Yes, many of us have been asking for years "Is there nothing more?" We know Skippy has under-achieved with his string of 8 or 9 win seasons, and while the 6 straight bowl wins are nice* in today's CFB reality making and winning a minor bowl game while "good" is nothing great. Then came a "break through" of sorts for Skippy, finally a 10-win season. Again, many of us said then that was good but needed to be a stepping stone to the next level, which includes: regular season wins vs. P5s, a CUSA championship, and a Top 25 ranking. I, for one, gave Skippy a pass for last year. But, placed emphasis on this year. He said this was his most talented team ever at Tech. HIS WORDS! Well, here we sit at 2-5 and it's looking really, really bad.
*the reason some of us (not all of us) place value on the bowl run is because Tech had been so bowl-poor for so long. It helped to correct some of the disses we got...the 9-2 team/8-3 team of 1997 and 1999, and of course the mess of 2012. Plus some other years we were bowl eligible and got passed over.
Holtz is a doltz (made that term up). Clearly he is incapable of anything more than being mediocre. Time for some new blood, something fresh and exciting.
We finished 10-3 by beating teams which ended up with losing season records. The only team we beat (other than maybe Grambling as I didn't check them) was Southern Miss who finished 7-6. While the beating of Miami was a good thing, it definitely shouldn't be held up as how strong our them was. After the loss Miami had a record of 6-7 (also having lost to FIU). We lost to every team who ended the season with a winning record (except SM) with four of our wins coming against two 1-11 teams and two 3-9 teams. However this year we can't even beat them.Quote:

As for J'Mar, Holtz, for whatever reason, coddled Rock Star to the point that it ruined the 10-3 season due to his inability to stay away from extracirricular activities (an ongoing issue with Holtz teams in general), and in the long term, it left the program without a legitimate option at quarterback (2020 and 2021.)
For the record, I was ready for Holtz to move on after the 2016 season when he blew the chance to win a conference championship (mainly due to his inability to keep people eligilbe (AGAIN) and conservative coaching style.)
You must think that places like USC, TCU, Georgia Sothern and LSU are complete idiots for removing successful head coaches ... head coaches, who had more equity (wins and championships) built up than Holtz. And you must think they are silly because they strive from championships instead of being like Tech -- content with "competing" and being among the 70 percent of teams that make bowl games.
You can look down your nose at those of us who wanted Holtz gone before now, but the stone cold fact is: Here we are in the middle of the worst football season in two decades, an extremely fractured fanbase, a bleak conference future, etc.
And after this season, we will not even be able to beat out chest about seven straight bowl games.
Fire Holtz! Fire Guice!
1. Holtz has never won a big game he wasn’t favored to win.
2. Holtz has never won a conference championship in 8 years!
3. Holtz has never developed a QB except for the Rockstar.
4. Holtz runs a vanilla offense and refuses to change it.
5. Holtz is a micro manager who wants to call all the plays himself. He won’t let his coaches coach.
6. Holtz’s assistants have been up and down. He tends to hire friends who need a job. Sometimes that’s good, sometimes it’s really bad.
7. Holtz’s own press conferences have been something of a mess this year. He often talks about mistakes he made. This is not a new HC, but someone who has been a HC for 18 years!
8. Holtz struggles to understand the game at times. UTEP was a perfect example of a team nowhere near ready to play.
Number 7 tells the whole story. He has yet to learn from any mistakes. The other side of that is that we obviously haven’t learned either.
I’d say number 3 is a serious stretch. J’Mar was mostly an underachiever and lazy. That’s not exactly development but it is par for the course and about right of what to expect from Holtz. He’s proving himself a loser more and more.
IMO I think what was wrong with J'Mar was a combination of what you mention above and #5. It seemed to me from somewhat afar I admit, that every time Tim or anyone tried to say anything to J'Mar Skippy would materialize out of thin air. He should have let one of the best players in Tech history and one of the best QB's in college history coach that kid, but he didn't.Quote:

He's always had issues with QB development and special teams. Though I've defended him, I've always wished he'd let his OC's call the plays. You're on the right side of history now, so all is forgiven :laugh:. There's no scenario that could possibly play out (other than us going back down to FCS) where keeping Holtz makes sense. He's damaged goods, and he has alienated a large group of the fanbase by his conservative play and boneheaded indecision. We simply can not afford to keep him around any longer, but that doesn't mean we wont.Quote:
