BleedTechBlue: Et tu, Brute?
I am sorely disappointed in BleedTechBlue's reporting of this situation. Full of vitriol and misinformation. If I had an account with them, I'd be canceling it. Glad I never ponied up to begin with, if this is the kind of reporting I could expect.
-
Re: BleedTechBlue: Et tu, Brute?
I don't have one either but from what I am seeing on Twitter I have to agree with you. Very one sided.
-
Re: BleedTechBlue: Et tu, Brute?
What I see on Twitter makes me happy I never paid- I would have cancelled!

Terrible reporting BtB. If you have any respect for your University, then quit making us look bad.

Yep... I'm a bit disappointed.

Re: BleedTechBlue: Et tu, Brute?
BTB is bush league. Always wanting money to get the "inside" info.

What I REALLY don't like is that some of the articles stating that we "declined" the I-Bowl cite BTB as their source.

Had a subscription and cancelled it after a few months. Poor quality for a pay site.

So just so we are straight, you are saying that we did not make a last ditch attempt to play ULM once the other doors closed? You are saying that BVDV lied about that to the AP reporter.

I am saying Tech did turn down the Independence Bowl down when he says they did not. They made a last ditch effort but it was after turning it down twice.

Re: BleedTechBlue: Et tu, Brute?
I believe JFord on this. My father in law spoke with several high ranking people at LA Tech that go to Temple Baptist Church today. All of them said that we were not going to bowl game before the NIU info came out and threw Bruce under the bus for his decision. They would not say much else about what his decision was but layed the blame on Bruce and his decision.
-
Re: BleedTechBlue: Et tu, Brute?
Why all the hate? He reports the facts he has.
-
Re: BleedTechBlue: Et tu, Brute?
Ford (BTB) isn't the only one stating these facts.

So, media guy, did you bother to ask why the I-bowl just HAD to have an early decision instead of waiting until Sunday afternoon, LIKE EVERY OTHER BOWL IN THE FREAKING COUNTRY?

I wonder if "EVERY OTHER BOWL IN THE FREAKING COUNTRY" invited a team several times with no response.
How many times does a guy have to ask a girl out before he moves on?

Indy Bowl wanted a response so they could go to their plan B to make sure they got a quality game so they could move on making their arrangements. Indy Bowl called Bruce, he said hang on, they said let us know by this time, he didn't call back in time...so they moved on.
I believe that's all Ford is saying.

Yes, what is the significance of church attendance in this discussion? Are you saying that a Baptist Church controls Louisiana Tech athletics? Are those the guys who don't have sex standing up because they fear some church member (voyeur who peeks in neighbors' windows) would accuse them of dancing? That is a truly weird post!

Re: BleedTechBlue: Et tu, Brute?
Guys. I sat right here in my living room and laid this exact scenario out to my wife about how we had a decent chance of staying home this year if NIU won their game. If I could see it as a possibility surely BVDV could too. My question is didn't BVDV have some idea about the snakes on the I-Bowl committee? Saying no to them was the kiss of death. No way to come back later! There will come a year when we are 6-6 or 7-5 and look to them for a bid and it will never come. We've burned that bridge.

EXACTLY!! A bowl game against UC-Santa Cruz 'Fighting Banana Slugs' is still a bowl game.

Re: BleedTechBlue: Et tu, Brute?
While I'm extremely disappointed that we're not going to a bowl game, I couldn't give two twits about the IBowl. This isnt' the first time the IBowl has turned it's back on Tech. They are NOT our friend. I couldn't care less if Tech ever set foot in that stadium again...ever again.

I have a problem with the following statement that you tweeted: "LATech's AD was caught in a lie by the AP..." Do you have 1st-hand sources to verify this charge? Or are you just repeating rumors and taking sides based upon your gut feeling?

He said they didn't to the AP and I was told by numerous that Tech did indeed turn down the Independence Bowl. Whether Tech wants to say it wasn't an "official" invite or not it still turned them down. The Independence Bowl told Tech they wanted them in the bowl and Tech did not respond in the time frame the bowl requested.

Exactly, he's calling Bruce a liar and making the IBowls case for them. Not to mention getting played like a fiddle. Really, really unprofessional.

