Skip Holtz coaching rumors

Re: Report: Skip Holtz interested in Mississippi State job
He can be interested all he wants but he would do horrible at Mississippi State and I think most people can see that. He would be in a conference division with Nick Saban, Jimbo Fisher, Guz Malzahn, Lane Kiffin, and Orgeron's LSU team that's now rolling. We complain that Skip beats the teams he is supposed to beat and loses to the teams he is expected to lose to. He would automatically lose 5 games every year by that metric in the SEC West and he would be lucky to be get as high as 5th in it. But maybe they have low expectations in Starkville. There are better candidates for sure.

At 55, Skip is looking for a job with a golden parachute when he gets canned. That's his retirement plan.

He already has that.
Nothing saying that Miss St is actually interested in him.

Re: Report: Skip Holtz interested in Mississippi State job
Didn't Billy Brewer do this in the day? Or was that Ole Miss?
-
Re: Report: Skip Holtz interested in Mississippi State job
Brewer went to Ole Miss, his alma mater. I believe he was their top target because he played for Vaught during Ole Miss’ glory years.
-
Re: Report: Skip Holtz interested in Mississippi State job
If he wants it, let him go have it. Can’t blame the man for that one bit. But Ruston is a damn easy job - little pressure, 6-7 easy wins a year, etc.
If he bails, it tells me our QB situation is worse than we believe.
Also, if he leaves, let every assistant coach, sans the strength coach walk thy day.
Holts took us to 6 straight bowls but never could get all the pieces together at the right time.
IF, if he takes the MSU job, he will be fired in less than 3 seasons. He will be lucky to have a .400 winning percentage after 3 years.
Hell, he will lose to Southern Miss at least once when MSU plays them.

We went to Ole Miss after being HC at SELa.

He came to us from Southeastern, then we to Old Miss.
Also, he took the Ole Miss job, then proceeded to get us beaten by Delaware in a 1AA playoff game.

Is that King James English? I hope it's not a prophecy. I think a lot of Tech's football success comes from the strength and conditioning coach.

Skip does not beat all the teams he should beat. If he did he would have at least a couple of Conference championships by now.

And probably would have been hired away with multilple 10-11 win seasons.

We should pay him more. He almost got an interview this time.

....We should cut Holtz's pay in half, because now he has damaged our recruiting. He just let every recruit in the south know that he probably won't hang around for their next 4-yrs. What an idiot.

We've already got 20 signatures, so I think this "news" will have basically ZERO effect on our recruiting. By next year it will be forgotten. Further, these recruits would also rather be at a P5 than Tech, so I don't think that's some sort of crazy revelation that a coach would prefer more money and being in the best conference in the nation.

Exactly. This was never an big deal. He has never been "in the running" for any job outside of Ell Aye Tech. One guy tweets and the rumor mill begins. Naturally Holtz was not going to say he was NOT interested. That would have been less believable than his "we competed" statements.

Holy crap! It was Brad Logan, a reporter for The Clarion-Ledger in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, the home of Southern Miss University. Something very sinister and unethical transpired with his "news".

Looks like Mike Leach is going to be the Miss State HC. That leaves Wazzu needing; maybe Skip will "have interest" there.

Clarion-Ledger reports Mike Leach Leaving Washington State for Miss. State
Tyler Horka writes in the Jackson, Miss., Clarion-Ledger that Washington State head football coach Mike Leach is “to be next Mississippi State football head coach.”

Not a surprise. Moo State and Mike Leach might just be a really good match.

I agree. I like Leach because his style of play allows a less-resourced school in a remote environment to win more games than they probably should. It worked at TX Tech and WSU. And it will work at Miss St. He may never win the SEC championship, but his team's will be competitive, and sneak up on a lot of better resourced programs. This should be a good hire for MSU.

Re: Skip Holtz coaching rumors
I still do not believe MS ST was ever interested in Holtz. There was a gap between him and the level of folks we know they talked to. 6 bowl wins does not mean much when over half the FBS gets to go bowling every year. We have a couple of descent bowl games but 4 of them were nothing to brag about. We won 10 games but none against a top 50 and got beat by two teams in the cellar. I believe any interest was on his side only.

I just thought it was embarrassing when Holtz started campaigning for the job.

There’s no evidence he did. A “journalist” tweeted something with no corroboration that he disclosed. Didn’t actually attribute the info to anyone, he just stated it as a fact.

It's becoming pretty obvious that the power brokers in CFB don't seem to be enthralled with what he is doing here and thinking it will work at an A-5 school...

Skip much like Konkol and pretty much all our other coaches are not going anywhere.
Our hires are safe.

