Re: 10/19 Southern Miss Game
Outside of the Texas lost, we finally face a team with a winning record and has a good passing offense. DC Diaco has a lot of work to do this week.

Re: 10/19 Southern Miss Game
Is KXKZ streaming blocked outside of the 60 mile radius for the pre-game show that starts at 1:00?
Also, I've had trouble logging on to TuneIn outside of my home wifi.
I noticed Tune In is showing this...
This show will be available on Sat, Oct 19 at 2:30PM.
-
Re: 10/19 Southern Miss Game
I've tried to stream via KXKZ from Little Rock and it's blocked for me. For the UMass game, I was able to listen to the game via TuneIn. Seeing the next game is scheduled this weekend for live stream, it makes sense that you'll get that message "This show will be available on Sat, Oct 19 at 2:30PM."
I have played KXKZ from their website, but when game time starts it blacks out for me. That is when I have to go to TuneIn.
-
Re: 10/19 Southern Miss Game
I wonder if no pre-game show is a rule with TuneIn? Whoever at Tech is responsible should be letting fans know how they can listen to the pregame show. Tech fans and sponsors are being short changed. SOS...
-
Re: 10/19 Southern Miss Game
The game opens as pick'em with the O/U at 57.5.
Which way will the line move?

Apparently you are in a geographic blackout anywhere within 200 miles of Ruston, Maybe farther, even if I disable location services it always tells me there is a black out. Does anyone reside somewhere farther out, say in Alabama, Missouri or farther stream the games through the KXKZ site or App?
I can normally pick up KXKZ over the air at my house most of the time either fair or not at all, but on Saturdays, there is a 107.5 urban station in Magee, MS that apparently decides to turn up their wattage or some kind of change on Saturdays and they always overpower KXKX in my location.

Actually the geo-fence is at 70 miles or about the distance KXKZ normally reaches OTA. Learfield announced this just before the season began.
The All Access subscription should relieve all problems with switching back and forth for pre-game and the game production, but now I can't find how to subscribe to All Access.

Re: 10/19 Southern Miss Game
I've audio streamed the Rice game on the road using the LA Tech Athletics mobile app by SIDEARM Sports (website/app platform by Learfield | IMG). It worked like a charm. It's way better than the LA Tech Mobile X app they pushed out a few years ago.
LA Tech Athletics | Google Play
LA Tech Athletics | Apple App Store

Thanks. This is what LaTech Sports (Learfield) should be advertising instead of the TuneIn link.

If a fan is traveling down I-20 and tries to listen to the game after they got out of range OTA, they could just log on to the KXKZ ap before. Now with the geofence Tech and Learfield are recommending TuneInRadio, which has not been working on my phone lately unless I'm at home. Hopefully a subscription to LaTech Athletics Mobile ap will fix it, but our fans are being forced to pay for something that should be free unless they can get TuneInRadio to work.

Re: 10/19 Southern Miss Game
Okay what do I have to subscribe to to get it on my computer? I didn't really try very hard for the Grambling game, but this one is considerably more important. If it wasn't 350 miles each way and if I were ten years younger I might try to go.

For listening on your phone or computer and to get the pre-game and the game.
LA Tech Athletics | Google Play
LA Tech Athletics | Apple App Store
Otherwise log on to KXKX https://www.z1075fm.com/ for the pre-game, then TuneIn https://tunein.com/radio/Louisiana-T...83549345463519 (supposedly free)

Southern Miss game? NFL Network App. Sign in with your cable/satellite provider. It works even if your package doesnt have NFL Network.

Re: 10/19 Southern Miss Game
I don't have the NFL network on Xfinity. I was able to download on Roku and watch regular programming, but not live games or Redzone. Maybe other carriers allow it

Re: 10/19 Southern Miss Game
Will Holtz FINALLY find a way to beat the Eagles at home? To do it, Smith has to be more consistent throwing the football. No more overthrowing wide open WR by five yards. The WR have to catch balls that are catchable, and come back to the ball when Smith is pressured. On defense don’t let Watkins and company beat you with the underneath stuff. I have a feeling we are gonna see more than our fair share of slants across the middle and WR screens, and we’ve got to find a way to stop them. I would hope the guys have had this one circled all year and show up ready for a war. We will find out on Saturday.

