Westin Elliott - Redshirt?
This may have been mentioned before. Danny K. mentioned last night that Westin was being held out of games so he could redshirt? Is this true and I've missed it completely?
-
Re: Westin Elliott - Redshirt?
Heard that. I just wonder was Danny saying that based on confirmation with staff.
-
Re: Westin Elliott - Redshirt?
I’m not sure why Tech would be redshirting a junior (at least I think he’s a junior based on an internet roster I saw). It’s not like we can play him for 3-4 more years. As it is now it seems like the only year he may get (?) is his fifth year and by then who knows what could happen. I think it’s far more likely that Holtz is using the redshirt excuse as a way to keep Elliot off the field and there by not reveal that he’s a ‘rock star buster’ and challenge J’Mar for the starting role.
-
Re: Westin Elliott - Redshirt?
Hey. Nate Cox took another snap. That's two for the year I believe. It looked like they were trying to fool FAU into thinking it was going to be a throw back to J'Mar so they could run the counter. It didn't work.
-
Re: Westin Elliott - Redshirt?
I said this on another thread. Didn’t even think about him being a junior, I believe.
-
Re: Westin Elliott - Redshirt?
He also has 4 games to play in w/out losing shirt
-
Re: Westin Elliott - Redshirt?
Yes the announcers on the TV said Cox is the “lost helmet QB” and comes in quickly to take the snap/hand off.
Then most shockingly they said Westin Elliot our number 1 backup QB is a redshirt this year!

Since Weston Elliott hasn't played a down this fall, won't he be in the position to play in our last 3 regular season games and our bowl game, and still not lose his red shirt? I think so. I think that's how it works, right?

Holtz hinted at that earlier in the year

So Elliott stays to sit on the bench next year ? I would leave there is no way I watch the offense and don't think I am a better option!

I think the reason behind redshirting him is so we can have him the year after J'Mar leaves.

Gives you a one year bridge to your next quarterback. Or maybe he beats out J'Mar later this year and starts for the next two years. Maybe he just gives you a veteran backup to Aaron Allen that first year after J'Mar...who knows.

Re: Westin Elliott - Redshirt?
Allen has it and needs to start in 2019 but it will never happen .
-
Re: Westin Elliott - Redshirt?
I'm pretty confident we will begin to see Elliott on the field beginning with either the Rice or Southern Miss game.
-
Re: Westin Elliott - Redshirt?
Coach said after Southern game that if J'Mar hadn't gotten hurt - Westin would have come in - but the plan was to go with Allen if the game was out of reach.
-
Re: Westin Elliott - Redshirt?
You know your QB is not good when the announcers of your game get into a conversation regard the backup........that literally never happens.
So, everyone sees it other than the head coach.
-
Re: Westin Elliott - Redshirt?
Not sure why Westin would sit another year, if he truly believes he has an opportunity to win the job in spring - maybe; otherwise who could blame him for not transferring like Abraham. Gonna sit a year either way. If Holtz does give Allen & Elliot a shit I’m guessing one of the two bolts. If Smith was getting it done then this isn’t a discussion. I certainly hope our coaches expect better play but feel like their best option to finish this year is Smith with hopes that Elliot & Allen will be viable options next year

Some of this crappola needs to be in the private The Hall of Fame BoaRD forum.
We are 6-2, have 4 games left with hopeful improvement to come, and are bowl qualified.

You're right PawDawg according to what Skip said in the radio show today. Did any one listen to the 97.7 radio show today @ 6pmCST? Skip talked about Elliott. Said he has been getting more reps in practice, and alluded that they are grooming him to get series where they can in the last four games. (that's what I took away)
So I think that we will see Elliott come in when necessary in the next four games. If current QB1 is competitive at all, this is a good thing. Competition makes us better in football, business, everything.

Thanks for pointing out how right I am. I get that a lot. ;)
The last four games mantra from "Coach Speak" is the norm. He will insert him when it won't make himself or JMar look bad. Remember how Craft would get 10 and Scott would get 110? Holtz was like, "Scott did a great job in mop up duty and Craft is our starter."

