2016 Football Commitments

Of the 150 (137 actual), eliminate most of the 3 and 4 star. What's the number now? Much more realistic. The only recinding I recall over the years is when a guy won't commit and we have to move away from him to take someone else or from time to time a guy does not have his business in order.

Anybody know of a guy who we offered, he committed, and we recinded that offer at the last minute? Who?

Funny how you can make up words when a player does it like "decommit", but when LaTech supposedly does it it is called "recining".

We've certainly done it, especially at QB, when we have made it known we are only taking a certain number. Then there is incentive for one to be the first to commit...or commit before the spots are gone. With Belton and Abraham committed, I expect Wudtee no longer has a committable offer. Obviously we leave spots open to make room if a stud moves to us on signing day or something.

I know of none to have committed to us and we pull it at that point. That's not something Tech can afford to do. If we offer and that player commits, we take him.

This is my understanding too. The coaches have a plan going in: We need 4 OL, 2 QB, 3 LB, 2 DL, 3 DB, 3 WR, and 2 RB, for example. We will offer scholarships to a bunch of players and the first ones to accept get the scholarship. Once we reach our numbers, the offers are no longer available to the others we offered. We didn't rescind as much as they just chose not to accept the offer in time.

That's why "reservation" is probably a better term than "commitment." The player doesn't want to lose that spot. A bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush. If they happen to get a "better offer", they will cancel their reservation and we move to the next guy in line.

Yes, but some of them are as committed to us as we are to them. Woodtee never was.

I think you and I (and everyone really) just have a problem with the word "commitment." That's a strong word. But it doesn't mean he was committed to Tech and nothing could ever change his mind or sway him. He doesn't have any love or devotion for Tech. He admits he is only trying to do what's best for him. If those other schools would not have offered him, it would have appeared he was just as committed to Tech as any of our committments.

Maybe we should use that dating term... "X Recruit and Louisiana Tech are talking."

You keep saying this, I keep saying that some of the guys we get, like Kenneth Dixon, understand the definition of commitment.

Just like Alfred Beverly who ended up without the grades I believe (ULL has backed off now as well).

I think that is the difference between hard and soft commit. Hard commit in my estimation is someone who is actually committed in a way that is meaningful and in accordance with the actual definition of "commit." There is no question that KD was committed to Tech. The word "commit" should be dropped from the term "soft commit" because it ain't a commitment. "Soft commit" is such an oxymoron it's ridiculous. Find a new word...

What I've been saying since the invention of the word "decommit"

A "Commit" in this business should mean that a player isn't going to visit any other schools, and is ending the recruiting process. Anything short of that, isn't really a "commit". It's that simple.

...and most P5 schools can afford to tell a kid bye-bye if he visits other schools after a commitment. I've never understood why a kid would commit early when he knows he will get other offers. The only explanation is that they want the attention on social media. For schools like us, it doesn't help to get a Woodtee type commitment. Our coaches had to know we were not going to keep him.

We knew last year that we'd lose Turpin if one of the P5s came in. That was as much about him needing to get out of town as him wanting to go "big time".

Well, they commit early to reserve a spot. For example, if Wudtee doesn't commit to LA Tech early (to cite one typical scenario), we may get someone else to commit in his place and he rolls the dice that he will receive another offer.
