Probably more than we are willing to spend....
His buyout is around 2 million, thanks to Wonder Boy.
Tommy needs to go also. Clean house, top to bottom.
UCF fans warned us - we didn’t listen and now we are getting exactly what they said about holtz 6 years ago.
Holtz is just a symptom or scapegoat...the problems run much deeper.
It sucks that we once again have lost all the momentum to build up our fan base.
I still don’t think Dr. Guice cares much about sports.
It’s not that he doesn’t care...just doesn’t know how to change the situation....keeps listening to the same voices that DR did.
SOUTH Florida, but yes.
And some of us was beating the drum before they came around. And were shouted down. Then those people (that shouted down) jumped from BB&B ship. And some felt smug they were "right" because of all the bowls. And ignored everything else. And now we're 6-6 last year. Likely 6-6 this year. And those in with influence will just keep on keepin' on..
Some may be happy that we finally have a coach that truly loves Ruston. I never understood why people got upset when coaches left. We are a stepping stone. Look at UCF and Boise. Yes, those guys played in BCS/Access Bowls, but they still left to something bigger. Rather have someone trying to prove something than someone that is content.
There needs to be some kind of reaction SD, Tonight was a good example of how we are settling for mediocrity. No offense intended to anyone, but we have a program with no leadership on or off the field, no chemistry, and no desire to be the best program in the state. I believe it starts at Tmac's office.
I thought long and hard about this before posting. I didn’t want to post when I was mad and say something I later regretted. I’m done spending any more money on Tech football while Holtz or TMac are in their current positions. Holtz is a good guy, but he has no business being the head coach here. Every year it’s the same ole $hit. Success with Holtz is a mirage, you can see it but you never reach it. Next year is always the year. A conference championship will NEVER HAPPEN under Holtz leadership.
As much as we want Coach Holtz out, it's not going to happen. I would hope that at the very least, pressure would be put on him to turn over the play calling duties to someone else.
I wonder if USM regrets running Bower?
Holtz is no Bower. He has an embarrassing home loss every year. 2013, that whole year was crap highlighted by Tulane. 2014, beat at home by an FCS. 2015, skulldrug by his daddy Southern Miss. 2016, what do you know, we didn’t lose a home game. 2017, who didn’t beat us? 2018, smoked by CUAB. What coach worth his salt gets beat like that every year at home?
You need to go back and look at the circumstances around Bower’s firing.
I don’t propose to know the answer to my original question, but it’s something to consider.
Bower won four conference championships and played in a fifth title game...Skip has had the Dawgs in 2 championship games and lost both.
We have played in 4 straight bowl games....is that enough to grow a fan base and create interest in the program?
Sounds like a lot of loyal, die hard fans are losing interest quickly.
Fans want to see continual improvement, looks like we have plateaued under Holtz.
Championships! That's what grows a fanbase and grows a program. The bowl wins are great. They add to a program's resume'. ESPN makes sure the whole nation can see your team play in a bowl. All good things. But when 80 out of 132 teams bowl, some with losing records, many at 6-6 (like us last year) it kind of taints the whole thing.
Winning your conference has to be the #1 goal every year. Only ONE team can claim a conference title each year. JUST ONE! Heck, 5 or maybe even 6 CUSA teams will bowl every year. But only ONE will do so as conference champ! Looks like that honor will be between MTSU and UAB this year. Yeah, I know, there's a lot of football left. But those two are sitting in the driver seats.
I tried to get an old friend who graduated from Tech around the same time as I to join me at a Tech football game, but he politely declined. I asked him why, because he used to never miss a home game and also traveled to maybe a couple of away games each season. He told me that about ten years after he graduated, Tech lost a game on the road after leading most of the game and it upset him and put him in such a bad mood to the point that his wife asked him why he continued to put himself and their family through it. And said he told her she had a good point and from that day forward he stopped following Tech altogether and “life was better”.
I told him he could probably benefit from some professional psychiatric help. He laughed and agreed but still wasn’t interested in coming to the game. I sincerely hope that couldn’t happen to many other fans that are as dedicated as my buddy once was.
Your friend’s story sounds exactly like my story. I will admit it is a personal problem and the easy solution is to back away. That’s what I have done and so have a lot of others. However, I will never jump to another team. I tellthose friends “roll tide” just to piss them off.
If I were a player, I could not play for a coach with Skip’s personality. I would need a coach that balances being fired up or cool as a cucumber. Skip lacks emotion, intensity and sense of urgency and it trickles down thru the team. I can’t deal with that.
