Usually refrain from "unnamed sources" but I was just told Mike White has spurned Tennessee and will remain at Louisiana Tech.

Haha. VN thinks Roy Lang is a Tech beat writer.
Re: Parrish: UT focusing on Mike White for HC vacancy
Still their lead candidate. Mentioned details of his Tech contract and the buy out, but noting more.

Southern Miss loses 4 of top 5 scorers next season so Donnie Tyndall should be the one seeking a new position this year. I wouldn't be surprised that he ends up at Tennessee. The Vols will get a good coach with a proven track record and for probably less money than they are offering Mike White. It could be a good deal for Tyndall and for the Vols.
Excellent point. Tyndall has to rebuild either way, so he might as well take the money at the bigger school.

Are we sure about that? (Hiring from within.) That's what we did with Jerry Lloyd, and that didn't work out so well. Lloyd won 20 games in each of his first 3 years, and then things went downhill FAST!

The flip side is we hire someone with coaching experience and we still aren't sure. Never know until ya know.
Hopefully we won't have to worry about that for at least one more year..
Re: Parrish: UT focusing on Mike White for HC vacancy
I just hope they announce something official today - preferably that White TURNED DOWN the job at Tennessee. Would love to see that headline!

Realistically, are any of our assistants ready to be a HC? Brown and May both look to have similar resumes which look good. Anybody have any idea if they are HC material right now?
At least this situation should be resolved today. I cannot see this dragging on past 4:00 this afternoon, whichever way it goes.

I don't know Brown as well so I can't comment on him. But, I could see Dusty in a HC role. Mike's been a great role model and one advantage of running an athletic department on a shoestring is that EVERYBODY gets some experience doing some of the ancillary work. Dusty's mature and has a temperament similar to Mike's. He also has great relationships with the current players. Of course, all of these things probably can be said of Brown as well. For all these reasons, though, Mike might want to take them with him (assuming he leaves, but PRAYING he does not!).
I wondered about naming one of these guys as an interim coach and doing the old "national search" next season, as this may not be the best time to hire. Advantage: we'd get a season-long job interview. Disadvantage: they might see it as a lack of confidence and look to leave anyway.
Re: Parrish: UT focusing on Mike White for HC vacancy
No way you go a full year with interim
Re: Parrish: UT focusing on Mike White for HC vacancy
Hope it does not come to that...we need offer him a million with a million buyout if you want him to be like smart and stay in non bcs league
Re: Parrish: UT focusing on Mike White for HC vacancy
When it comes to coaching changes, seems like everybody has an "inside" source.
Re: Parrish: UT focusing on Mike White for HC vacancy
I'm thinking Dooley may be helping us here. UT has lost a ton of money buying out football coaches recently.
