Several swing games here. This season is our opportunity to make a big, big splash. But isn't every season?
CUSA is, not shockingly, the worst FBS conference (and especially CUSA West). I look forward to many posts about culling the weak, but never any actual action taken.
https://i.imgur.com/64LnaXX.png
I'm thinking the following. Based on the win percentages, our most likely record is 7-4 (rather than the straight up 9-2).- Baylor is close in the first half (down 10 at the half), but we lose by 21.
- We will beat UNT (a game we're not supposed to win)
- We will lose to UTSA (a game we're not supposed to lose)
- The two remaining losses are Marshall and FIU (last game of the season, Skip will be planning for the bowl game)
- Our final rank will be ~70. Once again, despite having a worse record against lousy opponents, ULL will have a higher rating.

Hey man, I just scrape
I've got no idea if he's going to update the active team list or just let the inactives fall to the bottom
I wasn't thinking of that when I made my final prediction so: 70/130 = #35
Figured it would take a mass panic to break into the Top 40

Re: Blue Dawg's Weekly Sagarin Football Thread 2020
We all know that there needs to be two different playoff systems in FBS. The G5 need their own playoff system perhaps using the bowl system already in place just like the FBS system is now. Of course the better way would be to have a pure playoff system like FCS but that aint gonna happen. Take the conference champs plus top (3) at large and do 8 team playoff for G5 national champ. We can still go to Baylor and get beat in regular season for $. Most years the best of CUSA can play with any of the best in other G5 conferences whether CUSA as a whole is top heavy. I think it irrelevant which G5 conference we are in under the current system. Play for conference championship and the best bowl game you can get into. However, a national championship among G5s would sweetin the pot

I don't know if "we all know that."
I agree that as structured there is little to no hope for a G5 team to win a championship. And that for most practical purposes we probably really do have 5 football divisions in NCAA football, not 4 (or 3, I guess).
But I'm not sure I'm ready to re-split formally to a Div 3, Div 2, FCS, G5, P5 tier system (but if they do this, can they fix the silly naming system - just copy high school or something and have A-AAAAA).

An entirely separate kids table is more insulting than blatant favoritism at the adults table.

As long as there are at large bids we might make the playoff some years.

All great points. We are 1A (FBS)because the FCS (1AA)was a losing proposition.

Re: Blue Dawg's Weekly Sagarin Football Thread 2020
So, Sagarin has us losing to UNT because of the home field? Doesn't Jeff Sagarin know LA Tech always beat UNT at Apogee?
By the way, I certainly hope we are better than UNT. The Lean Green gave up 31 points and 531 yds of offense to an FCS school (Houston Baptist) last week.

Sagarin is not real bullish on us over the next few weeks. I know it's early but the rankings seem more volatile than usual this year.

No way I see us losing 5 games this year.

Always happens after we play an FCS team. I think we’ll be ok, but our next month or so won’t be easy.

Re: Blue Dawg's Weekly Sagarin Football Thread 2020
CUSA defenses have all looked pretty loose. What is it, like 10 giving up 30+ ppg? Of course it includes ours but we still have some guys coming back, we also seem to have the offense to back it up.
Anthony can tear these guys apart with proper protection.

We "recover" wins back from UNT and FIU. The ratings continue to swing wildly.
Based on recent and non-recent history, I think we destroy a weak UTEP team easily, swagger into the Marshall game acting like Anthony just won a Heisman, and get our teeth punched out.

Losing to good teams still does more for you in Sagarin than beating bad teams.

Truth. Strength of schedule is huge (which I think introduces some false inflation at the top, but whatever)

Not sure about Sagarin rating, but the Cajuns move back into the Top 25 in both the AP and Coaches polls at #23 in both.

Fellers, I'm beginning to think we might not win a conference championship this season.
But we're going to our 7th straight bowl game!

Re: Blue Dawg's Weekly Sagarin Football Thread 2020
I see it the same way, about to go on a 3-game losing streak, and then finish out 4-0 to end 7-4 and then go bowling. 8-4, baby!
UAB? Hmmm...could be we can catch them in the right situation. If we get a W the rest of this month, I think it'll most likely happen on the very last day...Happy Halloween!
-
Re: Blue Dawg's Weekly Sagarin Football Thread 2020
I think we get one of them. Im glad Marshall is first of the 3, its the least crucial as far as getting to the CCG.

Right now I don't think we have a snow ball's chance in hell of beating UAB. They are far too big and too physical for our little boys. We have a much better chance of beating Marshall than UAB, because Marshall is a much weaker team on the road than when playing at home. Probably two TD's weaker. Even the Marshall fans will tell you that.
Still not sold on UTSA. I watched their game yesterday. True, they played BYU much better than we did. But, they still have QB issues. For the longest time in that game, they couldn't buy a score. But again, UTSA is more physical than our little guys.
Our best chance for a win out of these three is Marshall.
-

