WVU at UAB in 2021-22.
UAB at WVU in 2022-23.
UAB's coach is a friend of Huggins.

Re: 2021-22 Dunkin' Dawgs Basketball Schedule
So, what P5 coach is our coach buddies with that can get us a H&H that can actually draw a crowd?

Isn't this why lsu is coming to Shreveport? that's as close as they'll come.

Kennedy was an assistant to Huggins at Cincinnati and took over on an interim basis once Huggins left. Konkol was an assistant to Jim Larranaga at Miami and at George Mason, that relationship has meant nothing while Konkol has been here.
-
Re: 2021-22 Dunkin' Dawgs Basketball Schedule
Konkol should get H/H with TheU.

I agree in Ruston. Just imagine an ACC team in Ruston.

Re: 2021-22 Dunkin' Dawgs Basketball Schedule
we should b able to score some big time competition, but HuggieBaby is a Top 5 coach.
Even if he doesn’t stomp uab into a puddle, he survives.
I would bet on the puddle though...
-
Re: 2021-22 Dunkin' Dawgs Basketball Schedule
i want a home and home with Florida, NOW.
Heck, even a road game at Florida would b nice.
A’int gonna happen...
We would b the puddle stompers and that little simp that used to coach here would finally get fired.

He finished 15-10, including a 75-70 OT win over VA Tech in the 1st round of the NCAA Tournament, but lost to Oral Roberts 81-78, in round 2. His seat may be too warm to schedule a team like Tech --that could actually beat 'em-- OOC.

Exactly, but if he had a pair he would play us. He doesn’t...
maybe when he lands at Stetson we will see him again.

Dawgs don't play MTSU next year Men's Hoops league slate released by C-USA - Middle Tennessee State University Athletics (goblueraiders.com)
Quote:
The difference from past C-USA schedules prior to the 2020-21 season – which was changed drastically due to COVID-19 health and safety protocols – is the divide into East and West divisions which will see each team play their divisional opponents at home and away while facing only six of their seven cross-divisional foes, three at home and three on the road.

Are they (Bama) also playing Baylor and Gonzaga? Between us and the two championship game teams, the Tide really testing themselves OOC.

Notice how that headline includes Junior's name! Get use to it, because we're going to see a lot of that going forward. Junior is a hot commodity, and people are going to want to come see him play. He is going to sell some tickets. By February, Junior will be a household name, and by March LA Tech will be in the NCAA Tournament.

I think you're right. His throwback game and, I believe, his unique build only add to his appeal.

Ran into P.J. Brown today, he was touring Melrose Plantation. Had the opportunity to chat with him for a spell. He brought up his team was the last to dance in 1991 and said that was ridiculous given the talent we've had. He mentioned Paul Millsap in particular. He wants to see Junior play in person, so plans to catch a game this year. He lives in Atlanta, Ga.

Well, that ought to make it easy for LA Tech to work with the 11 remaining teams who haven't finalized their schedules (with Tech being the 12th).

Hoping there will be tickets at the gate for game against the tiggers. Our group of 6 wants to go, but the convenience fees for online purchase are a deterrent. I was told the fees push the ticket price close to $50 each.

Yeah, the "convenience" fees are ridiculous. Tech has been promoting $32 tickets online for several days, but Ticketmaster bumps the price up to $51 with their fees. Cheapest seats you can get on TM right now are $25 seats for $44.

Just looked at our schedule, we are set to play NAIA "Crowley's Ridge College" in Ruston on Dec 22. Living in Arkansas my entire life (except for the 4 years of Tech), I've never heard of this Arkansas based college. This is some lazy scheduling.
It would of been better to schedule Grambling.

We can definitely start our bench and win this game. Crowley Ridge (1-10) is bad. They did beat Pensacola Christian last week. You can see their entire game here.

Can someone explain to me why most Mid-Major and lower Division 1 basketball programs schedule multiple of these NAIA games every year? It’s not something you see in Baseball. If it’s about $, which I’m sure it is, then why not Grambling, APB, Southern? Would playing Grambling or the like hurt your RPI more? I’m sure there’s an explanation but I’m failing to see one.

That used to be the case.
If you play a bad Division 1 team, it counts against your average RPI. If you play an NAIA or Division 2 school it just shows up in the rankings they use as one less game (they leave it out). So you get essentially another practice/win/chance to sell a little popcorn but the risk isn't there like it would be for playing the #300 Div I team (where even a big win just crushes your RPI or whatever the new one is).
I imagine they're cheaper, too.
I also grew up in Arkansas and had never heard of this school. I was able to guess the location based on the name. I think they only have like 600 students total.

