I am not sure whose birthday is today, but on this father’s day we will recognize an individual and his family that is tried and true Lincoln Parish, Ruston and Louisiana Tech.
Born at Lincoln General Hospital and raised on Neal Street, he attended Ruston Elementary School before graduating from Ruston High School and Louisiana Tech University. Even cheering his Bulldogs while in graduate school at LSU.
A quiet lady born in a house at the intersection of Alabama and Everett, his mother retired from Louisiana Tech after working many years in the Library. Helping raise her younger sisters, she was never able to graduate college. Her last name is shared with a creek running north from Ruston, Colvin Creek. She is a founding member of Emanuel Baptist Church. Before learning the Louisiana Tech fight song, the last Saturday of football season you could find him cheering “Go Navy, Beat Army”. His father served in the pacific campaign during War-War II.
His aunts graduated Louisiana Tech in the 1940’s, one having citizens of Ruston pay her tuition (one also graduated High School from Tech when it also housed a 1-12 grade school) throughout. Upon registering for class, Harry Howard always told her that her tuition had already been paid – see below for reason.
His grandfather served as police chief for Ruston during the depression when one of his jobs was to go the train station and say no jobs as trains continued north to El Dorado. Passing away of pneumonia, he left his wife with four young girls. Raising 4 young girls as a widowed mother was only possible due to the generosity of the people of Ruston. The City of Ruston paid her the postage saved to deliver the water bills throughout the city (on foot); she also did the sowing for the Ruston Police Department. She is an original member of Temple Baptist Church.
His great-grandfather is the founder and namesake of Ruston, Robert E. Russ. He is also a decedent of George Lomax, who was a state representative that introduced the legislation creating Louisiana Tech.
A great father who taught me much about life and respecting people, he is known around Haughton Baptist Church for his involvement with youth leading many camping and canoeing trips. Life lessons he taught me and many other contribute greatly to our success. Eccentric, he has had many hobbies but none more than canoeing and triathlons. His latest adventure is mud runs.
His other passion is Louisiana Tech. You will always find him staying for the alma mater and going out to the sounds of the Band of Pride Saturdays during the fall no matter the score or weather. A face for over 40 years in section OO of the Joe, you will seldom find him in Independence Stadium. However, you have seen him waving the Tech blanket at every bulldog and Lady Techsters basketball game. Tech could use many fans like him.
You know him as Russdawg, I know him also as father.

There are so many things about Louisiana Tech to be grateful for: in no particular order here's numbers 21 - 30:

