Re: No. 14 LA Tech Battles LSU in Key Midweek Matchup
Maybe we will get lucky and the rain will miss us. Looks like the chance has gone down some. If not, it’ll be a good father son afternoon for us anyway.
-
Re: No. 14 LA Tech Battles LSU in Key Midweek Matchup
Just pray for no rain! We need this game and we need to WIN this game!
-
Re: No. 14 LA Tech Battles LSU in Key Midweek Matchup
Channel 5 Alexandria Sports ....a HUGE LSU supporter, and an NSU supporter too since Natchitoches is in their coverage area, did a great job last night previewing the game. I was surprised by the length of the piece which included interviews with both coaches. Lane B. when asked about this being "just" a midweek game said, his guys are motivated and recognize the importance of the game, for a number of reasons. The Sports guy also gave Tech all our due speaking to our record, wins over Arkansas and Ole Miss, etc... Said both teams are nationally ranked and showed some highlights of Tech.
A very fair, and balanced piece, essentially saying the game has EQUAL meaning to both teams. Good job by the Channel 5 sports department.

Re: No. 14 LA Tech Battles LSU in Key Midweek Matchup
Game time has been moved up to 5PM today.

Re: No. 14 LA Tech Battles LSU in Key Midweek Matchup
We might as well call this game with LSU the beginning to Tech’s post season chances or the beginning of the end of the season. It is exactly that big a game. With a win, Tech pretty much keeps pace with a chance at hosting a NCAA round, a loss and that possibility is essentially cut in half. I really hope our team is up to the moment of this historic opportunity. I doubt there’s ever been a bigger one in our baseball history. This is one of those take a big step forward for the program opportunities or be put back in your place games. I know the Dawgs are capable of this victory, it’s just a matter of whether they stay out of their own way to allow it to happen or commit to not being denied and make it happen. I don’t care which direction they go, I just want them to get it done. Go Dawgs, beat LSU!

Re: No. 14 LA Tech Battles LSU in Key Midweek Matchup
Young single, Wells walk, and Bates single load the bases to open the game.
Garcia hits into a double play, but Young scores to make it 1-0 Tech.
Wells scored on a 2-2 passed ball. 2-0 Tech.
Netterville flies out to end the inning.
Quick 8-pitch inning for Whorff even with a 3-2 walk as a 6-4-3 double play wipes out the runner.
-
Re: No. 14 LA Tech Battles LSU in Key Midweek Matchup
Wells scores on passed ball. 2-0 end of top 1.
-
Re: No. 14 LA Tech Battles LSU in Key Midweek Matchup
McConnell stays red-hot with a single to open the 2nd.
Matulia walks.
34 pitches for Hellmers already.
Corona grounds to short to retire Matulia, but a bobble botched the double play. 1 out.
Another double play ball to short by Ray booted and LSU gets no one out. McConnell scores to make it 3-0 with still 1 out.
Pitching change time.
Wild pitch moves the runners to second and third.
Young flies out to short center and the runners can't advance.
Wells flies out to short right to end the inning. Tech 3-0.
1 out double off Whorff.
Walk/wild pitch puts runners at first and third.
Stolen base puts runners at second and third.
Strikeout for out #2.
Fly out to Matulia foul down the right field line. Tech 3-0 after 2.
Whorff at 30 pitches, so that might be it for him.
Rain developing south of Lafayette and Lake Charles. Nothing close to Baton Rouge yet, but it is coming. Need to get this one wrapped up by about 8:00 or so.
-
Re: No. 14 LA Tech Battles LSU in Key Midweek Matchup
Whew! Good to get out of that half inning
-
Re: No. 14 LA Tech Battles LSU in Key Midweek Matchup
Bates doubles to open the 3rd.
Garcia doubles in Bates to make it 4-0.
Netterville strikes out swinging.
McConnell grounds out to second, and Garcia advances to third with 2 out.
Matulia strikes out. Tech 4-0 after 2 1/2.
Martinez replaces Whorff.
An HBP is not the way to start an inning. Tech bullpen better be awake.
Single puts runners at first and third with nobody out.
Called strike three retires Crews. Big out there. And it was a ball.
Stolen base as Corona's throw was off line. And it was still a bang-bang play.
Single makes it 4-1. Runners at second and third as the throw came to the plate and was high but backed up.
Walk loads the bases.
Griffen warming up, so the lead is in danger. Griffen coming in with a 1-0 count. The carousel is getting into gear again.
Out at the plate after a double to make it 4-3 Tech. Matulia circled the wagons on that one and let the ball get over his head.
1-4-3 grounder ends the inning and keeps Tech ahead 4-3 after 3.
Needless to say, it's going to take way more than 4 runs to win this one.
-
Re: No. 14 LA Tech Battles LSU in Key Midweek Matchup
More innings leaving base runners and no crooked numbers.
-
Re: No. 14 LA Tech Battles LSU in Key Midweek Matchup
Is Whorff pitching on Friday? If not, why pull him?
-
Re: No. 14 LA Tech Battles LSU in Key Midweek Matchup
Oh, Lord, here we go with the great bullpen adventure.
Maybe one of them will have a good outing and deliver some solid innings.
-
Re: No. 14 LA Tech Battles LSU in Key Midweek Matchup
Here we go! Can we get out with limited damage?
-
Re: No. 14 LA Tech Battles LSU in Key Midweek Matchup
-
Re: No. 14 LA Tech Battles LSU in Key Midweek Matchup
Please don’t put Griffin in. Here goes our lead. Our bullpen can squander a lead in the blink of an eye.
-
Re: No. 14 LA Tech Battles LSU in Key Midweek Matchup
Well, we don’t have enough arms for each guy to face only 1 hitter. What do we do?
-
Re: No. 14 LA Tech Battles LSU in Key Midweek Matchup
What was our HC thinking? The guy can’t throw strikes
-
Re: No. 14 LA Tech Battles LSU in Key Midweek Matchup
Again, can any position players pitch?
-
Re: No. 14 LA Tech Battles LSU in Key Midweek Matchup
Should have just stuck with Whorff for another inning.

