Jimmy Watson just tweeted t spoon has been relieved of her duties.
great
did have some guts i can return to games
props to administration
and stick it up yours....this is a performance based business period no one said anything about her personally
I know she is a great fan and a tremendous former player...should have no bearing on coaching
“This decision was very difficult to make and was not made without careful consideration of all the facts and implications,” McClelland said. “We are grateful for the loyal and dedicated service Teresa has given to the program during her tenure. She is a big part of the lore of this storied program, and her accomplishments as a Louisiana Tech player and coach will always be remembered.”
As a player at Louisiana Tech, Weatherspoon helped lead legendary head coach Leon Barmore’s team to the 1988 NCAA Division I national title. She was named the Wade Trophy winner as the nation’s top collegiate player as a senior.
“Lady Techster basketball has a great tradition and a tremendous national reputation,” McClelland said. “The measuring stick for success in women’s basketball at Louisiana Tech is higher than most programs around the country. The University is committed to reviving the competitiveness of the Lady Techsters.”
McClelland said that a national search for Weatherspoon’s successor will begin immediately but that no timetable has been established for hiring her replacement.--University release
She deserves credit for years as player and for baling out long that season
Time to move forward...who do they look at
The only responsible thing to do based on how long she has been here, the results, and how much we pay her. Speaking of which, cut the women's coach salary 50% and add it to Coach White's.
r up the salary and improve the program
Kim Mulkey.
OK. There. I typed her name.
Can that be the last time we see it in this post? Probably not.
I'm shocked that the administration pulled the trigger on firing Teresa Weatherspoon, but it had to be done.
Teresa saved our butts after she took over for Chris Long and led the team to the Women's NIT & two trips to the NCAA Tournament in her first three seasons. However, the bottom fell out shortly afterward. The program had to change direction after two straight losing seasons and no improvement on the horizon.
Either the talent isn't there, or the players aren't being developed to their full potential. Both cases don't reflect well on the head coach after three straight struggling seasons.
I wish Teresa Weatherspoon the best and thank her for her years of service to the university as a player and coach. From here, it's onward and upward for the Lady Techsters.
The only celebrating to do here is that Tech now has the athletic and university administration with the cojones to make decisions that have to be made. We couldn't say that this time last year. And that bodes well for the future of Tech athletics.
Not saying it is not the correct decision, but it makes me sad. I wish her the best.
Kim should be offered the job first. I realize she probably won't accept such a cut in pay, but we'll never know if we don't ask. Another candidate to consider is VJ
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vickie_Johnson
and p. 45 of http://www.wnba.com/silverstars/medi...edia_Guide.pdf
I'm sure there are many others to consider too.
This is the first time the Women's Basketball Forum has had more visitors than football and mbb in a long time.
Sad it ended like this.
very sad day for me here!
Not so sure that all the great talent comeing in should still consider
LaTech
If they do any coach will be able to have a great season next year disspite their coaching ability!
We will owe all that to coach TSpoon!!
Good luck my friend!
Your legacy at LaTech will always be remembered!
***
Now, I would not mind la. Select coaching this team Coach TSpoon was finally able to put together that is sure to take the program forward!
Just a sad day for me that she will not be there to coach the team she finely worked so hard to get together for LaTech!
You know La. Select and VJ are cousins!
I cannot celebrate Spoon being let go. My wishes have always been for the Techsters to do well, though. I hope Tech made the right decision. We turned a chapter and I wish nothing but the best to Spoon for the future. No matter what happened on the court the last couple of years, she has been a great ambassador for Louisiana Tech from the time she stepped on campus as a player until now. I hope she will continue to support the program!
They say there is no timetable, but they better act quick. We do not want to lose any current players or recruits. Next year was the best class on paper in years.
Congrats to the admin for making an adult decision. Now that they know how, let's see them repeat it by dumping Sim as well.
Making these decisions is never easy. Spoon will be fine and end up thriving wherever she goes. She did the best she could with what she had to work with.
Brooke and Scott would be a good call, Tom Collins would be a good call but I would love to see them hit up Paul Westhead who was at Oregon.
This will cause some of the recruits to back away but the new coach will have three years to get his/her kids and system in place.