That guy doesn’t have a clue! Does he have dirt on Guice?????? Unfortunately, it’s really hard to fire people these days. Layoffs are common (don’t need to tell someone they suck) so much easier. If you suck at something, you need to be let go!!!! Tommy boy sounded like a moron during the interview last night, he needs to go ASAP!!!!
Agreed.
I'm a whole lot more mellow than I used to be. But, I thrived on emotion....mostly because God didn't bother to bless me with too much athleticism, and that pissed me off!..as a player, and even as a young coach. I was always so hyped I was bouncing off the ceiling! I loved my coaches because they were azzholes and treated us like it was US Marines' boot camp. Well, I didn't like them too much at the time, but I respected them, we all did! and were afraid (terrified!) to disappoint them. I love 'em now. They were like those hardazz teachers we all had and it was only many years later that we are able to look back and realize what a huge service they did us.
One of my coaches used to call me "Peanut." I finally asked him, why do you call me that? He growled, "Because I know you don't like it. You have a problem with that!?" All I could do was mutter, "No sir." We never did anything right....according to them. Even if we made a play, we would later learn, usually in practice the following week, we could have done it even better. But ya know what I remember the most...
I picked off a swing pass to preserve a win. While the offense was taking a knee to run out the clock, that coach looked at me, winked, and said, "Good job, Peanut."
Those coaches made us better, more successful, than we had any business being. Talent-wise we were a 2-8 team. Yet, we routinely won 8-10 games and made the state playoffs.
I personally could not care less is USM regrets getting rid of Bower. And, that situation does not compare at all with a discussion about getting rid of Holtz. If Holtz achieved at the level of Bower’s success the title of this thread would likely be, “How does this sound……. Skip Holtz Field at Joe Aillet Stadium.”
Bower coached at Southern Miss for 17 seasons, the last 12 years as a member of CUSA. During those 12 years he led his team to 10 bowl games. The first year they went to a bowl game there were only 20 bowl games, only 40 teams made it. It was quite an achievement to play in a bowl game. Star players did not skip games back then. Now the majority of teams play in bowl games, players routinely pass on playing in bowl games. Heck we played against a team, in a bowl game, where the offensive plays were called by a member of the student body. Nobody cares about most bowl games now. But when Bower was going bowling most every year bowl games were a big deal.
Here are some of the teams Bower had to compete against during his time in CUSA: Louisville (ACC); TCU (Big 12); Cincinnati (Big East, now AAC); South Florida (Big East, now AAC); and Central Florida (AAC) defending national champions or so they say. Not to mention most of the AAC. Skip gets to play against UTEP, UTSA, Charlotte, Old Dominion, UAB. UAB even quit football and when they come back they smack us around like we just started playing the sport. CUSA in Bower’s day is no comparison to what is CUSA today.
USM finished in the Top 20 twice under Bower. The Top 20 twice! It is news when we even get a vote under Holtz. USM won 4 CUSA championships under Bower. Tech has no championships under Holtz, even in the watered-down mess that CUSA is.
In 12 CUSA seasons, Bower never had a losing record, never even had a .500 record in conference, 12 straight winning seasons overall and in conference. Holtz cannot claim any of this.
So we can stick with Holtz, who will be more than happy to retire here. We never have to worry about a big boy program taking him away. He would leave if given the opportunity, but nobody will ever give him that opportunity (see the South Florida years). Or we can cut our losses and take a chance on hiring the next hot, young coach who could win a championship or two and then bolt for a Power 5 job. Myself I would rather take our chances on becoming the next Central Florida or Houston. At least we could say we tried. A 14-0 season complaining we didn’t make the playoffs, trumps playing in a bowl game against a 3rd string QB or against an offensive coordinator from the student body.
It is time for Skip to go. He cannot win a conference title here. It is not in him. We owe it to our fans and players to strive for championships. It does not matter what regrets USM might or might not have. The situation USM was in is not comparative to our situation. They ran off a coach who could deliver conference championships and national rankings. We are looking for a coach who can deliver such results.
Whoa! Bulldog Tom you are off of D65's Christmas card list.
How dare you!!! Who are you to ask for a conference championship? Who are you to expect more than an occasional 9-win season and a bowl win? Besides, haven't you heard, Skip Holtz loves Ruston! But then, so does Leon Barmore and look how he did as coach....Barmore not only won conference championships, when we bothered to be in one, he won NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS! What does Barmore have to do with Holtz? Ummm….not a damn thing! back to the point:
Skip Holtz is who he is. His track record is to have a "stable" program. Don't rock the boat, don't take chances. Slow and steady. Like a captain of a cruise ship. Don't upset the passengers. What we want is a Captain Ernest Evans at the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Full speed ahead...go for it!
