as long as there is true capitalism, there is room for innovative newcomers to compete. the problem is the illegal cartel that the bcs conferences have set up. i know it would still be a huge uphill battle for an institution like Tech to climb its way to the "top level," but at least it would then be possible in theory.

Why do callers to radio talk shows call in and say, "Hey, Joe Blow, how do you think ElEssEwe looked last night? I'll hang up and listen."
For the life of me I'll never understand why a phone-call-driven show would continue to center around the host/hostess and their thoughts. Are the callers nervous. Are they clueless. Do they have no opinion how ElEssEwe looked last night? Or does the radio host/hostess make callers feel uneasy that they might get shot out of the water if they make the wrong comment?
I'll go ahead and post this and read . . . .

Parents are camped out 45 minutes before their students are dismissed . . . after mine. And I have to get out of my car and walk up there and grab him . . . or wait for who knows how long.

Hey, maddawg. We need to see about getting your eLiTe thing turned into a t-shirt.
I envision a black or charcoal gray t-shirt with a state-T on the front, and the word eLiTe (with the blue and red letters like you have) below it.

i'd buy one. maybe "ouisiana" and "ech" written vertically below the l and t?

Re: Comments That Don't Warrant A Thread
Florida voted 62% to add an amendment to the state constitution to ban gay marriage. President Elect Obama won the state with 51% of the vote. This means that at least 20% of PE Obama's supporters voted against gay marriage. For some reason, I find this very interesting. I've said on here previously that I hypothesis this means people either voted against Senator McCain rather than for PE Obama or that PE Obama got votes for his skin color. That's the background. I was discussing this with a friend of mine, who is a huge Obama supporter, and she claims the reason this occurred is because the wording on the ballot was confusing. So, obviously my immediate response was, "so, you mean, Obama supporters don't educate themselves on the issues their voting on?"
And then, I got to see a girl get pissed off.

you are assuming that everyone who voted in the presidential election also voted on the ballot initiative (or whatever they call it). could be that obama voters really didn't care that much one way or the other on that. could be they just voted for president and left. could be they just voted a straight ticket and didn't bother with the ballot initiatives.
or it could be that you are right and obama voters, in general, voted based on skin color and hype and didn't really know anything about the issues. i'm just playing devil's advocate.

The "uneducated BHO" supporters are given cheat sheets. Those are printed up by churches for the most part. Churches opposed the amendment being discussed.

Re: Comments That Don't Warrant A Thread
A few comments on dogs:
1. We need a new word for small dogs. If you aren't big enough to live outdoors, then you shouldn't really be a "dog." Maybe "doglet." If that sounds dismissive, it's probably because it is meant to be. If you want a hamster - just buy a stupid hamster, at least they aren't yippy.
2. If you own a dog, and that dog lives outside (where it should), I don't mind the occasional bark. If a dog sees a cat go by, or a squirrel or just needs a quick bark I can live with that - even at night or early in the morning. But if your dog barks steadily from 3:00 am for an hour - you and your dog need a good strong kick in the ribs. Actually, you might need two kicks (still just one for the dog).
3. As you might have gathered from the last comment, we live in a pretty dog-filled neighborhood. Almost every house on our block and behind us has a dog. Mostly I don't mind this. It is probably great for security purposes. But there is a little grass alley between my block and the back of the houses behind us. And some genius likes to walk his dog up that alley early in the morning. I guess he hasn't noticed that when he does this EVERY SINGLE YARD HE PASSES has a dog in it that starts barking at his dog and setting off all the other dogs in the other yards. Would it kill that dude to walk on the street instead of the alley? I appreciate that his dog is doing his business in the alley and not my front yard, but I'd trade the quiet for a little mess near the curb once in a while. In his defense it has been a while since he has done this that I have noticed. Maybe someone already gave him this message or he figured it out on his own.