Re: Westin Elliott - Redshirt?
Are the four games limited the regular season or are conference championship, bowl and playoff games included counted in the four games?
I am assuming it is just the regular season and the postseason does not count either way,

Four games period, including post season which is just one for us. The general consensus it that Elliot will see time in the Rice, USM, and WKU games. If we are getting killed as expected this weekend, he will play at Starkville. If no Starkville, then possibly the bowl game.
-
Re: Westin Elliott - Redshirt?
Theoretically, this could force some interesting decisions for teams if a starter at a thin position gets hurt and an extremely talented redshirt has already burned his four games. Do you play a redshirt in all four games to get experience or do you limit him to to two or three games depending on the postseason situation?
These questions are not specific to Tech.

Why is anyone questioning redshirting Elliot? If he’s not getting significant PT, why not redshirt him??

J’Mar was not on the field when Cox took a snap. J’Mar had to come off the field bc his helmet popped off during the previous play. It actually was ripped off by a defender right in front of the ref.. Not sure why there was no flag thrown.

I felt the refs went easy on them. They deserved at least 100 yards in penalties.

I don't think that is the question now. He has four games to play now and can keep his shirt. If he plays at Miss St he will only have 3 left. If not, he has 4 left, which includes a bowl game.

Not sure I'm buying that right now. Skip just isn't a QB change type of dude. Looks to me as a way to placate the masses whilst hoping J'Mar recovers from his downward spiral. I mean, if Skip thinks Elliot is better but is sitting him for four games (since UAB, when the total cluster started), then he is rolling the dice big time. Think about it: we were in a position to lose the last two games, all to save a year for Westin Elliot? Doesn't make sense.
The only way we see Elliot is if we lose our ass. Skip ain't gonna pull the trigger in a close game no matter how bad the starter plays.

Once we lost at home to UAB, it was a moot point who played at QB. Skip knew then we wouldn’t be playing in a Conference Championship, so there’s no reason to burn a red shirt at that point. Holtz was hedging on Smith not making any mistakes and making just enough plays to pull out the win against UTEP and FAU, with the help of the defense of course.
I think the right move is to start Elliot against Rice unless Smith really steps up his game this week. At least for the first 3-4 series to see what he’s capable of doing. He may bomb big time, then again he may light the world on fire. Never know until you try.

Me too. If he does, I think it’s in hand the ball off garbage time. That is, if we are capable of putting up enough points against Rice to get to garbage time.

I see Elliot getting a series, maybe two.
On the other hand, part of me wonders if that relationship with Smith headed south after the UAB game. There is definitely a rift there.

I've thought about that. I'm not sure our definition of significant is the same as Holtz' will be. Take Rice for example. Assuming the game is well at hand at the half he should rest/protect the rock star, then give the rest of the reps to Elliot. Same with the other two regular season games. That's my head and heart thinking. My Holtz radar says he will play JMar up until the last series then stick Elliot in to run the delayed hand off for 3 plays or until time expires.
-
Re: Westin Elliott - Redshirt?
Who really thinks there will be garbage time against Rice? We barely squeaked by UTEP and really only pulled away from UTSA late.
-
Re: Westin Elliott - Redshirt?
If Elliot were better, he'd be playing. He needs to get some snaps, but if y'all think we're getting close to changing QBs, you're going to be disappointed. J'Mar will finish the year out and we'll be at 8-9 wins. He'll be the starter next year, then Allen will take over.

That’s about what I think will happen. Even if he gets to play several minutes, I think it will be ball control football at its finest.

Nobody said that. Most of us are just hoping Holtz will do what he said he was going to do during the postgame comments of Southern. GIve our #2 some reps. Elliot could go .950 with 10 TDs and no turnovers in the last three regular season games, but J'Mar will be the starter for the next 18 games or so.

Would there be a good reason if UAB were to drop one unexpectedly and still have MTSU on their schedule?

