When that happens, I expect some reshuffling to happen.
The Big 12 will possibly take a member from the Mountain West (probably CSU) leaving them at 11. I'd expect them to call up Rice, SMU, Tulsa and Wichita State. That would get the MTN West to 14 members in Olympic sports and football as Hawaii and Wichita State would complement each other.
The AAC would be devastated as they probably also lost a team or two to the BIG 12 as well, most likely Memphis After defections, the league could probably look like:
Temple
Navy
ECU
Charlotte
FAU
USF
UAB
Tulane
North Texas
UTSA
I wonder how the AAC would react. Would Navy stay with the two Texas teams that are considered less prestigious? Invite Texas State? I wonder if there would be rumblings of a split and the Sun Belt east trying to form something with Temple, ECU, and Charlotte.
I also could be completely wrong and maybe SMU is the only defection to the M. West. and then Tech could take its place.

I've about decided that all this "conference reshuffling" really doesn't mount to a hill of beans for G5's anyway. No matter who you are, the TV money for G5 conferences is bad, the bowls all suck and your (or our) conference membership really doesn't matter. Even real football people don't know the difference between a CUSA that included ODU or Charlotte as members vs a new CUSA that includes Liberty and New Mexico St as members. 99 football fans out of 100 just don't know the difference, and don't care.
For the G5's, the whole conference thing is a facade. It's fake news. There's no big TV conference "payday" for the G5 schools the way there is for the P5 SEC schools, etc... So, none of this conference stuff really matters. The G5's are better off keeping the conference small (fewer mouths to feed), play the conference games for the competition and focus on better OOC scheduling for program and payday purposes. In 3 years, the football champion of the new CUSA will generate just as much respect as the the champions of the other G5 conferences.

I asked Sun Belt commissioner Keith Gill about the potential of Marshall, Southern Miss and ODU joining for fall 2022.
He said nothing’s changed, fall 2023 at the latest.

To be honest, I wish we could all just move on. Sometimes, if the roommates want to move out of the house, it's best for everybody if they just get on to it.
I will say, if they stay until next year, I will remove myself from the CSNbbs CUSA board. I used to enjoy keeping up with goings on amongst our conference mates, but since October, snarky, nasty comments have replaced decent conference discussion. I won't participate in that.

Message boards aside, what's the downside for to them staying? It's all upside. The internet stuff is annoying, but it's just that. Doesn't outweigh what's best for Tech in the real world.

Agreed. From our perspective, there's almost no upside in us being petty and causing problems for the three but there's also no upside in letting them leave and causing scheduling problems for us.

The question is simply whether it's better for Tech if they stay or if they go.
I can't think of a single reason (other than the aforementioned message board bickering) for us to not root for them to have to spend another year in CUSA. I'm still open to hearing one. Maybe they don't wear the CUSA patch on their uniforms?

If they want to host championship events, they can stay in CUSA. Simple as.

I don't think you ever got an answer to this. Apparently it doesn't matter whether it's better for Tech. They GONE.
As far as "message board bickering" -- I have learned to not discount the "message boards" too much. A LOT of those folks (and folks here too) are pretty well connected to their respective universities' athletic departments. They're hearing stuff, and they're (many times) parroting what they've heard from reliable sources without revealing them.

Yeah I always kind of thought they'd leave early.
I never expected my preferences to be a factor here. But that's all any of this was.
My issue is with all the "I just want it over with" comments (especially UTEP fans for some reason). There is no reason to want something to happen that is a worse outcome just because it might make message board chatter snippier than usual.

Let's not if you are going to list both universities and states.
And you could stop after Colorado State and Air Force. No team in the SBC would ever be considered for Big 12.

If Tulane shows an ounce of commitment to their athletic department, they will be included for sure.
Historically, that has been a big if.

Didn't the SWC reach out to them in the past after they left the SEC? Obviously they weren't up to snuff. They spiraled downward ever since they left the SEC and demolished Tulane Stadium. They easily could have invested more and been the GT of the Big12. They seem to be showing more initiative now.

Pete Thamel
@PeteThamel
Sources: The three Conference USA schools departing to the Sun Belt – Marshall, ODU and Southern Miss – have finalized a separation agreement from Conference USA. The terms of the separation have been agreed upon but are not expected to be made public.
Conference USA will play with 11 members in 2022 and is expected to release a new schedule soon. The league has petitioned the NCAA to play a pair of Week 0 league games for health and safety reasons.
The Week 0 games help alleviate teams playing games too many consecutive games, which is inherent in the awkwardness of an 11-team league.

Not disclosed. But it should have been in the $2 million range each to make up for lost NCAA conference distributions for them not being in the conference next year. Any less than that would be just plain incompetence from Judy and the other C-USA higher-ups. Unfortunately, Incompetence is Judy's middle name.

That we will not know until some enterprising reporter files a FOIA Request. That reporter will probably not be from a North Louisiana news organization.

What north Louisiana news organization? The Times and News Star are not based in north Louisiana. No local TV or radio station that airs in in north Louisiana has any incentive to actually practice traditional journalism on any topic that benefits Louisiana Tech.

The radio guys have been quietly asking the question, but they don't dare ask our AD. They'll end up asking LB about it, but he is just a peon in this cluster.

It does not need to be a reporter. Anyone can file a FOIA request in Louisiana.
"Anyone can request public records and a purpose does not need to be stated. There are no restrictions on what can be done with the public documents once a records requester has them in hand. The custodian of the records must respond to requests within three days."
https://www.nfoic.org/louisiana-foia-laws/
There is one caveat, though. The state may try to charge you for the time spent looking for the info if you are not a member of the member of the media (unless you clearly state it is not for commercial purposes.)

I’d also ask if he supports the baseball tourney being held at a school that’ll leave the conference within 2 months after the tournament. I’m sure you’ll get a political answer but maybe you’ll pick up on something subtle.

Wood doesn't have an answer for that. Nobody does. A couple of weeks ago at a one-on-one lunch I asked Wood point blank, "why hasn't Judy MacLeod been fired"?? He said he doesn't know, that that's up to the President. My response was, "ya know, if I was in your shoes, I'd be asking for it. Otherwise, we can all keep being nice about things like this until Tech ends up in the Southland Conference or something. If there was ever a school that needs PROACTIVE change, it's LA Tech."

Has anyone thought about the possibility of luring Texas State and/ or Arkansas State from the Belt? Surely this has occurred to someone in the league office? With the heavy eastern lean of the new SBC these schools have to understand they have a better long term fit in CUSA, right? I know it's not likely at all, but to me this is a better option than either SFA or Tarleton and really effectively bridges the gap between our western and eastern schools, especially ASU with whom we have a long history.

The DBU add means someone within the league is being proactive in this area. And I don't think it's Judy or anyone in the league office. It's likely certain presidents and ADs.
So it would surprise me if they're not at least talking to Texas State and Arkansas State.
The TV deal that will be announced a year from now and the push by the eastern Belt schools to mold the league in their footprint will likely drive the decision.