Technically BHO opposes gay marriage, also. So voting for BHO and against gay marriage are not necessarily contradictory. Furthermore, I know gay people who are in favor of gay marriage who vote Republican because they are business owners and feel that their business interests are better represented by Republicans. It's not really possible to vote entirely consistently with one's beliefs.

Don't know if you are meaning to imply that only pro-Obama churches had cheat sheets, but I remember years ago getting conservative cheat sheets at church.

I wonder if anyone has ever been caught in that big Price is Right wheel and sustained serious injury.
I was off work yesterday for Veterans Day and watched the show. It seems like they always have someone who loses his/her balance when spinning the wheel and stumbles forward or backward. For years, I have been waiting for someone to get dragged under that wheel.

Funny thing that you guys mention "Price Is Right". I'm currently in California on a work trip. Took several personal days to see a few TV tapings in Los Angeles. One of those tapings was for Price Is Right. I showed up at CBS at 5:40am and got a front row seat to the action. No, my name wasn't called, but it was a blast just to be there and see all the background stuff.
The taping I attended is tentatively scheduled to air on 2/16/09.

James Brown
John Lennon

Congratulations, you're the winner. My wife and I really enjoy the SingStar games on Playstation 2. It is kind of like a karaoke game (similar to Guitar Hero or Rock Band, but just with vocals). The games have about 30 songs each and you can get 80s, 90s, Pop, Rock, etc.
So I just bought her the "Legends" edition. And while Biz Markie is probably much closer to my talent level and range than Marvin Gaye or Whitney Houston, I'm questioning his status as a "legend." There are a couple of other non-legends on there, but most of them had more than one "hit" with a novelty song.

We haven't tried yet (well, not on the game) because we are both kind of sick with sore throats and the thought of trying to sing isn't too appealing right now. But it will be interesting to see how hard it is to be off-key in all the right places to match him.

I forgot about that song. I especially enjoyed the mama jokes at the beginning. My son loves to try to make up mama jokes so any time I can come backat him with some fresh ammo it's good. I think my best one to date is "ya mama's so fat she walked to the bus stop and 5 people got on".

ESPN scoring updates are horrible! I was at the deer camp with no phone or internet service. They did have DirectTV, but I didn't want to pay $23 for the last quarter of action. I kept clicking back and forth between ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPNnews. It was almost 6:45 when I was finally able to catch the score. ESPN obviously thinks that Ivy League games are highly favored over WAC, CUSA, and MAC scores.

espn 360 quit on me when we were down by 3 in the 4th quarter and had them at 3rd and 9. i frantically had to try to get it working again and while i was waiting for it to load, i just caught a glimpse of the espn bottom line on the game i had on the tv and it showed us up by 4. that helped my blood pressure while i finished loading it. it was kinda like gnc in flashchat.

Re: Comments That Don't Warrant A Thread
I bought a car recently. The deal I struck with the general manager included a Louisiana Tech license plate. I had a figure in mind and the dealership eventually lowered the price several times to finally meet my figure. Each offer included the extra cost to the dealer of a Louisiana Tech plate.
The next day, with my check in hand, the business manager wanted extra money for the Louisiana Tech license plate. The papers he wanted me to sign did not include the stipulation of a dealer bought Louisiana Tech plate. I picked up my check, stood up, and told him that no TECH plate would be a deal breaker. He quickly said he would pay for the TECH license plate and put it in writing.
I think the finance manager was an lsu fan and he did not want to buy a TECH license plate. He was quick to realize he would lose the deal if he pushed me even a little. He was right about that. I was adamant about getting a TECH plate.

Re: Comments That Don't Warrant A Thread
You mean they got through with the first hour IBowl selection bashing???? Brando was PO'd. Heard him talk about it twice on Sirius in the AM then driving around this afternoon on 97.7. I read the ESPN columnist's take on the pairing this morning and, lo and behold, Nick turns around and reads it this afternoon.
I stopped listening for the day. I may join Lightning and take a holiday from the board and local radio.
There was a press conference last night they could pull sound bites off of from both coaches. Something fresh. Something to help inform the potential fan base about the two teams and GIVE THEM A REASON to go see Tech and NIU.
Let's have some game buildup and quit the knockdown.
And, of course, all this is IMHO.