I agree with starting Elliot against Rice. We always give the opponent a TD or two, don't panic, and come back, so no harm. After watching Arron Allen's high school highlights, I think he is the true dual threat, but then again we are not at practice watching QBs.
A comment made by JMar's uncle/father/guardian (not sure as he has a different last name than JMar) still sticks with me. When people on FB were coming down on JMar after UAB, the comment was made that Tech "would be getting a new QB next year for sure, if not sooner". Don't know what that means, and you file it in the rumor mill, but when a person who has the influence level of a parent is speaking about a key player, you tend to listen.
(Sunshine Alert): Other comment that stuck with me from Monday's radio show on 97.7: Skip made the comment that JMar has done well at protecting the ball this year and "that's a big deal" to Skip. He went on to say its not always the play you MAKE, but the play you DONT MAKE (as in INT), and Skip has a good point there.
This weekend: 24-21 Tech pulls off the upset. I think we will do it. They guys "circle the wagons" and play pissed when they are on the road.

I don’t hate Smith. I think he has potential, but something has happened to him. He isn’t the same player he was in 2016, not by a long shot. I think he has the talent to play the position, but he’s to uptight and indecisive, and I think that’s a coaching problem. Multiple times this year he’s had opportunities to run for a first down and beyond and he doesn’t. It’s like his legs won’t work, or he’s been specifically told not to do so. If I’m Holtz, 4-5 times a game I’m calling a designed run for him. Like a 3 step drop, tuck it and run. I think it would help keep the defense honest. And yes, he has been excellent protecting the ball, but he’s so uptight about it, he can’t make the routine play for fear of throwing an INT. That’s why half of his deep balls are underthrown IMO.

For the record and nothing against Allen or any young man given that label but I hate Dual Threat quarterbacks and I really hate them at La Tech.

-
Re: Westin Elliott - Redshirt?
But isn’t that what most people agree on? If smith was allowed to be a true dual threat guy, it would open our offense more and we would be better? Driskel, Luke, Maybe even Higgins were more dual threat than J’Mar has been.
-
Re: Westin Elliott - Redshirt?
I'm not sure how to get an accurate read on J'Mar's ypc because the sacks confound the data. He's not a dynamic runner but he is more than adequate for 4-5 designed runs (not rpo's) per game imo. Our offense simply isn't good enough without that wrinkle. We can keep getting mad but it ain't going to change without an schematic change. That seems obvious to me.
-
Re: Westin Elliott - Redshirt?
J'Mar had a rush for 58 against UAB and a rush for 43 against UTEP. Might consider using him more because our offense struggled in both of those games.
-
Re: Westin Elliott - Redshirt?
I don’t get why we don’t. He isn’t a bad runner when he is determined to run.
-
Re: Westin Elliott - Redshirt?
He's a afraid to get hit. A wuss. He "runs on eggshells" as the old saying goes. Horrible, because he's chickenshit. And yes, this offense needs a QB who will tuck and run, both in called plays, and when a play breaks down and the field opens up. Smith won't do either.
-

That's what I've been saying - He was much better last year. I'm not sure if these numbers include sacks - but Driskel, Higgisn & J'mar (2017) had a better average than he does this year.

A little stronger description than I had in mind, but he does not run like a football player. Some of that is probably due to Holtz coaching it out of him.

This is exactly correct. Guy has no vision at all when he does decide to run. One of the best examples was the first drive of the bowl game last year after the fumble recovery. He decided to tuck and run and had a ton of space right in the middle of the field, but instead made a hard left toward the sideline where there were 2 or 3 defenders waiting on him. Turned a 15-yard gain into 3 yards. Have seen the same happen several times this year as well.

That's because he was trying to run out of bounds so he wouldn't have to take a hit.

No need for that kind of language for a guy trying to lead the Bulldogs. Yes he could do better but don't use that kind of language toward him. That was just unacceptable.

Our offense simply isn't good enough without that wrinkle. We can keep getting mad but it ain't going to change without an schematic change. That seems obvious to me.
We either don't run RPOs, or J'Mar can't read. There is absolutely no way the D-Line stays on J'Mar every single snap. It doesn't make any sense, either logically or statistically.

