I'm excited for this game just to see how our defense does lol. Can we finally take down the triple option, or get absolutely destroyed.
-
Re: Armed Forces Bowl It Is
Wonderful news!
I'll try to give some where to eat/what to do/where to park advice tomorrow.

Re: Armed Forces Bowl It Is
Navy is the 3rd best rushing team in the FBS football,
# 1 in 3rd down conversion,
# 1 in fewest penalties,
# 1 in fewest penalty yards,
# 7 in passing efficiency,
#18 in scoring offense,
#35 in total offense.
Defensively they are #123 in pass eff defense.

What's the day/date/time for this game?
-
Re: Armed Forces Bowl It Is
Better matchup but worse day (at least for me) than HOD. Go dawgs!
-
Re: Armed Forces Bowl It Is
We definitely drew a much better team than WKU. See where USM got ULahLah in New Orleans, UTSA is in the New Mexico Bowl.

Re: Armed Forces Bowl It Is
So our defense will need to be sure tacklers with discipline.
:((
-
Re: Armed Forces Bowl It Is
We have never matched up well against Navy. With how pathetic our run defense has been against one running back options and the absense of two linebackers I can only imagine the yards we will bleed against Navy's triple option.
We CAN BEAT them but we will have to score on most of our possessions bcuz time of possession is likely going to be lopsided.

Re: Armed Forces Bowl It Is
This is still up on the LMAFB website. Maybe it's a premonition!
"The 2016 Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl will feature the Big 12 Conference, facing off against the U.S. Naval Academy."

Re: Armed Forces Bowl It Is
I like that it's a different and good bowl.
Tech's now played bowl games in: S'port, Dallas, Fort Worth, New Orleans, San Diego and Boise. That's not a bad list.
Much rather Tech experience many different bowl environments than going to the same one every year, i.e. the Leopards.
-
Re: Armed Forces Bowl It Is
I love the match up and location!

Re: Armed Forces Bowl It Is
Dec 23 (Friday) 3:30 at TCU's stadium, I think.
Navy will roll us. We have no defense. They will be able to name their score.
But, as painful as it'll be, I am planning to be there.

May be shoot out. Dogswin didn't post their defensive stats.

Re: Armed Forces Bowl It Is
Navy is ranked 25th in the CFP poll. This is very very good for us. The first time Tech has played a ranked team in a bowl game, correct?

Isn't their QB lost for the game with an injury?

Is the the first time that Tech has played a ranked opponent is a bowl game?

Re: Armed Forces Bowl It Is
Anyone know if alumni association or one of those other groups like nwtag are interested in renting out a bery nearby parking lot?
If so send me a PM. My church usually sells parking for TCU games. Hard to staff a weekday bowl game, so we'd love to pre-sell if we can.
If we don't pre-sell the whole lot, it's a good location. Usually not cheap (I'll find out details tonight) but you can't get very much closer.

Yes, Navy QB Will Worth is out for the season. Definitely affected their performance vs. Temple. Will be interesting to see how his back-up does vs. Army. I'm sure, whoever it is, with one game under his belt as a starter, that'll be enough experience to whip Baker's pitiful defense.

Re: Armed Forces Bowl It Is
How great would this matchup have been last season with Dixon and Reynolds battling it out for the TD record!??
What a great way to end our season! Top 25 opponent, drivable distance, holiday weekend.. see y'all in Ft. Worth! HBTD!!!
-
Re: Armed Forces Bowl It Is
We lost in 2009 32-14 at Navy. That was during a 4-8 season under Dooley.
We lost in 2010 37-23 in Ruston (to Navy). That was Dykes' first year, we were 5-7.
So...we have a winning record for the first time as we play Navy. So...who knows?

Re: Armed Forces Bowl It Is
More...those Navy teams were under their current coach Ken Niam....tolo? They were 10-4 in 2009 and 9-4 in 2010. Beat Notre Dame both years. Beat Mizzou in a bowl game. So, good Navy teams beating not-so-good Tech teams. Hmmm...

Navy will kick our ass. Baker isn't up to the task of being a DC at this level. We absolutely must reassign him at the end of this season and go out and find a proven, seasoned DC somewhere.

They lost yesterday so they may fall out. I doubt beating Army will put them back in, but it might.

