New Gannett "beat writer" for Tech/Grambling/HS
After Gannett tortured Louisiana Tech fans with 3 consecutive LSU fans covering Tech sports part-time, the good news is we no longer have an LSU fan on the job: https://twitter.com/CoryDiaz_TNS
However, the big disappointment is Gannett is still treating Tech like we aren't a major college by splitting our beat with Grambling. I hope Cory doesn't turn it into the Grambling/SWAC beat like Isabella did. Tech is the only FBS school Louisiana Gannett doesn't cover like an FBS school. LSU has a full-time beat. ULL has a full-time beat. ULM has a full-time beat. But Gannett splits coverage between the second best program in the state (Tech) with an FCS athletic program that is DI in name only (Grambling).
Please let Gannett know it is unacceptable for them to split Tech's coverage with Grambling, and they should treat Tech just like they do LSU and the ULX twins:
Scott Ferrell, Sports Planning Editor, sferrell@gannett.com
Judi Terzotis, President, jterzotis@theadvertiser.com
Jeff Gauger, Executive Editor, jgauger@gannett.com
Barbara Leader, Editor, bleader@gannett.com
Let's hope Cory is a lot better than the last 3 LSU fans covering Tech and as good or better than Ethan Conley. It's been a while since we've had somebody covering Tech as good as Ethan.

Isabella covered Tech? Must have accidentally passed through Ruston on his way to Grambling.

This is a conversation our AD should have had with all these people before this change in personnel. And our president since our AD didn't get the job done.

Anyone wonder whether the ULX twins pay for the publicity?

Lafayette is the only game in town besides lsu.
nlulm doesn't really get much coverage unless they are trying to play MeTooU with us.
It's silly to continue our business relationship with Gannett/TNS, but I bet we keep sucking up to them.

It really isnt fair from an objective standpoint.
ULM is a dumpster fire.
ULL is a dumpster fire but the dumpster has gold-colored paint on it.
Tulane isn't a dumpster fire but is in a conference with moderately high expectations and an almost impossible recruiting area. This is the only other one that deserves consideration just because of the university itself.
Tech is in a great recruiting area, is in an easy conference with some other good teams (easy to go .500), has a long, long history of extended success, it's very easy to win here, etc.
-
Re: New Gannett "beat writer" for Tech/Grambling/HS
I don't believe that Tech has a long, long history of extended success. Way back in the 70s we had great teams for the division we were in. In the 90s we had a couple of good seasons including beating Alabama twice (but losing to an actual underdog USC). After winning the WAC we bombed for a few years to have one good fair year (8-4) under DD and two good years under Dykes. So now we have three bowl wins in a row (but that's not a long, long history). We have a history of ups and downs and right now we are doing well so we should be the best G5 team in the state. But if we lose HCSH we might plummet again for a couple of years. Our all time record according to Wikipedia (updated?) is 604 wins versus 451 losses. Thats only a 57 % winning record. But let's keep on improving.

Down years tied directly to Dan Reneau.

Compared to those other 3 schools, our down years would be considered successes for them.

We were in the 1AA Championship Game in the '80s (1984?). I think we have won 25 conference championships in FB. We were in 2 bowl games our first time in the highest college football division. I think we have an overall winning record since returning to what is now the FBS. That is pretty good, especially considering we had to start as an independent. It was a lot tougher to become D1A when Tech did as opposed to becoming FBS today.
-
Re: New Gannett "beat writer" for Tech/Grambling/HS
57% is fine. 73% is about the highest and 24% the lowest. Much variation in the amount of games played. Some higher percentages havent been around as long.
-
Re: New Gannett "beat writer" for Tech/Grambling/HS
By my count we are 174-192 since returning to IA in 1988. There were quite a few down years under JR Peace (six losing seasons) and JBIII (four losing seasons) and two out of three with DD. My argument is that until recently we have pretty much been mediocre. Everyone remembers the golden years in the 70s but our record pretty much follows my experience while in school - two winning seasons and two losing seasons including a one win year). Now from 1940 until 1966 (Joe Aillet) we only had four losing seasons.
Now we are head and shoulders over the other G5 schools, but it hasn't always been that way.

The NewsStar now has a self imposed deadline of 7PM. Therefore any athletic event that ends after that time will not be covered in the printed edition the following day. So does it really matter how or who covers Tech? If you are counting on print instead of digital you will get stale news most of the time. If you prefer digital coverage there are other choices.
I personally got fed up with The NewsStar and its owner Gannett about this and most everything about their USA Today philosophy. I cancelled my subscription after 17 years. For all of my adult life I have always had a daily paper delivered to my house wherever I have lived--no more. I refuse to financially support their current incompetence and liberal political bias.
I hope that enough other readers do likewise and perhaps we can force a change for the better.

Just think. This fall we won't be able to wake up and read about the Friday night high school football games on Saturday, the Saturday night college football games on Sunday morning. I don't believe their will be full length stories on line about the big games or recaps on the less important games.

