USA Today College Football Countdown FKA Pre-Snap Read Countdown FKA The Quad Countdo
Paul Myerberg's annual countdown has begun, which means summer is here! Football is only one season away! Can you feel it? Go Dawgs!
USA Today College Football Countdown
No. 125: Georgia State
Who is No. 124? This team lost its six games against eventual bowl teams in 2012 by a combined score of 278-75.
-
Re: USA Today College Football Countdown FKA Pre-Snap Read Countdown FKA The Quad Cou
I know you were thinking it.
No. 124: UMass
Who is No. 123? This team's coach graduated from the same college as a one-term senator from Minnesota.
-
Re: USA Today College Football Countdown FKA Pre-Snap Read Countdown FKA The Quad Cou
Ahhh, the Pre-Snap Countdown! You know that FB season cannot be that far away when it starts. :D
So predictions on where we appear? I am going to guess 73-87. Do not see us much higher than that due to all the losses on offense, changes, and general uncertainty right now.
-
Re: USA Today College Football Countdown FKA Pre-Snap Read Countdown FKA The Quad Cou
I say we'll be high 50's to low 60's. I'll stick 58 as my guess. Myerberg seems to do more research than most, and while we certainly won't be as high as last year I don't think we'll fall completely off the radar.
-
Re: USA Today College Football Countdown FKA Pre-Snap Read Countdown FKA The Quad Cou
NO MORE TRIPS TO MOSCOW!
No. 123: Idaho
Low point: Idaho lost to Texas State and UTSA. That's not good. While Louisiana Tech beat up on several teams, the Bulldogs rolled up 839 yards of total offense against the Vandals on Oct. 20. That loss was the last straw for Akey, and deservedly so.
Who is No. 122? The first game this team every played came against a school famous for producing (among other folks) a forward for the Indiana Pacers, a former All-Pro receiver for the St. Louis Rams and a former outfielder for the Royals, Reds, Red Sox and Mets.

I'm not throwing stones at the MAC. I genuinely enjoy MACtion. Toledo is my favorite MAC team to watch. The more football on TV the better.
I'm also excited about watching some MW football on ESPN and CBSSN this year. Colorado State, Wyoming, New Mexico, Air Force, San Diego State, and UNLV were invisible under their former TV contract.

Re: USA Today College Football Countdown FKA Pre-Snap Read Countdown FKA The Quad Cou
Here's our first opponent in the countdown.
No. 119: UTSA
Who is No. 118? The coach of tomorrow's team shares a birthday (not the same year) with a wide receiver who held the NFL record for career receptions until the 1995 season.
-
Re: USA Today College Football Countdown FKA Pre-Snap Read Countdown FKA The Quad Cou
Really? I don't necessarily agree that UTSA is worse than FIU, but I guess at this point they are kind of interchangeable in a similar way as F_U. Which is why I think FIU may be the next one.

I think this is a bull***t ranking. I'm no UTSA fan but the UTSA team that I saw play LA Tech last year was as VERY well coached team. I have a hard time believing UTSA will end up this low. Larry Coker is putting something legitimate together down there, and we better buckle up.

Re: USA Today College Football Countdown FKA Pre-Snap Read Countdown FKA The Quad Cou
They played us close because we had no defense and couldn't cover a TE. They will be playing a full FBS schedule this year.

I don't disagree with that. But I thought UTSA was also a lot meaner and nastier than we were.

Opponent #2
No. 118: FIU
The lone good news might be that FIU avoids Tulsa in league play; the bad news is that FIU gets Marshall, Louisiana Tech and East Carolina at home, and when it comes to 2013, FIU would rather play those strong Conference USA teams on the road and get winnable games at home.
Who is No. 117? This program has won more than four games in a season only once since 1996.

That is an amazing score......... I don't see how a team can score that much in one game. Even 3 OT would be extremely difficult.

It almost seems like they took turns running the floor with no defensive effort at all. Just let the other team pass it in and run down for an uncontested lay-up or 3 pter. You would almost have to plan a score that high.

I agree that OT's would be needed but Troy would have outscored Devry by over 100 in the last overtime if that happened. Looking back at their scores for that season, they scored below 100 in only 6 games out of 29. They also posted scores of 149, 148, 147, and 145 that season.

Re: USA Today College Football Countdown FKA Pre-Snap Read Countdown FKA The Quad Cou
As I suspected. If you listen to the commentators at the start of the video, one gives the 3 keys for Troy to be able to set another record. The 3rd key was to get "cooperation from Devry". He "suspected they would cooperate because they'd had such a wonderful time last year scoring over 100 points."

Re: USA Today College Football Countdown FKA Pre-Snap Read Countdown FKA The Quad Cou
Of we land 45 this year with our schedule, we lose only one game and finish in the top 25 based on record alone. Only 2 maybe 3 games on our schedule that worry me this year.

TBD (2012 final re-ranking)
Tulsa (No. 27)
La Tech (No. 32)
NC State (No. 61)
Rice (No. 70)
Southern Miss (No. 124)
GAME(S) TO WATCH
— Rice: It's either Rice, a reining bowl team; Louisiana Tech, a team fresh off nine wins but under a new staff; or Iowa State, again the Jayhawks' best chance for a Big 12 win.
Who is No. 95? One of this university's former graduates was the fifth of eight theorists to win the Nobel Prize for studies on decision making.

No. 95: California
Lots of talk about the Bulldogs. Very interesting read.

Who is No. 94? This university is a not a mainstream Division I school, according to the president of the NCAA.

Another one of our opponents. Rice.

Re: USA Today College Football Countdown FKA Pre-Snap Read Countdown FKA The Quad Cou
This is a no brainer. Has to be Rice.

I love this line..."Louisiana Tech went 5-7 in 2010, 8-5 in 2011 and 9-3 a year ago, missing out on a postseason berth due to an extreme case of mismanagement by the university administration."

One piece of LA Tech info I picked up from this article: On 1,054 plays last year, Tech passed the ball 533 times. That's a pass/run ratio of 50.5% passes to runs. That's great offensive balance.

We know how that worked out for him.

I don't think that's a hard and fast philosophical decision (like efficient practices or the pace of play). It's just just something Franklin had been experimenting with after coaching in the arena league. I don't think they are married to that if the personnel didn't work.

GAME(S) TO WATCH
— Louisiana Tech: Tulsa has a solid lead over the rest of Conference USA's West Division. The race for second, however, should come down to the Owls and Louisiana Tech – with a date in Houston on Nov. 16 likely deciding both the final standings and whether one or both reach bowl eligibility. While Rice should win knock out a midseason winning streak against UTSA, New Mexico State and UTEP, the season comes down to how it fares against the stronger teams on the schedule: Texas A&M, Kansas, Houston, Tulsa and the Bulldogs.
Who is No. 93? The dean of this university's nursing department got her Master's and PhD from two schools in its conference.

Wow. Our strength of schedule for 2013 is laughable. But I'm loving it.
Seriously though.....if Skip can't win 7 or 8 games this year, he needs to be doing something else for a living.
