This is the most tech $#!+ ever
How do we let our 5th year QB get suspended on a school administered drug test the week of one of the biggest games we've had this DECADE.
Tommy is a patsy b#tch. This is the cherry on top of the sh*t mountain that is his tenure here.

You are getting some bad information. I'm no fan our our AD, but this is not on him.

Re: This is the most tech sh$t ever
I would be interested in knowing how this happens before our two biggest games of the year. What’s the drug testing process? Are tests done every week? Or did someone just decide now was a good time to test.
It’s 100% on the players but if I was the coach I would be warning the whole team during the year about this happening, especially as it gets close to critical games. I see nothing wrong with that.
If Smith and Hardy have 3 positives as mentioned on another thread, I’m wondering if that’s three in this season or over their careers.

These are the same questions I have...doesn't really matter at this point, but I'm curious.

Re: This is the most tech sh$t ever
The NCAA rules are specific and easy to find. Apparently the NCAA allows the school to police in house, but requires all results be passed on to them. This is why schools can't play around with the results and why schools ALWAYS say "for breaking team rules".
-
Re: This is the most tech sh$t ever
It’s common in various businesses and sports to have random drug tests. If your number comes up, so to speak, you’re tested, if you refuse you’re fired, if you fail, you’re disciplined. This was no surprise to the team. They had to have known there would be random tests either by conference or NCAA RULES.
JMar as the team’s focal player was an idiot and totally irresponsible.
Holtz should collect his gear.

I laughed as I read the title of this thread. It appears you were a student when you joined this board in 2004. Trust me, you have no idea what things were like in the late 80s and early 90s right after Tech joined the FBS. And it went way beyond the football team into even some women's sports.
To say things were crazy at that time would be an understatement. It makes this look like Romper Room.
-
Re: This is the most tech sh$t ever
I'm sure it happens, but I never heard of this happening to football players from other schools --CUSA schools, for example. It's just insane.
LA Tech continues to fail when its time to WIN. This is stuff that never happens. You know, kinda like turning the bowl bid down in 2012. Or, having 6 starting football players suspended only hours before the 2014 CUSA Championship game. Or, hiring a 23-yr old coach for the Lady Techsters. Or, losing 80 something yds on a bad snap against Mississippi State.
We continue to find ways to fail.
It's as if someone at LA Tech can't stand being normal. You just can't make this stupid stuff up.

I would rather have him back and let him ride the pine the rest of the season, that would be a good scenario.

Thats the idea. I hope we don’t need him. And its a good lesson for him to be able to see that. BUT, if Allen goes down, the whole team does not deserve to suffer under Elliot.
-
Re: This is the most tech sh$t ever
yep hopefully we win out with AA, and we could put Smith in for the final 2 plays of each game and let him run a delayed handoff up the middle. I would personally be happy if his time on the team was done, but I want the best for all the hardwork everyone else has put in.

I agree completely!! This team has been blessed with a chance to be considered among the seasons ever and these selfish knuckle-heads have likely puffed it away. This season will forever have an asterisk. Most likely it will be for what might have been ala 2012. But it could be they won but only they let a few players off easy for failing drug tests."
-
Re: This is the most tech $#!+ ever
To put the icing on the cake, I do believe if we win with AA and our other receivers, I think our rep gets a lot better, I think will play a lot in getting us ranked. This team and coach showing that they can still get the job done would be a huge statement in my book.
I know Marshall is playing a game celebrating and honoring players and a period of time when they faced some adversity, but I think this takes our players mind off of Marshall's mission and concentrates it on ours.

Re: This is the most tech $#!+ ever
Rather than blame our quarterback, who has gotten us to 8-1, I wonder if any Tech people see this as part of the stupidity of the war on drugs. I do, and we're suffering the consequences for it.
I also wonder if people in the NCAA HQ have to take drug tests. If not, why not? It's not like cannabis is an athletic performance enhancing drug. If the NCAA is to be drug free, then the corporate leadership should set the example, especially since they don't have to deal with athletes' physical pains.

I just hope Skip doesn't play "not to lose" tonight, because Marshall is most certainly going to be playing to win.

https://www.vox.com/2016/3/22/112787...s-racism-nixon
The historic record shows that the desired policy outcome of the initiation of the "War on Drugs" was the oppression of black people. Given that fact, it's unsurprising that a black athlete has been ensnared in it.
Just because something is legal doesn't mean it's ethical. Slavery was legal. Jim Crow was legal. The "War on Drugs" is the latest, legal implementation of this nation's effort to oppress black people.
It's unfortunate that people feel greater loyalty to a racist, unethical law than they do to another human being with whom they have a connection, even it is as just a sports fan.

