What are the chances we retain these three individuals for next season?
I always like to think ahead. But what are the chances Louisiana Tech has Manny Diaz, Coach Holtz, and Kenneth Dixon around for next year? The first two going to a higher paid position else where, and Dixon opting for the draft.
-
Re: What are the chances we retain these three individuals for next season?
I'll just throw this out there. I think our AD needs to do whatever necessary to keep Diaz. But my opinion is we have a 75% chance of keeping Dixon, 50% of keeping Holtz, and about 10% chance of keeping Diaz.

I'll play and say we keep all 3 of these guys. As it's going now and if it continues, the first two deserve a very nice bump in pay/bonuses. And Dixon needs one more year in Ruston before a great career in the pros. I think he has already stated he is staying at TECH for his senior year.

I agree but I think Diaz will have several offers at P5 teams. I'd would very surprised he stays.
-
Re: What are the chances we retain these three individuals for next season?
I'd be shocked if Holtz wasn't here. I think Dixon will be making a mistake if he leaves. I could see Diaz getting a job elsewhere.

I vote all speculation threads like this wait until after the regular season is complete. Nobody is going anywhere before the C-USA Championship Game.

Re: What are the chances we retain these three individuals for next season?
Geeez. We're still trying to win a CUSA Championship in football and a brand new poster comes up with this? Let's worry about that other stuff at the appropriate time. And no, this is not the appropriate time.

I agree with all 3. Of course, we have already seen that anything can happen when the dominoes start falling. If we lose anyone I would think it would be Diaz- but I certainly hope that doesn't happen.

Re: What are the chances we retain these three individuals for next season?
10 Defensive Coordinators to Watch Out For
6. Manny Diaz- Louisiana Tech
You’ve definitely heard of Manny Diaz, probably from his time as defensive coordinator under Mack Brown at Texas. Before the debacle at Texas, though Diaz coached at Mississippi State in 2010, turning the Bulldog defense around and paving the way for the stellar defense they are playing today. Diaz is currently coaching under Skip Holtz, and has helped guide the team to a 7-3 record, with losses to Auburn and Oklahoma. The defense, which ranks 27th in the nation, averages 2.5 sacks per game and allows only 342.9 yards a game. The Bulldogs (of Louisiana Tech) lead the nation in forcing turnovers with 11 fumble recoveries and 17 interceptions. Diaz has the potential to become a big time coach at any moment. If not for the implosion at Texas, he might have been a candidate to take over once Mack Brown left.
The other guy Holtz wanted is at #5. (David Gibbs)

Never knew. I've been reading your moniker as sport instead of the abbreviation of shreveport all these years.

Re: What are the chances we retain these three individuals for next season?
We keep all three...
Dixon isn't going pro
Holtz hasn't hit his stride (can't believe I said that)...
Diaz will weigh his options carefully and will not jump at first offer, especially into a situation that maybe gone at the end of one year ala Texas Tech

Some think the deal cut with Diaz was a "handshake" two year guarantee from Diaz. Hope so. He is or will soon be a HC candidate. Working on a coaching staff and depending on his HC for a paycheck may not be in his future post LaTech.

I agree with this -
By all accounts he seems to have all the skills to be a very good HC

Dixon & Holtz - 100%, Diaz, 50/50?

Dream scenario.

Re: What are the chances we retain these three individuals for next season?
Holtz will be at Tech for at least 5 years. Some of you have really short memories. Holtz had 3 really bad teams in a row before this year. No big school is going to hire him after one good year. Diaz will stay until he gets a good head coaching job. He won't take a ulm or ull job. No doubt, Dixon will be back.

I wonder about Tony Petersen. Is Holtz going to turn the offense back over to Petersen next year? What does Petersen do if he doesn't?

Can he coach special teams?

He was co-OC at Marshall. I think the only reason he came to Tech was to be able to call plays. I think he bolts if Holtz calls plays next year.

Yes, iirc he was passing game coordinator/qb coach. Not the man calling plays. Where does he go since Skip yanked play calling away. I would be leary if i were hiring an oc.

You're getting back to my time. I mowed the grass for Hood's in the mid-late 60's and ate lots of pre-hunt breakfasts at the PO Cafe throughout that decade. Nice to hear those names again.:)
Anyone remember Ruston's Magic Grill, which Tech students/Rustonites affectionately call "The Tragic?"

One "Kickapoo" was a 24 hour restaurant and motel in Bossier City at the corner of Benton Road/Hwy 80. It was open into the 1980's. Big hangout for local politicians and late night partiers.

One thing you will learn quickly is that our admin, coaches, players, recruiters, recruits, opposing recruiters, professors, local, state, and federal governments, and major media outlets all get their inside scoop, breaking news, and game to game adjustments from BB&B. Don't talk about it here unless you want it to come true. We are the braintrust from which all decisions are made. Shake it off and welcome to the board.

Thank you for the input. Since I'm new, I decided to look back at some of your posts to see what kinds of things I should post to foster a positive atmosphere to win a CUSA Championship. Here are a couple of positive things YOU posted: "We probably have the worst SPECIAL TEAMS that I've seen in the last 20 years here at Tech. We can't reliably kick FG's, we can't punt in key situations (as exemplified yesterday) and our kick/punt.." and " Whoever called the plays last week (Holtz?) needs to have the playbook taken AWAY from them. Permanently." OK, I guess it's a do as I say, not as I do thing. Or maybe that was just the appropriate time to say those things?