Holtz has gotten comfortable....TOO comfortable. He feels no pressure to actually advance the program. And why should he? Too many people, inside and outside of Tech, are patting him on the back and telling him he's doing a great job. No....he's done a "good" job up to this point, but he has hit a plateau, and "good" is not good enough.
It was just a question. Thanks for your thoughts. If you recall, he was fired because the fans felt he could no longer deliver the titles and he had a penchant for losing to UAB.
I'm guessing that all would not be forgiven with Skip had he beat Marshall a few years back in the CG. My position on Holtz's hiring are well documented here. I want what we all want. I'm just not sure that I trust the guys who can't structure ticket prices or keep concession stands stocked to hire a replacement that is going to do any better.
Just like our passing game whoas...the solutions are not simple.
Granted he did not win a championship the last four years he was at Southern Miss, but he did win 4 titles in 12 years while in CUSA. His record against UAB was a perfect 8-0. Went to 10 bowl games in his last 11 years, during an era where bowl games were much harder to come to than today. Today 6-6 gets you a bowl game, 5-7 might work if you are in a Power 5 conference. My point is there is no comparison to be made between Bower and Holtz. None whatsoever, Bower was an excellent coach, a victim of his own success.
As far as trusting our current administration to pick a coach with potential to win a championship, you are probably right. We would be better off with a qualified AD, no doubt about it. My Tech fandom started during the Oakes years. So that means Oakes, Dooley, Van de Velde and McClelland. Only football coach Dooley had a clue. When looking at that list it is a wonder we are not a NAIA school.
"We have played in 4 straight bowl games......" Sorry guys, this is NO accomplishment! Darn near every team in the nation gets a bowl game. Oh wait, Tech mishandled that one too, a few years ago. Making a bowl game doesn't mean anything anymore.
Just like the baseball team was celebrated for getting a record number of wins. Good for them, that isn't something that should be celebrated. They still missed the post season. We as fans need to tell the marketing department to quit making the university look like small struggling potatoes.
So it was. I must've misremembered. I also got close to Tech under the Oakes administration. I suppose I'm leery of the powers that be to do anything other than go out and get a coaches son who's do well and split (Dykes), do poorly and split (Dooley), or do just enough to keep from getting fired.
I like Dr. Guice. Always have. I think he's a real good man. But Dr. Guice should have woken up this morning with legitimate concerns about the state of our entire athletic program. But especially the one that pays the bills: Football. Holtz is killing the energy in the stadium, and I can't imagine that Dr. Guice isn't already hearing from local merchants about the poor attendance.
He needs to start anyone but JMar, his offense needs chunk plays and JMar can't deliver . We watched the paint dry last year and the bowl game wiped out memories I guess. If he doesn't make a change we will have 5000 people at the last game . We are stuck with him , we can only pray now . I like Aaron Allen and would be playing him now !
Folks, LA Tech CAN'T SCORE. That's why the games are boring. With J'Mar at QB, we don't have anyone that can score TD's. Against FBS competition, J'Mar has thrown 7 TD passes and 5 INT's. He's averaging 219 yds per game in the air.
This season, LA Tech has averaged a whopping (said in jest) 21.75 pts per game against its 4 FBS competitors. That lack of point production will get you beat almost every week in FBS college football.
I really do try to take a step back and look around me here in Georgia. I try to remember that in general, nobody notices. BUT when we only score 7 points in the whole game against UAB in our own house. That is something I can't get past. I have been disappointed in close losses and struggles where there was some fight.
I take conceited pride in what Louisiana Tech football generally means...and that is/was no opponent will have an easy time in our place. There were times back in the WAC where the opponent was just better than us but there was generally a fight (except for that Hawaii game).
Nothing will change right now, but it has been a tough Monday.
That is the one point that I see that can actually get the ball rolling towards change. Mayor Ronny Walker has went all out to make the Ruston-Tech relationship a symbiotic relationship and has pushed, and begged, and pleaded to make sure Ruston Merchants support Tech. There are more hotels coming, there are more eateries coming, there is more coming and they are expecting a true college town environment. Skip Holtz and Tmac are killing that, they killed it last year which was the most promising year we have had for our merchants in a while.
There is a much bigger picture here than just our disappointment as fans, it is affecting cash flow, and money talks!
And with all the money Ruston has out and is planning to put out, we need the tax revenue badly.
I'm Listening to Holtz on the afternoon show on 97.7. i don't think Tech wins another game based on how Holtz feels. get him out of Ruston.
