Early Voting Starts Tomorrow
Attention fellow Louisiana folks! Sept 28 - Oct 5 is early voting. Oct 12 is election day. A lot on the ballot, including guvnar!
For my fellow East Natchitoches peeps, I am running for Parish Council District 3. Would appreciate a vote (or two).
Last night the Chamber hosted a candidates' forum, parish president and council seats, and one fellow running for president is a self-proclaimed socialist. Young fellow named Nicholas Wright. His answers to questions were...well, interesting. (I'm being kind). He also wants the name of the city of Natchitoches to be changed to "Nicholas Town." Says it's too confusing for both the city and the parish to be named the same. His platform? Free everything!! :rolleyes4:

Re: Early Voting Starts Tomorrow
Best of luck to you. I got several races here at home I and vested in an hope for positive outcomes!

I think he is Jewish, by birth, i.e. born to a Jewish family, and up-bringing. But if you live in the Cane River community, the Isle Brevelle, you tend to migrate toward St. Augustine Catholic Church and its influence on the local community.
Some background...
Augustin Metoyer was the first born of 11 children to the union of the slave woman, Marie Therese Coin-coin (pronounced "quan quan"), and the Frenchman Pierre Metoyer. He, like all his siblings, was born into slavery. Eventually he was manumitted, thanks to Pierre Metoyer, and secured a Spanish land grant of 1,000 acres in 1793. As did his younger brother Louis Metoyer, whose holdings is now the famous Melrose Plantation. Augustin grew his holdings, eventually amassing 6,000 acres and holding 197 slaves of his own. By the 1830 census he was the richest man in Louisiana and one of the wealthiest in the nation.
In 1803, after Louisiana became part of the US, Augustin Metoyer donated land and had a church built, Roman Catholic, as thanks to the French, but more so, the Spanish influence, it was the only religion in that region. In 1829 Rome recognized the church as an official parish and a priest was permanently assigned to it. St. Augustine Catholic Church, Melrose, Louisiana is the oldest Catholic Parish in the US "of, by, and for people of color."
Today, it remains the center of the community. Thus! if you live in the Isle Brevelle you cannot help but be a part of St. Augustine Church.

Good luck dawg80! I’d certainly vote for you if I lived in ENP. We’re working on the LA-1226 & 1227 for LADOTD right now and would love to come back and chip seal and fog seal some Parish Roads for you guys.
Hoping you’re successful, and if so, let’s eat some BBQ and I’ll show you some inventive ways (like we do in Texas) to stretch your dollars over many more miles.

Re: Early Voting Starts Tomorrow
I won with 59% of the vote. My vote total of about 1,700 is more than some of the other districts' combined vote total. Each district has about 8,000 people each (5 districts). So, it was a good result.
I had to battle the local media who got behind my opponent. They offered anything he wanted in terms of free advertising. The online Natchitoches Parish Journal was deleting posts that did not support my opponent, on their blog. My opponent could post articles and comments and the ability to comment on those was disabled. But, fortunately, their efforts backfired. Many people picked up on the one-sided media and rallied around me.
The NPJ did the same thing to John Richmond, candidate for parish president. He garnered the most votes and is in a runoff with the NPJ's selected candidate Lee Waskom. Mr. Richmond is a Tech graduate...civil engineering. I hope he wins the runoff.
Politics is a dirty game. It's also funny how people who wouldn't have given me the time of day a couple of months ago are suddenly seeking me out. I changed my affiliation to "No Party" but now both major parties are actively pursuing me to "join" them. The state organizations have been calling and sending letters.
The Natchitoches Parish government takes in $26 million in annual revenue, from taxes and state "transfers." The percentage that goes to large salaries and "goofy stuff" is amazing. The budget is 45 pages. If I had been elected king, I could increase services, improve the roads, and return about half back to taxpayers. The waste!
And this is very typical of any and every government body...local, state, and federal.

