide 20k - even if some do not get into the game. When Southern plays Jackson St. in Jackson - its always a sell out. Southern alum tell me that whether they expect to win or lose for them its the event and when I told them the capacity they said tell Tech fans to buy tickets, IF NOT then expect a Southern home game.
This concerns me since Tech fans are notorious for last minute and walk up ticket sales. BUY TICKETS ASAP!!!!

Re: Someone Has Finally Listened - Southern Univeristy Coming to Ruston in 2015
I have herd that the student section usually packs the seats to capacity, if that's the case will they sell more tickets then there are numbered seats on the east side?
-
Re: Someone Has Finally Listened - Southern Univeristy Coming to Ruston in 2015
Grambling is playing @ California on Sept 5th, so expect quite a few of their fans to be at the game as well.

Re: Someone Has Finally Listened - Southern Univeristy Coming to Ruston in 2015
Dorms open on the 4th, the 7th is Labor Day, and Fall Quarter Registration is the 9th. Given that, what kind of student support should we expect?

I haven't had a good tailgate all summer so expect Blue to be there all day :D
If we try, the answer can be "everyone."

Our family just bumped up to 8 season tickets total. We can't wait!
-
Re: Someone Has Finally Listened - Southern Univeristy Coming to Ruston in 2015
I like the way you guys are thinking. I know SU alumni chapters from as far away as Chicago are buying tickets in blocks of 200-300. This is shaping up to be a football game with a side order of fun filled insanity.
-
Re: Someone Has Finally Listened - Southern Univeristy Coming to Ruston in 2015
you would have to think with Fall Registration not till after Labor Day that student participation will be limited a bit! Good news for the Jag... Fans!
Unless the Ruston community is in-gaged, the additional seating may not be required!
Still hoping for that over flow crowd for the game!

The east siders can pack 10,000 into space meant for 5,000.

This game had a decent crowd in 2004 on Labor Day weekend (Nevada sure didn't help provide anybody in attendance . . . . .)

That was, by far, the hottest game I have ever attended.
