Re: La Tech OC Todd Fitch Leaving for Vanderbilt?
Comments from Vandy fans...
"Didn't his team score only 14 points in the biggest game of the year?"
and my favorite...
"This hire should help us secure 13th place in the conference."
Chins up Vandy fans, you're getting Rummel Raider Donovan Kaufmann. You'll be fine.

Re: La Tech OC Todd Fitch Leaving for Vanderbilt?
All I can say is, God is definitely looking out for Louisiana Tech. This is the absolute BEST thing that could have happened to LA Tech. It's inexplicable why anyone --especially an SEC school-- would want to hire Todd Fitch. But, there it is! Yeeee Hiiiiii!!!
Now we need to go hire an OC who's going to light it up offensively. Fitch ran off a lot of our fans with his boring offenses. It shouldn't be too difficult to find a much better replacement.
-
Re: La Tech OC Todd Fitch Leaving for Vanderbilt?
Skip is the OC. Fitch is his eyes from the press box. Not sure what he’s done to get a look from another school, except maybe help J’Mar to a great Senior season.... that’s a pretty big accomplishment though.

LMAO! How many times do you have to be told? Holtz micromanages his coordinators, especially OC. Holtz is the OC and calls the plays.

Any change in the offensive coaching of this offense has got to be good. Even if it's only "new input" that Holtz will get from a new OC.

That’s a good point. Do you think Rattay tried to or could have given any input?
We did run some wide open offense with Higgins and Driskill, so Holtz is capable of doing it.
But he almost always puckers up in tight situations.
-
Re: La Tech OC Todd Fitch Leaving for Vanderbilt?
What we need if for a Holtz to have a momentary lapse of good judgement and hire a guy who will stand up to him and do his job.

Yes because winning against the worst competition means much more than being team MVP. LOL at Fitch being responsible for NOT coaching up Smith.

That’s right - Skip is OC and unless his 3 favorite plays are workin his offensive ingenuity is notta. Skip doesn’t want to go out a get a good OC he just wants a QB coach with OC title

With a decent QB playing against Miami, we win that game by 25 to 30 points. We had open receivers in the right places. J'Mar finished the game 13 of 28 (46%), for 163 yds, 1 TD & 1 INT. Not stellar numbers.

We play at VANDY next year.......feel even better about that one now!!!!!!

Re: La Tech OC Todd Fitch Leaving for Vanderbilt?
More anxious to see the replacement than the loss of Fitch. I think whomever else comes in can design more running plays than the simple Read Option. If they are allowed to operate that way.

Rattay will also be available since he won't have a job with Washington cleaning house.

If Holtz lets him run the kind of offense we ran when he was QB here, I might forgive him and say he can come back (after abandoning us).
-

Pete Thamel says Joe Sloan is a name to watch to replace Fitch. Current Co-Offensive Coordinator & Assistant Head Coach. Been here Holtz's entire tenure.

Getting an NFL job means he didn't "abandon" Tech.
My question would be whether Rattay would want to come back even as the outright named OC when Tech already has an OC who masquerades as a head coach except during bowl season.

It was kind of tongue in cheek for all those folks that maintain Jack Abraham was a Tech quitter because he refused to just sit on the bench and knew he'd never have a chance to play here.

Joe Sloan is wayyy smarter than many people understand. Look at his bio. The guy is a great recruiter and an offensive genius. Promote asap or someone else will.

Re: La Tech OC Todd Fitch Leaving for Vanderbilt?
I still want Matt Dunigan to return to Tech. I know it’s a long shot and probably will never happen but I can hope.

Rob Likens is available, right? If we wanted something a little more Air Raidish.

Re: La Tech OC Todd Fitch Leaving for Vanderbilt?
The only function of a Holtz OC is to sit in the booth.
Pay a grad student 36000 to do it.

He's the only coach who has been with Holtz his entire time at Tech. Why hasn't he already been hired away.

Yahoo sports reported Garrett and the entire coaching staff had been fired. Two hours later the article was pulled from their sight. It may have been a little premature. 😁

My understanding is Garrett's contract is up as of midnight tonight, and that is when the ax will fall.

Re: La Tech OC Todd Fitch Leaving for Vanderbilt?
Jacob Peeler would be a good hire. He played here under Bicknell then was a GA under Sonny and went to Cal with Sonny. When Sonny was fired, he went to Ole Miss to coach receivers. Jake Spavital at Texas State (who was Sonny's OC when Franklin left Cal) hired him to be the OC at Texas State. He's on his way up. He wouldn't get to call plays here, but he may want to come back to Tech if the money was right?

I wouldn't mind getting somebody from Sonny's coaching tree for OFFENSE. Defense, no. But we need an infusion of offensive excitement, and most likely somebody who thinks like Sonny could do it.

I don't think he would ever embrace the Tony Franklin System of basically "basketball on grass" (60-56 scores every game). But I think someone like Peeler could bring some new ideas to get another TD or two per game... which would be awesome.

I totally agree. Time to give him his shot. He's earned it and will be a bigger asset for us on offense.
-
Re: La Tech OC Todd Fitch Leaving for Vanderbilt?
Promote Sloan.
Perusing the coaches in Louisiana, Michael Spurlock (36) at SLU sounds interesting as WR coach. He's from Mississippi, played at Ole Miss (behind Eli Manning and under Coach O), and spent 8+ yrs in the NFL. He's been moving up in his coaching career.
"A native of Indianola, Mississippi, Spurlock is entering his fourth season of his coaching career. His stints include stops at Philadelphia High School (2015, assistant coach), Coahoma Community College (2016, running backs coach/special teams coordinator), Dallas Cowboys (2016, special teams and defensive backs assistant) and UTSA (2017, special teams quality control/linebacker assistant/special teams quality control)."

He wanted an opportunity when Skip was originally hired. He didn't get it. I wouldn't say he had any hard feelings. They had no previous connection, and apparently Skip didn't think he had done enough at a lower level to earn a shot. I'd love to see him get come back home, but I'm also not sure how interested he is in taking an QB job that is OC in name only. He wants to be the one calling the plays.
-
Re: La Tech OC Todd Fitch Leaving for Vanderbilt?
I'm not sure we could afford this guy (he made $300K this past year), but it might be worth a shot.

His DC’s have a very good track record of moving up.
I agree with Boxer on Sloan. He knows Skip will and the “transition” would be very smooth.
-
Re: La Tech OC Todd Fitch Leaving for Vanderbilt?
Simon, Kubik, Sloan, Likens. All with good Tech connections. You could sell me on any of those I think.
Local (but not Tech) guy I'd be curious about for DC would be Grambling's Todd. Looks like they've been pretty good against their conference.
But there are also usually several experienced guys coming off of bad seasons and looking to rehab their image some like Diaco or Diaz. I wonder if our budget will mean we have to mix and match - maybe one coordinator with more experience and the other in a first time calling the shots deal?

That's actually a good idea. Texas reassigned their OC too. YOU know these guys are talented, or they would have never been there in the first place. Maybe one of 'em needs a clean break.
Skip is very well connected to U of Texas. His son rode the bench there a few years and graduated from there in May of 2019. If anybody could pull one of those guys to Ruston, it's Skip.

REDskin management probably found out what a poor job he did with Smith at EllAyeTech before he screwed up the whole REDskin program.
BTW, how do they get away with the REDskin thing? I heard it was Tim Rattay's fault.