Most of the Griff's have closed, yet the one in Ruston continues on. We ate there a couple of years ago when we went back for a game. My wife actually worked there for a while when we were students in the early 1980s. It seemed like a fun place to work. I don't think there have been any upgrades since she worked there. The food tastes the same.

It was a fun place to work. I worked there WAY back in high school and Tech 67 -72 and DogSince65 worked there too. I'd be off for Tech games and had to hurry over to work the after game rush. Still got a few good friends I worked with there back then.

Is this the place that opened in the spring of 1966? At first the place I am remembering had prices similar to McDonald's. There was no McD's in Ruston then.

. Worked with Vince T who later owned and opened Stowes. Just a bunch of kids trying to work our way thru college-- about $1 hour. To this day I have great memories of Griffs and more importantly-- whenever I go into fast food place I treat workers with respect. Same with restaurants, you can tell a lot about a person by the way they treat waiters ... Etc

Would have gladly served is needed. Probably would have helped me mature earlier than I did. Was never a problem kid, but admittedly should have grown up more quickly. Never worked in fast food industry, but did work at a local business in Ruston while in school. Learned to work hard there. Definitely appreciate food service employees who bust their butts for customers.i have encountered several lately who go way above what is required and I let them know every time to keep I up and fast food job won't be needed much longer because of bigger and better opportunities.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi.../2a/Griffy.png"Griffy" exhorted patrons to stock up on fifteen-cent hamburgers.
Griff’s Hamburgers, or
Griff's Burger Bar, is a regional
fast food chain founded in 1960 by
Griff's of America, Inc. of
Kansas City, Missouri, United States. At one time they had locations nationwide with the majority in the South near highway exits.
[1]
Griff's was named for the founder, Harold Griffin.
[2]
The restaurant buildings were of a patented
[3] A-frame design,
[1] produced by Valentine Diners
[4] of
Wichita, Kansas. Later restaurants sported more conventional
architecture. A bright yellow sign read HAMBURGERS in big block capitals.
[5] The restaurants offered both drive-thrus and patio dining.
[5]
Most of the stores were located in high traffic locations, such as near a highway off-ramp, or along Route 66.
[5] There was one on the corner of Caruthers and Independence in Cape Girardeau, Missouri in the 1960s, catty corner from old Central High School.
Corporate headquarters for Griff's of America is now in Dallas, Texas. The first store opened in Texas was in Fort Worth, TX on East Lancaster Avenue and stores remain open in
Arvada and
Denver,
Colorado;
Bossier City,
Ruston and
Shreveport,
Louisiana;
Albuquerque, New Mexico; and
Dallas,
Fort Worth,
Haltom City,
Garland,
Irving,
Mesquite, and
San Antonio,
Texas.
[1] A location in
Sedalia, Missouri closed in late 2011.
[2]
The restaurant chain was featured in multiple installments of the
Zippy the Pinhead comic strip; on November 15, 2004,
[6] February 10, 2005
[7] December 19, 2006,
[8] and September 2, 2007.

It was the fifteen cent hamburgers I remember. Something a broke college kid could afford in 1966 as a break from Tolliver.

. Thread was getting repetitive anyway-- one of my Griffs stories is night Willis Reed came in, few weeks after playing NBA finals on basically one leg. Also, there was older man who was official Tech baseball statistician-- he came in after every game, got a Giant burger-- bread only-- threw bread away and gave his old dog the meat. Vince T was manager -- he later opened Stowes and goes to most football games

I hope we can keep Holtz and Diaz. I think Dixon will stay 1 more year and set every RB record in Tech history. As long as Coach getting 500k from buyout , he won't have to hurry for bigger salary-- hold out for right job-- he doing solid job recruiting for future and has contacts for assistant coaches

He won't ever have to have a bigger salary...unless he wants to leave.
Lets just enjoy the wins most of us weren't expecting and not worry about losing a coach until he actually earns his bonus money. No need to pay it out before he earns it like with did with Dykes.

. You don't want to know what happens to food when rude people order-- certain folks had attitudes and extra pepper or salt were the nicer things-- liked the joke

Re: What are the chances we retain these three individuals for next season?
Almost got into a fight at a burger joint in Baytown Texas in 1976. They were taking orders at the counter, accepting the money, and then calling numbers as the food got ready. Two guys refused to move after they paid. One loud one said "I gave you money and I am not moving until you give me food. That's what we call having good Yankee business sense up north." He was giving the little girl behind the counter grief and I said, "down here it is called being a jerk". The guy bowed up and flashed but a huge pipe fitter stepped between us and said,"A damn Yankee a**hole jerk". The guy stepped aside and asked for his order to go. I don't think it would have taken much for the pipe fitter to wipe the floor with him. The good Lord takes care of fools like me.

You've got too much time on your hands.
My criticism of our special teams play and our play calling was in reference to issues that our team needs to correct NOW, especially if we expect to win a CUSA championship. Your post, on the other hand, is more suited for the off season. Can't you see the difference?

Holtz has done a great job this year, but he's calling plays with Sokol at QB, not Higgins/Young. Peterson would almost certainly have more success calling plays with this year's offensive personnel vs the hand he was dealt last season.
Dixon healthy enough to start every game this season (averaging 20 touches/game) behind a better and more experienced O-line, and better QB play leading to more production from WRs have definitely made Skippy's job a little easier.
That said, not taking anything away from the job Holtz has done. Just stating that it's hard to evaluate Peterson given last year's youth and inexperience.

I agree with you. I was just wondering who's going to call plays next year.

Hopefully, whomever Manny Diaz hires as his offensive coordinator.

Diaz would be a great O coordinator. He would punt on first down just to watch what's he passionate about. Aggressive D.
