Better off for what?
Because I can say that some of the changes were good. Having a specific blue and red to use (Except lady techsters) is a good thing. A standard State-T logo is also good. Some ideas have been awful, but other things have improved.

I can agree that having a set list of colors was okay. I’m talking about the name thing mostly. We don’t need anything else beside the state T and Louisiana Tech. I still have a ton of apparel that just has the state T on it and everyone always comments, “did you graduate from Louisiana Tech or just a fan?” No confusion.

Have to ask... Where are you wearing the state-T logos when asked if you are an alum or fan?
If you're talking about a 50-100 mile radius of Ruston, of course people will know the logo. A lot of people in the Dallas area don't know what the state-T represents. Many assume it's another LSU logo. Admittedly, I can NOT figure out how they make the connection other than they see the state; therefore, it must be LSU. I can honestly say if we were in a P5 conference or men's basketball was consistently in the Sweet-16 round of March Madness the state-T would be just fine because of all the visibility it would have in the sports media. Someone posted earlier that we are trying to grow enrollment. That requires drawing in students from outside a 100-mile radius of Ruston. If the LA T ECH helps kids associate the university with the little sports media coverage we get then that is what's needed.
I saw a lady in the grocery store the other day with UMHB on her shirt and cap. In the parking lot I saw a car a big UMHB sticker on the rear window. I have no idea what the heck that refers to. Haven't taken - and will not take - the time to google it. Only reason it stood out is because someone reacted to my Frisco Bowl shirt by saying they had a neice attending ULM. So I saw the U and M and thought of NLULM.
-
Re: We got El A Tech'd again.
I live in Houston and I have gotten many comments on just the State T. Several years ago a couple of guys asked what was Louisiana Tech's mascot although there was a small one on the back of my cap. But they did recognize the plaint State T logo. More recently an older hispanic man recognized the State T logo. I was pleased since he was a rodeo cowboy of the old school and in the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame. He has grand daughters at Nebraska and I believe Okla State.
-
Re: We got El A Tech'd again.
People in San Antonio definitely know that the state T IS TECH. Most comments are that they want to pattern their sports after TECH's success. Some just come right out and say that Dixon was a beast!

Almost everywhere I go actually. Disney World, Gulf Shores, Nashville, Utah, Colorado, and Hawaii to name a few. I don’t know if some of the people lived close to Ruston and were traveling like me.

Re: We got El A Tech'd again.
People can know what the logo is outside of the immediate area. They can be on vacation or have moved from the area, or just br a big college sports person. But just because one or two do, doesnt mean everyone does. When someone recognizes it, that would not be someone who the logo with the name is making it easier for. Its better for people who are seeing it for the first time.

I suppose everybody knows how to spell teck, but La can be confused for Lah. We don't need to encourage the h being inserted right?
The branding our brilliant AD at the time chose was LaTech - pronounced "LahTeck". Just say that...lahtech.com.
We DID NOT brand ElAyeTech.com

HD, the bowling coach actually said to search for "El A Tech bowling" on YouTube because he live streams our matches on there. There's no such thing as LATech.com, but that's beside the point.
The point is Tech wants people to say "Lah" Tech while styling our name LA Tech and LATech, which of course is resulting in more and more people pronouncing it "El A" Tech just how it looks instead of "Lah" Tech. Tech does not want it pronounced "El A" Tech; yet Tech isn't doing anything to try to fix this problem they created.

The lack of a unified branding vision is one of the most frustrating things about Tech. It might seem irrelevant to some of you, but as long as we continue to do this, we are obviously still acting in a "small school" mentality. No better than the NWSt, UL-Ms of the world.

Maybe most of them don't make stupid branding mistakes, or they fix them when they do?
Have you ever said Cal Berkeley to someone who went to school there? Yikes! It's either Cal or UC Berkeley. Never Cal Berkeley.
Then there's the fight over the real Carolina.
Ever said Central Florida? If you have, I bet it was the last. It's UCF and only UCF.
Why does nobody ever say Louisiana State for LSU? Because they've successfully branded themselves.
I could go on and on. Every university, business, etc. works on crafting their brand. I challenge anyone to find a single "big school" who doesn't have a branding guide.

SC, being one of the original 13, started what is Univ. of SCarolina in 1801 as "South Carolina College."
U of Southern Californial was founded in 1880.
The sticky part is SCS did not become USC until 1906.
That's where the name rights fight stands.
PS-An interesting sidenote of the SCalifornia name. From wiki:
a. ^ The alternate name "Southern Cal" frequently appears in sports-related news articles. USC discourages use of "Southern Cal" out of concern the name might suggest a foundational association to the University of California, Berkeley (commonly known as "Cal" in the athletics context), even though the two institutions have no affiliation other than their Pac-12 membership. For several years, USC's media guides contained the following request: "Note to the media: In editorial references to athletic teams of the University of Southern California, the following are preferred: USC, Southern California, So. California, Troy and Trojans for men's or women's teams, and Women of Troy for women's teams. PLEASE do not use Southern Cal (it's like calling San Francisco 'Frisco' or North Carolina 'North Car.'). The use of 'Southern Cal' on licensed apparel and merchandise is limited in scope and necessary to protect federal trademark rights."[195]

It actually went the other way. But it was about one partiular logo style I believe. Still, it's an SEC team and an NCAA powerhouse in court over what seems a minor branding issue.

Son, I've forgotten more college football than you've ever watched. If you think South Carolina was widely known as "USC" back in the 60's, 70's, 80's & 90's, then you don't know anything about college football (which is no surprise, really.;) ) The push by the university to be called "USC" happened shortly after South Carolina joined the SEC back in 1991, and --as multiple courts have now ruled-- is as clear infringement on the University of Southern California's logo and trademark(s).

I've heard Cal Berkley a lot. Matter of fact that's usually how i refer to them. I've never heard it corrected but I don't find myself in California very often.
I've also said Central Florida plenty of times and never been corrected either. I doubt the national champs are that concerned with it.
I also hear people say Louisiana State and I've said it myself. Again never heard a peep about it and I went to LSU and have worked with tons of LSU grads.
Having a branding guide is not what I am talking about. Every school big and small should have a branding guide. Having a preferred name is fine. The reaction when someone deviates from that branding guide or preferred name is what I am referring to. That is where the small schools and big schools differ. In that regard we are small time just like ULL.

So we should have a brand guide but not follow it?

Probably because there are several overlapping problems:
1. We chose poorly on how we chose to refresh our brand. Wussed out on Dawgs, "fixed" a perfect logo.
2. Due to these choices, we didn't think through how the brand would be interpreted. That's why people now say Ell Aye.
3. We don't enforce any of the above.

It is now down to 55% to 45%.
In the meantime is it Southern Alabama or South Alabama?
Louisiana, UL, ULL or Southwestern Louisiana at Lafayette?
I am glad I graduated from Tech! Everyone knows our name. Calling us El A Tech indicates a poorly educated person. IMHO

Calling us El A Tech does not indicate a poorly educated person. El A Tech is the direct result of Tech’s idiotic branding of LA Tech and LATech. El A Tech is essentially what Tech is asking people to say by styling it like that.

It all comes down to how people pronounce the abbreviation.

Actually it was not his lame LahTech insistence. It has been our PR and Marketing people who refused to use all caps (LATECH) or LaTech. Instead they have INSISTED on using LATech in almost everything.

Nah, the LAH chicken came before this rotten egg (chronologically AND causally). Crappy marketing begets crappy marketing.
