Out of curiosity I checked some coaches’ records (past and present) and found some quite interesting results. I specifically looked at their first year on the job as a new head coach and/or subsequent new coaching hire of another program to see what their records were and most on this list had less than stellar inaugural years at the new job and some were repeat offenders…in other words it took them additional years before they were able to have a winning season.
An example is Frank Beamer at VA Tech who took 2-years to get his first winning season but his over all record for the first 6-years is a dismal 24-40-2. Now lets talk about Skip’s dad Lou! At William & Mary his first 3-years he’s 13-20. He also had losing seasons his introductory years at Minnesota, Notre Dame, and South Carolina respectively. Mack Brown’s initial years at Tulane and North Carolina were nothing to write home about. Nor was Art Briles’, Bill Snyder’s, et al. How bout Brady Hoke who had four bad seasons at Ball State and one at San Diego State and is now 26–12 at Michigan. I’m sure that everyone of you here wouldn’t turn any of them down to be TECH’s head coach!
Where am I going with all of this or what am I trying to illustrate here? I’m sure most of you are educated enough to figure it out. Like the majority of you on here I was not a fan of SH’s hire, but as bad as last season was…I’m going to give the man the benefit of the doubt and his due. Hopefully, he will turn it around in short order and if he does (and that’s a big IF) you all know that it won’t be long before he moves on to a higher profile program as some of those that have preceded him. Unfortunately in this case of a coaching hire, there are no mulligans in the near term so we are just going to have to play with what was given TECH and hope that the ship gets righted then all of us can move forward and find something else to bitch about.
Moreover, some of the vitriol and negative comments on the open forum really should be relegated to the “The Hall of Fame BoaRD”. If you don’t think that recruits and parents/relatives of those recruits come onto this board, you are living in a vacuum because they most certainly do. And that includes current players as well. I personally feel that a lot of the bitching here in the open forum is doing nothing but becoming a detriment and impairment to the overall recruiting process! Remember what your parents told you and some of you have probably said to your kids…”If you don’t have anything nice to say, then keep it to yourself and don’t say it at all!”
Feliz Navidad y Feliz Año Nuevo TECH Nation from the Heart of Texas!
