Higgins will start next week and "JMar will be a superstar"
Coach talking with Dave
Higgins was still a captain for the game?
Did post-game show mention anything on status of Kitchen?
I think Smith earned another start.
You stick with Smith at this point....come on HCSH
J'Mar earn it today. He is or starter.
Our*
Start Higgins, but give J'Mar the entire second half.
Smith will only get better.
You have the possibility of a 4 year starter...
I'm sorry Higgins lost his chance.
When Higgins was named starter he was the best according to our coaches.
He lost his job because of a disciplinary action. Had he lost it because of injury it would be different.
HCSH looks bad if he takes the opportunity away from Higgins at this point.
This crap game our AD set up for next week is the perfect game to allow our QB competition to shine.
Yeah, I was very impressed by J'Mar's composure. He appears to be capable of better "game time performance" than what Higgins has shown in the past. Higgins may practice better but if it doesn't translate into game performance then it doesn't matter.
J'Mar should be the starter. Impressed by his composure. Best performance by a Fr QB in a LONG time.
after the first half today, i felt more comfortable with the ball in smith's hands than i ever have with it in higgins's. that said, higgins must have shown the coaches more than i have ever seen in him if they are even considering starting him at this point.
I keep hearing and reading that JMar has "won" the opportunity to start.
According to what our coach said before the game, today was not a competition.
My vote (for what it's worth): Stick with Smith!!!
Just tying to keep it real. Our fans (including me) are excited about what they saw today with J'Mar. If HCSH makes a decision on what he saw today without giving his named starter the same opportunity to "show his stuff" he was never being genuine about what he said going into this game. He is not one to flip flop on emotions.
J'Mar's head may need a week off to clear after that helmet to,helmet hit.
He made a decision today when he kept trotting J'Mar out there. He's bull headed if he pulls J'Mar...plain and simple. That's not emotion, that's recognizing that a young talent has made the most of his opportunity and he shouldn't get yanked because of some boneheaded coach speak.
So because the fans think J'Mar is better (compared to what we've seen in limited action from Higgins) HCSH should forget what he watched in the Spring and Fall and go with what he saw today...yeah that's emotion.
Not a single person that I know of said that J'Mar was the best QB before today. He may be. He looked great for a RS Freshman, but HCSH is going to stick to his guns and he should.
Imagine if Bill Belichick had decided to stubbornly stick with Drew Bledsoe instead of turning to Tom Brady. I don't know what you saw today, but I saw a young QB who showed me something we've never seen from Ryan Higgins in his four years here. He showed mobility, he showed poise, and he showed an upside that Higgins doesn't possess. It's not like Ryan Higgins hasn't had opportunities in the past to show what he's capable of doing. He's never shown anything close to what J'Mar showed today.
I agree completely, but we both know that's not the way HCSH operates. I believe he will start Higgins in the crap game next week because of what he has said publicly since the DUI.
Apparently there was never a point today when HCSH felt like JMar needed to be yanked. I thought he might do it after then interception, but then I saw him talking to J'Mar afterwards and knew he'd be back. I never really expected him to yank him today unless he REALLY messed up.
You're 100% right on this issue.
Higgins has earned the starting job, but he didn't earn the start today.
Higgins will start next week and he should. It should comfort us to know we have a legitimate option behind him, and a potential three year starter next year. One game doesn't make a season's hero, and he still had plenty of issues to correct.
I don't think anyone saw things playing out this way.
I certainly thought we'd see Higgins in the second UNLESS J'Mar did something special.
A few holding calls and some field goals away from upsetting a bowl team from the SEC at their place in your first start...AS A FRESHMAN. Skip's never had a conundrum like this at Tech.
The right course of action is plain. He should have the courage to take it. I think he just might.
Smith played better than I expected but he still didn't make a lot of throws that are routine in our offense. Nothing in the seams over the middle, nothing deep, 90% was to 2 receivers usually short with yards after catch. I think he will develop into a QB that can spread the ball around much like our last two. Evidently coming out of spring & camp Higgins was closer to being that guy - so he should start next game. If he proves to be the better all around option then we know we have a good #2 & a future possible star. I personally don't think Arkansas played very smart - never rolled up the coverage to take away to short passes thus never forcing Smith to throw it downfield. I think if Higgins doesn't produce Skip will reinsert Smith.
