Week 5: South Alabama (9/30)
In order for me to feel comfortable that we will win out (including beating SoMiss, UNT, FAU, and UTSA [all at home]), I would like our defense to keep South Alabama below 13 pts, our offense to score at least 31 points, and for us to have 1 or less turnovers. This team is young, but let's see how we compete against a perceived lesser team.
How does everyone else feel about this game?

Re: South Alabama Game
This game should show us if we are truly getting better and starting to gel.
-
Re: South Alabama Game
Vegas has us favored by 14. No O/U yet.
I hope we play good football like we did last week. Improvement on our OLine would be nice.

I feel the exact same way. If we dominate this game, I'll feel like we're a good team again. If we don't, then I'll feel this will be a rebuilding not reloading year.

Our defense has actually been pretty good if you really look at the games. They just get worn out towards the end. Our offense just needs to tighten up to keep us in the games. I know this statement can be said about ANY game by ANY team.
But honestly, looking at how the games have gone so far score wise, our defense has really been effective against all the teams for most of the games. We were blanking USC, Miss St was not effective until the 2nd half, and the others just didn't have an effective offense.
I could be wrong but hey it's what I have seen so far.

Isn't it nice to spend that quality time in Minden? So much to see and so much to do while you are delayed there. And just think, when they finish it in late 2017, they'll be ramping up to start over on the same section in summer of 2018.

I hope they move the rope that divides the red and white lot allowing more folks with a white tag in there.

I saw a couple of tweets by Tech students offering to quit school and help the road crew if it would speed up completion.

don't let the engineering students help. They will find every problem with that road and insist on fixing it. The project could take 2 times as long because they would want it done right.

Add this to the fact that they just fired their OC and who knows what we can expect offensively from South Alabama on Saturday. We've performed really well against Sun Belt competition in our last few matchups. I hope we're not due for an "Oh Crap" game like we had against NW State a few years ago. I'm thinking that South Alabama will play with all out determination against us. We better be ready for tough, physical game.

I agree. I've said all season that this team CAN'T SCORE. Too often this team drives the ball 60+ yards, and then settles for a FG, or turns the ball over. In fairness --and unlike many of our CUSA brethren-- we've played 3 tough defenses, 2 from the SEC and of course WKU.
I'm hoping the "step down" in competition will result in us seeing a drastic improvement in our red zone success.

Oh, I see. Kinda like Southern Miss's QB Nick Mullens last season? USM was so bad without him, they lost to Charlotte, UTSA, Old Dominion and UNT. Of course, he returned just in time for the LA Tech game. :o
This stuff only seems to happen to LA Tech.

Re: Week 5: South Alabama (9/30)
So, USA will show up with a new or without an OC but with their #1 QB, What to expect. I would bet some kind of goofy trick play very early in their first offensive series. Last year Mullins and their #2 QB showed out early with some kind of trick play very early the first series I believe and we were off balance the rest of the game. This year, Northwestern very early on with a trick play, western Kentucky with an early trick play, and I believe MSU pulled one also, is there a trend here? We do not seem to defend these plays well, the success rate for these plays I don't believe is very good, except when used against TECH.
Correct me if I am wrong on these, but is USA watches any game film, they will know where to start.

I don't think MSU's trick play worked. We had them in the first quarter. WKU scared me with their first play. You are correct, we play pretty straight up defense and these can throw us off. I guess doing it on the first play can throw many teams off, though. We need to be prepared against USA, because I suspect they will do anything they can to pull a trick out of their hat.

Watch ESPN is going to be the only way to stream it LIVE. What kind of Smart TV & DVD player do you have - that will determine if you can stream on TV or DVD player?
http://www.espn.com/watchespn/about
To start watching:
- Download the WatchESPN app here:The WatchESPN app is also available on Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV.
- Select your TV provider when prompted.
- Enter your TV subscription username and password.

You can always buy a ROKU stick - cheapest around $30. This plugs into your TV's HDMI port and you can watch all of the ESPN3/Stadium games on it.

I have WatchESPN, but I don't see the LA Tech game on it for Saturday. In fact, I see just about every team in the world BUT LA Tech. I even see Price Wilson's new school --Bryant University.

Re: Week 5: South Alabama (9/30)
I found it by going to the below path on their WatchESPN mobile app. Once I got to the ESPN3 listing, you have to scroll to Saturday.
Menu > Channels > ESPN3 > South Alabama vs. Louisiana Tech (Football)
It's listed at 7:00 PM (I assume their listing is in eastern time).
-
Re: Week 5: South Alabama (9/30)
I just hope their streaming is better than the Northwestern game. WKU stream was not that bad.

Instead, just keep scrolling down past the "Browse by Sport" option (which includes the "NCAA College Football" option) and scroll all the way down to the "Browse By Channel" option, and select "ESPN3". That's where you'll find an assortment of European Soccer League games, some college Field Hockey games, some Women's Volleyball games, etc... and of course, the LA Tech vs South Alabama college FOOTBALL game. :shocked2:
Apparently our football games do not qualify for the "NCAA College Football" category anymore. :icon_roll: But hey...it's there.

Re: Week 5: South Alabama (9/30)
Has anyone watched USA this season? I know they have had some injuries at the QB position and are making a change at OC. I don't believe they are athletic at QB so that should help. I don't think they can score more than 23. I expect more 13-17 range. Question is can we get some momentum on offense and score some TDs rather than bring forced into FG attempts? I don't know much about their defensive abilities. I can't imagine that they are better than MS St, USC, or even WKU defensively. My prediction is 34-13.