FWIW, TNS has not reported on area high school teams (outside of WM or Neville) in the Saturday dead tree addition in many years. They do a horrible job of high school coverage in the online edition. Sunday coverage of local college football has not been consistent in years either. Bottom line: TNS and Gannett in general is made up of lazy liberals who are horrible business peeps.

Probably not. I have never paid for the Times on line edition. Every now and then I get a reminder that the free subscripton will expire. Just like an old fart I really only look at the front page and read the obits. Reading the obits doesn't seem to count toward the number of free stories.

Re: New Gannett "beat writer" for Tech/Grambling/HS
Not impressed by our new News Star beat writer's initial articles.
"Although the media sees a rematch for the conference championship, picking Louisiana Tech to win the West division and WKU to take the East, the three new coaching hires in Kiffin, Butch Davis at FIU and Mike Sanford with the Hilltoppers provides the upcoming season a lot of intrigue and all the collective strength for the deepest conference battle royale.
A certain perception follows programs that compete on the Group of Five level in college football. But athletic directors around Conference USA have made it known to the rest of the country that it’s as serious as ever to win."
Just seems unpolished.

He is unpolished. He just graduated from college. When I look back on some of my early writing, I just cringe. Thankfully, I had some good mentors to help bring me along. That's critical. Unfortunately in Gannett world these days, those mentors are long gone. It's become sink or swim. Hopefully, Cory can swim.

So . . . yes . . . we are stuck with him. Too bad they couldn't offer a transfer to someone like this: http://www.knoxtntoday.com/big-mike-is-moving-on/
Of course after you read what he was offered at his Gannettzoid newspaper you'd know why he retired.:
From Knoxville:
"Mike Strange has chosen retirement from the News Sentinel over a demotion cooked up by the foreign ownership group, Gannett.
“My role was being redefined as a non-columnist, helping out on football and being responsible for men’s hoops. I told them that 67 is too old to go back to being a beat writer.
“Their idea of helping out on football is shooting video, doing Facebook Live segments and, by the way, writing a little bit. The game story is going away and that is something I always put great stock in doing.”

Today's Times: NWST is the sports front feature, LSU sidebar, that Grambling article below the fold...
Tech is nowhere to be found in The Times since last THURSDAY after the media tour of the press box except for a little ad Tech took out on Sunday. Not a single Tech article or even press release has been published in The Times in the last 5 days as if Tech isn't even having a fall camp!
There are multiple articles about each of LSU, NWST, and Grambling over that time period.
I'm with Pawdawg on this now. Time to cut all ties to Gannett. Our coverage is worse than pathetic. It's insulting.

Re: New Gannett "beat writer" for Tech/Grambling/HS
I found this online from two days ago:
http://www.shreveporttimes.com/story...eel/524213001/
But I've quit going to their website because I don't think we're getting a fair shake from them. Personally I think we are about to begin an extraordinarily good season. So they may (MAY) jump on the bandwagon as things start to evolve. If they ever give Tech the coverage they ought to, I would reconsider subscribing online. But there's going to have to be consistency.

That online article was never published in the newspaper. It was also a hard to find online because it was not published online on The Times' "Right Now" sidebar, which is the easiest place to find news.
That TNS article was just linked to The Times' headlines section as you can see the URL is the same as TNS except for the domain name. Whenever they do that, the article rarely if ever is published on the "Right Now" sidebar with all the news. The good news is that when they do that, Ferrell/Lang do not butcher the article.
And our Gannett coverage did not change for the better when we made the Top 25 run in 2012. I've never seen any evidence that these Gannett hacks will ever jump on the Tech bandwagon.

Re: New Gannett "beat writer" for Tech/Grambling/HS
As it stands right now, Gannett sucks as far as I'm concerned.
-
Re: New Gannett "beat writer" for Tech/Grambling/HS
Stop buying the paper. Stop paying for subscriptions. If you advertise with them, stop advertising in the paper. And for goodness sakes STOP linking the paper. They are getting your clicks (ad money) because you go to see what they wrote or didn't write. If you have to link them to talk about how bad they are at least use a do not track proxy first.
Money is the only thing that works with Gannett.

Haha. I'm a dead-tree guy myself, but this move away from the daily paper has nothing to do with saving the planet. It has everything to do with saving a few dollars. Printing a newspaper is costly. VERY costly. I was shocked how expensive it is. Gannett has been incredibly short-sighted and made some absolutely maddening, bone-headed decisions in the name of saving a few bucks (and ultimately losing a whole lot more in the long run).

We should be using Bastrop, Ruston, along with other small daily and weekly papers like The Ouachita Citizen instead of TNS. We'd get MUCH better coverage.

Ouachita Citizen came in mail today. It had the first printed camp story of the week. A weekly beat a daily newspaper. . . .

