LB is NOT a good HC. I think he got lucky with Ostrander's recruits and now that pipeline is dry. I am not sure any of us can name ONE decent starting pitcher that LB has recruited. Just 1.
Here’s a summary of what I heard.
Burroughs began the show complaining about Tech’s conference realignment relevant to the locations of our opponents, scheduling road trips without the money for charter flights, tough travel circumstances regarding the bad hours and all while the players have to go to classes and practices. If I’m not mistaken it’s Burroughs who schedules out of conference opponents so if you screw that up by the days you play and then have to travel, then yes it’s going to be tougher. He talked about the player's injuries and everyone being exhausted. He said we have to play our same players all the time. I wonder why? The answer to that is that our collective coaching staff don’t develop backup players, but they do recycle the same guys who haven’t really contributed in years now (Drost and Safford. Berch doesn’t even get on the field anymore). Burroughs said the Arizona park size was a reason Tech didn’t do better. That they knew how to hit and defend in their park and we didn’t. In regard to the Saturday big lead to loss game he essentially said the team played their hearts out and that sometimes things simply go horribly wrong. He didn’t fault anyone, not that he should have or as head coach ever would publicly, but he also didn’t take any of the blame that I think he owns. Burroughs often mismanages his pitchers and in the biggest moments he’s always at his worst. He also added something about that if you can’t pull for this team you should find another team to pull for.
This is the other odd thing about Burroughs. He hardly ever shoulders the responsibility himself.Quote:

It is never LB's fault. Never his assistant coaches fault. It is always someone else's fault.
Another team to pull for? Is LB signaling he knows this season is shot and is, in his way, warning fans away. News flash LB! it's already too late as the team is stuck in a funk... well, that's not fair. The reality is this team is exactly what it appears to be: very mediocre with some huge holes in the lineup and especially on the pitching staff that won't/can't be filled this year. The results are, and will be, a very accurate measure of the quality of this team. Maybe they can recite Teddy Allen's mantra: this is a hard game.Quote:

And those things you listed are still the coaches fault. At least to a great degree. Fans will come and be more positive if you put out a successful product. He arranged the schedule, our conference is what it is and you can’t complain, just have to win. Teach guys to hit it where they ain’t so the ballpark doesn’t matter. Conditioning. Recruiting. Developing. Rehabbing. All those things are on the coach and the staff around him. That’s what they are paid to figure out is how to navigate all those issues.Quote:

Dawgs win 6-2, scoring 2 in the 8th to secure things. Burroughs could’ve taken the ULM night off based on his 3rd base coaching. Well I guess he really did since at no time in the entire game did he call for someone to steal a base or bunt a runner forward even when there were of course some opportunities. That’s Burroughs though. He’s a baseball whatever happens, happens kind of guy. I wonder if he knows a coach can do such things anytime once the game starts and not just when being behind after the 7th inning? On another subject it’s appearing more and more that Broderson and Bates are showing serious signs of faltering as Tech’s automatic setup and closer guys. Burroughs like he normally does is going to thoroughly exhaust these two guys for tournament time and there probably won’t be anyone else developed with a mindset to close out a game.

By not getting a night off for Broderson and Bates all Burroughs did was solidify their declining performances. I think we all know that once a trend gets started you have to do something different to break it. Putting B&B back on the mound in the very next game they were available to pitch after their meltdown game is not doing anything different. Subsequently they both continued to have some difficulties getting through things without some threatening tension.
Like the last outing with ulm, this game was obviously a bull pen for both teams. What we saw last night was our best pitching relief. It will be ugly in Dallas this weekend.
IMO, Bates needed some work not rest. Broderson is another subject. LB threw him to the wolves when he put him back out there after having done his job on Saturday. Not sure he gained confidence last night.
We left B8th. Listened to TA call the 9th on the way home. SMH every time I hear him call a game. ulm way out shines Tech in radio PxP in every sport. ulm also out shines Tech with their PA and game production.
Anybody hear why we no longer take the field in home games (like we did for 100 years) for the National Anthem? A Judy thing or an LB thing?
The B&Bs (Broderson and Bates) are showing definite signs of decline. Hopefully, I must emphasize the "hopeful" part because my mind thinks something else, it's just a mid-season slump, and they'll find their groove again. But, the MO under LB has always been pitchers either used up (too many innings pitched) or the opposition has studied them, have their pitching tendencies/patterns figured out and LB and his vaunted pitching coach don't know it, or if they do know, they are clueless how to fix it. A few days ago I called attention to Bates' recent struggles and was told I should stick to WBB. Now, I see others are posting the same concerns. More WBB experts, I guess :rolleyes:
On a positive note, it is great to have Davis' bat back in the lineup. Yeah, I know...here comes another "stick to WBB" rebuke...but I would like to see Davis hitting behind some guys who can get on base with some regularity. Last night he had a double and a triple and no RBIs from either because there was no one on base. Maybe Furr will find his bat/eye and start getting on base hitting from the 9-hole, setting up Davis to drive him in. For a guy who can't (which I was told a month ago) Corona sure hits a lot of fly balls...He is a terrific defensive catcher and will be missed next year.
The reality is this, Tech is very mediocre overall, as a team. We have some good players, but not enough to overcome the mediocrity of the rest of the guys/coaches. This is a senior-laden team, we should be better. Oh well, maybe they will surprise us, and themselves, and win the series this weekend in Dallas. A 2 to 1 series win would be HUGE!