- THE REGAL BLUES
- Hideaway Park

The supermarket price scanner made its debut in Troy, Ohio, as a 10-pack of Wrigley's Juicy Fruit chewing gum costing 67 cents and bearing a Uniform Product Code (UPC) was scanned by Marsh Supermarket cashier Sharon Buchanan for customer Clyde Dawson. (The barcoded package of gum, never chewed, is on display at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C.)
On this day in history, June 26:
It's now been 552 days since December 21, 2012, the date ancient Maya civilization believed that the end of the world would happen on December 21, 2012. There are now 552 days since this fabled cataclysmic event.
- President John F. Kennedy 26th June 1963, 'ICH BIN EIN BERLINER" speech: President John F. Kennedy expresses solidarity with democratic German citizens in a speech in front of the Berlin Wall that separated Berlin into west Berlin and East Berlin, he declared to the crowd, “Ich bin ein Berliner” or “I am also a citizen of Berlin.” Oddly enough, NO ONE has ever said with pride "Ich bin ein Sunbelcher."
- Elvis Presley June 26, 1977: - Elvis Presley sings in Indianapolis, the last performance of his career
- Germany & Poland on June 26, 1934 sign a non-aggression treaty (Poland soon learned how American Indians felt after their treaties with us). Wonder if ULM's defense has signed a non-aggression pact? Sure looks like it sometimes.)
Glad you found us. We've been changing addresses a lot lately.:icon_wink:
This thread is a lot like "having a beer with your buddies." We live far enough apart we can't do that literally, but it's a good place to hang out and enjoy camaraderie with fellow Tech fans. We love our university and the bonds that unite us a much deeper than just athletics. It brings us together and keeps us pumped up with our Bulldog bretheren. Sisteren are welcomed too. Since you're now a Techster fan you are welcomed to visit here often and have a metaphorical beer with us.:) And to you in honor of today's historical note above, “Ich bin ein Lady Vol fan.” I'm beginning Pat Summitt's book SUM IT UP. I've skimmed a few pages and it looks awesome.
This thread is like a Super Wal-Mart. Do everything at one place. You could stay on the football thread and get information or a laugh without going to another forum. This is a thread where you can ask other posters in certain areas where to go and eat, where to shop, where to take your kids in that area, etc. And, you can talk about whatever is on your mind. Are you having problems with something and don't know how to fix it??? Maybe someone on here can help. This is a FUN, INFORMATIONAL thread.
However, a jerk, unprofessional Moderator keeps moving this thread around to different forums!
Some folks masterbate and will soon go blind!
Do you realize that if you click on the settings (user CP) option at the top right of your screen, it will show all of the unread threads in which you've posted? There's no need to go searching through different sub-forums for a specific thread when you can access all of your subscribed threads with one click.
Ich bin ein Berliner
I am a jelly donut.
That's what I thought he said, too, but evidently the speechwriter did some research with the German grammar and somehow this was actually correct. Something about where the person was from. It was complicated. I'm no German expert (eine grosse bier bitte and that may not be correct matching the two adjectives with the noun so genrally I said zwei grosse bier so I got one of the two adjectives right).
Thank you Russdawg, though I still feel a bit like an interloper (or brother-in-law) because of those shared experiences and the obviously strong (read: tolerant :icon_wink: ) relationships y'all have established over the years.
Speaking of in-laws, it's my time of year again to go offline and trespass into the familial wilderness of Pennsyltucky. If you don't hear from me for two weeks, it only means I haven't found a small burg public library to duck into while making a voluntary, sanity-preserving run to the grocery store.
It's not that bad, really. I should get a lot of writing done (on an intentionally un-wired laptop) and eat my weight in cheesesteaks and scrapple.
If you're not familiar with scrapple, understand that the name is descriptively accurate but has nothing to do with apples. Think: what would you do with all the anatomical stuff you wouldn't put into sausage? The regional population divide is between RAPA and Habbersett brands. Thin sliced and crispy fried, I'm a RAPA man myself! Okay--that's got me ready to pack now. :) God bless the LaTech family! (...and go get 'em Tyler!)
I grew up eating scrapple. Mmmmm. I would butter some toast, fry up the scapple nice and crisp, and have me a nice scrapple butter sandwich.
Nice work, DJ and Houston. While it was reported in the New York Times a few years after the speech that JFK actually said "I am a jelly donut" in German, the Times was WRONG (imagine that!!) and JFK was right. http://www.snopes.com/language/misxlate/berliner.asp
Yes, as the article says, the use of "ein" is preferred by one who was not from Berlin. I knew it was something like that. Now if he said "Ich ben ein Frankfurter" would he be a hot dog? Now Wiener is not so obvious, but that is the adjective for a person or thing from Wien or Vienna. So when you're eating Vienna Sausages from a can you're really eating Weiners, although the I believe I read that the original "Frankfurter" guy did move to Vienna so a hot dog may be a Wiener or Frank(furter). So much for my little German. I was only there for about eighteen months forty years ago.
Contrary to JFK, in what WAS INDEED apparently a gaffe, the first president George Bush unknowingly gave a British version of "the bird" in Australia, in 1992 to a group of farmers in Canberra, who were protesting about U.S. farm subsidies, and instead gave the reverse peace sign: palms in, knuckles outward, an insulting V sign known as the two finger salute.
It does mean the same thing as the bird. I believe it goes back to the Battle of Agincourt in France during the reign of Henry V. Follow me if you will on this: the "reverse peace sign" is actually what an archer does to pull the string back on his bow. The English archers with Henry V were credited with turning the tide in favor of the English against the French forces. The "reverse peace sign" was the English way of taunting the French whenever they met in battle after Agincourt. It took the current meaning during the 700 years that have followed that battle.
So maybe when Dawg fans wished "peace, brother," to Benson ...

That is hilarious!

Ms. Terri asked her Sunday School class to draw pictures of their favorite Bible stories.
She was puzzled by Kyle's picture, which showed four people on an airplane,
So she asked him which story it was meant to represent.
"The Flight to Egypt ," was his reply.
Pointing at each figure, Ms. Terri said,
"That must be Mary, Joseph, and Baby Jesus.
But who's the fourth person?"
"Oh, that's Pontius - the pilot!"

Well, at least I can now post on this thread. For a while I was blocked from this thread when it first moved to this location. I was not blocked from posting on other threads.
So...who wants to talk about football. After all, this thread SHOULD BE in the Blond Bomber forum. I think we are going to have a damn good team this year. Ok Russ, you went to the first game in JAS when we beat East Carolina. I assume you went to the last game in the old Memorial Stadium. Who did we play? Probably Northeast. The last game I went to there was Lamar when Phil Roberston had his best game and it was a breakout game for Ken Liberto, but don't know if it was the last game.
We're an anarcho-syndicous commune. We take it in turns to act as a sort of an officer for the week, but all the decisions of the officer must be ratified at a biweekly meeting by a simple majority in the case of purely internal affairs, but by a 2/3rds majority in the case of...
Y'all sure are throwin' around some big ole words.