Yes i support both...i am a seson ticket holder...i just speak as i feel...always said it is nothing personal...i appreciate her as a player and the effort she put in...
Sppon will land on her feet and I will continue to thank her for all she did to help build the Techster's into what they were! She is a true Tech person and, from our conversation this morning, she still loves La. Tech! Now, the BIG questions is if we will be able to keep our recruits and players - plus, get someone that will get us back on track. Finding the right coach is a difficult task.
She is part of the history of the program. She has an infectious personality. She is a leader on the court as a player. Those things did not translate into her being a good coach. I was one of the fans who supported her being hired when Long was fired. I did question lack of experience, but I thought she would be willing to listen, learn, and surround herself with assistants who had far more experience. Unfortunately, that is not what happened.
Spoon is now back where she belongs...part of the past of Lady Techster basketball. Now it is time to turn the attention to the future of the program.
While I understand your opinion, she has also received a lot...a free education, national profile, opportunity to play for national championships, and a salary as a head coach with no head coaching experience. Teresa has given a lot to Tech, but she has also received a lot.
I will always be a fan of Spoon!!
Here's BTB's article on the release: http://latech.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1620686
Good luck Spoon. This didn't work out but she was and always will be a key part of the great history that was Lady Techster basketball.
Tech just needs to go about the business of finding a way of becoming relevant in women's basketball once again.
Champ....would the kids we signed have a way to op out
Just curious...sounds like a good class
Here comes Karl.
@TheDeliverer_32: It's is an absolute sad day at Louisiana Tech Athletics, with the firing of Coach Spoon.
@TheDeliverer_32: And I am ashamed, once again, on the way the powers to be handled the situation. So until Louisiana Tech start to think about the students.
@TheDeliverer_32: ..and student athletes my family and I will no longer give financial support to the school.
@TheDeliverer_32: Also, I have a whole lot of time. Why don't, before decisions are made, we have a open forum. To get more people involved for the betterment
@TheDeliverer_32: ..of our community and Louisiana Tech. LA Tech is more and more reminding me of our federal government who's holding them accountable?
@TheDeliverer_32: One other thought, wouldn't It be nice to have two to three former Tech athletes involved in decision making? I'll do it for free!
Then KJ chimes in:
@Kj63Kj: @TheDeliverer_32 LSU!!!
wow
have to say he aint afraid to speak his mind
While I can appreciate Karl's distrust of our admin, they were right to fire Spoon, and I trust his judgement even less. Rupp was his guy....abject disaster. Karl has no experience in college athletics outside of hanging around Tech lately. He is a big donor and he can carry his money if he wants to, but I am not sure we should let all big donors/former athletes have a say in running the athletic department.
Karl still in the SACOTU phase of his life.
I just wanna know how many mens and womens games he attended this year . . . Saw him at Tulane FB game.
OK, BTB's post was based on the "release."
So was what KTBS posted: http://www.ktbs.com/story/24986952/weatherspoon-fired
So was what TNS posted: http://www.thenewsstar.com/viewart/2...a-Weatherspoon
So was what KTVE posted: http://www.myarklamiss.com/story/d/story/teresa-weatherspoon-out-as-la-tech-coach/10341/euSoZQxCPEWkdxrPmQRR3w
Saturday night at 10 pm., yeah such institutional news all originates with the SID. Then . . . everyone adds their twist.
i am in position to give my opinion and i do...to both schools...i have wxpressed my feelings on here and to our leaders at both
great thing about this is i do not have to worry bout what others think....we all can speak our mind...like i say i wish her nothing but the best...but i felt change was needed
TKS
get out of here...my post generally surround a need to show people what an idiot I am.
cant please all boosters
Believe what you want..i talk to spoon and staff members regularly...no one person has total inside info...the difference is i call it as i see it...i attended most every game since 1995 but i reached a breaking point in dec..i took a stand...it was my view...just ready to move forward..looks like the powers to be saw it as i did too
Given the timing of the move, i have to believe that conversations have taken place about who might be available or who might be interested in the job. Whatever the timetable, the fact remains that the late signing period opens in mid April and we still need to find a post player who can rebound, score and defend. Also, it appears the new coach will have to talk to current players as well. Some of them are posting on twitter (Whitney) about not being sure of next move.
