There has to be cash involved or this was an awful deal. 2 for 1 with NC State? They aren’t Miss State.

Another bad part is that we get the last game, so they can easily buy us out without coming to Ruston.

From the balcony it looks like a bad deal -
My guess is they never come to Ruston and we get in the neighborhood of a $800k to $1 million for going there twice

Hopefully the buyout is $1 million.

Re: Football. LA Tech Football Announces Three-Game Series with NC State - latechspor
It is amazing how we never announce financial details around these 2 for 1 agreements our AD loves so much. It is not difficult to find $1.2M-$1.5M game guarantees for single road games that enable us to host a much cheaper opponent OR TWO.
https://www.usatoday.com/story/sport...ams/608668001/
But the basic transactions are like the ones Farmer negotiated while serving as Louisiana-Lafayette’s athletics director from 2011 through 2016. In 2016, he scheduled a game at Mississippi for November that will give Louisiana-Lafayette $1.525 million. Two years earlier, he had arranged for the Ragin Cajuns to play at Texas A&M in mid-September for $1.25 million. Those two games will account for for 11% of Louisiana-Lafayette’s operating revenue in 2017-18, athletics department spokesman Matt Sullivan said.
This is the model under which eight schools affiliated with the Big Ten, Southeastern or Pac-12 conferences are paying at least $1 million to a season-opening opponent from one of the FBS conferences outside the Power Five. Altogether, there are at least 26 games this season in which a Power Five school is set to pay $1 million or more to an opponent.

I like the deal a little better.
Quote:
Tech will be guaranteed $1.1 million for its 2021 visit to N.C. State, a fair market value meeting before the teams begin a home-and-home series 2024 and 2025. To make room for that road game, Louisiana Tech athletic director Tommy McClelland told the News-Star Monday that the moved the 2021 home date with Baylor to Week 3 of the 2023 season.

Horrible deal, but you like it?
Cal has nothing to do with this deal. We don't know what that cost us and never will w/out an FOIA request.

Moved a home game vs. Baylor back two years.... traded a HOME game for a ROAD game.
We are hamstrung by our Southland Conference AD. Who, BTW, also views our game vs. the tiggers as our Super Bowl. Yeah, baby!

I think our money games could get higher payouts if we weren’t a threat to get paid to beat someone on their home field. I know we aren’t a huge threat, but more so than ULLLLL and ULLLLLM.

Re: Football. LA Tech Football Announces Three-Game Series with NC State - latechspor
1.1 million isn't too bad if it is attached to a home and home. If we took 1.1 million for just a road game I wouldn't like it.
The key missing piece of information is what the buyout is for the final home game. If that buyout is too low this is a bad deal.

I disagree - the $1.1 million is the bottom floor we should be getting for a ONE-OFF guarantee game, the fact that it is tied to a home and home is what makes it a bad deal in my book...
NCSt made bank on us for two guarantee games, basically FCS money....

It is a money game and our AD accepted what the bar was 5 years ago. The buyout amount for the Ruston game has nothing to do with how little they are paying us to play the money game.
-
Re: Football. LA Tech Football Announces Three-Game Series with NC State - latechspor
We will make $1.1 million from the 2021 game and then play a home and home where no cash changes hands and the first game is on the road. That's the problem.
If the buyout is as little as $300,000 then NC State can buy out the road game in Ruston after playing Tech at home twice. They would be getting two guarantee home games for $700,000 each. Keep in mind we got $700,000 from Tennessee in 2004.
And I can promise you that if NC State loses either of the two home games they're not coming to Ruston.

As it reads, its is a $1.1 million money game and a home-home deal. If they back out of our home game, the buyout would basically be the second game's payment.

That's 1.1 plus the buyout. Anything under 1.1M for the buyout is a horrible deal.

We don't know the number yet, but I would be surprised if NC State entered into the deal with a number much bigger than that. Even if it's 500,000 they would be getting two games with Tech for $1.6 million or $800,000 per game.
And as I said, if they lose either of the first two games they're not coming to Ruston.

I agree with the bolded statement. I would even go so far as to say it's below the floor we should be getting for a guarantee game.

I don't see how you can say this. The two were clearly negotiated together. We seem to have a pretty easy time getting money games for around a million dollars. What we are not good at is getting home and homes.
If they offered us the following scenario's which would you choose:
1.5 million for a 1 and done road game
1.1 million for a money game plus a home and home agreement.
That may not be a bad deal. As I said, we don't seem to have trouble finding money games. We do seem to struggle to find home and homes. It's not ideal, but it might not be a terrible deal. The bigger problem is our home game is the final game of the series giving them an easy out if they decide to buy us out. If the buyout of that last game is less than 1 million it's probably a really bad deal. I suspect that it's more around the 300k range as others have suggested.