No RPI/NET effect like a sub 250 SWAC or MEAC school and you pay them $2500 to $5000 as compared to $25,000+
Ideally we want home and home 150 RPI/NET games with SLC, SBC etc. or one off money games against quality opponents
When you win - it makes it very difficult to get guarantee games (and the quality sub 150 home and homes)

Alternative approach --
1) Accept that the auto-bid is a CUSA team's only likely path to the NCAAs.
2) Schedule nearby opponents to maximize local interest and attendance, and to hell with RPI.

The pool of OOC home and away schools we might be interested in will grow after next year. And will include schools that we have had some sort of relationship with. I wonder if that will help.

Probably not since we are beating most of them already...
-
Re: 2021-22 Dunkin' Dawgs Basketball Schedule
I'm for adding two more money games and re-investing the money back into the program and dropping two of the NAIA games
Konkol's history on the basketball side is he usually gets a skin or two OOC every year, atleast every other year
During our OOC schedule our folks are more interested in HS football than college basketball so I don't think we would see a great impact at the gate either way

Well, that and a couple of the ones leaving maybe would fall into that "hurts more than it helps even with a win" category anyway.
Wouldn't UTSA typically be south of 200? And USM would have been at least last year.

Yes - lower half of present conference line-up is dreadful
-
Re: 2021-22 Dunkin' Dawgs Basketball Schedule
I'd like to keep playing UNT in as many sports as possible. We need to keep a presence in DFW.

Football is more important to me (and the geography, and just being in a conference with those schools we like being in a conference with - especially in the West) but boy, one silver lining of the mass CUSA exodus is that our basketball overall strength is actually going up.
Weird to think about since realignment is all so focused on football.

UTA is about to be joining a new conference, and probably one with a little more travel. Maybe we can get that going again. UALR may also be looking for regional games.
Same for Rice and Houston (although I guess SHSU is in the general area).

And now I hear that the fees are paying for the use of the arena. So regardless of how we get tickets, we pay the fee? Can’t get a straight answer from anyone.

It's called "staying in shape" over the holidays. Konkol wants to keep his team in good physical shape and Keep their timing and game time free throw shooting at a high level over the holidays. Scheduling someone like this is a decent (if not perfect) way to do it. The injury risk is pretty low. I think most coaches do something like this so their teams don't lose ground before we start conference play.

Re: 2021-22 Dunkin' Dawgs Basketball Schedule
I think we have an all time losing record against the Gents, so it would have been good to chip away at that deficit.
-
Re: 2021-22 Dunkin' Dawgs Basketball Schedule
When the new CUSA starts up, I hope
-
Re: 2021-22 Dunkin' Dawgs Basketball Schedule
you play your conference opponent twice on the road one year and twice at home the next. This would cut the number of flights in half. Some years it would work to our advantage, others not. It doesn't really matter though because the conference tourney alone will determine whether we dance.
-
Re: 2021-22 Dunkin' Dawgs Basketball Schedule
I know you could play El Paso and NMSU in one trip, but what about FIU or Liberty? And it would be better to have to bus to Huntsville only once ever two years.
-
Re: 2021-22 Dunkin' Dawgs Basketball Schedule
Maybe it could make sense to extend a conference invitation to NDSU with this scheduling scheme.
-
Re: 2021-22 Dunkin' Dawgs Basketball Schedule
Personally, I liked last year's conference schedule the best.....Tech traveled to a CUSA school (say UNT) and played 'em twice in one weekend. The next week a different CUSA opponent (say UAB) traveled to Ruston and took two whippings from us. I thought it was a better format for preparing the CUSA schools for end of season "tournament" basketball too. In tournament basketball, teams play back to back games like that.
-
Re: 2021-22 Dunkin' Dawgs Basketball Schedule
Except when you have to play at WKU twice in a season.

Liberty/Jacksonville State (8 hr drive)
SHSU/LA Tech (4.5 hr drive)
FIU

Tech won one of those games at WKU last year, and IMO, should have won 'em both. That said, I think that format is one of the reason's Tech played so well in the NIT tournament.

It's too bad Marshall panicked and decided to leave CUSA 3.0 for the Sunbelt 3.0. Huntington, WV is only 4.5 hours from Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA.

Game time of the Saturday UTSA game changed to 6:00 PM to eliminate the conflict with baseball.