The question of legality or "right-ness" are irrelevant at this point in time. The current rules have been in place for years. The consequences of violating the rules are well known. Every single school and player in the country are dealing with the same situation. Until the rules change it is what it is.
Our players rolled the dice, selfishly, and lost. Criticism of the Tech or the coaches is in my opinion, are misplaced. The players shouldn't be surprised at the criticism of them or lack of sympathy for them.

No one is served by this but those who value the oppressive aspect of the "War on Drugs." And this incident is a minor example of its injustices.

Re: This is the most tech $#!+ ever
11 states and DC have legalized marijuana for "recreational" use
20 more states --including Louisiana-- have "broadly legalized" marijuana for medical purposes
Other states, such as Virginia, enacted laws decades ago allowing for the possession of marijuana if individuals received prescriptions from doctors. States like Alabama and Mississippi, for instance, maintain laws permitting medical weed for severe epileptic conditions.

Our guys failed a test back in September. They knew they would be tested again, but kept tokin' anyway. I suppose you could blame Holtz for not staying on their ass, but not LaTech for following NCAA rules. This has been mentioned several times, but this is a pattern with many Holtz players going back to Carlos Henderson. Holtz obviously lacks the management skills to keep them in line.

. Thanks for posting the truth! None of them should be allowed back this year. They knew they had to take the test and didn’t care who they harmed. Obviously Skip didn’t address this harshly enough when they failed the first time! Winning is important, but they easily could have won against some of the crappy teams we played sitting them for a game the first time. The picture would have been clearer for them about the results now.
-
Re: This is the most tech $#!+ ever
Maybe Skippy is trying to be their friend, not their coach.
I know from experience you can't cross that line as a head coach. There has to be an arm's-length distance between a coach and his players (or a shorter distance in the case of a certain former Techster coach, ahem...). Once a coach becomes "friends" with his players, it's over.

That's not at all what I said. Athletes were smokin' weed when you and I were at Tech back in the 70s. We lost two of our best athletes to drug issues back then.
Some guys can't be monitored or helped. Some coaches (Holtz) don't care enough about the players, team, or overall program to stay on top of the players who can cause problems.

Re: This is the most tech $#!+ ever
Skip Holtz has done this twice now. He suspended 6 starters --for academic reasons-- right before LA Tech's 2104 appearance in the CUSA Championship game. Now he has suspended 3 more starters for undisclosed reasons, on the eve of an extremely important road game that held many conference title implications. He lost both games.
Do you guys know how RARELY this happens to a school once, much less twice? In only a 5-yr timeframe, no less?
I'm starting to think Skip Holtz finds some kind of sick pleasure from suspending important starters just before important games. Before you laugh, note that his daddy did it back in 1977 when he suspended 3 starters just before his Arkansas team played and beat #2 ranked Oklahoma 31-6 in the 1978 Orange Bowl. After that, Lou Holtz was forever remembered as a great coach, who wasn't afraid to "do the right thing". Lou Holtz even got the Notre Dame job because of this.
Doing something similar becomes a no lose situation for Skip. Rinse and repeat. If his team wins without the suspended starters, he's a hero (like daddy). If he loses the game, well he can't be held accountable because, "Oh well, he didn't have all his starters playing".

Miss St suspended 4 announced today. It happens everywhere. Given the high profile of two of ours, that is abnormal. Don’t KNOW who that’s on. None of the stories being pushed are 100% internally consistent.
Doesn’t matter. It’s over. I’ll watch the last few games, but my interest has been severely dampened.

If you look in the top left corner of posts, they are date stamped. They suspended the 4 BEFORE the BAMA game. I don’t know who they are because I don’t follow MS State. They were suspended for the same reason our guys were...for violating team rules.

Not really when you think about how many times we have done this rinse and repeat. Get headed in the right direction and then blow our own feet off. Most of the die hard fans have seen this so many times, and blind loyalty on gets you so far.
I think everyone would agree that people wouldn’t be this worked up if some outside force had us derailed over and over. We would be pissed, but not like we are when it is self inflicted, whether it be at the player level or at the president level.

