That's it.
Sad-Western Kentucky has to be happy
A bit embarrassing on a national stage
No other options. We're screwed this year. Maybe we can get a new DC after a 3-9 season.
I feel sure we can beat Rice and UTEP
Not sure D C is the problem, turn overs!!!!!
That my friends is a whoppin''
3rd and 93
Agreed my friend
We had no answers tonight-it was awful. Is Elliott worse?
At this point I wouldn't be against trying anybody else, even though I don't think it will prove productive. What do I know? I thought he would be A LOT farther along as a QB than he is. After a game like that, it's hard to even know where to start.
Pretty silly for our backup QBs to have transferred.
What a stinker of a game.
Before everyone bashes J’Mar, I want to ask one question...
Did anyone see a single designed play called to utilize J’Mar’s running ability?
I saw a few busted plays, scrambles, but nothing designed as a QB run.
Our HC has taken a mobile QB and turned him into a pocket passer.
Hell he looks like he is scared to run. May be because of his propensity to fumble the freakin football. 3 in 2 games and another bobble while running tonight that was almost a fourth. He runs the spread offense, every play is designed as a possible qb run depending on what he sees from the defense. Many chances to pull and go but he didn't.
I don't believe there's a QB in the country that can be successful with 1 second before you're running for your life like JMar was tonight. Not to mention that was maybe the best coverage we'll see this year. I would also like to see him take off more.
J'Mar is a turnover machine. We have no quarterback. Sad situation.
Classic overreacting here. J'Mar is a sophomore with a Swiss cheese OL. That's the best defensive front we'll face all year.
Yes, it was ugly. Yes, it was about as bad as I've seen in Ruston. Yes, it was the best team we'll play all year.
Let's see what happens next week.
Agreed. JMar is not at the same level yet as our last 3 qbs. He's closer to where Higgins was before he sat, learned & improved THEREFORE until he improves as a passer Holyz needs to maximize his current strength - his legs. More true option aloowing him to run more much like MSU uses Fitzgerald- of course he has to protect the ball and can't keep fumbling. Holtz throughout camp always said he's gonna be (future tense) a rockstar. He knew he wasn't there yet. I think most of us made our assumptions based on a one game performance in which he had two NFL receivers that one of the two was likely open on every passing play. All JMar had to do was get the ball to them. Now he's forced to go through his progressions and that's obviously a work in progress. But in all fairness our receivers were shutdown tonight & our O line only pass protected well for one quarter
This team has more problems than just at QB - I think offensively it's several issues starting with our piss poor running game that would really help our passing game. We ran the ball much better in the 2nd half in both games. Tonight just too little too late.
Defensively - it was good to see some good LB play tonight
MSU had some quality LBs
Ours are all 5'9" and can't see over the line of scrimmage
We will get better.
Our backup QB scored more points (1 TD) than our starting QB. Until our starting QB can STOP GIVING THE FOOTBALL TO THE OTHER TEAM we are going to suffer offensively.
Our OL is underperforming, but they had nothing to do with J'Mar scrambling and then trying to set and throw a 60 yard bomb pass. Are you kidding me!!! RUN THE FRIGGIN FOOTBALL OR GET RID OF IT QUICKLY!!!
:furious3:
J'Mar's QBR tonight was 2.8, the lowest I remember ever seeing. That's piss poor, at best.
Smith is a turnover machine. And, he not only has TOs but they are KILLER TOs! And, tonite, you can add his fumble that resulted in the 87 yard loss as a TO too.
I know you can't truly evaluate a game like this, but I'm gonna do it anyway to illustrate a point. Smith had 3 TO's that led to 20 pts for them, and combined with that loooong fumble, took away 4 scoring opportunities for us. So, if you apply a conservative assumption that we get 4 FGs on the ops, instead of zero points, then:
Miss State 57 - 20 = 37
Dawgs 21 + 12 = 33
A game that close becomes a one-play-away-game-changer! Who knows what happens in a close game like that?
Now, it is true we scored 6 pts after our INT return, so maybe you change the score to 37-27 them. Still, a competitive game. Smith's bumbling, stumbling turnovers turned what should have been a close, competitive game into a blowout. Of course we've seen this before. Like that USM game when we had SEVEN frickin' TOs!
Now...to be fair. Smith has had three starts: vs. two SEC opponents(0-2) and one not-so-good FCS (lost to a SWAC team) opponent. Perhaps we'll see some "normalcy" when we get a steady diet of mediocre CUSA opponents, and Smith has a chance to settle in and grow into the position. Okay. But right now, because of what the problem is, it looks fairly bleak. Has the makings of 2013 again.