I disagree. Usually you go with a veteran over a promising rookie bc the rookie can be a liability. Except for 1 pass Smith was anything but a liability. If all things are equal, I think you go with the young guy.
Higgins has never shown me anything really. Decent short passing game, okay legs, no deep ball. Smith has a good short game, good legs, and an arm capable of the long ball. Stick with Smith he can be a 4 year starter and a superstar. He can be the future of the program. Don't cut his career a year short bc Higgins didn't transfer.
I'd agree if we had a chance to see Higgins under the lights this year.
Higgins has obviously instilled some confidence in his abilities upon the coaches, and we just haven't seen what they see.... yet.
If he comes out and stinks it up, by all means hook him and start up the J'mar train.
I'm o.k. with starting Higgins next week as long as Smith comes in after the third interception.
Higgins is in a lose/lose at this point. If he comes in and blows the doors off, we are all left to think, "what if he started at Arkansas?" If he comes in and stinks, he gets benched and we all wonder how crazy our coaches could be to think he has what it takes.
This.
Besides the one int., j'mar was smart with his throws. They were where they needed to be or high out of the way so no one could catch it. Remember he had several balls thrown on the numbers that were just dropped. Henderson for a 1st down to MTC was a big one that was dropped.
Higgins throws always miss low. People feet. His balls lack the zip of Smith's. I am sure Holtz will start him out of loyalty. I just at least he doesn't leave him in when things get out of hand.
(Preemptive TWSS)
The diverging opinions on this are fascinating. I'm gonna quit now (for tonight) because it seems like I'm running Ryan down. It really has nothing to do with him.
A young guy came into a tough setting (probably the toughest we'll face) and performed far beyond everyone's expectations. In my book, he's earned the starting spot and should keep it until he loses it on the field.
I tell my son I wish he didn't drink alcohol and especially don't drink and drive... you may kill or injure someone or yourself, and it's possible to totally ruin your career. Higgins may have proven my point by getting a DWI and allowing J'mar to get playing time. He may possibly have lost his starting job.
I think Skip will start Higgins next game and I will support it for the same reasons others have said. Unfortunately, we didn't get the opportunity to see how Higgins would have done against Ark. If coach is correct that Higgins earned the spot (as several on this discussion board agreed Higgins did after watching scrimmages) and if Higgins would have played even better than J'mar, Higgins may well have cost us the game. Obviously we will never really know. I just hope that Skip pulls Higgins from the game if he's not playing well. At a minimum, IF we get a big lead against State I hope Skip get's J'mar back in the game... It will be interesting to see if J'mar can consistently play well.
I glad Higgins didn't injure anyone while driving intoxicated and hope he's learned a life long lesson and will be better for it.
Higgins was our #1 QB coming out of fall practice. He didn't start the game because of off-the-field reasons. So...if Higgins is truly our #1 then Holtz would have gone to him, at least in the 2nd half. Let's see, score is tied at the half. Higgins has served his suspension. At the half you talk to both QBs and to the team as a whole. And say, let's win the 2nd half, and thus the game, and we're putting our #1 QB in the game!!!!!
If this were Tim Rattay, Luke McCown, Colby Cameron, Cody Sokol, Jeff Driskel same situation, do you think Holtz would have hesitated for even one second to insert his true #1 QB into a winnable game like this!???? HELL NO!!!
Here's what I think....which means it's 99.9999% accurate....Holtz made a decision to name Higgins #1 coming out of practice because 1) he's been here 4 years, and 2) he was not yet sold on Smith as a RS freshman. I guarantee Holtz was not (is not) sold on Higgins as our clear #1. ALL THE PROOF ANYONE NEEDS IS HOLTZ NOT PUTTING HIGGINS IN!!!
If Holtz, ANY coach, makes a decision to name a guy #1 QB based on what he has seen, on what he knows, especially based on practice sessions, he has a right to base his new decision based on what he has seen, on what he knows, after an actual game.
That said, I think Holtz will start Higgins this week and give him a chance.
BTW, I'm not too keen on Smith either. I don't think we have a good QB on our roster. It's 2013 all over again....
Several? I remember 1 drop by Henderson. I thought the one incompletion at the goal line to Conner Smith was a bad throw. J'Mar seemed to think so too.
After sleeping on it, I think the offensive game plan was built around J'Mar yesterday.
It looked like he was being protected by the coaches and focused on his primary which was either Henderson, Taylor or a RB most of the day. If that was the game plan, it almost worked. Having a 5th year senior in the game would have opened up the game plan more. Not saying we would have executed, just that it would have been a different game plan.
"If a dog will bite you, he'll bite you when he's young." Skip Holtz
I had to get caught up at the shop so I didn't get to see much of the game.
The only concern I saw with Jmar was locking onto his receiver and staring him down. He looked poised in the game and I liked that.
I say stay with him. If you have to play Higgins give him mop up duty next week
I thought the sport was moving beyond this type of play. Lots of guys involved on this play bunched up, but when the qbs helmet rolls, you should take notice. .
I went back and watched the play. It doesn't appear the chin strap popped, meaning it came off strapped to his head.
Unacceptable
Hell of a game by Smith.
Please stop people. JMar was impressive and has a great looking future. Higgins should and will start the rest of the season but with a very short leash. If Higgins turns the ball over then by all means let's put our season on the shoulders of a red shirt freshman.
I was very impressed with Smith ability to throw the ball and make good decisions. My gut tells me he is the future but it also says you don't sit a senior that had a better spring and fall camps.
The shrewd thing would be to let Higgins "finish up his suspension" in the 1st quarter. Then, bring him in the 2nd quarter and see how both play against SC State.
I think Higgins needs to really finish "learning his lesson" in the 1st quarter while we watch J'Mar some more. haha!
I would expect any of our QB's to perform well against SC State! No way to compare the performances unless Higgins is exceptionally bad.
There is controversy and it started when Holtz didn't pull Smith after the INT.
I was wondering if he was going to put Ryan in then, but my thoughts at the time was that might hurt J'Mars confidence if he pulled him at that point... give him another series to make sure that wasn't a fluke. Turns out, it was a fluke. His only bad decision of the day. If he had come back the next series and made another bad decision, it would have been time for Ryan, imo.
I mentioned earlier that HCSH talked to him on the sidelines and it was obvious he was not going to take him out.
Again, he was not forced to make difficult throws yesterday. He missed a few and hit a few. It was a good effort by a RS freshman against a very good team.
Remember the swing pass to Boston Scott? J'Mar was rushed a bit on that throw, but that's one he needs to complete. Scott might have taken that one to the house. That was a money play for Dixon.
i agree with this. it was a good game plan with a limited playbook and easy reads. j'mar did a great job with it, but he didn't prove that he needs to be the starter unless higgins is still as interception-prone as he used to be.
j'mar had a great game, and like i said, i am comfortable with the ball in his hands. he will be a great one for us. but if the coaches are still convinced that higgins is the guy, then i'm willing to believe them until i see evidence to the contrary.
I'm not so sure about that. Holtz was very smart and intentional about saying Higgins wouldn't start but would be available. He never said 2 quarters, 2 series, till he messes up, etc. That was all contrived by fans and media.
The more I think of it, I think Holtz intended to put Higgins in only for mop up duty or not at all.
Excellent point. Holtz said going into the game that the offense would be simplified for J'Mar so he could do the things he's comfortable doing. Ryan would have ran the whole package. The simplified version was fine though. Haven't seen that kind of tempo (at times) since 2012. I wonder if that's a new wrinkle this year.
I didn't miss Dixon like I thought I would. I think this offense is going to rely much more on the passing than what we saw when Kenneth was here. In other words, I wonder if those who thought the only way Tech can win is with an up-tempo passing attack will be happier this year?
Holtz was not pulling Smith unless injured. Smith played well enough to win and one bad throw doesn't cause Holtz to pull Smith. All you have to do is look at Holtz with Cody in Marshall. If Smith was playing bad, we would have seen Higgns but Smith finishing the game says a lot about what Holtz thinks of Smith.
That dog won't hunt. If we have someone who can open up the playbook and we're up on an SEC team at their place, you put him in!
Smith was adequate and he gave us chances to win along with the defense. Since he is only a red shirt freshman he will grow over the years. We'll see if Higgins has grown. Remember Skip was punishing Higgins. If Smith had not been adequate we would have seen Higgins.
I think you do too. But if J'Mar Smith can't connect on that deep ball going forward, I'd go to Ryan Higgins in a heartbeat.
I'm really tired of seeing LA Tech QB's continuously OVERTHROW the deep ball when our receivers are 3-4 yards behind the opposing DB's. That's just a missed opportunity. Driskel overthrew his receivers on the deep ball all year last year, and J'Mar did it yesterday.
Some posts are too silly to warrant a response.
Higgins paid his penalty by not starting. Once that was done, the better guy should play. If that's Higgins, he should've played.
His staying on the bench tells me all I need to know about who should start next week.
J'Mar was not perfect today, folks. He had several overthrows, including the overthrow on the post pattern that would have been an easy TD for the Dawgs. He also had an interception --because he threw into double coverage-- and he engineered FAR TOO MANY three and outs. Oh....and he did not get the win, which is what a QB is supposed to do.
Some of you nutty fans act like J'Mar was perfect today. He was far from it. He was "okay", and he stayed away from the major mistakes. But J'Mar was NOT great. IMO, he did earn another start, but he better cut done on the overthrows, and NO MORE throws into double coverage.
HCSH has been very, very clear in the media. Higgins wouldn't start at Arkansas and he would not make a mockery of this suspension, but Higgins would be and STILL IS our starter for the rest of the season until HCSH decides otherwise. You may not like coach's decision, or his game plan, or his love of FG attempts,... But he has already been clear on his decision as to who the starting QB will be in the next game.
The suspension is 100% over and Ryan Higgins is our starting QB. Sit back, relax, and enjoy what will be our 3rd consecutive outstanding LA Tech football season.
It's posts like yours Johnny, that I have a real problem with. J'Mar only generated 292 yards of total offense yesterday, and people like you are ready to give him the Heisman Trophy.
That was probably LA Tech's worst offensive output in several years. But for some reason you -and others-- came away thinking J'Mar played great. I guess you just want to overlook all the "3 and outs" that led to Arkansas dominating the time of possession.
You're reading something I've not written. I never said great. I never said Heisman. He's not competing against a great Heisman that nails the long ball either.
My point is simple and has been consistent: if Higgins isn't far enough ahead of Smith to come in after the "paltry" performance you cited, then Smith is our best option and he should start at SCSU and TT.
That's a silly denouement. Let's be clear.....Smith was as one poster cited, "adequate" yesterday. Actually, I personally think he was better than adequate, but he just didn't generate enough offense to beat anyone, much less an SEC team. But J'Mar probably complicated things by playing better in the 1st half (engineered 2 TD's) than he did in the 2nd (0 TD's). Holtz would have looked silly pulling J'Mar in favor of Higgins to start the 3rd qtr, in light of how well J'Mar had played up to that point, and with the game tied. Now.....not so much.
denouemen ...like somebody ever really said that word
Did he play "great" for a 5th year SR, probably not. Did he play "great" for a RS FR seeing his first action ever in an SEC stadium, most would say yes.
I went back and watched it again. He did some truly amazing things I don't think you give him credit for. Like the sack he evaded and then had the smarts to throw it away. Most QB's would have taken the sack but this kid was able to evade (how I don't know) the sack. He did overthrow a wide open deep ball by 5 yards. He overthrew Boston Scott in the flat which would have gone for a chunk. He threw an INT straight to a defender. I'm willing to overlook that in a FR making his first game ever. I saw at least a couple of incompletions that I'm sure was the fault of the WR. There was a route that I know was supposed to be a go route that the wideout stops quickly and turns around to catch, but the wideout kept going. It was in the redzone. He threw it right on the money and had the WR ran the route correctly it was 6.
He throws a very pretty ball and I think he's going to be a very good one for us before it's over. As far as who should start Saturday, I'll leave that up to HCSH and y'all to decide lol
Me thought Smith looked much better than Higgins did his rs freshman year against Kansas. Arkansas is much better than Kansas - returned 10 starts. The players around Smith are much better than those around Higgins at the time.
On Smith's arm, yea he overthrew Carlos but I don't think Higgins has the arm strength to even get it there.
Smith starts by October. I think Holtz knows it.
I agree with everything you just stated. That's why I said J'Mar should probably start the next game too. But he needs to correct the mistakes you just mentioned, and he's simply GOT to generate at least 400 yards of offense per game --and much more against an FCS team like SC St.
J'Mar needed to throw more passes to Taylor & Henderson yesterday. That would have helped open up the ground game more too.