I believe thats basically USM’s offense. Mostly short passes where WR makes plays.

Any predictions for attendance? I'm sure having a 2:30pm kickoff will hurt it compared to a night game, but I'm hoping they can market the Rivalry in Dixie well and hype this game up.

Decent attendance by USM fans, given it's a road game for them. But, they know Ruston is like a second home with ole Skippy at the helm. If we manage to be competitive...well, that's all Skippy cares about anyway...we'll find a way to "snatch defeat from the jaws of victory" like blowing a double-digit lead in the final minute. Or, we'll feel generous like we did in 2015 and hand them SEVEN turnovers on a silver platter. (It'll probably monsoon too).

Well, it is USM, so there is a chance of rain. Our 10 will be there, but only after we get back from cross country over in Monroe.

Seriously? My dear friend, your remarks are always drive by and meant to cut down our coaches, players, ADM, Dawgs fans no matter the occasion or reason (some are needed no doubt). But you default to the extreme most all of the time. There is very little, if every, any praise in you for our University and Athletics. You could at least try you know. I truly believe you want low attendance and an unhappy fan base to prove yourself correct on many issues. And I agree some need correcting. But you appear to be one unhappy dawg, which we would all love helping to "lighten up some" and enjoy your Saturdays. Maybe not worrying about the line of the game would help. "Life's way too short".

Re: 10/19 Southern Miss Game
I’ve watched three Southern Miss games this year. I can promise you that their WR corps are very, very good. Watkins is scary good. To me he’s most dangerous on the quick 5 to seven yard slant over the middle. If you watch Abraham closely, his first read is usually to him. That’s where he wants to go with the football and I don’t blame him. In my opinion, I’d take Amik and try and lock him up at the line of scrimmage and disrupt the timing of that slant. Mitchell and Adams are good too, but not nearly as good after the catch as Watkins.
-
Re: 10/19 Southern Miss Game
I think we need a defensive TD early (yeah...I know...tough thing to NEED). Have to be able to play loose on O. The deep passes against UMass were a good sign...even if we missed a few. We need their O to play from behind. They'll abandon the run and press passes.
Special teams HAS to have their best game of the year. Win this one and we SHOULD host the CG.
Time will tell.
All 6 books at docsports have us as a home dog...

I agree 100% about ST, they have got to play lights out. I think that Smith has to have a better game than 16/28 to win. They will play safeties up and force us to go over the top. If he can connect on a few of those throws, I think it opens up the play book. If he doesn’t, it’s gonna be tough sledding offensively.

I agree. If our DB's give the USM receivers our usual 10-to 15 yd cushion, we're toast. Just can't do that.
I know some Tech fans seem gleeful that USM doesn't have a strong running game (although one USM RB did rush for over 100 yds last week against UNT.) You need to understand that is by design. USM relies on a pair of outstanding playmakers at WR and a short passing game to supplement the lack of a running game. IMO, it's one of the main reason's Abraham has such a high pass completion per centage (over 80% last week) each week. He rarely throws deep.
NO CUSHION THIS WEEK!!!

I don't think the completion percentage matters as much as our willingness to stick to the plan to throw deep. We need somebody flying on each pass play and a "safety" outlet on each play. Give J'Mar two fast reads and let the chips fall where they may. The emergence of Henderson is a great development for us. The kid from Ruston high was also impressive provided he holds on to the ball.

Re: 10/19 Southern Miss Game

If you watch you can see two things
(1) Watkins and Adams is a two headed monster. Both of them are very good.
(2) Southern Miss has a very soft secondary. Having watched them this year, I’d say that’s their biggest weakness. The question is can we exploit that?
-

Yeah he did look really good and a good compliment to Henderson. However, if we can’t connect on the over the top throws at least 40-50% of the time, we will have a hard time on offense. They are going to give it to us starting out to see if Smith can beat them. I KNOW our WR will be able to create space between them because their secondary is average at best. The big question is can he put it on the money. If he does early, I think advantage Tech. Plus he needs to really use those legs this week.