The only analysis really necessary is whether this was a game with high expectations. If that's the case, Tech turns into a junior high girls soccer team instead of a Division 1 football team of grown men.
J has tremendous upside. Hopefully we will see a steady trend upwards in performance level from him from here on out. I still believe he will eventually become a really good QB in time, but he isn't anywhere close to that now.
Like a loan officer at one of the banks I do business says, "A giraffe never changes its spots". We will see.
Amen! I'm sick of hearing the reason J'Mar played bad was because of the OL. He holds onto the ball way to long and fumbles way to much. He's indecisive on when he should run or throw. Play calling on offense has been more of a detriment to J'Mar then the OL playing bad. From what I can remember we had some success with slants across the middle early on. Why did we go away from that?
Hard to sugarcoat that performance tonight. It will go down in history as one of the worst for a Tech QB. Having said that, Higgins and Cameron looked bad their first years to play, and they turned out to be good QBs. I think J has more potential than either of them. However, if he doesn't stop turning the ball over and quick he needs to be benched.
Nobody is happy in Bowling Green right now after WKU laid a 20-7 egg at Illinois when the Illini only beat Ball State 24-21. Probably not the worst time to be catching the Hilltoppers.
Smith's passing efficiency rating was an average 136.5 against NSU. It was a bad 85.9 against Mississippi State. This is the official NCAA stat. ESPN's QBR is click bait and will never be an official stat.
...and he telegraphs his throws. Announcers were pointing that out.
Give me a break guys....we were outclassed at every position. I would be interested to hear from the board if there was a particular position where someone thought we had an advantage. Our WR's were much smaller and slower than the opposing secondary, and both lines were significantly smaller.
J'mar is, and will continue to be just fine. He is a sophomore, with limited game experience. The goal is to win the conference, and nothing that happened last night has any influence over that.
Plan your dive, and dive your plan. J'mar is our guy.
Thank you Lord for blessing Louisiana Tech for the last three seasons with an experienced quarterback... I guess the jig us up.
Please be with Tim Rattay (one of your best blessings ever) in the immediate future as we know that only he can teach the skills needed to prevent another embarrassing event such as we endured last night.
Amen
We saw lots of turnovers-balls held to long, and a not ready for public viewing team. The QB position should be open at this point for sure-he did nothing to hold his rank as starter. Is that the coach-maybe, but he wasn't the one with the turnovers and poor decisions.
How many of our last three fifth-year senior quarterbacks had above average seasons in their sophomore years?
J'Mar Smith has got to be leading the nation in fumbles by a QB through the first two games and it is killing our football team. All the 'potential' in the world is worthless if he cannot protect the friggin football. His job is to produce points for our team, not the opponent.
"What bothers me is not the interceptions, what bothers me are the fumbles. The fumbles are things we've talked about and if you can't protect the football, then you can't play," Holtz said. "We cannot win turning the ball over. In two games, he had a couple of turnovers last week, he had a couple of turnovers tonight. It's just playing in the offense mentally and protecting the football."
Relinquishing 27 points off turnovers is tough to overcome and against an SEC team makes the hill that much steeper.
This thread has the same title as one last year except substitute Higgins. No, not year before last or when Higgins was a RS freshman, but last year before he was all conference etc. We will be all right. MSU has a very good team and in two years when we go to Starkville Smith will be a senior.
Too many bubble screens. Felt like Jack Bicknell was calling the plays out there. We rarely threw the intermediate rout. When we did we were successful with it. I guess some of that could be contributed to the o line not holding up.
@JuBru
Neither of our backs has the measurables or put up the stats that their RB (#22) put up.
Thank goodness CUSA appears to be very, very weak this year......we may have a chance!
This season has now landed squarely on the shoulders of Mr. Blake Baker - if he can't get things locked down on D while our QB and Oline are developing, it will be a long year. Maybe CUSA is weak enough to give us a legit shot at a 4th bowl game....just maybe.
The days of us outscoring CUSA teams 48-37 are over though....we gotta have a more aggressive, attacking defense.
Our offense is broken. We are back to the drag it out playcalling finally signaling the play in with ~10 seconds until the play clock expires. This is likely adding to J'Mar's confusion on the field as it is becoming a Chinese fire drill to get the play off in time.
Also, MS State's defensive coaches were drawing up our plays on whiteboards on the sidelines. By the 3rd Qtr they were bored and yawning. But hey, it isn't hard to draw up "run up the middle", "run up the middle", "fumble".
