Good thing nobody is saying that anybody can't vote (except felons). All you have to do is get an ID, get registered and vote.

Ok, I will put you (and your cohort) down as a “yes” for mandatory background checks with photo IDs for all gun purchases to make sure the person that is buying is eligible to purchase.

Now ask yourself, do you think the guns that are causing the murder rate to soar are being bought by folks that are going to follow that law? Why are most of these gun crimes being done by blacks in black neighborhoods, most in areas where you can't carry a firearm legally? Doing a background check will keep convicted felons from purchasing a firearm legally, but that's not how they are getting them anyway, is it?

I haven't seen any stats, but I wouldn't be surprised if blacks suffer a disproportionate number of gun deaths. And, the vast majority of those are black on black killings. Goosey will probably provide some numbers. So, it may be that the LACK of gun laws is a form of systemic racism, and specifically, blacks possessing guns. No Republican-backed policy, like background checks, will solve the black gun deaths issue. It's much more likely that such background checks will spare white lives, as most whites killed by guns is the result of some crazy-azz dude shooting up a school or killing his own family. It's kind of like the whole crack vs. powder cocaine argument.

Nope! the only way (and even this is a pipe dream) to keep blacks from dying in gun violence is to keep guns out of the hands of blacks. And, since the vast majority of those guns were not acquired through some legal, background-checked means, this means the police (OMG!!!) will have to do unannounced vehicle and house inspections and seize all guns found (from blacks). Anything less is just allowing gun violence to continue, black on black, and that is systemic racism.

Getting back on topic...somewhat.

I attended a workshop yesterday on new real estate laws, etc... and included was a presentation on Louisiana's brand new government-handout program of giving checks to landlords, who suffered financial loss due to the China virus, and to tenants who are waaaaaaaaay behind in rent payments and now are facing eviction if they don't get caught up. One of the key components of this program is....[drum roll]....proper ID! Absolute PROOF that 1) you are who you say you are, 2) that you were(are) in a legal, active lease agreement, and 3) had financial hardship and are indeed in arrears. When asked what kind of ID is acceptable, the very liberal, state government rep, said, any kind of government-issued ID, for one. So, (and I expected he would do this) this very conservative (Trumpster!) real estate broker began mockingly questioning how the average, "poor person" could be expected to have proper ID. I knew he was playing her (it was a woman) to make a point. She never caught on, and dug in deeper almost fussing back at him about how EASY it is to obtain acceptable ID and finished with, "well, I'll say this, no proper ID, no check!"

During the coffee break I nudged him and laughed. He knew I knew he was just messing with that goofy government rep.

BTW...it is estimated that 8 million people will soon face foreclosure on their houses, now that the ban on kicking deadbeats out of their houses is about to be lifted. One real estate broker/investor has set up a separate operation in his office designed to go after these REOs about to hit the market. "Will be buying houses pennies on the dollar and getting filthy rich!" he boasted.

Another 6 million people are facing evictions from their rent houses or apartments. Although it will be in the best interest of landlords to try to mitigate those cases, recoup as much back rental payment as possible and avoid evictions when possible. These new state programs, as just referenced, are designed to help with all of that.

Bang! Hate to keep the thread hijacked, but Guisslapp brought it up to make a feeble point about voter ID.

It is blacks who are the victims of this gun crime. And in typical fashion dawg80 is absolutely correct about the enforcement...it would have to be a stop and frisk policy, which I am certain that Guisslapp feels is racist. But can it be racist when it is actually saving innocent black lives?