Re: This is the most tech $#!+ ever
To me, the issue is not "does this happen anywhere but Tech?"
It's that "why does this happen at Tech at the most strategic times, in creative and new ways each time, on a consistent and extremely predictable basis?" That's the question we need to answer.

The question should be how do you prevent it? 18-24 year old kids are going to make poor decisions, that is predictable.

BS! All talk. We just want better answers on this one and equivalency within the system.

It's "Da Man's fault" down in Baton Rouge and who listened to "Da Man" in Ruston. La Tech got to uppity, too close to being ranked and in a great Bowl game don't you know. JK...but I wouldn't doubt it. ;)

It's not like that hasn't happened.
Let's say this was unpreventable (unlikely) and not malicious (almost certain).
Why do these things continue to happen? I need not repeat the litany. The one thing they have in common is that they hurt Tech right as we're about to make a big step. They also could be explained by malice, incompetence, or simple random bad luck.
So how do we prevent it?

Two LSU starting Offensive lineman were suspended for Ole Miss game too

LA Tech continues to fail when its time to WIN. This is stuff that never happens. You know, kinda like turning the bowl bid down in 2012. Or, having 6 starting football players suspended only hours before the 2014 CUSA Championship game. Or, hiring a 23-yr old coach for the Lady Techsters. Or, losing 80 something yds on a bad snap against Mississippi State.
We continue to find ways to fail.
It's as if someone at LA Tech can't stand being normal. You just can't make this stupid stuff up.
Yep, and it makes us keep a bottle of Excedrin close by!!

Boy oh boy would that open a can of worms in today's soft society....The Ruston police, DA's office, campus police and Tech administration would all then be involved and you would most likely be arrested for HAZING and the program shut down.....

Re: This is the most tech $#!+ ever
I am not very sympathetic to the “they are just young kids” argument when it comes to players like a 5th year starting QB.

You are CORRECT, of course.
Some folks just don't get it, and never will get it. They are "willfully ignorant", just to be argumentative. They'll equate Miss St suspending a backup interior linemen due to "breaking team rules" (i.e, one guy got a DWI, another case got a cruelty to animals charge) in Week 1, to us losing a 5th Yr starting QB in Week 12, who was suspended for smoking Cannabis. And never mind that our guy is a team leader who has started about 40 consecutive games, and we're on the cusp of a CUSA title. Hardly comparable circumstances.

- Offensive Linemen?
- Ole Miss game
- One of these OL (Austin Deculus) missed the Ole Miss game due to an INJURY
- The other LSU OL (Saahdiq Charles) also missed 4 other games this season for various reasons
- A 3rd OL, (backup Ed Ingram) missed the first 4 games of the season before being reinstated to the team.
So, that's 3 LSU OL that missed the Ole Miss game, for various reasons. But absolutely NONE Of those LSU players had circumstances even remotely similar to what J'Mars and LA Tech's were. LSU certainly isn't dependent" on any of these guys the way LA Tech is Smith and Hardy.
* So, nice try. But you know this makes you look like one of two things:
1) Either you're a liar, or
2) Or you're just very sloppy.
* I'll give you the benefit of the doubt this time, and just assume you were being sloppy.

So, these players missed games due to “various reasons”. Just because they weren’t all suspended due to drugs for the Ole Miss game, that automatically negates the fact that Tech is not the only one suffering for player suspensions due to violations of team rules, or other internally handled matters? I thought the purpose of posting other suspensions would be verification that Tech isn’t on an island.
-
Re: This is the most tech $#!+ ever
Or are we complaining strictly about the timing? Meaning other schools would find a way to suspend players for a game against Grambling instead of Marshall?

Re: This is the most tech $#!+ ever
It’s so simple that it’s complicated.
We have to pass it to see what’s in it.
I do not think it means what you think it means.
Don’t ever go full retard.
Hearsay is more credible than direct information.
Cats and dogs, living together, it’s mass hysteria.

Re: This is the most tech $#!+ ever
Okay, HD, I really need to understand exactly what your frustration is and give me examples of other schools doing things the way you wish we were or giving samples of us doing things that no other school ever does and they frustrates you. I am trying very hard to understand.

You can give him any example you want and it wont be good enough. He'll say its not the same.
The appeal to purity is a logical fallacy wherein one keeps shifting the definition to exclude any counterexamples offered.

You really need a new Schtick. The logical fallacy thing is very, very old for you.

Hard to disagree here. Logic is so passe.