Re: Early Voting Starts Tomorrow
I hope you can make a difference too. The political establishment in this country is the biggest threat to our freedom that exists. The NPJ sounds like it's nothing more than a typical propaganda distributor for the establishment.
The People have spoken. Give em hell, Dawg80!

Re: Early Voting Starts Tomorrow
Thanks all!
And, I hope ALL the Abraham voters join with ALL the Rispone voters and let's get that sorry SOS John Bel out of office! Louisiana is lagging behind the rest of the country, left at the station as the Trump Express Train rolled on.
POS Edwards boasts of "balancing the state budget" but he did that by accepting many $millions of new federal hand-outs. Our economy has tanked under Edwards, which is ridiculous given how well the country is doing.
-
Re: Early Voting Starts Tomorrow
He also boasts about the first teacher pay raise which is total BS. He played a shell game with the money.
I may do what several of my Vitter hating friends did in the last election that put Edwards in in the first place. Rispone is a POS.
That said...
Thanks for being a public servant rather than a politician. I know where your heart is.

Re: Early Voting Starts Tomorrow
Well, early voting starts Saturday for the runoffs...
Ole Jon Bell Edwards is back in Natchitoches today. Third time this month. Tells me he is running scared, his internal polling has him behind, or maybe within the margin of error. His campaign is trying to shore up his base. He'll carry the city of Natchitoches. Lib dems always do. This is a "give us money" woe-is-us city. But, the numbers must not be as over-whelming as they were hoping.
The campaign for Parish President, by one of the candidates(Lee Waskom) and his operatives, has gotten nasty. The online NP Journal is all in for Waskom such that they only allow pro-Waskom and anti-Richmond articles and comments to be posted. I am supporting fellow Tech grad John Richmond.
Also supporting Ardoin for Sec of State.
-
Re: Early Voting Starts Tomorrow
I think Edwards will win by 5 points.
We have a very weak candidate who can't energize his base. Am I wrong to think that O&G is not supporting the "conservative" candidate the way they should?
-
Re: Early Voting Starts Tomorrow
-
Re: Early Voting Starts Tomorrow
I was on board with Abraham. Rispone doesn't do it for me. I didn't vote in the last election because I didn't like Vitter. I'm on the fence on whether or not I vote in this one. Rispone hasn't done anything to earn my vote or change my opinion of him.
-
Re: Early Voting Starts Tomorrow
No vote is a vote for Edwards, just like it was 4 years ago.
-
Re: Early Voting Starts Tomorrow
Edwards is just another tax & spend lib. You might remember 4 years ago he threatened to end everything if his huge tax increases weren't passed. He even said he might have to shut down LSU football. At least he knows how to motivate a large portion of the voter base.
Louisiana is dead last in job increases, even as the nation continues to enjoy record levels of employment. Thanks to JBE.

I didn't want to vote for Vitter either, but our weak ass Louisiana GOP is so bad we keep getting bad candidates...Rispone, Vitter, Jindal, etc..
Our state is so screwed up, one more term of Edwards won't hurt more, but with the super majority we could change so much.

So maybe a no vote is a vote for better candidates in the future. Abraham was a superior candidate to Rispone in ever way.

That's sort of where i am at. A vote for Rispone means I get him again next election if he wins this one. Four more years of Edwards is no good, but at least next time maybe there will be some new blood.

