Re: Comments That Don't Warrant A Thread
I should amend my earlier comments to say that there is at least one difference in Rio Bravo and El Dorado. If you replace James Caan with Ricky Nelson and Robert Mitchum with Dean Martin you do get to add a couple of songs to the mix. For whatever that is worth.

You're going to study hard on Greek all day right? Write some papers? Get a few hundred pages of Calvin or Barth's systematics read? Exegete some difficult passages in Leviticus or Daniel or something?
I guess we probably won't see you making many comments tomorrow.:icon_wink:

3 inches and counting...
No languages this semester (probably a mistake), so no translation tomorrow. But, I may get knee deep in a philosophy text-book. I'll see if I can peel myself away from that excitement to build a snow-person and post a thing or two.

The food was well priced and above average and the races were well done. There was enough time between each race to both try and understand the odds on each dog and talk to the female I was escorting.
Those dogs were incredible fast, but it seems to me that whichever dog wins the first turn is the most likely to win the race (there were some exceptions).
Also, before every race, there was a miniature parade of the dogs to the box. As the dogs were walking to the parade spot, every single one of them took a dump. Why don't they let the dogs do that before they parade them out in front of all of the spectators?
Never put money on a dog that doesn't void immediately prior to the race.

Wanted to countdown to a sport/game that we'd actually compete in and win. It's been this way for almost 2 months.

Yawn.
All I'm saying is that after years of everyone telling me that just one episode and I would be hooked for life, when I finally watched a couple I could take it or leave it. I don't think it is crap or anything, but I'd just as soon sit through any of the hospital shows, cop shows, lawyer shows, or whatever else. If it is on, I can be in the room (my wife has started watching it), but I'm not going to make any effort to not miss it.
And I knew I could set some folks off with that comment. :)

I passed a guy in Walmart wearing a Jim Everett jersey for the New Orleans Saints. What I found equally impressive was that this jersey was in really great condition, so much so that it really looked new. He was wearing the jersey about four times too big with baggy shorts and a sideways cap like he was "thugging." But hey, you can't go thugging with Jim Everett.

So, I've been dating this girl for a bit now and she came over straight from work to say hi before joining some group outing through her school to see the two shuttles that are up on the pad and learn about the stuff they do at Kennedy (she's a student at St. Pete College studying to be a science teacher). Unfortunately, she forgot her change of clothes from home and borrowed a shirt from me. While the shirt was massively too big, I made it a point to give her a Tech shirt.
So, the students were in a group as this guy comes up to give his talk, but the guy immediately notices the Louisiana Tech shirt, asked if she went there, and gave props to our school. For some reason, I think it's funny that a NASA guy told a bunch of St. Pete College students that Louisiana Tech is a good school.
Anyway, long story short, NASA recognizes our State-T.

Re: Comments That Don't Warrant A Thread
Until I was a jr. or sr. at Tech, Subway always cut the top of the bread in a little triangle. It worked great. All the meat and cheese and veggies went in evenly and you pretty much got the same bite all the way through the sandwich. Then, all of a sudden, they started cutting halfway in. They even bragged about the brand new great test-marketed features like this (I think they expanded the bread options about the same time). They were boasting that they had made their product worse!
This has always puzzled me. I can't fathom how someone could think the newer way of doing it is better than the older one in this case. I just can't see it. It's not even a preference thing like "you like mayo, I prefer mustard." It just seems so clearly worse.
For a while, you could still ask for the "old school" cut. But I doubt any one of the high school students at my local Subway is even aware that there ever was another way.
I just don't get it.
Maybe someone who has worked there can straighten me out.

I was actually having this same argument the other day with a co-worker. I say the old V cut is better because you don't have meat, sauce, etc. falling out of the sandwich while you eat. His response was that the new cut is better because it allows the "sandwich artist" to put more stuff on the sandwich. My solution for that was to cut a bigger V.
Then another co-worker came along and did not remember Subway ever using the V cut.

Re: Comments That Don't Warrant A Thread
A driver's license should be issued based on your ability to drive. THAT is the extent to which the DMV's power should extend. That's all that thing is for. It shouldn't take an act of congress to get a stupid license because the DMV is trying to do something it isn't designed for.
A Social Security number is for work purposes. It is not related to driving. I understand that they want to know who you are, but I think it is a little over the top. Why should I give them my SS #?
If we are headed towards a big brother real ID, then fine, make a real ID, but right now the driver's license should be driving related only.

Re: Comments That Don't Warrant A Thread
One of my shower curtains has a map of the world on it (if you are wondering why a clear plastic shower curtain from Wal-Mart isn't cutting it on its own, then you will learn when you marry). This map is in English. That is to say, it says Japan, France, Germany, and Turkey instead of Nippon, La République Française, Deutschland, and Türkiye.
But it lists a certain west African country as Côte d'Ivoire. This puzzles me.
Although I do see now that wikipedia says the government officially discourages the English usage. I wonder how they say the name of our country? Seems only fair that this should work both ways.
Would an Ivorian say, "La superficie des United States est de 9,4 millions de km², ce qui en fait le quatrième pays le plus vaste du monde derrière la Russie, le Canada et la Chine."
I bet not.

I bet not.
Sounds like you need a bathroom book.

That's what SI is for. The map is on the inside, so you only see it while in the shower. I'm trying to learn the 'stans.

Talking head terms that need to be changed...
"Mid Major" - Who are the Minor Majors? Sunbelt teams? Major Majors? BCS?
"He's a Division 1 prospect" - This one was wrong before they did away with 1A and 1AA, but please change it to "FBS prospect" or "other".

I don't know about the second one, but I believe the first one is a media euphemism for "bottom dweller," and refers to any school that is not in a B(c)$ AQ conference. Sort of like "working class" instead of "poor."

Which is why I hate the term so much. It hurts more to hear one of our own use it.

Maddawg,
I don't like it either (but, I have to admit that I have used it on occasion). What do you think is a suitable replacement? It would be nice to have a word that shows the arrogance of the BC$

Probably the most accurate term (unless you want to add the "football" specifier), but not much of a dig against the B(c)$'s arrogance. :icon_wink:

I'm often surprised at the variety of places I find references to G. K. Chesterton.

so strange to see an actual conversation on this thread i actually forgot which thread this was. then i saw this and thought it was the most out-of-left-field hijack i had ever seen. "what on earth does g.k. chesterton have to do with the bcs?" i asked myself.

Well, now that you mention it, his distributism is what some are hoping for in college athletics (though a form of wealth-redistribution a la Marx is what most are hoping for). :icon_wink:

i'm not hoping for any such thing. i only hope for an end to the monopolistic rules that college athletics are now governed by. just level the playing field for capitalistic competition. that's all i ask.
what we have now is more of a stalin-type animal farm socialism, where supposedly everyone is equal, while in reality the few elite are "more equal than others."

No, we have good old-fashioned American capitalism, where a few super-rich control the means of production and limit access to the market by eating up marketshare, and the rest of us hope to get a trickle-down effect that we can all benefit from. The rich get richer and the poor fight for the scraps.
The B(c)$ schools own the means of production and have dominant marketshare, so they are going to be on top anyway. They just added a layer of autocracy on it. :icon_wink:
