This is embarrassing on national TV. This guys sucks!
I really don't see how we can keep him. He's making a laughingstock out of our defense. Right now this defense looks every bit as bad as our 2012 defense.
This stupid shit face needs to be fired
Hang it up. Skip won't fire this guy unless his own job is in jeopardy. Firing him would be admitting he was wrong, which Skip won't do. He is as hard-headed as Les Miles.
Fk it! Fire that mtker Skip tooo!
I'm sick and tired of this shit show.
Seriously, if we hired a homeless schizophrenic gypsy, could our defense be worse?
Fire him.
Any fool could see that the key to this game was PRESSURE ON THE QB....DUMB ASS BAKER !!!
Do WHATEVER, blitz as many players as it takes to get to that QB.
Yeah, this is unacceptable.
We promoted Blake Baker thinking he would keep Diaz defense going. It's not working. We should part ways with him.
Sorry for the foul language - this is frustrating.
I'm still fuming even half an hour after the game. I may just need to quit watching Tech sports to save my heart.
After listening to Holtz post game, its evident Baker is still the man. The joys of Tech fandom.
Agreed. Baker is not aggressive enough on defense. I know the defense he's running.....it's called the "Flex Defense". It's the same defense that the Dallas Cowboys used to run during their down years. It's supposed to be a classic "bend but don't break" defense......Just horrible.
This thread reads like a ull site. Unacceptable languagr
I think Baker was good as a positions coach. However, he had a DC that coached balls out on almost every down. Not sure how we demote him back to position coaching and get someone else in there as DC. Hope that's possible.
I hate to see anyone get fired. However, this is totally unacceptable. There is no way around it. Something has to be done about this atrocious defense. Maybe demote him, but you can't allow this guy to keep putting this product on the field.
Found it interesting that the game-winning turnover was caused by pressure, especially from Ferguson. Obviously, White and WKU did not expect to see real defense employed at the start of their final drive. Caught White by surprise, and he fumbled.
I'll bet a dollar to a doughnut that WKU's coaches BIGGEST concern, 2 mins left, trailing by 3, at your own 20 was scoring too fast! That's right, WKU figured they would soon lead 59-55 and didn't want to leave Tech's offense too much time. They fully expected to see that stupid prevent defense and WKU planned to take time off the clock and score with maybe 15-20 seconds left. Instead, we put some real pressure on White and got the turnover. I also think that was our ONE shot to save this game. Had White merely been sacked and lost 5 yards, it wouldn't have mattered. WKU would have been alert for pressure on the next play, adjusted, and then gone down to score and win the game.
This is the worst defense I have ever seen at Tech. Worst than 2012, even worst than 1998.
And how about our special teams coordinator?...... Gave WKU really short fields on two of their TD's, and then gave up the blocked punt- that's 21 pts, our special teams gave up.
Don't keep our hope up this year - we will lose big at USM with this D.
So if Holtz is calling the defense, shouldn't we save money and ditch the DC ?
Special teams gave up 21 pts. Decent special teams and it's a blow out. I don't like the soft zone but I think that's what Skip WANTS to play based on comments....
I agree with DFM. We shouldn't lay all the blame on the defense. The short field gave them two easy scores and of course the blocked punt. Making them go the distance (70-80 yds) would have at least given the D a chance for a turnover or at least took up more time.
Going the distance?
WKU scored 28 pts on less than 8 mins TOP in the 2nd half. The TV guys made a great point, it didn't matter if WKU was looking at 40 yards or 80 yards, it would take mere seconds to score. Which is why they advocated for us to go for it on ALL 4th downs, no matter the distance. And the blocked punt drove home that point with emphasis!
obviously our D was bad. but there were two defenses on the field last night, and ours was the better one. we did three things last night a lot worse than our defense. 1. special teams, which was inexcusably bad(except for the long field goal) 2. and short yardage offense. 3. clock management.
they had 52 points. seven on a blocked punt and I think 21 more points on drives less than 50 yards. most defenses would struggle giving an offense like WKU that many short fields. and our D forced two turnovers; their D forced none.
but fire the D coordinator? no way; unless you can get Diaz to leave Miami and come back mid season.
There is no defense for this defense.
Don't try to rationalize their sorry-azz performance(s). Worst Tech defense I can remember.
Just curious...
What was an acceptable number of points for us to have allowed last night? Less than 30?
I hope everyone betted the over...
Our defense is on a two game winning streak. So STTHU you maroons.
I might be wrong, but I don't think we "brought pressure" on the sack fumble. Ferguson was left unblocked and the qb tried to climb the pocket, but there was inside pressure too. It was more a result of a good play by our DL than a result of Baker making a good call.
I saw before the UTEP game the skip said he would be more involved in the defense, but never saw a quote saying he was going to be calling the defensive plays. When did he say that?
Y'all do realize that HCSC is a master delegator. He didn't get to be where he is by being a hands off coach. Just like with his OC he tells them what to run in certain situations. He is making the call on no blitz packages.
That is a HORRIBLE, I mean absolutely horrible defense.
We have no interior D Line, NONE. Every blitz looks delayed. It was hard to watch.
LB's looking in the back field on pass plays instead of picking up the crossing route.
The reaction time of this defense is just off.
We won that game, but nothing to feel good about.
Our offense is our best defense, clock management to keep the other team off the field.
Special teams (21pts) are horrible. Nobody noticed?
Lets say the defense allows 14 of the 21 points that the Special Teams with long drives...
That's still a double digit win -
Special teams were CRAP TASTIC - defense did what it needed to do to get the win -
The difference in this and Middle game? - the offense DID NOT turn the ball over in the red zone and had NO empty trips in the red zone
At Middle that did NOT happen
I noticed. We were terrified when we had to make the last punt. I don't understand how we can be that bad on special teams! OK, let me throw defense in as well- how is this even possible? Didn't Holtz say we had more depth that ever before? I am thinking he was wrong, but if it is true, then this is on coaching. I can't even imagine how awful the rest of the season would have been if we had handed that one to them last night. How many points will we have to score to beat S. Miss?
I know that anytime we brought at least 5 in the pass rush, good things happened. At one point, Santos was on the field in an obvious passing situation. He blitzed, blew up the middle of the pocket, and it ended up being a rushed, incomplete pass. There are two ways to defend, GATA or drop back and cover (which we apparently can't do).

All I know is that several times when our offense was on the field, I saw Baker roaming around by the offense's side of the bench, watching the game. He should've been over with his guys doing what he was hired to do! What's he trying to do, figure out how to stop our offense?
Spangler seemed like a decent coach, as can be exhibited by our exceptional defense in 2011, but it is hard to have a great defense when your offense is receiving the most attention and is off the field so quickly. The up-tempo style hurt him in 2012, along with the loss of some of our 2011 playmakers.
I'm confused. Is it the Butcher or the Baker calling the shots on defense?
I keep having flashbacks to 2012 when winning and losing was matter of the offense scoring more than the defense gave up. A lot of people saying to fire the DC. But who is going to replace him mid-season? What assurances do we have that someone already on our staff can do a better job for at least the remainder of this season? The argument can be made that we have nothing to lose. But do we really? We aren't a P5 program with enough loose changes in the athletic dept's sofa to lure a good, up and coming coach from another program mid-season. Suppose we fire the DC now and the interim or - God forbid - new DC is worse. Our remaining opponents are a combined 9-20. Take out USM's 4-1 record and our remaining opponents are 5-19. It's likely our 'Dogs will be bowl eligible with 3 games remaining on the schedule. ESPN's game predictor has Tech with at 79% to 91% chance of winning all remaining games except USM. And the USM game ESPN has us with a 45% chance of winning. We're reasonably looking at an 8-4 or 9-3 regular season and a third straight bowl appearance. At this point, stay the course BUT start looking in earnest NOW for a replacement.
Agree completely. When your offense can score as fast as ours, you need a lot of depth on defense so your best players aren't worn out by the end of the game. I love the big plays our offense makes. Watching Henderson smoke the DBs and Taylor cockroach his way through defenders for long gains/TDs is thrilling. But the defense needs some time to catch its breath and that requires a lot of depth so there isn't a big drop-off when key defenders aren't on the field.
Very few people are willing to acknowledge what you and Bearpaw are pointing out. It happens to almost every team that runs that type offense. Tried to explain that back in the Crowton days (all horrible defenses), in 2012 when our COY from 2011 was getting blasted, and now. It's easier to just say fire the DC!
On one of the WKU fan forum's one guy posted:
Tech should fire their DC
Well, there ya go, an unbiased opinion based on observation.
There were a couple years every one thought Spangler was great. Maybe we just didn't have many good athletes on defense in 2012 and the last couple years. Maybe Bill Arnsparger could figure out how to get better results out of players with limited ability. This is just a thought - I am not claiming to be correct. It is a possibility, however.
Yeah, I noticed. Coupled with the field position enjoyed by WKU may indicate our defense didn't play as poorly as many think. We are currently in the hunt and have an appearance in the CCG in our court. Many wouldn't have expected that. I'm not one to typically remind anyone, but earlier in the week I posted that we would win the game. I am glad we did. I think our team is improving each game and should that trend continue we will be in good shape. Someone posted the offensive stats of our remaining games and it indicates that it could bode well for our defense. If so, the showdown will come in Hattiesburg, which we all hoped for.
So if the up-tempo offense being the issue is to be blamed, you could reasonably assume our defense should start out doing great and begin to falter as the game goes on. Is that what y'all are seeing? I can't tell any difference from the first play of the game on defense to any other play on defense. Maybe my TV's not high def enough
in context it was about firing their DC and saying we should also... remember-- their defense gave up 10 points more and we got 2 turnovers. We also put d in hole several times--- our d outplayed WK and like most fans we went int that damn prevent and gave up 14 pts plus the 7 on blocked punt in 4th -- up til prevent I was ok with the d
Obviously, our defense needs to get in a few extra reps flipping tires down the field. If extra energy is what they need, then Hester should make it happen.
If the up tempo offense was the problem then the slow down in the late 3rd and 4th quarters should have given the defense a little breather. Of course it wouldn't with three and outs. However some of those three and outs were as long as some of our offensive drives for TD's.
'
From what I've heard, he may have a medical waiver for this year, or redshirt (already missed half the season). He'll have 3 years of eligibility left if he doesn't play our last six games.
Only games we should need him would be USM, CUSACG, & Bowl game. But we would help anchor down our currently undersized center of the DLine (he's 310+ lbs, rest are below 300Lb's)
TOP for the game was LT- 32:48, WKU- 27:12.
Look guys, we are ranked # 126/128 in total defense. That's with us playing UTEP and SCST as 2 of our games. Let that sink in for a minute. We are 2 spots ahead of Rice who is dead last. Maybe the defense is bad because of the offense, the moons gravitational pull or whatever, but being nearly dead last shouldn't be acceptable for Louisiana Tech.
We've also played Texas Tech, WKU, and MTSU, good offenses. HOPEFULLY we would improve to the 80s-90s by the time of the USM game (... not holding my breath, Ill wait til I see it).
TOP is a meaningless stat for game outcome. Just look at the WKU-Houston Baptist game. WKU won 50-3. TOP was WKU 15 and change, HBU almost 45 minutes.