Jerry Byrd's magazine published only 5 times a year also beat the daily Times... http://footballcountrymag.com/skip-h...pen-2017-camp/

Now I'm thinking the fix is really in.
Louisiana Tech football Held Hostage - Day 3
3-4 paragraphs today at the end of a Scott Ferrell story about NCAA's elimination of 2-a-day workouts. Skip quotes came from a press release prior to opening practice.
Disappointed!
If Gannett is going to print a newspaper while forcing everyone to also go to their websites, then space allocation should be firm and fair.

We better hope J'Mar Smith can stay healthy for 13 regular season games (including CUSA CG). Elijah Walker will be a true freshman, and Westin Elliot threw more interceptions than TD passes last year at a community college. I would say we are woefully unprepared at backup QB.

Kinda makes you wonder why we spent $20M on a new "pressbox". We apparently have no press.
Some things never change. North Louisiana continues to be its' own worst enemy. :icon_roll:

Let's hope this doesn't turn out to be like Rush Limbaugh during the Clinton administration.

Please contact the news star sport department online to ask about coverage like I did this morning. Just a few inquiries might make a huge difference.

Re: New Gannett "beat writer" for Tech/Grambling/HS
Tech Hostage Day 7 for The Times. That's a full week without a single Tech article in the Shreveport Gannett paper.
More LSU and NWST today.
But Tech's SID shares half of the blame because all they've written is 1 press release on the team this past week.

Do you think it is like the question of "is it the chicken or the egg"? Would Gannett include us more if we had more press releases?

That's what most of the NWST articles in The Times are like today's was... an article written by NWST's SID. The Times can't print a Tech press release if Tech doesn't send them one to print (by their 7 PM deadline :rolleyes4:).
However, Tech deserves better treatment than that. Between the two North Louisiana Gannett newspapers, Tech should have a full-time beat writer publishing at least one article per day.

If that's the case, then we should both be complaining directly to Gannett, and our SID...

Did the NWState articles have any news on the Bulldogs? Sure would love to find something out on Fall Camp here!

Hostage Update: Day 8 without a single Tech article in The Times.
And more LSU and NWST articles in today's paper...

Re: New Gannett "beat writer" for Tech/Grambling/HS
we've been all hands on deck on our massive annual high school preview book.
Funny...Translation: We've been busy securing ads from local car dealers, banks, and injury attorneys to pay for the high school preview "book".

Re: New Gannett "beat writer" for Tech/Grambling/HS
Our SID is working on updating the roster. It should be updated in 3 more weeks, and then we'll get an article about the team.
-
Re: New Gannett "beat writer" for Tech/Grambling/HS
I know the Gannett papers are giving us very little coverage, but have you looked at the Official Athletic Web Site recently. There are no news worthy articles there that have not bee in the papers (at least the digital issue), so why should the Times/Morning News have any?
I could say the same for the Official Tech Web Site. There hasn't been a new article there for months.
-
Re: New Gannett "beat writer" for Tech/Grambling/HS
I don't know why we do this to ourselves.

That's not true. I've told you the our COYHCSH is holding up the release of the roster. Send him an email. He won't lie about it.

Would you please repost his reasoning in not releasing it?

So you're saying we're not going to get an updated roster? I emailed our AD 2 years ago and it was updated the next day. I'm just going to see how long it takes them to get it done this time. I bet it doesn't get done before the first game.

I'm not really sure why Skip needs to be in charge of this thing. I'd believe Hester could easily update the heights and weights. Should we assume Skip told Hester not to both, Hester is "busy", or our SID is too lazy?

Hester is not the operations manager. When COYHCSH tells him to release it he will.

I'm sure the Times will want press passes to the MS State game.
Just say no.

Ask if he has written and published a single word about TECH this year? If the answer is no, then no pass.

Looking at the Shreve-Times twitter acct, the only thing they love tweeting about is LSU regarding college sports.

Re: New Gannett "beat writer" for Tech/Grambling/HS
Any talk on S'Port radio?
We have Dietrich talking us up over here. He shows some love to nlulm and that's understandable, but he limits his lsu talk.
Gannett is HORRIBLE. Please stop the "In Kind" trade out with them. We don't need them!
-
Re: New Gannett "beat writer" for Tech/Grambling/HS
100.7 The Ticket with Ben Mintz is pretty good about info on Tech. They have Bleed Tech Blue, and a couple others on at least once a week to talk Tech as well as regular promos for carrying the games during the season. You should listen if you get a chance.

Ben has been good to us from what I've heard of him. Glad he gives us some love in S'Port.
How 'bout Fletcher?

He had a great interview with Luke recently, but other than that, the Fletcher Show doesn't talk Tech anymore. They claim to be LSU's flagship station. Ever since NWST started sponsoring the show, Tech talk has been slim to none.
JJ and Bonzai hate LSU, but they don't talk Tech either.

I always figured he was a turd just like Ferrell and Lang.

Ben mintz does a great job giving tech tons of love on the air. He has become a Tech fan himself.