Anybody that watched Saturday knows this team is dead in the water. The defense literally just gave up in the 4th quarter. Can’t say I blame them much, as they were getting no help from the offense. None. And I know everybody is hoping for change; that’s a fools hope. Holtz will double down on the same mindless and predictable offense with a QB who is completely demoralized and apathetic about being out there. UAB had read the scouting report, and every time Smith handed the ball off, the DE was nearly looking the ball carrier in the face. They knew there was no chance of Smith keeping it. And there’s not going to be any change anytime soon in leadership. Welcome to Tech football for the foreseeable future.
Here’s a question some of you in the media can ask Holtz.....
“Coach, since the beginning of your tenure here in 2013, with the lone exception of 2016, we have lost a game at home to a team we were favored to win against. Most of them were either marquee matchups like Southern Miss/Tulane or very highly attended games such as Northwestern in 2014. Why is it that under your leadership, your teams consistently under perform at home?”
In reality, J’mar probably is out best option....which means we have done a terrible job of recruiting and identifying talent. There are probably at least a half dozen or so Qb’s from the DFW area that would have made better Qb’s ....most of them probably ended their careers after high school.
Until he allows someone else to take every snap for at least one half of a game, I will not except his excuse that J’Mar is our best option. Who knows, the o line might block for a guy who wants to be in there, even if he isn’t the best.
If our o-Line is choosing not to block for any QB, we’ve got issues far deeper than the depth chart.
I don’t think that’s the case. The only guy behind J’Mar with any chance of performing better is Allen and I don’t know that it’s worth losing his redshirt.
If we had a better option, he would have had some snaps by now...the fact that we haven’t seen a change is very telling. Very disappointing but....it’s who we are at this time.
Higgins was the right choice although many fans were screaming for J’mar after the Arkansas game...Holtz has his faults, no doubt, if we had a better option at Qb he would be playing.
Part of the development should be to let them in the game when it's out of reach.
Draw your own conclusions, but please do some research before making a decision...it could be eye opening.
other than the two one year rented Qbs, Holtz hasn’t recruited any good qb out of high school in his 6 years here.
True. Holtz is doing far more damage to his recruiting chances than he even realizes. Why would any high school QB choose to come to LA Tech if he's NEVER --and I mean, NEVER-- going to get to play a down of football? What kind of "QB development" is that?
It's no wonder we've had 3 QB's transfer out in the last 15 months or so. They knew Skip Holtz is too stupid to give them any playing time, even in a back up role. So they decided to go get STARTING QB jobs elsewhere.
If you go back and listen to Jaylon's talk at the podium in the first press conference (8/28 I believe) of this season he clearly stated that the goal for this season is to WIN THE CONFERENCE TITLE. The team's goal this year is win the C-USA title.
Jim Haslett refused to bench Aaron Brooks for the backup (Jake Delhomme) bc Brooks was the best option. Delhomme took Carolina to Super Bowl a couple years later. Haslett later admitted he was playing the wrong guy, and that he didn’t know what he had in Delhomme or he would’ve made a change.
I’m not saying we have a Delhomme, but the point is we won’t know as long as J’Mar Smith is still on the field stinking it up.
If Smith is truly the best option we have, then 7 wins is what our ceiling probably is. Holtz is in year 6; we shouldn’t be having conversations about this. Seriously
Players in locker room were bad mouthing J’Mar..with J’Mar within earshot. Found this out today from a good source with locker room access..
Football players aren’t stupid. They see the same film we do. They see the missed passes. The hesitant runs. The lack of confidence. Everyone with eyes sees it.
When J’Mar came off the field after another 3 and out, he walked straight to the bench and sat down by HIMSELF. This is not a leader. Even skip wasn’t talking to him Saturday night.
Sounds like our issues are deeper than one player.
You had to really stretch to come up with anything positive about our program in a previous post.
We are known to have good talent and we are known to send guys to the NFL. Yes, we have put our fair share of players in the NFL, yet we cannot win championships in the terrible CUSA. Why is that true?
Plus we are not a scandal plagued program (like Florida State Criminoles). So most our players behave as they should, they are not criminals. This is not something that should be celebrated, but the minimum expectation.
We have good clock management, unlike the former LSU coach. Again isn't this something we should expect? Is all we can celebrate is meeting the minimum expectations?
Do I want to have 10+ wins every season? Of course. Guess what happens when we get 10+ wins? Coaches get phone calls and they jump...So you believe, like many others, it is better to average playing in lower level bowl games than to have to replace a successful head coach every few years.
We will never be allowed by the powers in Louisiana to rise to the level of the LSU program. It is probably unrealistic that Tech will ever be on the same level as LSU. They play in the most powerful league in college football, occasionally playing for national championships. I would be happy if we were to rise to the level of Marshall, Western Kentucky or Florida Atlantic (the last three teams to win the CUSA championship). Heck I would be happy if we could beat UAB, who didn't even have a team three years ago.
