Ask for documentation of this rule. If they are using LOCAL rules, then they should have something written on it. If there is no LOCAL rule and they're going by the Dixie baseball rules, then there is not a "slide" rule. The rule is actually that the runner must "avoid contact". Ask for clarification IN WRITING. Bring Rule 7.08 (m) with you. It says that you may slide OR avoid contact with the fielder.

There is. It's called obstruction. Unfortunantly, for it to be called, there has to be contact. If the catcher is in the act of fielding the ball, then there is no call. If it's still on the way, then the runner is safe.
Rule 7.06

Some people think baseball is boring. Some people like soccer. Go figure.

I'm sure it was put iin place in the name of safety, but if they really wanted to be safe, they'd move the mound back and get rid of the hot bats.
When you add this "madatory slide" rule to the "runner can't jump over the fielder" rule, to the "train wreck" rule, to the "out of the baseline rule," you get some very funny and inconsistent interpretations by Dixie umpires.

Thanks for pointing this out.
The umpires call it a "judgement call". I guess they do this based on the last part of the rule, but that appears to be talking about where the other runners should advance to and not the play at home.

Never heard of leftover fried okra. How did you manage that?