I hope our next coach is someone who lives a natural lifestyle...they will probably fit in better in Ruston.
Karl really comes across as a Jekyll and Hyde kind of guy, doesn't he? I have had limited interaction with him and never anything negative on a personal level. Would love to know if other prominent donors/ex-athletes of other schools pitch fits like him?
Rooster your a complete idiot for even letting that garbadge spew from your mouth. It is uneducated bigots like you that give good people a bad name!!!
How bout they hire the best person that is qualified for the job no matter what lifestyle is!!! I know it is small town mentality but dang!![/QUOTE]
i am for that...hire the best coach period
i dont agree but respect your right to state your position
That makes as much sense as a gay person saying they don't want a hetro as the coach. Lesbian, gay or Straight don't matter as long as he or she is the best for the job. We are in 2014 way past sexual orientation having a role in who gets a job even in Ruston Louisiana.
At the risk of upsetting DogsWin & TechFanno1, this move (firing Spoon) was long overdue. There's absolutely no reason the Lady Techster program should remain in the crapper. It's time to climb out, and this is the first step.
At least now I know we have an AD.
agree
2014, 2024, or 1999...doesn't matter what year to me. I would rather not have a lesbian as a coach. Am I right? Am I wrong? Don't know, I think I am right, b/c it is my opinion. And that and $1 will buy you a cold beer. Now, calling someone a complete idiot and calling their opinion "garbage", and an uneducated bigot, that in itself is "garbage". Thousands of men shed blood and died so you and I could have a different opinion. It's 2014, get over calling someone juvenile names b/c they have a different opinion than you.
What part of hire the best person for the job can you not understand. You hire who is best qualified not who someone sleeps with common sense tells you that but apparently common sense is pissed off and not speaking to you.
At this time I am reminded of the words in a country and western song. The words are, "Thank God and Greyhound she is gone."
Would you be ok with someone expressing their opinion if it was "I prefer not having a Christian as a coach" or "I prefer not having a black person as a coach" or "I prefer not having someone hispanic as a coach?"
Yes, it is your right to state your opinion. And it is phil's right to call it bigotry and garbage. That's what happens when you express your opinion in a public way. It is open to be attacked.
Three words for you to think back on: First Techster coach.
Glad she is gone. I LOVED watching her play....and pretty much loved watching her sister cheer for her as I loved watching Spoon play. But, she has not gotten it done and it was time for her to go. I do wish her well. I hope we will be back winning some games with a new coaching staff!
Rooster's wording is pretty ironic considering gay people are living a "natural lifestyle" -- It is what feels natural to them. What is natural to you isn't natural to others. Why do you like the things you do? Why are you attracted to blondes, or red heads, or heavy women? You don't know why, bc it just comes natural. Homosexuality isn't a choice. The fact of the matter is Spoon is living the lifestyle she knows to be natural.
And no, I am not gay.
wow this is getting way off base hire the best coach
Meanwhile...back on the news at hand....
The Lady Techsters finished the year 12-20 overall, 5-11 in conference. Considering this was Spoon's 4th full year (plus she coached 11 games in the 2008-2009 year) at the helm, absolutely NOBODY should be surprised that she was fired. Sorry, but basketball coaches --both men & women-- with 12-20 records GET FIRED!!! Always have, and always will.
I think we should talk to the son/daughter of Pat Summitt, Coach K, Bobby Knight, Rick Patino, or another offspring of famous coach. Surely that will work.
Tyler would not be a bad look. He is an awesome person with name recognition. He understands the legacy and is a heck of a coach.
It's not hate...geeez people. My gay cousin and her girlfriend of 25 years came fishing to my house yesterday and I gave them both a hug and told my cousin I loved her when she left...I just don't want a lesbian as our next coach. It has nothing to do with hate or race...you liberals pull out the race card on everything. Nothing to do with insecurity...just don't want a lesbian as our next coach...its that easy.
Actually I think it was a bad move - can't see how the money works out unless the $413K buyout (rumor floating around El Paso) was 100% donated
I just want a COACH with a good history of winning at some level - jc, ncaa, naia
