New Orleans....vs USL
Though some think there are downsides to this match up, I think it would be great.
First, WHEN we win it, we'd have a leg up on them in recruiting.
Second, it would be a near sell out. Sadly, we do travel well, but we do ok. USL would help fill the dome and the crowd would look great on TV.
Yes, I know people will throw rocks. But I'd welcome a New Orleans Carrier Bowl against the Cajuns
-
Re: New Orleans....vs USL
Sell out? Nah. I think I'd pass. Though, some here have argued that playing a 10-win ULL would mean more than a 6 win P5.

This game couldn't sell out The Joe or Cajun Field, but you think it would sell out the Dome? Pass.

Re: New Orleans....vs USL
I agree with others who have said that none of the bowls are remembered except the NY6 and playoff other than by the fans of those teams. At this point, Skippy is just coaching to keep the 10,000 die hard fans engaged.
-
Re: New Orleans....vs USL
This would be one of my top preferences (the bowl - not necessarily the opponent). It would sell out - pretty sure they only use the lower bowl for NO Bowl. I think 35-40,000 would be great turnout for that matchup.
I don't mind play UL-L. I think they should be a regular on ALL of our athletics schedules. Pretty sure football is the only one that isn't.
-
Re: New Orleans....vs USL
What’s sad is I view our 9-3 season as a huge disappointment. I welcome the possibility of playing ULL in a bowl game this year. Not too long ago we pounded them in Ruston. Curious to see how things would go now. It could be comforting. It could me more of the same blah and eh. It could be a harsh reality check.
-
Re: New Orleans....vs USL
They have a leg up on recruits because of the stipend. The only way we can offset that it to beat them on the field. FCOYHCSH can do it!
-
Re: New Orleans....vs USL
If everybody wants LA Tech to play in the NO Bowl this year, then put Tech against Saturday's winner of the game between Appy St and ULALA. The winner of that CCG game becomes the undisputed champion of the Sunbelt Conference. LA Tech has NEVER lost a game to a Sun Belt football team. Now's the Sunbelt's chance to break the curse! LOL!
Of course, if LA Tech wins the game, then Sunbelt fans should stop all this nonsense about how good the Sunbelt is these days, and openly acknowledge LA Tech's dominance. ;) I'm up for it, because I think we need to swat them back a couple of notches every few years anyway.
-
Re: New Orleans....vs USL
This would be a "who cares" bowl and match-up. Hopefully despite our late season screw ups, we will end up in Dallas, or even the I-Bowl against a better opponent. The NO Bowl does nothing for TECH. We need to be somewhere it will help us. No one cares about the NO Bowl- I can't say I have ever even watched it- including when TECH played there. I simply followed the scores on ESPN while at Disney having fun.

So is this gonna replace Title 9 as the new boogeyman?

Re: New Orleans....vs USL
On one hand I'll say having to play ull in a bowl is just deserts for this Tech team. We are not very good anyway. On the other hand...just say "No!"

The above highlighted will never happen. Their fans and ADM aren't rational thinkers; never have been and never will be.
I'm all for Dallas vs. a P5 or the I-Bowl vs a P5 ACC team.

I hope we play them. Would be a well attended game and chance for bragging rights in state.

No bragging rights are if we take down LSU!

If we were to take out any other Louisiana school...no one would know one way or the other!

High school athletes who are being recruited by both schools would. IMO, that's the most important thing.
Our fan base is worn out from all the drama and "once again what could have been".

But does winning overcome the lower stipend? I doubt it.

That's the smartest thing you've said in a long time. Very true.

Re: New Orleans....vs USL
Heard a rumor that Ohio State knew about Chase Young's issues a while back but chose to deal with it prior to games vs. bottom dwellers Maryland and Rutgers. They knew they could not ignore it, so they picked the time to announce the two-game suspension.
But, please don't tell HD this, he'll just say, "See, I told ya so!"

See, I told ya so. :D
Yep, that's EXACTLY how the issue should have been handled for our guys too. J'Mar & his stooges could have been penalized in games against Grambling, UMASS, Bowling Green, UTEP, etc.... There were plenty of losers on our schedule this year to manage this better.
But see, the folks at Ohio State are smarter than we are. They know how to MANAGE bad stuff like this so it is least impactful. LA Tech however, manages bad things so they are MOST impactful. But don't tell D80.....he thinks he's on a roll.

Re: New Orleans....vs USL
Some Appy State fans are saying they are only interested in playing FAU as no other CUSA team is worthy. That's SOME of their fans. Others are more resigned to their place in the world of CFB. I would think USM vs. Appy State in the NO Bowl works well.

