Re: 2013 Football Schedule
A pretty solid non-conference schedule for next year, LA Tech fans. Good luck to you and hopefully you'll have more success than we (USF) had when Holtz was our HC. I advise that you remain patient and don't expect the same type of scoring that you were used to with Coach Dykes. Also, if you like FGs instead of TDs, then you'll love Holtz. Good luck to you next year and with the way this conference realignment is going and with so many teams leaving the Big East Conference, it wouldn't surprise me to see USF and LA Tech in the same conference sometime soon.

One frickin OOC at Aillet, and a FCS at that. Sucks....
Even our CUSA home slate is not the most attractive, save for the fact it's CUSA, at least.
Oh well.....go bowling and I'll let this slide.

Anybody have any ideas on ticket prices for the Army game, or will that be a while down the road? I ask because my mother is already making plans for her, my father, and me to go to the game.

Re: 2013 Football Schedule
I kind of questioned why the admin scheduled the game that could be played in Ruston against Texas A&M in Shreveport last season. I see that we play Army in the Cotton Bowl this year as well. What are the pros and cons to playing offsite for home games. My personal opinion would be to try and pack our stadium and embrace the overflow of fans.

I agreed 100%. Don't forego a game in Rustin until we have experienced a sell out to crowd with standing room only!

Because playing Army in the Cotton Bowl opener is big time and will get TECH a ton of PR in the excellent recruiting areas of Texas. We have a large population of Alums in the DFW area. We're also going to start to capture some of the absolutely huge DFW market. Even a very small percentage is a big number.

Had not been annnounced. It surely will be sometime between 11 am and 3 pm.

Re: 2013 Football Schedule
Right, the Army game is a good home-away-from-home game because of the media exposure and local support. You will notice this is precisely the reason games in S'port are a bad idea.
-
Re: 2013 Football Schedule
Well Grambling does the same thing with a rival at the Cotton Bowl and there isn't much national recognition much less an increase in a fan base. Why not show the country that there are other teams in Louisiana, than just LSU and play in Ruston. It kind of beats the purpose of having a stadium or trying to expand the stadium.

Grambling gets a LOT of press on that game - for different reasons, maybe, but a lot of press. We need to market Dallas. Shreveport is not working. Besides, if we start getting some of the Dallas market, if the past holds to form, Shreveport will follow.
-
Re: 2013 Football Schedule
Like to see how that marketing works out. There wasn't much for the Texas A&M game(still turned out great even though we loss).

Apples and Oranges. Grambling is a SWAC school with a weak FCS program. LA Tech had a Top 25 program in 2012 that won 9 games. If you can't see the value in playing Army in an early season game in the Cotton Bowl, God help you.

I know there is a big difference between Grambling and Louisiana Tech. But we struggle to fill the Joe during regular conference games. Though we had a great season last year we didn't exactly end the season on a good note. Scheduling a game there after all the players and coaches we loss makes it hard to see why we would play at a stadium that can seat just over 90,000 people. I'm sure beating Army will look good for us, but they are about on the same level as we are on this season. Army has about the same size fan base as we do and big TV companies like packed stadiums and to keep big TV companies interested why not look like we have lots of fans right at home.
-
Re: 2013 Football Schedule

Re: 2013 Football Schedule
With Ft Sill and Ft Hood within a 3-hour drive not to mention the number of West Point "ring knockers" at those locations and the fact that tickets will probably be cheap and easily aquired. I've got a sneaking suspicion that Army will have a very good showing at this game! Moreover, you can damn well count on the fact that this game will be well advertised at those two posts!

Back in 2006 (?), I attended the Baylor vs Army football game in Waco. This was before RGIII arrived on campus. While Army certainly brought a healthy crowd, it wasn't overwhelming. There were probably 15K Army fans in attendance that day, most wearing Army fatigues. And most were "bused in" from the nearby Army bases you mentioned.
I expect Army fans to be a little more excited about traveling to Dallas in 2013 than Waco in 2006. I'm sure many will try to make an entire weekend of it. I expect Army to bring between 15K and 20K. After that, we need to do our part. LA Tech fans need to travel at least 12K to this game. With 5K walk-ups, total attendance should be between 30K and 35K.
-
Re: 2013 Football Schedule
I plan to drive to the game from Abilene...Although, I will probably have to set some time aside for my wife to go to Grapevine Mills Mall to do some shopping. Better yet, I'll have her drop me off at the game then she can go and do whatever she wants!

Re: 2013 Football Schedule
Of course, if there can be no more flyovers, will the buses to events be curtailed in the fall, too?

Re: 2013 Football Schedule
I'm just stating an opinion, and in the end I could be wrong since the major colleges in Texas either have a bye week or an away game. But I'd rather see red and blue all through(and a fan or two with black and gold) the stadium than just a mix of random colors from local outsiders.

Re: 2013 Football Schedule
I like the look of this schedule.
So refreshing to see schools like Rice, North Texas, Southern Miss, UTSA, and Tulsa on our conference slate, instead of Idaho and San Jose. Close enough that we can travel or they can travel...and we can actually start building some practical regional rivalries.