This is a pretty accurate assessment. The short passes are our run game. We have a converted wide receiver playing RB for us and he has the quick twitch that the other 2 big backs don't have. Our only really RB that can catch, run and block got hurt in the first game and we are just trying to get by with whatever we can for now. Our DBs are by far the weakest link on defense/team. They aren't even average.

I do think he could give us some serious problems with his running ability. Locksley for UTEP gashed us a couple of weeks ago. Most of them weren't designed QB runs either.

I don't jump through may ass to ignore the discussion and blurt out " JUST COME TO THE GAME!"
Have you considered that some people have things going on in their lives that prevent them from attending games right now?
The discussion you rudely butted in on was not about not attending, it was about the best way to catch both the pre-game and the game on the radio.

Maybe I am wrong here, but I just took that as a joke... not just him demanding everyone come to the game. Because obviously not everyone is in a position to attend a game.

I agree about Henderson. He's a bigger component than I think people recognize. J'mar can also hurt teams with his legs IF we run him purposefully. We have Hardy and CJ as proven weapons, but Hebert, Stanley, Graham, and Smoke can make key plays. I feel like if we play the dime package and take away their short game, we can handle them. Of course that's going to put our corners on islands, but that's a necessary risk. I don't think the long ball is really Abraham's specialty, he doesn't have a real strong arm.
All that to say, if we can take the short game from them, I think they'll press. But if they take one thing from us, Hardy for example, I think we have enough diversity to overcome it.

All that to say, if we can take the short game from them, I think they'll press. But if they take one thing from us, Hardy for example, I think we have enough diversity to overcome
it.
I think that is as good of an assessment and any as to what it will take to be competitive and beat USM. We already know that their running game is not their strong suit although probably adequate, the short and quick pass will be what they try to rely on to give their running game a little action on occasion. That is an excellent strategy to take advantage of our bend don't break defensive scheming. I think they will use receivers to try and suck our middle down the field to open up that short pass, we will have to have discipline and defend the short game and do the bending on the long ball. The percentages are just lower for anyone for the long game in most cases, so lets play close and keep the short pass and the run contained. Playing the dime we could keep some pressure on Abraham, thus taking more of the long game from them. Our defense will have to be the guys to win this game for us, plus once in the red zone it becomes a short game game for the offense and we should be able to hold them to field goals. Now if Abraham has good wheels, that could change that a lot, that adds back another dimension, but again if we are playing short, we should be able to contain.
Speaking of wheels, Run J'mar in designed plays a lot, and not just in the red zone, between the twenties when we can. J'Mar, two to three good running backs, and two good receivers should make us a threat if they will all be used in a balanced fashion. I think you are right on about Hebert, not sure if he can be a Cangelosi, but I think he may be underutilized and could be a surprise for USM. Smoke, on certain plays, I am sure he is hard to see from the defensive side of the ball, you never know where he is coming from are heading to, play him to his strengths. Smoke should be one of those guys that just squirts out of a defensive players hands like a watermelon seed when they try to tackle him.
In other words Boxer, you are exactly right in my opinion, just repeating what you said in another way!

Re: 10/19 Southern Miss Game
This game is going play out exactly as our repeating tendencies would suggest. We won’t play consistently well at any phase of the game, there will be peaks and valleys, JMar will miss some open throws, our play calling will be predictable and suspect at times, we won’t be aggressive in scoring, we’ll kick a minimum of 2 field goals when we need touchdowns, we’ll give up too many long 3rd down conversations, we’ll play too conservative on defense and allow them to move the ball seemingly unchallenged at times, we’ll play in hopes that they’ll make mistakes to beat themselves more so than us trying to play aggressively to beat them. In the end Tech will need to ball last to win whether that means scoring last or keeping them from scoring last. We all know how history tends to repeat itself and with Holtz it’s nearly a guarantee.

HOPEFULLY.....Holtz has some sense of pride and has his team ready to play. What man likes getting his a$$ beat on the regular by a peer? And the same for Smith. Surely he wants to prove that he was the better QB and that’s why Abe never saw the field. Like it or not, they both have something to prove on Saturday, and I hope they do just that.

Re: 10/19 Southern Miss Game
Boxer had a great question for Holtz on the radio. I think it touched a nerve. Our HC only remembers the last two game against USM. As bad as those two losses were, the 2015 and 2016 losses were two of THE worst losses we've ever suffered. BTW, that's 4 in a row for those counting.