Y'all, I think we're going to be ok. The long fumble to set-up 3-93 I would blame more on the center (I wouldn't blame J'Mar so much on trying to fall on it). He should have ran more, but that recognition will come with time, unless Holtz is telling him not to scramble. Defensively, we really onlY gave up 30 points, and I was really happy that we blocked 2 extra points. And what about that flagrant targeting penalty that the refs whiffed on for the sliding J'Mar. I believe that was the same situation that got Bradford ejected against Navy.
I was sitting right behind the MSST bench, and when the refs missed an obvious call (so many holds and DB's getting to our receivers early) , every time one of their assistants would look at us and say "yeah, that was bad, but it's not up to me" with a huge smile on his face
Anyway, I think the next two games should tell us where we'll be. I think South Carolina may actually be the better defence, but WKU looks deliciously vulnerable ;)
Mama said there'd be days like these. No question it was very hard to watch last night...honestly, if not for turnovers, I believe the score would have been a lot closer.
We have been very fortunate (and spoiled) to having rock star players that have helped this University compete against the P5 schools we've faced the last several years. But let's not kid ourselves. We are who we are, and at this time that's C-USA. What we witnessed last night, to be fair, was really the talent separation between our conference and the SEC. As hard as it was to watch us be beaten into submission by State last night, our REAL test will come in the next few weeks when we're playing our peers.
I am not pleased with the performance last night at all, but I'm not throwing in the towel yet either.
Also, I thought J'Mar''s passes to be very good, except on that screen where he overthrew BScott.
Was happy to Dancy getting some PT. He had 7 rushes for 45 yards. And he showed tremendous discipline not running a kickoff or two out of the EZ. Once he got one only about 3 yds deep, and you could tell he thought about it, but that dude's kicks were so high their coverage team would have been inside the 15 waiting on him. It had to be killing him to take a knee each time. But, to his credit #23 made the smart play.
Also, glad to see former Rummel Raider Israel Tucker get a couple of carries. He was small when he played big time 5A high school football, and he's even smaller now!
JMAR is playing scared and has zero confidence. Any qb that plays that bad deserves to be benched. So far I have yet to see the same qb from last year's ark game. He doesNT make a quick decision and throw to a spot. He waits until he sees someone open. He also seems to be scared of contact. He doesn't seem to want to stand in and throw if he is going to get hit. That was his best asset from the one game last year. It was one game but the coaches need to let him know if he plays even half as bad as yesterday he will be benched.
Scott, glad to see you were honorary captain last night.
On the QB question.....unfortunately we've already seen that Holtz chooses a #1 and sticks with him, no matter what. In Holtz's defense, he has done a damn good job of getting us a good QB three years running. So, maybe he knows what he's doing. Or....all our QBs suck really, really bad and he has our best one starting. Weston looked "okay" last night. But it was against their back-ups and there was hardly any pressure on him to perform well. Game wasn't hanging in the balance....
We've seen pretty bad QB play two consecutive weeks.
Growing pains are to be expected, but game-changing turnovers are the kind that aren't and shouldn't be tolerated.
Say what you want about Baker and the defense, but our offense/special teams giving the other team extra possessions with a short field aren't making Baker's job any easier.
I don't see Smith being a 3 year starter. I bet Jack Abraham is kicking himself for transferring. Our future at QB is a true freshman right now.
Agree with this. After what I've seen in 2017, Jack Abraham is the biggest loser (other than us, of course.) If he had hung around a couple of more months, he'd be our QB now, and we'd be rolling. I cannot believe Holtz let him walk out.
As I've been saying here on BB&B since 1999, college football is all about the QB. Fix that, and you fix the problem.
It's NOT an overreaction. J'Mar is doing almost everything wrong. No exaggeration. I'm not going to list all his flaws because frankly, we'd be here til Thursday. Suffice it to say, J'Mar is a turnover machine, that is playing like a deer in the headlights. He does everything in slow motion, including throwing his passes, making handoffs, etc...
I've noticed over the years that after a bad game some fans tend to say, "our receivers could not get open". JMO, but at the college level receivers get open unless the corner they face is SUPER talented and those are very rare. It's the amount of separation they get and the extra time the QB is allowed to find them. Both take time to develop and the job of our coaches to work them into form. It is a process not an automatic.
IMO, we should have stuck with the simple game plan we used at Arkansas last year, but I assume COYHCSH wanted to gear up for Western next week.
Let's play Walker he has a better arm
Idk. I thought we were blanketed all night. State looked much more athletic to me than in years past.
I think you are going to see a focus on the run going forward. Scott and Craft in the game at the same time. I also think we are going to have more separation going forward due to opponent.
J'Mar is an obvious talent to me. I hope we can get it together quick to salvage the season. What worries me the most about the future is I don't see a young Trent Taylor, Carlos Henderson, or Kenneth Dixon on the roster.
