32 days ago I'm pretty sure everyone has moved on...doesn't mean we can't talk about the past and "what could have been's"...
I agree with Matey Matt...I think Head Coaching is about media relations, making the big decisions for the team, leading the recruiting efforts, raising money and having your hand on the whole program. I think your assistants are there for the X's and O's more than the HC. Skip obviously has had an inability to recruit. Was he the right coach at the right time for ECU...no question. Let's be honest, we don't have a plethora of Conference Championship trophies in the Murphy Center (he brought us 2 in 5 years). However alot of his success came with the recruits that John Thompson brought in...Skip brought in some talent, but when he left the cupboard was VERY bare...those were all his recruits. At USF he was not able to recruit either...He obviously had some other deficiencies as well and maybe did not assemble the best X's and O's staff there. I think he "can" coach...and unfortunately he hopped on the LT job immediately which could lead to his demise...maybe he needed a year off and then reassess the CFB landscape and find the best opty for him.

32 days ago Skip was a great salesman. He won us over, he made us think he wouldn't leave unless a super job came available. He left for a team that in all facets is a worse program than us. He said it was for family and I might believe him but the truth be told I think he left b/c he knew 2010 would be a really tough season losing so much depth. He left because he knew if he had a .500 season his chances of getting another job were slim to none. I will always be thankful to Skip for reviving Pirate football and one could argue he "saved" us from disaster. Our attendance doubled due to what he was able to accomplish here and while I will never forgive him for leaving us when he did, I do thank him for what he did. In hindsight he knows he should have never left ECU, especially now we will be in the conference he left for. But at the end of the day we got a guy who will never leave us and I truly believe that. Ruffin McNeil may not be the best coach in the country but as Th said, "There is no coach in the country who wanted this job more than" And so far he has done a pretty good job. Beating State and UNC in 4 years is pretty impressive, I think the move to the AAC will bring in better talent. I think he will build a program here much like Beamer did at Tech and he is learning on the job. 4 years in I can see a huge difference in him as far as making tough decisions. There has never been a more exciting time to be a Pirate and for that I say Thank you Skip best of luck on your future endeavors.

32 days agoeeecccuuu said...I have heard this alluded to before. What happened after he got there that made him regret the decision? Even more of a question for me is why didn't any of his assistances go with him to LaTech when some left the day/night left ECU to go with him to USF, but didn't go to La Tech when they didnt have jobs so did they have a falling apart with Skip at USF?

32 days ago via 247Sports Mobile As I recall, Skip threw the staff under the bus and used them as a bargaining chip to save his job. If that is the case, I would not follow him either.
I've wondered why he's working with an entirely new staff. Fire this clown. We will not regret it.
Not one thing I can think of to give me hope that Holtz is a better coach than anyone posting in this forum. I defended Holtz initially, but I honestly cant point to ANY decision or result that gives me the impression that he was nothing but fortunate at UConn and ECU.
Hey West...why don't you pull one of your vans and park it in front of Skippy's house? That might send a message to him
We had a series during the Kansas game that reminded me of last year. Never saw that pace or mix of plays again.
Scoring 3 offensive points against a transition team is absolutely unacceptable. There is NO EXCUSE for it PERIOD. I don't want to hear about lack of talent, experience, recruiting, Dykes, 32 seniors, none of it. This one is 100% on Holtz. You had a whole year to figure something out. You have 120 players on your team and you're telling me that we can't find 22 on ours that are better than theirs? No, I don't believe it, I WON'T believe it, and it's an embarrassment that this guy was hired to do a job, is BLANTANTLY this bad at his job, and yet is secure for another year because of what? Bad recruits? Idc who we recruited, UTSA was taking ANYBODY a year ago. The Pikes that feel froggy ab flag football during winter quarter could have suited up for those guys a year ago. And we lose to THEM after being a D-1 program for how many years now? Not good guys, not good at all.
Can we hire Warner to be the official Athletic Department Office Motivator?