Re: Westin Elliott - Redshirt?
Obviously everyone on here is smarter than our coaches, but I did want to take a second to point out to everyone that a RPO is a run/pass option, where the line run blocks and the quarterback has the option to either hand it off or hit a quick passing route before the linemen get too far downfield to be flagged for ineligible receiver downfield. A read option is a run play where the quarterback has the option to hand it off or pull it and run it himself. This is the type of play that you guys (and probably everyone else in the stands) want J'Mar to keep the ball and run on. We run both types of plays, but since the first game, we haven't passed much on the RPO plays that have been called. Carry on.

Many RPOs, including those in the offense we run**, include both a read option and a pass option. It's essentially the new triple option: give to the back, keep, or pass. Not all RPOs include the QB keeper option, and maybe ours don't, because J'Mar never seems to pull.
**By we, I mean the high school where I teach and coach, not the Bulldogs.

Until he lowers his shoulder and takes on a tackler to gain extra yards...he's chickenshit. His lousy play is unacceptable.
BTW, when I first typed that, I paused and thought, some snowflake is gonna gripe about that term. I changed it to something less descriptive. And then I thought, no, it best describes his unwillingness to act like a football player. Nothing special about him. Would you accept Dancy, McKnight, Tucker, hook sliding to avoid contact? Well, maybe you would...

Looks like your 5,000th post is coming up soon, 65. I'm sure it will be equally as brilliant.

Re: Westin Elliott - Redshirt?
I look forward to seeing what Elliott can do.

Re: Westin Elliott - Redshirt?
Our coach talked about replacing defensive players, but has never talked about replacing offensive players.

B/c he has his head up his ass. Just like he was the only person that thought Craft was better than Scott, he is the only one who still J/Mar is a Rockstar. At this point, I just want to try someone different. If he is the best we have, then they have failed to recruit a QB to Ruston. Our starter is NOT a D1 starting QB. Yes, he has a cannon of an arm, but he his inaccuracy is huge. I just don't understand why we don't try someone different. The defense was on the field the majority of the game. They are TIRED.
I'm convinced our coach is content and he has no pressure whatsoever to take the program up a notch. Receiving a Gatorade bath after the 6th win of the season says it all. Especially after barely beating a terrible team to do it. We act like we have never been to a bowl before.
-
Re: Westin Elliott - Redshirt?
Rooster, I looked at my wife and said, “we are a junior high team at best.” We became bowl eligible and ended FAU’s home win streak, and that was a huge accomplishment for this team. If any of us was expected to complete 8 or more work assignments per year and regularly aimed for 6 we would all be fired.
-
Re: Westin Elliott - Redshirt?
Well, now Elliott can play in the last 4 games we have and still redshirt for this year. I don't know if this was the plan or not but it looks like it could work if that is what the coaches have been after. We'll see.
-
Re: Westin Elliott - Redshirt?
I don’t know what good all this Elliott talk will do. First off Holtz repeatedly dubbed J’Mar a rock star and has defended him all season so far. Everyone else has taken a turn at being at fault for the team not being better, but not so much #8. I’ve thought several times to watch practice to see if Elliott even gets an rep time. I can’t say but I seriously doubt it. I mean as bad as J’Mar is he needs as much practice time as is allowed.
Maybe just maybe all this redshirt talk is legit and Elliott is a really good QB and we’ll see him take over as the game count gets right... my fingers are crossed because I’m sick of how horrible J’Mar is.
-
Re: Westin Elliott - Redshirt?
JMar hasnt been called that since last year. Probably for good reason.
-
Re: Westin Elliott - Redshirt?
I’m almost certain Holtz called him a rock star as this season began.
-
Re: Westin Elliott - Redshirt?
1. Keeping J'Mar has QB next game is an act of greed. Somehow we won 6 games so far. Skip better not think he doesn't require a change.
2. I have blind hope Skip intends to play or start Elliot. Otherwise why would Westin not have played last night? No way we will have scrap time in each of the last 4 games. So he could have played Westin last night with 0 risk of losing the shirt.
-
Re: Westin Elliott - Redshirt?
4 minutes is not the answer for any of them but JMar!
-
Re: Westin Elliott - Redshirt?
The only reason I can see that Skip left Smith in the game last night is that he was hoping he would get hurt and he could replace him without losing face.

Glad you said that, and not me.
But, the only way Smith gets hurt is tripping getting off the bus.
