Re: What happened with Wren?
He didn't like it here and was telling his family the coaches weren't treating him right. His dad was being an ass, so the coaches talked to Maureese. He told his dad the truth, made nice with the coaches, and decided to leave.
-
Re: What happened with Wren?
So much for giving it a little time. Doesn't seem he was around long enough to go "through thick and thin" with his teammates.
-
Re: What happened with Wren?

Re: What happened with Wren?
Good riddance!!! If he doesn't want to here, he needs to be gone.
-
Re: What happened with Wren?
Don't be surprised if he winds up playing at Arkansas or SMU.

Wren was originally recruited HARD by Arkansas and was committed to Arkansas. But, he flipped to us when Arkansas had the coaching change in December.
This is truly a sad day at LA Tech. I hate to see this happen worse than any other recruit from this year's recruiting class. But as someone else mentioned, Wren sure didn't give it much time. We're still less than 2 weeks into fall camp.

Talent can go long ways in making up for attitude, but sometimes there is way too much attitude to overcome. That's just
my guess, no idea if that was truly the case.

Probably had more to do with the difference between Dallas/ Mesquite environment compared to Ruston than anything else. Not much to do in Ruston compare to the metroplex... and most of the high schools in DFW probably have comparable facilities to La Tech.

I agree. He may have been on campus during the second summer session as while. It still is feels like a snap decision, but I haven't been 18 years old for a while now.

Re: What happened with Wren?
With all of the new rules making it easier and easier for kids to transfer it is also making it easier for them to be influenced by FBS coaches wanting to fill/upgrade talent 'holes' in their football program. All it takes is a few conversations with the right 'mentoring' coaches/adults who can influence them.
Hate losing him, but at least we didn't have Wren for a couple of years first. Our investment was still pretty modest. Time to get someone who WANTS to be here as his replacement.

It is just a widely accepted practice for incoming guys to commit and decommit and for players to ask for a release and move on to another school. I see a coaching change after a player commits as maybe a reason to change, but then again, overcoming a coaching change, is that not one of life's lessons.

His 2 team mates committed before he did. He probably thought he was going to start this year and when he found out he wasn't, he got pissed and quit. The team is better off without him.

Re: What happened with Wren?
He was immediately unhappy. Too bad, but better that he moves on.

It's the other way around- BJ Williamson and Broderick Calhoun talked Wren in to Tech. These are two really good guys and will work really hard for the program. I hope they have the best of luck.

Re: What happened with Wren?
Tabnlu is correct. Wren committed after both Calhoun and Williamson. Dogsince65, the "3rd guy" you are thinking of is DJ Jackson is still with Tech. He was not a Mesquite-Horn HS teammate, but a West Mesquite HS grad.
Just my speculation, but I think an FBS head coach got in Wren's father's ear about how Maureese is too good for a school like LA Tech and should transfer immediately.
Per Corey Diaz:
The News-Star asked about Wren leaving the team and Holtz confirmed the wide receiver had been granted his release.
“Maureese came to see me, decided that he wanted to transfer. I talked to him and his father about the whole thing. I wish he would’ve stayed and saw it through but he felt like for him he needed to leave,” Holtz said. “I told him before, there aren’t bars on the windows here, we want people that want to be here and he felt like he needed to go to another school. We gave him his release and he left.”

And since ne never enrolled for school and most semester schools start tomorrow, he will be a freshman somewhere soon... Was it b/c he wasn't on first team or was he just not a good fit in Ruston?

Re: What happened with Wren?
When it becomes a common practice for one teams players to be recruited by another school to transfer, things will begin to deteriorate in the world of college football. I think it is just common courtesy to leave a player alone after he has made his decision and signed, I think that is not to much to expect out of people who are supposed to be decent.
The next logical step is going to be for the cartel to have the sitting out one year rule done away with, CFB will not be that much different than the NFL.

It will be interesting to see where he ends up . Someone is about to look like what he is a sleaze individual.

Re: What happened with Wren?
Yeah, sounds like a culture shock. Take Twitter for what it’s worth but I interpreted a couple of tweets by some of the incoming freshman to be disparaging of the social life in Ruston.

Well yeah, if they are from DFW area in Texas, definitely.