"We" are not negotiating. This is not about Tech. It's about our inept AD who has NEVER put together a good deal for his #everloyalbe.
Look at what USM is getting for road games with P5s. We are not even close.
1.1 is a bad deal for us even if we have a guarantee of a game in Ruston, which we obviously don't or our AD would have been crowing about it. He is too stupid to even ask for a good deal.

Re: Football. LA Tech Football Announces Three-Game Series with NC State - latechspor
I dont expect 1.6 mil from NCState, especially if they were throwing in a home-home. They seem to live up to their home-home agreements well enough, they've played plenty G5s away the past few years.

Yeah, just trust them. No need to put anything in a contract. Didn't we get close to $1.5 when we played them in 2013?

Re: Football. LA Tech Football Announces Three-Game Series with NC State - latechspor
Remember Jim Oakes said he could get a home and home with Kansas all day long - but he would rather have the money game and buy an FCS or lower level FBS because he NETTED a lot more money in the end...
In reality - will more people show up in JAS for NCSt than they do for Southern, NWST, Grambling, NLU or ULLLLLLL? probably not
So it makes better $EN$E financially to buy the first three and schedule home and homes with the second two and get the MOST for a guarantee with the P5's
The one school we moved out of JAS that made no sense to me was BYU - I actually think they would of been a very good draw due to their mini-ND like following

Good post. You described this scenario exactly how I see it. I have no problem with the deal except for the fact that LA Tech doesn't get the home game until game 3. If that buyout is less than $1M and NC State chooses to buy the game out, then it's a bad deal.

This deal could be fine if we were paid more and if the home game were in the middle. Right now I find the deal lacking on our end.

Back in 2021, Tech and NC State had agreed to push the Ruston leg of a 3 game contract out to 2034.

You're telling me a P4 team bought out an away game at a G6 stadium? Shocking.
This is why you have to play those when you have them.
But I wonder why we're letting them just pay us to move it. Why not make them buy it out and then go double dip by playing another P4 money game? Surely the flat buy out rate plus the money from a new P4 game would be more than $1 million, right? And it's not like we just really need to play NC State. I mean, it's fine to play them, but not at the expense of leaving money on the table (even a nickel). And if they want out of the deal, fine - buy out of the deal, we don't owe them favors or anything.
If it's us wanting cash, I guess that's on us. Probably not worth it to buy them out and then go find a $ game to cover the buyout (although we've done that before - Arkansas and Texas Tech, right?). But I'd think we'd want the P4 home game. And they can't be planning around SOS, that's like 10 years from now.
Ugh. Scheduling is hard, but why do we always make it so opaque and stupid-on-its-face?

By 2034, betting that the average buyout amount will be massive. Well, massive for schools with real negotiators.

At the rate we are going Tech football wouldn't be around by 2034.

Re: Football. LA Tech Football Announces Three-Game Series with NC State - latechsports.
Lots of people have tried to work with this or previous administrations. Tried to raise money, raise alumni numbers, all kinds of things and have been shut down, or the admin half assed their end of the deal.
I imagine those same people are a lot of the ones still hanging around on this board, you probably fall into that category as well. So, some of us have earned the right to moan and bitch because we are at this point in Tech's history in spite of those efforts.

Yep, Bunch of underpaid Tech grads looking for the next gig with overpaid bureaucrats as bosses. Our new AD praising our DEI commish Judy was the last straw with football. Our "pitching coach" getting a promotion was the last straw for baseball.

The current state of the college minor leagues is going to push out all but 40-50 schools that can spend the money to hang around. The rest of (1A, FBS, CFP or whatever acronym) will effectively become a slightly more affluent FCS caliber of leagues. Thats where it's all headed.
Couple the crash of the system with the crappy leadership we have had and here we are, in a 10ft hole with a 2ft ladder.

The college landscape is truly the minor leagues to the equivalent professional sports leagues. The major powers (AAA), next group (AA), the third (A). I believe Tech still thinks its in AA but we are more A slipping into the Summer Developmental League.

Be careful, we don't have the money or the leadership to be talking smack to the Carolina League. We might be able to take a summer league or two.... maybe  :((
