Digital First's hostile takeover attempt of Gannett
If you think Gannett's quality in Louisiana is bad now watch what happens if Digital First ultimately succeeds in its takeover attempt. Gannett's board is attempting to fend DF off, but it may just be a matter of time before DF succeeds.

Re: Digital First's hostile takeover attempt of Gannett
This is what Digital First did to the Denver Post:
"MNG is mostly owned by Alden Global Capital, a New York-based hedge fund known for buying distressed properties. It has been investing in newspapers for the last decade. While the newspaper industry has struggled in recent years, critics say MNG cuts deeper than most of its rivals."
Still, it is unlikely that news of the acquisition will be met with celebrations in Gannett’s newsrooms across the country, as MNG’s aggressive cost-cutting tactics have earned derision from plenty of journalists.
MNG found itself embroiled in a dispute last year with employees at the Denver Post, whose editorial board wrote a blistering piece calling out the “vultures” at Alden.
The Wall Street Journal was the first to report on Digital First’s plans to buy Gannett. When the news broke Sunday night, journalists across the industryexpressed alarm, bracing themselves for yet more instability in small and local newrooms.
As longtime media critic Jim Romenesko put it: “Haven’t newspaper employees suffered enough?”
Niraj Warikoo, staff writer for the Gannett-owned Detroit Free Press tweeted: “If DFM takes over Gannett, it will basically be the end of the American newspaper industry.”

Re: Digital First's hostile takeover attempt of Gannett
This is just another nail in the coffin for print media. It will all eventually turn into websites like ESPN, Fox and CNN with fluff that can be transposed from one region to another with no reasonable amount of local content whatsoever.
Re: Digital First's hostile takeover attempt of Gannett
The coverage we get from the 2 area Gannett products is so poor, who cares?

The local papers have been dead to me for years. This is more or less reading their proverbial obituary.

Our decision makers must care. They continue to kiss ass like they are old school Wiley Hilburn. We give them an INCREDIBLE amount of valuable sponsorship each year and get NOTHING in return. This has been happening for at least 5 years. Probably more. This is one that we can't blame our AD for.
Re: Digital First's hostile takeover attempt of Gannett
If they take out Gannett and the result is a middle of the road editorial position vs the current liberal one, then it's a positive. Heck, I might even take a look. Beyond that it really just doesn't matter anymore.
Re: Digital First's hostile takeover attempt of Gannett
I just want to know why a company like Gannett is allowed to own approximately 1100 newspapers (most of which are city's flagship newspapers) across the country and approximately 300 in the UK. I'm no lawyer, so I'll ask. Is there some sort of antitrust law to keep a monopoly like this from occurring?

I see Cory Diaz is down in Lafayette covering ULL.

he sent a tweet about going to help the short-handed staff down there. I almost replied: Tech fans would have never known.
Re: Digital First's hostile takeover attempt of Gannett
When are we going to start calling them UL like our leaders have given the nod to? They deserve to be recognized for what they accomplished. It is OFFICIAL Just ask all the UL presidents.

Any kin to Manny? I think I've heard the name but can't place it.
Re: Digital First's hostile takeover attempt of Gannett
Good for Cory, no hard feelings here. Helping out the company, young guy trying to move up.

True dat! Gannett is a liberal rag.
Re: Digital First's hostile takeover attempt of Gannett
The Gannett Louisiana mothership in Lafayette asked for volunteers to help shore up THEIR Lafayette coverage. Diaz accepted. Watson told me he turned them down.
Let's see now on National Signing Day, Shreveport had 1.5 writers (Just can't count Roy Lang as a full . . .). Monroe had 1. and Lafayette had at least 2.
Can you see the trend here? Northern Louisiana universities depending on Gannett for coverage must start figuring out alternatives to getting the word out.
I like the Old Dominion model where they hired fulltime a highly respected sportswriter in the Norfolk market and he churns out ODU stories daily. His stories are picked up by the local media or read on the ODU websites.

I like the idea & it makes sense to do to get our story in front of the public. But I don't see Tech/Tommy doing it.