Re: What happened with Wren?
I keep telling people that going to Tech and Ruston is like going to Summer Camp the other Nine months of the year. You have to learn a brand new Social network and build friendships. We know that a lot of new kids can't handle the shock.
People would ask me 'Ruston was dry, what did you do?' Then I would tell them about the things we did like get together at someone's apartment, go to Funroe, go to Wil-Mart (moment of silence) or out in the woods etc and have all these stories and how I know all these people to this day.
Then sometimes those same people who asked would say kind of regrettably 'Oh, I just went to the bars in my town but we never did anything like that'.

People get too stuck on the idea that you must go to bars or big parties to have a good time. If you have a good group surrounding you, you can have a good time with the simple things.

Re: What happened with Wren?
One thing I will never forget was watching the most spectacular meteor shower that I have ever seen in my entire life. I believe it was in the spring of 1968 when we read in The Times about a meteor shower was supposed to be seen over north La. around midnight. So, there was about 6 or 7 of us that got in my roommates car and drove west on I-20 and got out in somebody's cow pasture. We waited until midnight and had only seen a few meteors and we were all disappointed. So, we start back to the car and about halfway to the car the sky just lights up. It was really spectacular and something I'll never forget.

Ruston is boring if all you're looking to do is get into trouble. I never had any problem having a good time.

Re: What happened with Wren?
I miss Ruston all the time. I met the best people there. There’s something about the place you grew up. I was raised in minden and left at 18 for Tech. The next 4 years, I really grew up. I met different people and learned how to think for myself and prioritize what I want. When I go back I drive around town and kinda re-live some things.

Minden to Ruston is a little different than DFW metroplex to Ruston....Ruston is an upgrade from Minden :). I'm sure the red dots will follow....

The kid went to Horn High (mesquite, tx). The town isn't that nice, actually it sorta sucks. I visit every few months to visit family. We would have to drive to Forney for decent breakfast.
Ruston > Mesquite

Ruston > Mesquite
Really? What’s available within 30minute drive from Mesquite vs. a 30 minute drive from Ruston?

I tried the Rotolos in Ruston a couple of weeks ago and that's my new favorite place. I will certainly be hitting it every time I visit home.

Re: What happened with Wren?
Having lived in the “promised land” of a Texas metropolis for the past two years...give me Ruston now, as a college student or in the future. You do the same stuff in a big city as you do in a smaller town (go out to eat, hang out with friends, go to movies, etc.) for 95% of your entertainment. The other 5% that’s not available elsewhere (major league sports) is generally price prohibitive so you can’t do it that often.
You know what Ruston and smaller places don’t have? Rivers of concrete filled with crazy drivers, debris fallen from trucks, and the worst traffic jams you can imagine.

Re: What happened with Wren?
We had a blast! Truthfully, between actually caring about doing well academically, and playing soccer, I was usually glad to be at home most evenings. Soccer practice was a grueling 2 1/2 hrs, about 3-5:30 every day, unless we had a midweek game one night. But, when time and circumstances allowed...and we often made time!...we partied like it was Animal House! Mostly it was a party at someone's apartment or house and it was, ahem, WILD! Mix in trips to Funroe, usually The Office Disco, or to S'port/Bossier, and there was never a shortage of "night life" for us.
But, as I said, most of us were serious students. We wanted to earn a degree and do well, like make an "A" in class....or, settle for a "B" in some of the harder ones. It's true, Tech is NOT a party school. If that's what you want go somewhere else. Tech is for those wishing to make something of themselves.
(But...we had fun! :D)

That's why players like Trent Taylor do well at Tech and guys like Wren move on. All of us who are Tech alum know exactly what you're talking about. And people who aren't, don't. And never will.

I live less than two miles from a Braums. I love it and the fact that I can buy the best milk ever and ice cream on par with Blue Bell is very cool. Having said that, if given the choice between a Braums bacon cheeseburger or a triple monster with cheese from Griffs, gimme the minster.

I think too much is made of the social challenges facing "big city kids" when they go to a small college town (like Ruston). It's not like most of these kids have any money anyway. Most college kids don't have the money to hang out in bars 3 or 4 nights a week the way grown working professionals do. And the one's that do (e.g., Johnny Manziel) often live to regret it.
Nope, it sounds like this Wren kid has some stupid grown-up in his ear screwing with his head. I'm sure it's got nothing to do with his transition from the big city.

I agree. I don't think it was the transition from the metroplex to Ruston. Hell, he wasn't here long enough to really experience anything. I think he came in thinking he was going to be an immediate star and it didn't happen, so he left. What's frustrating is he could have been a major player if he would've toughed it out and continued the course.