I'm hoping that re-alignment has stabilized a bit, after the ACC Grant of Rights.
Seems like that move has cemented some things at the Big Boy level...which should calm down the ripple effect on the Big East...which in turn may stabilize everyone else.

It means that all the power conferences are closing ranks in order to limit cash flow out to the smaller conferences. Who needs a money game when you can play Kentucky, Ole Miss and Missouri for free.

2%.
I think the next change will be to eventually expand the playoff to 8 teams. With a twelve game schedule and a conference championship game, the national title contenders would be playing 16 games, an NFL schedule.

Apparently the official identifer for Fox Sports 1 will be FXS1 based on what is posted on the msn.foxsports.com site.

FOX Sports 1 official announcement using FS1: http://msn.foxsports.com/other/story...network-030513
They may have changed their minds though.
The Army TV info hasn't been officially released yet. FSN only has a window for an 11:00 AM kickoff that day. FS1 has windows for 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM kickoffs that day. FOX only has a window for a 6:00 PM kickoff that day. None of those time slots match-up with the 2:30 PM announced kickoff, but the only window that comes close is the 3:00 PM kickoff on FS1. It should also be noted that FOX does have 2:30 PM kickoffs on other weekends. Either the windows have to be shifted or be created, or our kickoff time has to be changed. When the game was originally announced last year, BVDV did say that the game would be played on FOX. The ElAyTechSports.com initial TV press release for this season was filled with errors regarding our TV games broadcast by Fox Sports. ESPN.com is reporting that it will be on FS1, but FoxSports.com is reporting FSN. I still think it's too early to jump to any conclusions, but my money is still on the Army game being broadcast on FS1. We may not know for sure until 6 days before the game.
-
Re: 2013 Football Schedule
FSN normally has game windows at 11:00, 2:30, and 6:00. The late 9:15/9:30 window went away with the Pac 12 Network and E$PN picking up those games.
If kickoff time stays at 2:30, I'd put my money on FSN.
Fox appears to be leaning more toward using FX to redesignate its cable networks. Fox Soccer is apparently going to become FXX to expand the current FX entertainment offerings. Fox Movie Channel has basically become FXM. Still unclear whether Fox Soccer Plus will eventually become Fox Sports 3.
Based on what Murdock has done with Sky Sports in the UK and Fox Sports in Australia, there should be a minimum of three numbered sports networks. Sky Sports has 4 full-time networks not counting Sky Sports News plus two other specialty channels (F1 and Xtra). Fox Sports has three numbered channels, Fox Footy (AFL specialty channel), Fox Sports News, Fox Sports Play, plus Speed and Fuel.

September 28 is the last Saturday of the MLB regular season, and FSN is obligated to show baseball in the 2:30 time slot on many of their regional networks.

Nothing new there...that's what FSN-Plus channels are for.
Only 5 of 14 scheduled game times that day are listed in the 3:05/3:10 CT range (SD-SF, CLE-MIN, MIL-NYM, OAK-SEA, and PIT-CIN) with COL-LAD listed TBA. And unless something has changed this year, it is FOX and not FSN that has Saturday regional games. Even if the MLB games are on some FSN affiliates, the others would still need football programming in that window.

Re: 2013 Football Schedule
Interesting note from Brett McMurphy regarding Florida International:
Quote:
FIU starting RB Kedrick Rhodes dismissed from program for violating team policy. Led FIU in rushing last year.
The top FIU rusher returning from last year's team is the QB Jake Medlock (87 carries, 236 yards, 3 TDs). The top 3 rushers from last year are gone.

Re: 2013 Football Schedule
The UTSA game time was announced for 2:30 PM.
The NC State game will also be on ESPN3 for markets without the ACC Network.

Re: 2013 Football Schedule
Tech's Homecoming game is schedule for October 19th at 2:30 pm. Also scheduled that day is Trace Adkins' concert at the Horseshoe Casino in Bossier City starting at 8 PM. Is there any chance that Trace will appear for the game or be a part of the festivities (National Anthem, a brief pre-game concert)?

No doubt he'll be there. Dude loves his former team. Whether we make a half-assed attempt to cash in on that is another matter.
Two years ago when he DID do the NA, it was bone-chillingly awesome.

I figured Trace would be at Homecoming, since he's been at games in the recent past and did the National Anthem at least once. It's the cashing in on Trace's presence by the university administration that I was curious about.
What if the university decided to host a concert with Trace Adkins (or Kix Brooks) at the TAC the night before Homecoming in future years? If you purchase season tickets to Tech football, you get free admission to the concert and first dibs on the primo seats according to how much you've donated to LTAC the past 12 months.

Yippee! Thought for sure I'd have to miss a very dear friend's wedding when I got the invite for a Sept 14th ceremony at 6PM! But, we play on the 12th that week. Whew! No way was I gonna miss a Tech home game (they are so few and far between this year ) and hated I was gonna have to tell my friend, sorry, can't make it. But, no problemo. However, who the hell schedules a frickin wedding, a frickin anything! for a September Saturday???? Stoooooooooo-pid.

If I'm not mistaken, we tried that several years ago. Had to cancel because there weren't enough pre-sells to risk low show concert.

Re: 2013 Football Schedule
Lots of social events get planned for the fall. The sickening part is that most of them get planned around lsu crap.