For the record, Westin Elliott came in and drove his team 90 yards to pay dirt, in 15 plays that covered 6:09. Not bad. I realize he probably wasn't playing against MSU's' "one's" for most of that drive, but he still succeeded at doing what he was SUPPOSED to do. And he didn't turn the ball over, and he didn't look scared doing it.
By the way, MSU head coach Dan Mullen did NOT want LA Tech to score that last TD. In addition to arguing the TD pass catch at the end of the game (and foolishly asking for a video review) Mullen re-inserted his first team defense when Elliot and Tech drove the ball deep into MSU territory. I think Elliott and Zach Cousar scored that last TD against mostly MSU starters.
Of the three you named, only Dixon was a stud as a 2nd year player. He was also a stud as a true freshman.
Carlos was very raw as a freshman. He had less than 600 yds in 12 games played. Not bad, but not what we expected from him and he was suspended right off the bat.
Trent was an over achiever who had less than 300 yds as a true freshman. He got better and better each year, but even though he led the team as a 2nd year player, I don't think he was expected to do what he did. No way to gauge heart.
He may not be "the answer", but it's WAY too early to pull him. He played against a great D that had his WR's blanketed all night. Our huge OL did their matador impersonation last night too.
It was TERRIBLE last night, no doubt, but we won't face anybody else that stout on D (USC may have a better scheme, but they won't have the same level of athletes).
We're still right where we thought we'd be. If J'Mar struggles against WKU like he did last night, I'll rethink my position.
I think most of you have forgotten what it's like to have a Sophomore QB. He'll screw up and make our blood pressure go up, but, with good coaching, we'll reap the benefits the next two years.
I agree with johnnylightnin. I still think J'Mar's got the goods at this point. I've seen bad, and he's not bad. In fact, I think he has the mind and talent to be good. Definitely has to improve ball security. I think he's sorting out what routes work with which specific players. There was alot of flukish stuff that happened in last night's game. Normally, mistakes aren't magnified to that degree. Seemed like every miscue was catastrophic. He's not that bad.
We are very limited at QB and WR from what we have seen......I hope Miss St is REAL good, and that is why we were so inept!!
The point is not whether J'Mar has talent. The problem is that he is very very sloppy securing the football and hesitant. He doesn't know whether to throw the ball, dump it off, or run.
The bottom line is HE MUST STOP FUMBLING THE BALL AWAY. A punt after an incompletion is much better than all of these QB fumbles!
Glad I'm not the only one that noticed this. Those were the slowest handoffs I think I'd ever seen. Hold it out, wait a few minutes for the RB to grab it, then pull away. It's a miracle THAT wasn't a tackle/fumble/TD at some point.
Westin Elliot (?) is much snappier at least in that aspect. Slap it into the chest and release.
Turnovers are killers.
A very successful coach once said, every drive needs to end in some kind of kick. An extra point would be the first choice, of course, a FG ain't bad either. And a PUNT! is much better than a turnover!
Keep in mind these are option plays. The QB is reading a defensive player, usually the d end, as to whether he is going to hand it off, run it himself, or in some cases throw it. Because of the situation late in the 4th quarter we didn't run any when Elliot was in the game. J'Mar has a lot of issues he has to correct, but this doesn't appear to be one of them.
That makes sense then.
I thought I saw Elliot run a few option tosses but by that point I wasn't really invested, just waiting for the clock to run out so the misery would be over.
Yes their DBs were much better than our receivers. Which reminds us how good Carlos and Trent where in college. They played six DBs (3) safeties on most downs and were able to handle our running game.
Our O line is not small - we avg 300+ at every position but I thought they did not do a good job of getting to the second level of blocking for run game. Up until MSU quit respecting our run game (second qtr forward) our line did a good job of pass protection, not so much afterwards.
Our D line is avg. Our tackles other than Wallace are undersized a bit and not necessarily athletic - just avg. Our d-ends I thought played the run well but still no consistent pass rush from either. Ferguson is MIA.
Our DBs miss to many tackles, not nearly as physical as MSU dbs.
Receivers - we have no legit deep threat and no legit "go to" possession receiver. Certainly a work in progress.
Their kickers were better than ours. We never returned a kickoff -all kicked deep. However I though our kick coverages were good.
I think the preseason hype was misguided. I think with all the inexperience on offense we probably should have all expected growing pains, sharp pains so far, in the passing game which is making us one dimensional and very predictable. I think Skip needs to use Smith more in running game, make it a true spread "option" not just an occasional QB pull and run. I think Skip needs to mix up Smith's drops and roll him out more and if his receivers are covered then let him use his legs to cause the defense to make choices.