Next time we get another dud voted in by the voters south of I10

Re: Early Voting Starts Tomorrow
Edwards is absolutely killing job creation in Louisiana. I'm very connected to the industrial construction industry in our state, and I personally know of four huge plant expansions that were cancelled in Louisiana and instead moved to Texas due to policies that Edwards instituted. We're talking billions of dollars in construction and thousands of construction and permanent jobs. Four more years of his policies will set us back to a point that we'll struggle to ever overcome.
Edwards is as big of an establishment hack as they come. Rispone is an outsider that isn't a part of the political machine in Louisiana. I implore everyone to consider giving him a chance. He can't possibly be any worse for our state than Edwards has been.
-
Re: Early Voting Starts Tomorrow
More good news for the national economy, unemployment rate continues at historic lows, 3.6%, which is considered better than "full employment." But not in poor ole Louisiana... JBE is supported by, and thus he is beholden to, the old political machine that dates back to Earl K. Long, Russell Long, Edwin Edwards et al. It is primarily the Trial Attorney Association. And yes, I can name names but I won't because that can be almost as dangerous as getting on the Killing Klintons' wrong side. Suffice it to say that JBE is entrenched with a bunch of scumbag lawyers who milk the system literally stealing YOUR money! On a historic note, in the entire history of Louisiana, no incumbent governor has ever won reelection after ending up in a runoff. So, if JBE pulls it off, it'll be a first. Oh, and the poll watchers better be on their best game in New Orleans, Baton Rouge and certain precincts elsewhere. The "dead" will be voting multiple times. Trump is coming to Monroe, next week. If I thought I could get in, I'd like to go.
-

I am genuinely still undecided on whether I vote for Rispone or abstain. Trump won't change my mind. Only Rispone can do that. I would love to hear something specific he plans on accomplishing and how he plans to do it.

Re: Early Voting Starts Tomorrow
40% of early voters were African American. That’s bad news for Phony Rispone.

We already know blacks will vote 98% socialist in Louisiana.
How is the fact that blacks were 40% of those who voted early bad news for conservatives. It has no bearing on what the overall black turnout will be.
I think Edwards will win, but not due to high black turnout on election day or 40% ratio during early voting.

Socialist? Are you writing speeches for Eddie? Anyway, it’s the highest AA turnout for a non-presidential election in LA history. That bodes well for high AA turnout on Election Day.
Nobody showed up to vote for Hillary because nobody liked her. I’ve yet to meet anybody in real life that actually likes Rispone. He’s like a knock-off Trump doll that was made in Chiner. He’s says some of the same things at all the wrong times and NEVER in the right way.

Yes, democrat = socialism. I caught on to that way before FOX News began the mantra. 40/60 is not an indication of turnout. It's an indication of how many blacks voted early. Turnout is a different stat. It's easier to get them to the polls over a 14 day period vs 1 day. Consider the reasons for that. Please apply logic to your liberal talking points.
Again, I think Edwards will win, but it won't matter about how many blacks vote for him. He already has that vote.
I agree with the second paragraph. I feel the same way about Rispone. He can make a difference for the better. Edwards can only do more damage.
-
Re: Early Voting Starts Tomorrow
Rispone is hard to like. For the life of me I don’t understand why the Republicans keep running these pathetic candidates. Piyush did so much damage to the party that a Rispone might ensure a Democrat for the next several years. I can’t vote for Edwards, but I hate having to vote for the other choice.

Yeah, I actually heard the first thing that made me want to vote for Rispone the other day. It was an attack ad against him that said he wanted a consitutional convention as if that was a bad thing. I haven't heard him mention this, but if that is one of his goals he might get my vote.

Rispone is a joke.
Rispone is a weak candidate, but a successful business person. Business prowess works in politics better than the usual corruption shown by Jindal, Edwards, and the other Socialist Dems.
Oh, let's not pretend Edwards is pro-life. He is a democrats democrat.
-
Re: Early Voting Starts Tomorrow
He’s got a better pro-life record than the President. No comment on Rispone and Abraham? He’s not weak, he’s nefarious.
-
Re: Early Voting Starts Tomorrow
Okay, I know some things about JBE. I know he is pro life, pro 2nd Amendment, pro military, pro law enforcement, and a devoted Catholic. I know I don’t like his fiscal policy. I don’t like that he claims disaster relief money as part of a surplus. I don’t like that the gas tax is almost never used for road work(bigger than a JBE problem, but he isn’t helping).I know nothing about Rispone because he hasn’t told us anything about himself or what he stands for. Anyone help me out on that?
-
Re: Early Voting Starts Tomorrow
I also appreciate JBE requiring “In God We Trust” posters at schools.
-
Re: Early Voting Starts Tomorrow

That doesn’t bother me. Look at who Rispone has championed. He hasn’t been effective. I’m old enough to know very successful business men that I wouldn’t trust my dog to. Rispone has been buying political favors for years and now he wants to act like an outsider?
Come on. You know he’s full of it as well as I do. Plus, he acted like a real POS with Abraham. He’s unfit, unqualified, and uninspiring. He deserves to lose.