There are a lot of positives with Tech. You forgot to mention that we never late in arriving at the stadium for the game, although we didn't seem ready to play on a few occasions. Also, every game all of our players are wearing the same uniforms and helmets. And, our equipment guys always bring footballs to our games, instead of bringing basketballs and javelins.
I guess if you set expectations at the lowest levels you are never disappointed. I think expectations should be higher. Playing in a low level bowl game every season isn't that big of a deal as most teams in college football do the same thing. Many coaches who achieve at that level now get fired for that lack of success.
Everyone thought Jalen Hurts was the best option for Alabama until Saban pulled him in the NCG. Takes some real bowling balls to do something like that... something our coach will never do.
Aaron has played in one game, that leaves 3 . For me those 3 are Southern Miss, Western Kentucky and conference championship game . Just my opinion . If he sits JMar I doubt he could come back from it .
I agree with you. JMar is just not the guy, and he has had his shot. BUT, none of us (to my knowledge) have access to the coaching staff, nor the locker room or practice sessions. We don't know who is behind. After watching what I have been able to find film-wise on YouTube, my choice would Aaron Allen. Highly mobile, tight spirals. He reminds me of our version of Michael Vick, AND you could drop Allen into the existing game plan(s) and he would flourish, even enhance it.
There was a comment on the LaTechAthletics Facebook page by "Guy Davis" hinting that Tech would be getting a different QB at least by next year, "if not sooner". From what I could tell, Guy is JMar's Uncle/Dad/Guardian. And Guy makes a very good point: Its a team.
Last thing, especially to whoever keeps downvoting/giving me the "negative reputation". Like Coach Mike Bundy said in his famous speech: "I'm a man", consider what criticism you all are slinging out on this forum and Facebook, etc. and dial it back a few notches. These young men, including JMar, including our O-Line, put in a lot of work, self sacrifice to represent US. IF any of you have been a walk on or scholarship athlete @ Tech then you understand.
Be supportive and encouraging and less Keyboard All-Star Coach..
I had noticed that at one of our offensive lineman was not suited up for the game. Motes? Anyone else note this. Another, Shipley, kept getting hurt so he might have been a walking wounded. Any others we might not have known about? I'm not making excuses, just wondering. We knew about Dancy and saw the cast on Tucker's hand. He finally put Tucker in any for a couple of quick pitches, the first of which worked for a good gain, but the second for only a couple. Those of you that noticed that Cox took the one snap also saw one of McKnight's better runs. So we don't know what's going on. It looked to me like Holtz was just trying to patch together an offensive unit and hope for the best. Maybe Allen was gimpy, too. This shouldn't be happening with 100 scholarships.
I'm not surprised to hear this at all. I'm sure the players have had enough of poor QB play. Skip Holtz will be the absolute LAST person in America to recognize that J'Mar ain't cutting it. Well, Holtz and D65. And DogsWin. They've been J'Mar's biggest defenders. ;)
I'm suspicious of you. You come in from literally nowhere, with only 10 posts --hardly any before this week-- and now you're preaching to us about being "supportive and encouraging". We've seen this act before. Methinks you have a some kind of personal connection/agenda with the team or the coaches that you're protecting. Please feel free to fully disclose and share your connection/agenda with us so we can discuss it.
I just found out about this board from another member this season, and I have not been able to post for some techincal reason. I just got the admins to fix it, so here we are baby.
Sure, I tell you a little about me so you can criticize and go negative on me as well. As Coach Bundy famously said, "I'm a man".
My grandfather graduated Tech. Most of my family has graduated Tech. My mom's side of the family is old school Ruston, her grandfather owned a haberdashery (The Hub) in downtown Ruston. As for me, I was Orientation Leader, SGA, Cheerleader(thus the Rama Jama :)) during AL Williams days, and Karl Malone days. I reveal this to show that my blood runs deep in Red and COLUMBIA blue. So what, doesn't matter who I am or any of us are really. What matters is are you here to tear down or build up and support our guys.
I WISH I had inside knowledge of the locker room or the coaching staff or the athletic department. I don't. DO YOU HOGDAWG? As far as I know we are all looking in. It EASY to sit outside of the malestrom and criticize. No one more than HCSH, QB1, and the others know when/where they missed a play. THEY WATCH FILM OF THEMSELVES THE NEXT DAY. In front of their teammates.
Enough for now. I care about our Dawgs and I want them to win just as much as any of you.