I agree with you. Obviously impressed with Smith BUT he was totally unknown on film. When we line up against Texas Tech their would be plenty of film to take advantage of inexperience. Coach told Dave "Ryan gives us best chance to win "... somehow many BBB posters are under opinion that are SO much smarter than Coach. I am backing Coach 100% do not expect every decision to work out-- If this is right choice we will win a lot of games and hopefully see a lot of Smith in backup role. Holtz should have won over fan base and support--- somehow he is never going to get some folks to trust his experience
Spoke to a player this morning that said the whole team was excited for the way J'Mar played. However, there was not a hint of hesitation in his voice when he said Higgins was the better option and the rest of the team feels the same. Hope they are right.
I don't make the decision, but what I'd like to see Higgins start and Smith get a lot of PT the second half to continue his development (throwing long routes, checking down, ie.)
He needs to be ready, but he's got a while. Where's Coach Mickey?
I actually disagree with you here, Johnny. I think Skip's intention the whole time was to sit Higgins the entire game. He just shrewdly left himself an out in case Smith was injured or performed below standards. That said, I'm on record as saying Smith earned the starting job, and the real punishment for Ryan Higgins' DWI is that he now has the shortest of short leashes because we know there's a capable replacement for him.
This offense has a lot of "choice" routes that are based on the coverage being played by the defense. I wouldn't be so quick to say you know it was supposed to be a go route. Likely, the receiver had the option of a go route or a curl/hitch, depending on the coverage. If the receiver felt like the defender was bailing, he sits down and takes the easy completion. This likely was simply a misread/miscommunication. Who was at fault? I would need to see the film to determine, and I'm sure they will discuss that in the film room. I'm not saying J'Mar was wrong, but the likelihood is that he misread the coverage more than the receiver incorrectly broke off his route.
Okay, I'm ready to see Higgins do his stuff. Enough talk, enough "gonna do this, gonna do that." Just do it!
I think the thing we saw in Smith that we've never witnessed in Higgins was composure. He wasn't rattled. He didn't panic. He played with poise and he played with confidence. I'm sure Higgins was better in practice. I'm sure Higgins has a better grasp of the offense. But Higgins has never demonstrated the game composure we saw in Smith yesterday.
There is a real dilemma here imo. I think Smith is more talented. I imagine he can gain a better grasp of the offense. I suspect his practice performance will improve as he gets more insight. Higgins is not going to become as talented as Smith. He will not discover the arm strength and mobility of Smith. I don't think anybody can argue that Smith has more upside than Higgins.
Higgins earned the starting job. Smith earned the right to contend for the starting job by how he played in the first game. If it were me, I'd give Higgins the first quarter against SC State. But I'd give Smith the second quarter. I would do something similar in the second half. Then, I'd let the guy with the better performance start against Texas Tech.
I think Smith demonstrably earned the right to play in the second game.
In Higgins' defense, you're remembering the "Freshman" Higgins, who was thrown to the wolves in 2013 by Holtz, and played behind one of the worst offensive lines --and on one of the worst offensive teams-- in LA Tech's recent memory. I suspect he has matured a lot as a football player since then, and his "on field" decision making has much improved.
higgins has more arm strength and mobility than you're giving him credit for. the only problem i ever had with him was his tendency to complete just as many passes to the defense as he did to the offense. if he hasn't improved in that department, it should be readily obvious in the first couple of series he plays against real competition. if he can't handle the pressure, we know we've got a very capable backup.
http://www.thenewsstar.com/story/spo...ener/89870886/
"(Smith) got this start because of an opportunity Ryan gave to him. Ryan served his punishment, which was to sit out this game," Holtz said. "When you look at the body of work through spring practice and fall camp, Ryan Higgins will be our starter next week."
I completely agree. The one play by Smith that impressed me the most was when we evaded 2 guys chasing him behind the line and still had the presence of mind to not only throw the ball away, but to put it in the vicinity of a receiver to keep from getting the intentional grounding call. There are many starting QBs in both college and the NFL that won't do that, let alone a redshirt freshman making his first career start on the road against an SEC team. I can confidently say we won't see a play like that from Higgins this year. He'll either fold and take the sack or fling the ball into coverage and risk a pick.
Make no mistake....those SEC refs WANTED badly to call intentional grounding on that play. In fact, they DID call it at first. They were so excited to call "IG" (because Smith was still inside the tackle box), that they never even noticed Trent Taylor standing right under the thrown pass.