Do whatever you need to do. I doubt whoever you find supported it is running for governor.
What’s funny is that Phony Eddie barely has a record and it’s still so counter to how he’s trying to portray himself. He’s an opportunist trying to see if he can cash in on Trump.

Re: Early Voting Starts Tomorrow
Between the "guvnar's" race and the Natchitoches parish president race, I've gotten my fill of politics for a while. That is until next year, the Iowa caucus and beyond. I don't know why I find presidential politics so fascinating, but I do.
Doesn't really matter to me. I've made money, built wealth, no matter who was guvnar or who was president of the US. And, that won't change. (just have to play different sides of the street... ;) )

We had/have a joke as a governor.
Capitalist public servants is what we need (flaws and all), not socialist liberal career politicians.
Enjoy your auto rates doubling over the next four years while the jobs continue go to Texas and Mississippi.

Re: Early Voting Starts Tomorrow
The Republican fat cat idiots and crony, self serving power brokers deservedly lost. Second time in 50 years I've voted Democrat for governor, other was E Edwards over Duke.
"It's not the lesser of two evils, it's the evil of two lessers" is how Johnny Carson once put it. Republican moneyed (fat cat) powers BLEW A SURE WIN WITH ABRAHAM.
Edward got 774,000 votes, Republican Ardoin got 867,000. JBE easily loses to a decent opponent. I'm not pleased Edwards won but I'm elated that front man Rispone and those that pull his strings lost.

Stop pretending you had any confidence in Rispone. You had to hold you nose REAL tight to cast that vote.
Like I said, you should demand better.
Did you see JBE’s biggest gains were in districts Abraham won? Guess they care about character over there!

I've been demanding better since EWE started the open primary crap. Things won't change until that is changed.
JBE gained in those districts because people didn't go vote or didn't vote for Edwards or Rispone.
I called this when Rispone got in the run off. I NEVER said he would win.

Fair question. The campaign disgusted me, and was why I could never have voted for Rispone. Went through a similar race (wasn't close) for state senator here and I'm totally disgusted.

Re: Early Voting Starts Tomorrow
No doubt Rispone cost himself this race by following the advice of his campaign advisers. His own greed got him.
It's funny how voters will vote against that sort of thing, but will cast a vote for a democrat who celebrates being corrupt. This sickened me when people voted for EWE and it still does.

Re: Early Voting Starts Tomorrow
I have to admit I didn’t vote. Couldn’t stand either candidate. We’re relocating to Springdale, AR for permanent residence anyway.
Much better quality of life there for semi-retired folks like us - cheaper housing, access to more health care options, better shopping and restaurants, among other things.
I’ll still be spending a good bit of time in LA though as long as I have clients here.
-
Re: Early Voting Starts Tomorrow
Springdale AR is a nice area. Thirty years ago is was a folksy backwater place, then the Wal=mart money started flowing in so it is booming now.