The only two wins Holtz has against them were the two worst years in Southern Miss history.

The discussion you rudely butted in on was not about not attending, it was about the best way to catch both the pre-game and the game on the radio.
Hum...some more "self-righteous and condescending" banter I see.
Let's see, I live 3 hours away from Ruston so yes I would understand that issue plus many others. Again my friend, "Life's way too short".

We must tackle well. USM offense lives off of YAC from broken tackles.

I am heading to Ruston for the game this week with my kids. I have tickets but have family that may want to attend too and wondering if anyone has an extra ticket or two that they do not want to go to waste.

Re: 10/19 Southern Miss Game
Back to the Leirfield thing for a second. I had posted this back in early Sept in one of the game threads but here is what the big Z told me...
I can't list to the Tech game today - says it's region locked. I'm in Canada is this is the first time this has happened.
Unfortunately Learfield communications has required us to geofence the stream. We can only stream it to listeners within 75 miles of our zip code. The tunein app should have it streaming free though.

Well I guess I am just SOL, I am almost exactly 80 miles ( as the crow flies) from Ruston to my door step. Never made much sense to me to stream it to listeners who could already pick it up most of the time over the air. I know for sure it is geo fenced at around 130 miles out, because many of you helped me this past Saturday find the tunein app and stream the game. By the way, thanks for that help many of you gave me.

Re: 10/19 Southern Miss Game
Sooooo what is the word on Dancy? Is it that Henderson has clearly taken the #1 RB spot or is Dancy being “Gurley-ed”? Meaning his use is being managed carefully for more key games. Henderson has been fine since he has secured the ball better. I can see the UMass game was a good opportunity to get a look at Marcus more and keep Dancy fresh for the tougher conference stretch.
-
Re: 10/19 Southern Miss Game
Not sure on Dancy, I have to say I love seeing Henderson improve each week. Looking up where he ranks in the NCAA stats, he's tied at #8 Rushing TD with a total of eight TDs.

Im just glad Henderson seems to have gotten out of that habit of 1 fumble a game, knock on wood.

Re: 10/19 Southern Miss Game
He only fumbled it twice this year (once @Texas and @BGSU). Against Texas, the ball got punched out from behind. The BGSU game he didn't secure the ball, it was all on him.
Other than that he's been good with football.

I've been waiting for someone on this board to talk about Israel Tucker and Elijah Hines. Both looked like quicker and faster RB's to me than Dancy. Hines looked very impressive. Very quick. He averaged almost 10 yds per carry on 3 carries.

Re: 10/19 Southern Miss Game
It's strange that Holtz doesn't start him even though he's listed at the top of the depth chart.
Last game against UMass he avg 12.5 yd per carry with 3 TD and even caught the ball twice for avg 15.5 yds. That's very good offensive production from one player.

We learned long ago that Hotlz starts who he thinks/wants to be the best not who performs best in practice and actual games.

I'm guessing Dancy is nursing injuries, he didn't play until mop-up duty against UMass.

I'm guilty too. But with good reason. We've had a couple of games where our RB's just didn't perform well. And it seems like Dancy & Tucker have been hurt a lot already this season.

If you're talking about the kid who called into the Post Game show last Saturday night, I heard him. He did very well. He was very articulate and sounded like he knew his stuff. Ben Carlisle better watch out!

Don't know if you have a man's phone (Android) :) , but you can use an app called some variation "fake GPS": Here is one I have used. Just place yourself in Funroe and you good to go. https://play.google.com/store/apps/d....fakegps&hl=en

Maybe I am mistaken, but I recall Henderson had a couple of fumbles last season in his limited opportunities. May not have all been turnover(s), but the ball was taken from his control. Then he started this season with two lost fumbles. So my concern was there was a pattern of not being able to secure the ball. He has been fine the last three games. Looking for him to continue to be productive and an important part of this seasons success.

Looking up 2018 box scores, these are the offensive fumbles.
Most fumbles last year came from J'Mar Smith which he had 8 fumbles and lost 5. Justin Henderson was recorded with only one fumble with lost.