I am looking at this from our POV. Maybe by the UAB game the Dawgs will be at full strength and UAB will come into Ruston with the big head, expecting a rather easy time of it. If we dress the same guys Saturday that played last night...whoa! MU 45 Tech 13. Hopefully we'll have some of our guys back though and it won't get that awful. UTSA is going to kill us. You can write that one off.
So, I think we'll get beat fairly badly by MU, final pounding depending on who we have dressed out. UTSA will punch us in the mouth, something like 31-14, maybe worse. So, UAB sets up as an Upset Alert! They will be coming off back to back home games, beating WKU and then playing the mighty, and maybe still ranked, Ragin Cajuns. UAB will beat ULL and consider that a big W. Then, oh my, they have to bother with going to Ruston to play a team that has been smashed the previous two weeks. The arrogant pricks will blow us off...and the trap is set.
Or...maybe they'll just kill us too. :icon_roll:

Re: Blue Dawg's Weekly Sagarin Football Thread 2020
The good news: there is only one good team left on our schedule.
The bad news: we are not very good.
Now, we could get better when we get our tackles back, but we’re real bad with the back-ups.
Marshall May be better than BYU. Other than them we COULD win the rest.
-
Re: Blue Dawg's Weekly Sagarin Football Thread 2020
Marshall and UAB are good and UTSA looked better against BYU than we did by quite a bit. That’s 3 rough games for us.

Just FYI.....our starting left tackle Willie Allen, opted out of the 2020 season. He's not coming back. At least not this season. So we better learn to play without him.

Campbell and Lewis started at the OT spots against BYU. Neither played last night. With Hankinson also being in and out, we were playing preseason #3s and 4s on the depth chart for stretches last night.

Thanks for the update, Frisco. So, why did Campbell and Lewis not play last night? Surely the local media is asking Holtz these questions?
Also, why are we so thin in the OL? We seem to have plenty of healthy RB's, WR's, etc.... What's happening with our OL?

Apparently virus contact tracing if not positive tests. Conference protocols have to be followed under contact tracing. Just be glad we don't have the Big Ten protocols because those are 21 days to sit out.

That's just embarrassing. To think we would be 29-point dogs to any fellow CUSA team is just pathetic.
-
Re: Blue Dawg's Weekly Sagarin Football Thread 2020
Not sure where 29 is coming from. ESPN says Marshall -13. If our tackles are out again, that line will move further away from us, but it won’t approach 29.

Our own Tech rules have us using tracing not positive tests, not just CUSA. It's probably different for football than for "regular" students.

The BYU prediction was spot on. We have not covered the Sagarin spread all year (other than HBU, spread was about -30 and we won by 28).
Not saying I agree that we'll be +29...just that we are so bad it's not out of the realm of possibility.

Damn. How good do you guys think Marshall is? Have you even watched them play? I have. They are not BYU. And they are two TD’s weaker on the road than at home. They have a freshman QB. If we can get healthy, we have a solid chance at beating Marshall. Get a grip guys.

They aren’t nearly as good as BYU. It’s a conference game at home. I don’t see us getting blown out.

Appalachian State also held them to 17 points, the lowest of the 3 teams App has played and that was a home game.
I can see their offense struggling with a fresh QB on the road. We’d have to take advantage of that. I think our defense is settling in a bit.

Man I wish I knew what Vegas is thinking. LOL
Probably not as much as we would think though. Yesterday was that QB's first start of the season, which he earned with his performance against BYU. That didn't carry over to yesterdays game. He was 16 for 31, 155 yards and a TD, he did run for 47 yards on 10 carries. Not horrible, but nothing like what he did against BYU. Those stats are not much different from the other QB.
A side note Army was playing without their 1st and 2nd QB and rotated their 3rd and 4th QB.

IMO, option system QBs are rarely the difference makers unless they are REALLY great passers.

I don't agree with that. Great option QBs make a huge difference over just good option QBs. Yeah, an aspect of making them great is the capacity to throw the ball "well enough." But it's really their own running ability and, most importantly, their ball-handling skills and reading defenses. Like a great PG in hoops. They seem to have eyes in the back of their heads and almost a 6th-sense for outguessing defenders. It's often a razor-thin thing. Option QB "guesses" right and executes the right option on a play and it pops wide open. How many times have you seen a fullback pop thru a hole and go for a big gainer? It's not luck, it's the QB seeing right at the snap the defense is vacating the middle.

It's not luck, it's the QB seeing right at the snap the defense is vacating the middle.
They are great athletes playing for Army. It's not like any of them are THAT much better than the others. Older, more seasoned, better at certain skills like passing, etc..

I just want to go to Tech football games. Unless we can get an FCS on short notice, I want to play ulm

That depends on if UTSA was the only WTF game.

Yes they did. Sagarin has this one at 20, Vegas at 21. Time to shock the nation! Well at least anyone who is paying attention.

No. Fortunately, Skip is not worried.
Because Skip is never worried.

Man, I really hope so.
Y'all don't know what a win here would mean for me smack-wise. I literally go to church essentially on TCU's campus (they rent our parking lot for employee parking!). I can see the stadium from my block. Any P5 win is a big win, but this one for me personally would be among the best possible wins. But it's going to take a heck of a game.

Three and outs will absolutely kill us against TCU. Our defense will be gassed midway through the 1st if we can't sustain some drives.

I wish he would view it as a bowl game- rather than a game that doesn't matter.

I have not checked this for Elo yet, but per Sagarin's quality measure that was the worst game we've played since I've been tracking it in 2016. Now we are underdogs to a Belch team.