Re: Early Voting Starts Tomorrow
I voted in the primary, but not in the runoff. I just couldn't stand Rispone and his attacks on Abraham and even some of his attacks on Edwards.
The bottom line is while Edwards wasn't great, I would feel better about the country if there were more Democrats like him. Rispone called him a radical liberal on many occasions, but he is as moderate as they come. I like Edwards better than any of the current Dem presidential candidates.
Rispone did what he needed to do to win the primary, but unfortunately his scorched earth campaign against Abraham alienated too many of his supporters. Had he focused on policy in the primary and left the attacks for JBE maybe things would have been different. Who knows.
I hate that they tried to make it about Trump also. The Louisiana governor has nothing to do with impeachment. I'm also not going to punish JBE for something he has no control over. Not to say he does or doesn't support what is going on now, but he doesn't have any active part in it so I'm not going to vote against him just because I don't like what Nancy Pelosi or Adam Schiff are doing. I would happily replace one of those two with JBE and instantly make the Country a better place.
The Louisiana GOP has a history of shitting the bed when it comes to candidates for Governor. We kept the tradition alive this time.

I still don’t know who Eddie is or what he stands for.

Re: Early Voting Starts Tomorrow
Well, I see too many folks, too caught up in "what he said in a campaign ad," still don't get it. I'll post it again here for posterity sake. Maybe a thousand years from now some historian will come across these posts, trapped in the cyber ice (as mammoth bones are in Russian permafrost) and say, Hey! at least one person understood! Here goes...
...JBE is a puppet of the Trial Attorneys Association. All such puppets, and their parent organization, need to be swept away by the hand of God like Sodom and Gomorrah.

Everybody hates trial attorneys...until they need one.

You really need an example of someone needing an attorney?
I'm no fan of ambulance chasers, but to lump all "trial attorneys" into some evil subclass is an example of the overstatement BS that got Rispone beat.

I didn't to that. I qualified my statement by saying I know some of the good guys. I will say, that if somebody advertises as being an expert of screwing people they are generally horrible human beings.

Your candidate did. In fact, I know a handful of Trump loving attorneys that voted for JBE because of Rispone and the LA GOP's stupidity.

You lost me. If you mean Rispone was "my candidate" I was not aware of the trial lawyers being being all in for Rispone. FWIW, I said from day one that Rispone was a weak candidate, I didn't like him, and I didn't expect him to win. Yes, he would have been a better governor than Jon Bel Obama has been or will be. That's not saying much.
State law is the problem with our insurance rates not federal law.
Please stop saying this is a state GOP issue. This is a Louisiana open primary issue. The state GOP is hamstrung, but they should demand that we change the open primary crap that EWE forced on us years ago.

That's the biggest problem. The primary would have been a great time to get his policies out there. Instead all i heard was "I'm like Trump" "Boom there it is".
It's unfortunate that it sounds like maybe he is a pretty decent guy and they didn't get that out there and tell me why he would be good for the state. Instead we were told he has an R by his name and he likes Trump so vote for him.

Rispone said "trial laaawwwyers" about as often as he said Trump. He was trying to make it an issue and the people didn't buy it.
This certainly is a state GOP issue. They refused to coalesce behind Abraham for fear of putting off Trump voters. They are ineffective and, more or less, spineless. Jungle primary didn't prevent Bobby J from landing the office.

"THEY" weren't behind anybody and never have been until the run off with the Dem candidate.
The open primary created Rispone, Vitter, Jindal, Foster, and Roemer. None were good candidates or governors, but by the time Vitter and Rispone got here, consevatives were jaded by the BS that Foster and Jindal had done even while serving two terms.
The only way the Louisiana GOP can "get behind a candidate" is to do away with the open primary. Surely you understand that there are too many factions of the La GOP to get behind one single candidate on day one.
EWE knew exactly what he was doing.

Like I said...ineffective and weak.

Any state with our system would be the same.

And yet, the dems can figure it out. So has the GOP in the past. I get the mailers...they are a mess. Swept by the tides of what "might" win and unable to put forth a vision that's compelling to unify conservatives.
Maybe taking their lumps will make them reevaluate their strategy.

The dems were in the same mess in years the useless Republicans I listed above won. All those winning Republicans I listed, other than the incumbents, were in the same mess.
It's the system and to a large degree the split cultures of our state.
I have no doubt that if only Repulicans could vote on Republicans and Dem for dems, the Republicans would come out on top in the general election just like they have in every southern state for years.