Defensive line is fairly stout and deep. I expect Tech to have some trouble running the ball early.
They're a spread option team, heavily favoring the running back. Lead back Xavier Johnson is quick and has good vision. None of the RBs are a true receiving threat.
In passing situations, the QB seems to favor slot receivers. The outside WRs may be over 6', but they can't get separation and the QB can't get the ball to them. Our D-Line will hopefully keep the middle locked down, and our speed in the secondary will be able to handle the perimeter rushing. Offense shoots themselves in the foot quite a bit. They're built for long, clock-killing drives... not much big play ability, and that means more opportunities to turn the ball over. I'd expect the new OC to try and adding some big plays to the repertoire. It seems to be the missing ingredient.
If we stop the run and force the QB to beat us, we'll be fine. He was 11/25 for 109 yards, No TDs, 1 INT and 1 Fumble lost last week. Pressure him and he folds. No zip on the ball, and favors short routes over the middle. Doesn't have the arm strength to take advantage of mismatches outside the hash marks. Leading receiver was 5'7 Sam Harris out of the slot. His leading target was 6'2 JR Jamarius Way. He finished with 4 receptions, but must have been targeted 10 times. Most of the completions (4) were drag routes over the middle.
If Tech gets rolling on offense, it won't be close.
-
Re: Week 5: South Alabama (9/30)
I'm not sure we're the scoring machine to pull off a blowout yet...I'm thinking Tech 28 - USA 17.

When we stopped turning the ball over against NWSt we blew them out
No turnovers vs WKU and we won and USA is NOT in the same ballpark with WKU
Don't turn the ball over against Miss St and we are in the ballgame
No INT vs Carolina and we blow them out
It's rather simple - since MSU we have done very well protecting the ball - do the same this weekend and we a good

Re: Week 5: South Alabama (9/30)
We have just had 1 interception per game vs MSU, WKU, and SC. Thats too much, but its progress from the additional fumbles vs MSU and NSU.

I think if you look back - we played very few CLEAN games last year
A turnover is a turnover whether it's a fumble or INT
Last year in some games a PUNT was a turnover with our defense

Everything you state about this turnover thing is true. I think part of the problem for our fans is, in the recent past our offenses were explosive enough to cover up such mistakes. When you're averaging 52 points a game, one TD for the opposition off of a turnover just doesn't hurt as much. But when your offense has as much trouble scoring as THIS years Tech team does, one turnover can lead to disaster.....just as it did last week in Columbia.

But, we're getting ready to put down a new floor and when we put everything back (the furniture) I'm getting a 90" TV for my Cave, and the 70" will suffice for our bedroom. The quality is awesome! Re: Week 5: South Alabama (9/30)
This board has been fairly quiet this week. Is that a reflection on our opponent and most everyone assuming this will be a ho-hum "walk in the park?" It's not just a reflection on South Alabama....i.e. it's not totally their fault. We opened the season with:
NSU - an old rival, who beat us the previous time, and besides it was the season opener which always generates some excitement.
Moo State - SEC opponent at home....nuff said
WKU - has become a big rival and a HUGE game annually
USC - another SEC opponent and a game many of us knew we could/should win
So, here comes a Belcher.... hmmmm.... as fans we can afford to be ho-hum. The players and coaches cannot. The Dawgs better be ready to play. It's one of those "it's their Super Bowl" scenarios for them. They'll be ready to play.

1. be sure to sit during anthem ... we lost game on tipped pass - guess Illinois bowl games do not qualify and 1 point losses is what he shoots for --
2. be sure to lock arms with other fans who think like you do ( ie- green bay ) that will be hard to find
3. yep-- Skip wants losses on his resume --makes it easier to get better paying job
4. Skip loves watching his players with their hearts torn out after tough loss
5. I really am bringing a young man and parents to game today-- he is Holy Angel attendee=== I will try and find you ... cancel that, he loves watching Tech . trying to figure way to connect you with him but he does not deserve that..
FYI-- Skip has beat Notre Dame and had teams ranked in top 20s in past . Can someone take a photo at game and post on BBS ?

Re: Week 5: South Alabama (9/30)
I tend to be an A..hole when folks say cruel things about players, coaches , team etc. Sportsdawg sat around with me yesterday and visited about some of our most horrible losses and teams over last 50 years ... he was on sideline for a couple. We are 3 generations of die hard fans, grandson cries when we lose... anybody remember when Skip was hired and the anti-skip posts were coming in from Florida?
just my opinion but the quality of players he has recruited is crazy good--he is first coach in years to build for the future - just to come signing day and watch the excitement of die hards . we keep staff together and level of recruits the program will be a blast to watch

Re: Week 5: South Alabama (9/30)
If we don't score more than 30 today, our offense is in real trouble. I think we will. I believe Bonnette has over 100 yards receiving by the half. This game won't be close.

I think it might be difficult for us to score 30 or more points today. SA has a good running game, and holds the ball for a long time. They are successful going for it on 4th down, 4/6 on the season. Their punter is averaging 47 yards a punt. I have seen many teams react very well for the 1st game after a Coordinator has been replaced. They can defend the run and have 8 sacks so far. If they get more turnovers than we do, this game could be one of those wtf games.
Their biggest weakness is their pass defense and J'Mar throws a great deep ball, so maybe using the pass to setup the run will be the best option in this game.
I hope my concerns are unfounded and we blow them out of the water.
