It most certainly was an option considering that pretty much everything standing had been destroyed. I don’t see why Tech couldn’t have built almost anywhere... whatever limitations were self imposed. Being that we’re talking about the decision makers at Tech it was inevitable that their visions were smaller scale than what could’ve been. That’s just historically who they are and what they do. Its almost guaranteed that we’ll be regretting certain things in the years to come and then they’ll be trying to figure out what to do to make it what it should’ve been to begin with.

What are the ramifications of having a stadium that doesn't meet NCAA specifications? We can't hold regionals? Legitimate question.
I don't think it was shortsighted at all to rebuild the stadium there or build the apartments up to it. I think it makes out baseball one of a kind and beautiful. I've made this comment before but Wrigley and Fenway aren't considered staple baseball parks in the nation because of their MLB consistent specifications and functionality. The ambience of the neighborhood around it, the ambience of them inside, the peculiarities of their designs, and their histories all add up together to make them special. No one continues to rave about new stadiums built in a sea of parking lots in the middle of no where. People always talk about Wrigley and Fenway. Our stadium isn't on the same level as Wrigley and Fenway obviously, but keeping our stadium where it is allows it to retain its charm like they have.
We have a one-of-a-kind stadium setting, with students hanging out on balconies behind the outfield and people sitting next to railroad tracks behind right field. Who else has something like that? Now we have what appears to tailgate spots down first base line adding something more special. I think these are original ideas that are what we need to create a special atmosphere. We have history in that spot to keep traditions going and adding more. Fans and students are in minutes (or less) walking distance from the stadium and having it next to a busy intersection can draw the attention of casual fans. These all add something special to our stadium experience.
Conversely we could build the stadium in a new setting. Maybe it could have been built where the softball and soccer facilities are now or where the intramural fields are going now. It could then be another modern looking baseball stadiums with nothing special setting it apart in a generic athletics zone. Sure we could add a right field berm, but that's nothing special. A railroad track is. Students on balconies behind the outfield is. Housing in minutes walk from the stadium is. Building a new stadium in a new location removes all that makes our baseball stadium one-of-a-kind like Wrigley and Fenway. I don't think keeping Love Field there and the apartments there was short-sighted. I think they were original ideas and help create a special atmosphere at our baseball park.

No, we can hold a regional. Could have in the old stadium. Of course we have to go through the bidding process which is something we failed to even attempt with our last bunch in charge. Also, it helps to be a perennial contender like others in our state.

What was shortsighted was the manner in which the apartments were designed and built back in 2003. The last thing certain administrators on campus cared about during that project was the baseball program.
It all starts there.

I thought FEMA required us to rebuild in the same location? But softball and soccer moved, so they may not be accurate unless FEMA money only went to baseball & tennis, while state money or insurance (?) went to Softball & Soccer.

I'll worry about hosting a regional when we MAKE more than one regional every 30 years or so...
It's a mute point - outside of the blue seats I'm very pleased with the new stadium - location, size, look, etal...

When looking for this in the archives, I noticed that construction officially started 3/1/2020. The completion inside of 12 months is an amazing feat by all involved.

Or building at the same location for SB and Soccer wasn't viable site due to flooding? I know the soccer field gets a lot of water. Looking at the new parking lot, there drains that runs across the former soccer site.

The old stadium probably topped out about 6 on a 0-10 scale. Tech had a chance to get a 9.5+ long-term, but settled for something more like 8 to 8.5 that will be costly to get to a 9+. Obvious improvement, but short of what it could have eventually been.
Does it meet Tech's needs in 2021? A definite yes, but that isn't the right question to ask. That is the biggest problem I have always had with the decision-makers at Tech. Too focused on now and the near future, and not focused enough on the medium-range and long-range future.

I totally agree! Today is really nice but soon everyone else will be building new or refurbishing old park/stadiums and we will be average sooner than we would like!

I really hope that the powers that be also put some effort in the aesthetics outside of the field. Like hiding as much as possible the views of the apartments behind left/center, the RR tacks etc. The facility looks great but don't stop there. This could be a show piece for a little while until other schools catch up. Let's not finish at 90%!