Re: Comments That Don't Warrant A Thread
When referring to a game, the correct term is "lose," not "loose."
loose
adjective, loos⋅er, loos⋅est, adverb, verb loosed, loos⋅ing.
–adjective
1.free or released from fastening or attachment: a loose end.
2.free from anything that binds or restrains; unfettered: loose cats prowling around in alleyways at night.
lose
–verb (used with object)
1.to come to be without (something in one's possession or care), through accident, theft, etc., so that there is little or no prospect of recovery: I'm sure I've merely misplaced my hat, not lost it.
2.to fail inadvertently to retain (something) in such a way that it cannot be immediately recovered: I just lost a dime under this sofa.
3.to suffer the deprivation of: to lose one's job; to lose one's life.

The poster known as Spinoza from the Pawlitics thread is apparently from northern Illinois. He has previously mentioned that he likes a restaurant in Morris which is less than 60 miles from DeKalb - the home of the NIU Huskies. I wonder if he is aware of the Independence Bowl matchup and if he might want to make the trip to meet some of his BB&B "friends". Maybe one of you TECH fans who frequently post on the Pawlitics board should invite him.

Decent so far, but I will say it isn't something you want to begin reading while fighting off a cold.
I felt like I caught the flu from reading that one.

I edited this post to correct the spelling, but it makes me wonder what idiot decided that "transferred" needed an extra "r."
I guess it was the same moron who formalized the spelling of llama.
Why, oh why, is our language so stupid?

Was the BHO thing yesterday a historical moment or an historical moment? I've seen and heard both. Grammar police?
Found it! an goes before words beginning with a vowel ( I knew that one), but also before words beginning with a silent h. Since the h in historical is NOT silent, those who have been using an historical moment are dumb arses.
The above post is written mostly to aggrevate Inudesu.

that's tough. I thought it was just a moment of history.

According to this site, I guess the key is how you pronounce "historical." I think it should be an historical but I could see where someone who regularly drops their h's would say it the other way (British accent?).

Worked.
I'll return the favor by directing you to this thread, which features one of your favorite people performing his job at the usual level of competency.

Actually, the rule applies to the word that a or an modifies and not really the word that's directly behind it. In other words, historical is an adjective just like a or an and both, historical and a/an, modify moment. Since moment begins with a consonant sound, the correct choice would be a since, as you've pointed out, words with a silent h or vowel sound are modified by an.

While we're on the topic of our silly language, would you mind doing a little subject-verb agreement fix on your signature quote? It's been driving me crazy.

I didn't even really read it. Apparently, the site I copied and pasted from didn't proofread it either. Done.

is that really how the rule works? i thought the a/an difference was more of a pronunciation thing. you need an "n" before a vowel sound so that the sentence flows correctly when read out loud.
for example, "a beautiful evening" wouldn't sound right if it were "an beautiful evening,"
or, "an awful time." would be hard to say as "a awful time."

I thought it was phonetically, as well.

It wouldn't be the only thing in the English language that didn't sound right yet still followed a specific rule.

Actually, you two have gotten me to doubting my own knowledge now especially since it's been quite a few Stolis, message board posting grammar and shift work grammar since I've done anything close to pay attention to the English language, so I'm tempted to go in the attic and dig up my old grammar books to double check even though I'm very certain of this. If it was just maddawg, I'd chalk it up to redneck ignorance, but two intellectual stalwarts like yourselves, I don't know.

Better yet. We can wait for Aubrey to get back from his hitchhiking trip to the inauguration and get his expert input. Or, you can just diagram the sentence and see what you determine.

I'm not saying you're wrong. I just thought that's how it was. I just think of some examples like "an colorful alligator" which doesn't sound right, but maybe that's just because I always followed an incorrect rule?
Methinks we might be putting too much effort into it when we start digging for books in an dark attic.
