I agree and believe the reason for their selection of recipients was due to your above points. Selection by race for most all things is racist by definition no matter what “social justice” term/verbiage is used. My reason for posting their logic and ideology was for that reason and theirs is wrong.

From day one, I thought Pfizer vaccines were bound, generally, to hospital folks.

Moderna vaccines, now approved, for long term care folks. Simple logistics.

Speaking of, nice to hear General Perna personally shoulder the blame today with respect to bad info given to states about vaccine quantity.

True statements. The extreme vulnerable populations of the nursing home bound and special needs children and adults was in that early group as well I believe.

Seems to me, given the controls possible, there was never a reason those in nursing homes should have been at high risk. You can control access, control who is allowed in, and control the required PPEs to be worn at all times. Of course the staff has to be closely monitored, but that can be done. And as for visitors, family, again measures can easily be in place to assure, as much as it is possible, that no one was bringing the virus in. YES! some nursing homes did a great job of it, using common sense measures, getting even better as more was learned about the China virus. There are two such facilities in Natchitoches, with a total 196 residents who had ONE incident of a resident getting the virus, and that early on, like in April, but who survived...ZERO deaths. And there was one facility that was negligent and had 14 cases, out of 78 residents, 4 deaths. That one facility gave a black eye to the industry as a whole, even though the others had a remarkable track record. There are two "assisted care" facilities here that also did very well protecting residents.

Some folks, family members, pitched a fit about the controlled access, and it was those complaints that made the news and stirred up issues. It was not the facilities themselves who introduced measures designed to protect the elderly residents. Point is, I don't see why such residents need to be near the top of the vaccine priority list. Oh, unless you think it is more important to relax their protective measures and have an "open door" policy whereby visitors can come and go as they please.

It was workers that brought it into these facilities and hundreds of facilities in Louisiana had outbreaks. As did every other state. Workers don’t stay at the facilities, so every shift presents a new opportunity to bring COVID into the facility.

Many of whom didn’t want to miss a paycheck...especially early on when many thought this was “just the flu”.

If they come to work with fever they should be fired. No responsible health care worker would ever dream of doing that.

I agree, but a lot of folks were in a position to choose between being responsible and getting paid...and more than a few administrators didn’t help themselves out by having lax policies or enforcement measures.

Examples of those not getting paid for not going to work sick? Not sure about bad administration other than in some of the blue states. That was not nursing home admin, it was government admin..

We are back to the original point of the discussion. The workers are coming to work sick. Some may have known they were sick. Some knew for sure they were sick. Blaming that on the nursing home administration is the usual blanket problem solver for those who have never been involved in running an actual business. The administrators I know locally have done all they can do.

The point is - long term care facilities aren’t really protectable if you have community spread. The narrative that “if you have unhealthy you should just isolate yourself” doesn’t work. Unhealthy people cannot be fully isolated. The more the disease is in the public the more likely it is to impact vulnerable populations.

You can spread COVID without a fever, you know.

You are telling me stuff I already know. I don't need to be convinced.

Flu was used as an example above. People with the flu do run fever. I was responding to that.

The two of us had this discussion regarding the nursing home issue months ago. For the most part we agreed that with rapid testing the sick could be prevented from coming in contact with the residents. Obviously they are not being tested daily, but I don't blame the administrations for that. Lack of personal responsibility among the workers is to blame.

My daughter's place of employment, and she's in the medical field seeing patients daily, depends heavily on self-reporting by the staff. They do random testing of the staff, and that has returned well over 90% negative results. But, as for "contact tracing" that is left to self-reporting. My daughter tells me some of the staff has been more diligent than others in requesting testing "just in case." Most of these staffers, like the CNAs, make less than $10/hour and cannot afford to be sent home for week+ without pay.

The implication is that these workers either have no sick days or are out of sick days. I doubt any employer will dare dock an employee's pay for having China virus symptoms. Now if you have an employee who has taken off a number of times for China virus symptoms, it's time for a long talk with that employee.