Why was the time frame necessary? Perhaps they were pissed we didn't want them? Its gotta hurt being the fat chick bowl for years, having little ole Tech tell you to wait was the last straw and they did something about it.
-
Re: BleedTechBlue: Et tu, Brute?
We don't need you JFord. You and I exchanged words at the Auburn game awhile back when you questioned our administration. And I called you a fat a$$ on the air.

There is a distinction there. I am going to let this stuff settle for a few days because it's pretty clear that everyone is rightfully pissed. Hopefully people will come to their senses after the initial sting wears off.

This doesn't add up to "LATech's AD was caught in a lie by the AP." Here's an excerpt from the AP report:
La Tech athletic director Bruce Van De Velde told The Associated Press that Independence Bowl organizers offered a spot in their game on Saturday afternoon, but the Bulldogs had other possible options still available to them. Van De Velde said he asked the Independence Bowl for more time to make a decision, but was told by game organizers that they couldn't wait.
"Nobody turned a bowl bid down," he said. "We asked for more time to vet two other opportunities that we had that we felt good about."
What is factually inaccurate here?
-
Re: BleedTechBlue: Et tu, Brute?
After looking at it more objectively, Tech has invested heavily in Shreveport. The Independence Bowl got Ohio, who they would have had tonight or yesterday. Tech asked for the committee to give them more time and even withstanding the investments made in the Shreveport community they did not wait. As a result Tech is on the outside looking in and the local bowl was not there for Tech. I made a mistake. Please accept my apologies Tech nation.

This doesn't quite do it. You are suger-coating the fact that you called BVDV a liar when in fact you had no 1st-hand evidence to make such a charge. Now that Tim Fletcher (a real journalist) is actually getting the story from the source (I-Bowl committee members and Louisiana Tech administrators), your false reporting is coming to light.
This situation highlights why IT guys shouldn't pretend to be sports journalists on the weekends.

It seems that so many outlets rely on second hand and unreliable information for news sources rather than getting off their a$$ and getting the facts.
And for you Ford, just because somebody tweeteed it does not make it fact, They used to tar and feather people who spread untruths and journalist were fired for not getting it right, although I really hesitate to put many of the people reporting these days in the journalist category.
Everyone is in such a hurry to "report" that they do not bother to get the facts right and they quite often let their opinion get interjected into what is supposed to be news and not an editorial.

Absolutely. Look, everyone is hurt from what happened on Sunday. Most of us--rightly or wrongly--were wanting to blame someone or something for the bowl snub, whether it was the AD, the bowl committee... heck, I even read some people blaming the team for losing the last two games.
I think we all privately said or thought some things last night that we'd all be embarrassed about if they'd been put on the Internet; I know I did. In JFord's case, he retweeted/posted other people's thoughts who were in the same mental state as most of us--probably things that shouldn't have been put out for public consumption--and also put something out he learned not to be true, after which he removed it and apologized directly to the person about whom he'd released misinformation. Many of us on here know Jonathan and know that he has nothing but the best intentions when it comes to Tech. There's no need to trash his website or him personally for a mistake that most any of us could have made; I think we're all upset about what happened, but channeling our frustrations into attacks against other board members--especially those that truly love this university--is something we should be above.
-

There are about half a dozen families in Lincoln Parish who call all the shots at Tech and in Ruston. Most of these elites attend the same church.

I believe that's all Ford is saying.
If you go back and read the tweets, that's NOT all he said on twitter. We did not "decline," but that is the language he used. There were other posts I took issue with, too.
The bottom line is that he presented a very biased view of the story, a view that put the university in the worst possible light, and made no attempt to present the nuances of the situation. I don't need to pay to listen to somebody bash the Tech administration. I can do that for free at a DfM tailgate (and get free food to boot).

JFord, you need to write another article on what REALLY happened and start tweeting about it. Good pub after we have been drug through the mud, would be a lot of help.