Appy St has gained respect precisely because their fans do not accept the scraps from the table. Same with UCF. They WANT to be at the big boys table and they're fighting to get there. People respect that.

Re: New Orleans....vs USL
People who think we should decline an invitation to play a legitimate top 20 team in New Orleans, please explain your argument.
-
Re: New Orleans....vs USL
Does it really matter who & where
Even if we play close enough for our fan base to travel easy I don’t expect good support this year
Of all our options a game in Shreveport against a P5 might generate some decent interest
-
Re: New Orleans....vs USL
All I know is Skip likes to take a nose dive every season and then brag about his bowl streak. If you combine the 2 events into 1 thought, you'd conclude that Skip takes a nose dive each season to end up in bowls he can win to keep his streak alive and pad his resume, but I try not to draw a line between the 2 events.
-
Re: New Orleans....vs USL
I don’t want the NO Bowl, but I haven’t seen anyone saying decline an invitation-hopefully TECH would never be that stupid.

No one is talking about us declining a bowl invite. Having preferences where another bowl opponent trumps a belch opponent does not equate to "let's not bowl." Besides, in this case, it was some Appy State fans expressing a desire to avoid someone....CUSA.
-
Re: New Orleans....vs USL
By "decline" I mean we have an option to play in New Orleans against a top 20 team or in Shreveport against a more recognizable brand who had a down year. I'm not even saying we have the option, but I'm saying if we do have the option. I'm going to the game either way and it's easier for me to go to Independence. But all the trashing of App State is hypocritical. The "separation" due to conference affiliation is dubious. There are some teams in G5 conferences that are better than teams in P5 conferences. I'm not into propagating myths just because some people believe them.

Me neither, but we are trying to sell tickets to people who believe those “myths”.
That said, it probably doesn’t matter all that much either way. I went to the last NO Bowl and had a great time.
-
Re: New Orleans....vs USL
Well, as a regular to this board, you know I am not one of those "trashing of App State." They are good and would be tough to beat for any CUSA team, including us, and Appy State would compete very well with the majority of the teams that will ultimately bowl, even most of the P5s. Of our previous 5 bowl opponents Navy was the best and that was reflected in the competitiveness of the game. We blew out our other 4 opponents. Appy State would be very much like Navy was...a tough opponent.
As a CFB fan I think Appy State is better than Louisiana Tech in 2019. But, not much better and so on any given day we can beat them on a neutral field. Also, while Appy State is also unbeaten in modern bowl history, 4-0, Skippy seems able to prepare his team for bowls, so I would fully expect the Dawgs to have every chance to beat Appy State in a bowl game this month...just have to make the plays.
Last year Appy smoked MTSU 45-13 in the NO Bowl. Yeah, CUSA is so much better...:icon_roll:
All that said I would prefer a P5 opponent and the Indy Bowl would be okay, since I don't really wish to drive any distance. The quick trip to New Orleans (Friday) was enough to last me for awhile. But, I also don't have the same confidence in this version of Skippy's Bowl Dawgs as I have in the past. When we beat Illinois and Navy we had a good QB... Playing a decent P5 might spell the end of the bowl win streak. Just saying. Of course, regardless, I will make every effort to attend the bowl in person and once there will be a very vocal supporter of our Dawgs.

Why would we?....Just because BOTH times that Skip Holtz has gotten really close to winning a CUSA title at LA Tech, he has managed to conveniently sabotage himself and his own team with key player suspensions the night before kickoff(s)?

All three. He intentionally lost at USM in 2016 too. I think he cost us home field that year didn’t he?

The Dawgs should have been in the CUSA Championship Game. About an hour before the game, I told my brother that UAB would get their asses kicked!!!! I also told him that whatever bowl game they get....they will get their asses kicked in that game too!!

Don't forget 2014 at ODU that cost CCG homefield that year too.
It is a habit that seems to be more than just merely a series of coincidences.

That was the double-whammy year. After he lost home field at ODU, he suspended a bunch of starters to make sure we lost at Marshall (like this year).

I wonder if any will be academically ineligible.

Academically ineligible meant the university suspended them. Coach had no say, but he would have already known before the Rice blowout win.

Tulane vs. USM
So, that means that EVERY FBS team in Louisiana got a bowl bid, a perfect 4 for 4.

That's a COMBINED score of 86-8. And yet, LA Tech still managed to lose 20-14, to a team that literally CAN'T SCORE TD's!

Re: New Orleans....vs USL
Yes, because the game plan was to save up for the last offensive play of the game. That and 30 yard punts that didn't flip the field.