We'll never know who they actually talked to or considered (or who would have been interested or actually expressed an interest) but I'm pretty sure I saw Mark Hudspeth's name. If there is a gap between their head coaching records, it'd be the other direction, right?
-
Re: Skip Holtz coaching rumors
Judge and Leach obviously for beginners. Holtz is not a pimple on Leaches ass with that conservative crap he rolls out there. Hudspeth was probably just mentioned due to his prior employment.

Assistants continue to get hired away......not Skip

Re: Skip Holtz coaching rumors
I think Skip has done a tremendous job of building the Louisiana Tech program. But.....
Most power programs conduct coaching searches using consultants. Some make that public, while others keep that fact private.
All of those consultants pay former coaches or other analysts to pour over tape and/or attend games to strictly watch a head coach and his staff. Texas and LSU both used consultants who obtained sideline passes to watch Tom Herman during games in 2016.
Unfortunately for Skip his win ugly approach the past couple of seasons has certainly hurt him if he's seriously looking for a P5 job. The "play-not-to-lose" problems we had late in games from 2014 to 2017 can't help either. Could a program like Baylor overlook that approach? Perhaps.
Just to give a few examples. This past season in the Bowling Green game 15 or our first 17 run plays were the zone read give. The numbers were similar in the win at FAU in 2018. We tried that approach against Southern Miss in 2018. We didn't turn the football over but still lost the game. Skip calls his own plays and at times he looks like he's calling plays in a game coached by Bo or Woody during the 10-year war.
Couple that with the late game problems we had against P5 opponents like Kansas State, Arkansas, and South Carolina (we had 4th quarter leads in all three).
Can a consultant sell that to an athletic director? Could an AD sell that to his biggest boosters? Maybe someday but it hasn't happened yet.
-
Re: Skip Holtz coaching rumors
Next year's Egg Bowl is now Lane Kiffin vs. Mike Leach. Just got a little more interesting than it has been. The press conferences should be interesting for sure!

Our DC do because he lets them coach.
I’m actually surprised that Fitch did. Knowing how little he actually uses an OC. I guess Vandy needed some eyes in the sky.

Re: Skip Holtz coaching rumors
I wonder if any assistants from North Dakota State would like a nice bump in pay? They won their EIGHTH FCS National Championship in nine years yesterday. The average assistant's salary is $47,478 per year.
How much does an Assistant Football Coach make at University of North Dakota in North Dakota?

More than most coaches, Skip Holtz could really benefit from a good OC. It's the missing link in Skip's program, and it's the primary reason Tech fans are bored with Skip. P5 school's won't hire Skip because he hasn't shown that he can hire, manage and get along well with a strong minded, successful, OC. And to win consistently at the P5 level, a head coach has to be able to do that.
With very few exceptions (Mike Leach perhaps, being one), a head coach at the P5 level can't wing it by himself as "co-OC" the way Skip does. It's bush league, and it's very limiting, creatively.

You're on a roll HD! You nailed it again. Just look at Coach O. He went from being barely a mediocre coach to being a "genius" thanks to Joe Brady, and!!! leaving his OC(s) alone to do their jobs.

I think the fascinating thing for me about LSU is that no one has hired Joe Brady away yet. The dude can flat out coach, but is 2nd fiddle to Steve Ensminger at LSU?
He’s easily an OC or better at P5 school.

Ensminger will retire in the next year or 2. Brady will likely get a nice bump even if he has still sharing the role. He will probably be the OC and name his salary at LSU soon.
-
Re: Skip Holtz coaching rumors
Brady just agreed to a contract extension at LSU that'll prevent him from leaving for a job at another college for the next three years, but it won't prevent him from leaving for a job with an NFL team. Rumor in Baton Rouge is that he's probably going to get offered the OC job with the Carolina Panthers after tonight's NC game.

Brady is the real deal. They are running an NFL offense at LSU. (And apologies to Ensminger who has coached forever and his offenses were never this good, I believe most of it is Brady)

So if he leaves LSU for a head college football coach job do they kill his wife or what?

Aside from the "t" word... good post.
We need to add to the rushing attack. There is no creativity with the boring read option. Pat White or Lamar Jackson aren't walking through our doors anytime soon. We can run that well against the slower weaker teams in the conference, but against the big boys and upper tier CUSA teams, that doesn't work.

Re: Skip Holtz coaching rumors
Saw an article that stated that Holtz hit some bench mark this year that automatically triggered a 1 year extension on his contract? Is this true? If he posts a .750 win % he just tacks on another year? His only bonus opportunities should be P5 wins and conference championships.

Yep. That's pretty old news. For a 12-game season, if he wins 9 games, he gets a 1-yr extension of his contract.