It's different. We've been in the old Cotton Bowl Stadium twice. I like Ft. Worth better than Dallas. Basically the same set up (same committee I believe) for both bowls.
-
Re: Armed Forces Bowl It Is
Passing defense sucks, but rushing defense is ok as long as the other team is:
A) not holding our players or
B) is being called on holding our players
Neither of which happened yesterday
-
Re: Armed Forces Bowl It Is
Which team is home and which is visitor?
For the 2016 bowl game, the U.S. Naval Academy is the home team and Louisiana Tech is the visiting team.
Are any team events open to the public?
The Kickoff Luncheon (Omni Hotel), Pep Rally (Tailgate Outpost), Tailgate Outpost and Pre & Post-Game Concerts are open to the public. Check out our Bowl Events page throughout the fall for exact times and dates.
What are the team hotels?
Official team hotels are the Omni Fort Worth Hotel (U.S. Naval Academy) and the Renaissance Worthington Hotel (Louisiana Tech).

Seriously, it's a reasonable distance, a bowl Tech hasn't already been to, against a ranked (or recently ranked) opponent and basically on a weekend. Sounds good to me.
-
Re: Armed Forces Bowl It Is
I think this year, Heart of Dallas & Armed Forces are about equal - you'd play Navy or Army. Both Higher Profile teams than MAC or SBC.
Armed Forces is good because it's on Friday before Christmas at 3:30 p.m.- a lot of us can get off work (or beg off work) and drive over and back on the same day.
Heart of Dallas is Tuesday after Christmas, which might be easier to get off work, but it's at 11 a.m., so most of us would have to get a hotel for Monday night.
It's weird that they went with a rematch in the Army-UNT: North Texas and Army have already played once this season. The Mean Green won 35-18 on Oct. 22 at West Point.

I agree the rematch thing is odd and I know comparing scores is dangerous, but the Dawgs beat a team 45-24 that beat Army 35-18. Don't know that HOD would want to have to market a Tech-Army matchup.

For you first timers, Ft Worth is a GREAT little town too. And it is much smaller than Dallas. Unlike when you visit Dallas, you should try to stay DOWNTOWN in one of Ft Worth's downtown hotels near Sundance Square. Downtown Ft Worth is great, and has a lot of restaurants, bars, etc...
Check out this link.

IMO, this Ft Worth experience will be much better for our fans than the HOD experience. It's a much smaller environment, so you are much more likely to see your friends and fellow LA Tech fans in downtown Ft Worth. And the TCU stadium is not in a ghetto.
Next to New Orleans, this is as good as it gets for Louisiana fans.

How far is Sundance Square from the Stockyards? Last time I was in Fort Worth I watched a minor league ball game at LaGrave Field then saw Delbert McClinton's son, Clay, play at the White Elephant Saloon.

Re: Armed Forces Bowl It Is
This game is one year too late. Think of the players competing for the career touchdown record in their last college game against each other.

No one should have much to complain about as far as the bowl game goes. It's in the location that the majority wanted and against a top 25 team. Kudos to whomever made that happen.

My thoughts as well. I was also wondering if the hotel will be doing a fan discount at the team hotel like the one in New Orleans last year.

Since all payouts go to the conference for distribution to the schools, it is to the benefit of everyone to get as many schools drawing payouts as possible.

Not complaining, just curious.
The AF and HOD Bowls are operated by the same committee. Both bowls were gonna get stuck with crappy match-ups because the Big 12 couldn't fill their spot in AF, and the Big Ten couldn't fill their spot in HOD. That meant they were both going to get stuck with bowl ineligible teams: Army and North Texas. (Army has 2 FCS wins, 1 of which doesn't count.) Instead of having 2 division champs facing off against 2 ineligible teams, they moved Tech over to AF to play Navy. That way they'd have 1 really good matchup and 1 really crappy rematch instead of 2 really bad matchups.
-
Re: Armed Forces Bowl It Is
I think this is awesome. A Top 25 military academy from the AAC in a bowl we've never been to in Fort Worth. It couldn't have worked out better for us. Now we have 3 weeks to get healthy and figure out how to defend the triple option. Go Dawgs!

Thanks for a great explanation. I was curious too.
I hate it but there's no way Mrs TD & I can make the game. Had been planning to spend 3 or 4 days in the DFW area around the HOD bowl but that's the breaks. The AF bowl with Navy is a better bowl situation than HOD so I'm glad for the team. Still hate to break our string of bowl trips.

Kind of worked out the opposite for me. I will be two hours away for the AF bowl, but I will be back in New Orleans for the HOD. Could have flown in by myself, but I would have been in the dog house with the family.

Tier 3: Good football … but not great
Armed Forces Bowl: 8-5 La Tech vs. 9-3 Navy
This game would have been in a higher tier if Navy QB Will Worth hadn't been lost for the season against Temple. Worth was the Midshipmen's top passer and rusher, and he's an integral cog in Navy's triple option offense. We'll get a chance to see Navy play Army before the bowl game, but things seem a bit one-sided with La Tech having QB Ryan Higgans' 4,208 yards and 37 touchdowns available for this game.