Until Smith matures as a drop back QB, Holtz needs to use him much like MSU uses Fitzgerald. We all saw how avg if not below avg. Fitzgerald is as a drop back passer but he killed us with his legs. LET SMITH RUN.
Lastly, if Smith continues to not take care of the ball I think we have no choice but to play Elliot. If he can protect the ball it would give us a better chance to win. Turnovers distort a game more than anything.
I agree he hasn't looked stellar the first two games and he needs to protect the football. He also needs help from a few people. He hit a few receivers in the numbers only to have the ball dropped or popped up and intercepted. His line was also completely outmatched. He didn't have much time back there. Snaps were still not where they need to be including our most famous play ever unfortunately. There were a few times that (in hindsight) he should have secured the football and just run the ball for whatever he could get. If he had we would probably be talking about how he should have been looking down field instead of always just tucking an running and opening himself up to getting injured.
The reason he looked so good last year in his limited playing time was the people around him allowed him to be better. JMar is trying to do too much right now. He extended plays by escaping the pocket and was trying to go downfield. Many times he simply extended it too long. I will guarantee you Higgins wouldn't look the same with this group as he did last year. That being said, he probably would have kept the game closer by taking some sacks and not turning the ball over. The coaches have to figure out how to sort out the issues around him and a lot of the problems we have with JMar will go away. They also need to coach him up on when to get rid of the football, when to tuck and run and when to take the sack. Hopefully they can shore it up enough that by the end of the year we can't believe people were calling for JMars head after two games.
The Higgins that finished the season last year would have. But Ryan struggled against South Carolina State and MTSU. He really started playing better football by the time the UTEP game came around. I am hoping J'Mar can make as much progress in the next month given who we play and his supporting cast compared to what Ryan had to work with.
I think if we return Reed to the right side (Tackle or Guard), and have someone else as Center, it may solve many problems. He had many low snaps against NWST, and he was the culprit center for "our most infamous play ever" (3rd & 93). Reed was a Freshman All-American last year, and our right side OL has had issues blocking.
If you take that lose out of the stats we had 402 yards offense, the issue is J'Mar making the right reads and being willing to quickly makings the outlet throws. He does not make the decision and get rid of the ball quick enough, and STOP TURNINING THE BALL OVER!
It's at least part of the point as we consider whether or not to replace him with someone with less talent. Higgins had a long leash and he had been in the system much longer. I'm sure Skip is not even close to pulling the plug on J'Mar.
I believe we'll see a difference in our games against like competition. Of course, I could be wrong. I predict he'll look much better against WKU and then there will be another thread like this after he struggles against USC.
I saw positives and negatives. You press more when you trust your guy to beat his man. That's ok.
You press more when you're frustrated and are needing to "make things happen". That's not as okay, but avoiding it comes with experience.
I think he'll get there.
After all the explanations and excuses for JMar's play it all boils down to the fact that if a QB cannot protect the football then he cannot be considered a good or quality QB. Once he takes care of his mistakes including fumbles and consistently throws the ball to areas where the ball is protected from tips for easy picks then I will consider him our QB for now and the future. Until then he has to earn it and deal with it just like all that preceded him. I refuse to grant him the "Rockstar" status that our student body and coach did after week 1 2016.
Just beat WKU! I have $50.00 on the line!
There was a play in the first or second quarter (I think 1st quarter) where Jmar was out of the box and chased down by MSU - he just slung the ball forward blindly while falling down on his ass. We got lucky that MSU defender didn't catch ball because it would be an easy pick 6.
After the play, I knew it will be a lot of growing pain this year with Jmar.
I would really like to see Westin Elliot play again, and see if he's got the goods. Elliot looked really good the other night (compared to J'Mar) during mop up duty, and NONE OF YOU even seem to have noticed. Maybe because so many of you had already left the stadium?
I don't know if Elliot has the goods or not. But when he was QB'ing Sat night, I never felt like he was out of control and going to drop the ball at any second. To the contrary I thought Elliot was much more calm and in control of the offense. That's why I'd like to see him play again.
If you were paying attention, I know you saw Dan Mullens get real pissed at his defense on that last Tech drive, and REPLACE them with several of his starters --in one single wave-- when Tech moved the ball down to around the MSU 30 yd line. Mullens did NOT want Tech to score that last TD. That's why he pitched such a hissy fit when Tech scored. He ran out on the field and demanded the video review, etc...
Make no mistake, Elliot threw that last TD pass against some of MSU's best talent. Not the whole drive, but the last 3 or 4 plays were against some of MSU's best.