Re: BleedTechBlue: Et tu, Brute?
Ford, Dixon had a bad hammy. Do you still think there was an underlying hidden issue for the reason he didn't get many carries against SJSU, or do you now believe your credible source?
-
Re: BleedTechBlue: Et tu, Brute?
I just finished reading this entire thread. I want to step back and take my personal feelings towards OUR University, OUR Alumni, OUR TEAM and OUR lost. I wish one person could fall on the sword and it really make everything better, but that's impossible. Whether you want to admit it or not, BleedTechBlue.com helps in recruiting and helps with the casual fan or Joe Smoe wanting to learn more about Louisiana Tech Athletics. JFord does have resources and contacts that LATechSports.com or this board doesn't. If you want to be mad at the situation or the leadership at OUR University, then by all means this is the place to vent. But if you're looking to bully around Louisiana Tech's ONLY inside reporter and Alumnus that will put his name to his work then all you're doing is being a "big man" behind a keyboard.
If you are apart of this website, then chances are you LOVE Louisiana Tech as much as I do. Chances are you are as furious as I am WE got burned. But the chances of helping the situation by targeting the only person willing to take blame for his part, however big or small in your mind, in this debacle is wrong. If you don't respect JFord as a journalist then don't read his work, don't subscribe to his website, but don't use him as a scape goat.
I'm writing a letter to BVD, DR and SD, I'd suggest everyone else do the same.

Didn't read through the whole thread until now. Good man, owning up to your mistake. And for the record, I took issue with the one-sidedness of your tweets. They were certainly one possible explanation of the facts, but probably should have gotten more sides to the story before editorializing against Tech. Still, great maturity in owning up to it.
Now, if someone would please talk Mr Malone off the edge...

This is stupid. We play games over there every year. No reason they couldn't have waited til Sunday, especially with our history with them. Honestly, I hate Shreveport and hope we don't have games in that stadium in the future.

It would, actually, settle the whole thing. Oh, you are one of those jounalists that want to bash, though. If you don't know what REALLY happened, please don't write anything. In a couple of days, you will see and regret it! You will then need to apologize and retract the article - oh, that's right, you would just do that in small print on the bottom of some obscure page, though.
This is one case that Tech officials were not at fault. Hopefully, the whole story will be out soon from credible sources.

Keep trying to convince yourself that, Champ. We had an offer to play in a bowl game and chose not to accept it. No one to blame but ourselves. Sure, we had a lot of issues that went against us, but our administration knew there was a chance we could be left at home and chose to gamble anyway. We lost. All of this excuse-making just sounds like a bad gambler complaining about a bad beat or a backdoor cover.

Listening to Moon Griffon this morning on 710 KEEL, he quoted Bleed Tech Blue several times. Moon basically said Tech turn down the Independence bowl because Tech didn't want to play ULM or any Sunbelt team.

And this is why I will never subscribe to BTB. IMO, it's not journalism, just here say. To charge for that "inside" news is laughable.

Re: BleedTechBlue: Et tu, Brute?
like it or not, that's the perception of a lot of people in Louisiana thanks in no small part to this board. People don't let facts get in the way of their reality and at this point, perception is reality. Bad publicity is generally good publicity but in this case, we are a laughing stock on a national level and now Tech is in damage control mode.

I doubt we are a laughing stock on a national level. College football fans around the nation respect Tech more than most of the Louisiana "fans". They are pretty savvy about the NCAA and the FBS, and know all about politics of bowl games. I would bet there are more national fans that are empathetic to Tech vs. laughing at us. The damage control should be aimed at countering opposing schools' recruiting efforts more than anything else. Other schools' coaches are gonna want to use this against us.

Totally agree..... The people I have heard from in Texas today are saying Tech got screwed. It is the other way around in N. Louisiana from the posts I am reading on here and FB.

JFord, you need to go back and write the truth now and yes tweet the truth and correct some of the damage done out there. maybe call up guys like the above, who ever Moon Griffon is, and correct it as well.

+1 Would love to see this & if JFord is the Tech guy we think he is he'll do it. It'd make him look like a quality guy.

Re: BleedTechBlue: Et tu, Brute?
There is no question that JFord is a Tech guy. He, like most around here, got caught up in the absurdity of the situation and overreacted. He has apologized and corrected himself. Let him do what is best for him.

He will do what is best for Tech. Watch and see........ Many overreacted and those that are rational will correct themselves.

Re: BleedTechBlue: Et tu, Brute?
Professor- Now that all the facts have surfaced, you still blaming BVDV? Still think we should have jumped at the Indy bowl's 'take it or leave it' proposal? Any comment on Liberty bowl guaranteeing us an invite and then leaving us out to dry? How or what would you have done differently? Your twitter meltdown rivaled JFord's. At least he admitted he reacted prematurely.