My wife and I have considered moving back to Ruston some day. Is that so illogical? Ruston has a lot to offer. And it was a fine setting for many former Bulldogs that are now players in the NFL.
Again, I don't think LA Tech or Ruston did anything wrong. I guarantee you this is about some irresponsible grown up giving a gullible kid some very bad advice.

I would very much like to die in Ruston.
Sure wanted to during the Mississippi State game!

Re: What happened with Wren?
Having grown up in Ruston and moved away for a time and then back for 15 years, I like it more now than I ever did. When I came back, all my old friends had moved away or made new friends and I was forced to get to know a bunch of people who didn’t grow up here. Greatest friends a guy could ask for.

Wow, thanks. I teach at Horn and live in Mesquite in a nice neighborhood. Appreciate you trashing my home.

Sure wanted to during the Mississippi State game!
I am with you about Ruston -- I spent 18 years on Air Force Bases ( with my dad) and after Tech in Shreveport . Whenever I get to Ruston I think how great living a peaceful life in Ruston. been an avid traveler but have it down to Ruston or Cains Australia

Re: What happened with Wren?
Lets calm down on Mesquite -- remember we have 3 freshman on the team-- they probably happy with Mesquite -- they may read BBB ...

Again, I don't think LA Tech or Ruston did anything wrong. I guarantee you this is about some irresponsible grown up giving a gullible kid some very bad advice.
Neither Ruston or Tech did anything wrong. I agree. I even agree that an adult was most likely in his ear saying he could do better.....He was homesick, not used to a small town, and realized he wasn’t the big man on campus anymore.....It doesn’t negate the fact that he is a great athlete.....if we want to achieve more as a football program, how do we go about attracting and keeping great athletes? Dixon came as a freshman, a good number of the other contributors over the last several years have been transfers.....

My grandparents. The only reason I know about Braum’s. They used to live in Arlington, a stone’s throw from the Ballpark....

Most of our players came to Tech as freshmen. I'd say most of them like getting out of the big cities.

Re: What happened with Wren?
I was walking across campus the other day and i heard some parents and kids quip, "it's like a ghost town...". No doubt it REALLY REALLY was on that day! Ruston is extremely desolate when there are no students around. (At my age now, I like it like that!) But I have thought about students and folks who come on a visit during the summer months. I almost feel compelled to say, "this is not the NORM!" Come back September 1. :shocked2:
You can definitely involve yourself as much as you choose to or choose not to! There is plenty to do and Mayor Walker is adding to it virtually daily!
Applicable saying, "you can't fit a square peg in a round hole."??

Re: What happened with Wren?
A few years ago I was staying at one of the Ruston hotels and walked into the lobby one morning with a Tech polo shirt on. A BIG kid approached me and asked me if I was a coach. I said no and we talked for a moment. He was an offensive lineman on a recruiting visit. I later heard him on the phone talking to his mom. He said, "You won't believe this mom, but there are cows across the street from the hotel!" Turns out he was from inner city Los Angeles, needless to say he chose not to come to Tech. Takes all types.

Re: What happened with Wren?
I had some banking people come in from Houma last week for a visit -
Two of them were so excited because they had seen a fox with it's kit, three deer, a coyote and some turkeys on their drive up...
One of the ladies was complaining that the hills were making her dizzy and queasy in the stomach....

Good grief. Fayetteville is nearly deserted during the summer (compared to when school is in). The difference is night and day.

Re: What happened with Wren?
If a kid wants to be good at football then Ruston is an excellent place. Good facilities, great s&c coach, and a HC that can teach you to be a professional. Not to mention some high quality position coaches that have experience getting players to the NFL. If you aren't into the "lifestyle" you probably aren't going to the league regardless.

Re: What happened with Wren?
The times I have been over on the quad on game day I have found it deserted, too, but that's because everyone is over at JAS. The few other campuses I have been on it is the same, depending on where the stadium is. In College Station Kyle Field is closer to central campus and Texas is almost in the middle, so the activity is more "on campus". Kansas State is much like our situation, but even further away, so all the tail gating and activity is further from the main campus. Kansas was kind of on the edge but all of the Frat houses were on the walk from where we parked (BTW you would have thought it was Tech with all the red and blue). Baylor used to be a few miles away so I did not go to campus on game day - we had an alumni event on the river (Brazos). Houston has gotten much better since moving back to campus. My point is that even on game the central part of a lot of other campuses is deserted, not just ours.