I would have let him go to between 60 and 70 pitches. He would have plenty of time to rest before the weekend. Are there professional trainers who deal strictly in personnel management for sports teams? Most of our coaches could use some workshops in that area.
-
Re: No. 14 LA Tech Battles LSU in Key Midweek Matchup
I’m afraid this game was too important to pull Whorff so early. Now we’ve wasted what he got started and have risked giving LSU the home field momentum. We’re going to have to win hitting the ball.
-
Re: No. 14 LA Tech Battles LSU in Key Midweek Matchup
Corona bomb on the first pitch of the 4th. 5-3 Tech.

Whorff was never going to throw more than about 30 pitches, and he shouldn't have. Can't overstretch a conference starter no matter how important tonight's game might be.

Bright spot is he won't be around long enough to create issues late in the game.
-
Re: No. 14 LA Tech Battles LSU in Key Midweek Matchup
Ray singles and advances to second on a grounder by Young.
Ray scores on an error to make it 6-3 Tech. Replacement SS missed the ball and then kicked it. 6-3 Tech after 3 1/2.
Line of rain is from Eunice to Lafayette to Morgan City. The window of decent weather is closing.
-

This game’s going to be a shootout.

Thanks for the pick me up. Told my wife when he touched the rubber that he would walk the first batter. Good grief what were our coaches thinking?

Re: No. 14 LA Tech Battles LSU in Key Midweek Matchup
Now 6-4 Tech with a 1-out hit, a questionable hit scoring decision, and then another hit. Griffen not fooling anyone as usual.
Another hit makes it 6-5. Way too slow a hook there to bring Follis in.

Re: No. 14 LA Tech Battles LSU in Key Midweek Matchup
any plans to get any outs here?

I hope that was Burroughs’ farewell appearance for Griffen for the season getting to pitch at LSU because he hasn’t helped us in what seems like a long time.

Griffen got 4 outs and allowed 5 hits. I'd rather see innings go to young pitchers who will be around next year than give Griffen chance after chance that he keeps blowing.
And now Follis can't find the plate. 4-pitch walk loads the bases. Tomkins warming up.
HBP ties the game 6-6.
Follis gone after 5 pitches. Tomkins in. Carousel has hit top speed and may spin off its anchor.
I don't care how good Tech's batting and starting pitching is. Tech has to have by far the worst bullpen of any team currently ranked.
-
Re: No. 14 LA Tech Battles LSU in Key Midweek Matchup
We will be embarrassed in the CUSA tournament with this pitching. Great pitching coach hire
-
Re: No. 14 LA Tech Battles LSU in Key Midweek Matchup
Evidently the Dawgs in the bullpen have all been neutered.

Coaching isn’t going to help these guys throw any closer to the plate. It’s on them.

Re: No. 14 LA Tech Battles LSU in Key Midweek Matchup
Single makes it LSU 8-6. Griffen on the hook for a deserved loss if Tech can't come back.
Runners at first and second.
Grounder to Young finally ends it. 8-6 LSU after 4.

I prefer to call them bowlers because their pitches look more like cricket spinners bouncing the ball in front of the wicket.

I’d love to hear Burrough’s reasoning as to why he keeps putting Griffen in.

FWIW our ss cost us in this inning as much as the pitching
-
Re: No. 14 LA Tech Battles LSU in Key Midweek Matchup
It’s looking more and more like this will be Burroughs’ all time best team/season and the worst all at once. He’ll never do any better with his coaching style, his hires and who Tech recruits.

Play at first would have been tough. No chance at second. That's why it was scored a hit, and after watching it I didn't disagree.
-
Re: No. 14 LA Tech Battles LSU in Key Midweek Matchup
Maybe our starters should just be made to throw at least through the 6th inning no matter what.
-
Re: No. 14 LA Tech Battles LSU in Key Midweek Matchup
Worry about the game in front of you. Not the one that is nearly a week away.
Should have kept Worff. Pulling him after 2 was suicide. He can usually at least work himself out of a jam.

How do we screw up bases loaded this time?

Re: No. 14 LA Tech Battles LSU in Key Midweek Matchup
Netterville gets an infield hit to short to open the 5th.
McConnell hit by a pitch.
Matulia files out.
Tornado warning just south of New Iberia.
Corona walks to load the bases with one out.
Ray called out swinging.
Young singles to tie the game 8-8 on an 0-2 pitch.
Wells strikes out. Tied 8-8 after 4 1/2.

He’d be pitching Sunday on 4 days rest and hasn’t pitched in a week. The rainout Sunday was a gift to us for him to be able to go at least 60-70 tonight and be good for another 50+ on Sunday. Starters should be able to go occasionally on 4 days rest without much of a restriction. If they can’t, we have a problem.

Sure, but he plays Sunday, not Friday. He could have at least gone 3, Sunday feels too far away to throw away a game for.

Re: No. 14 LA Tech Battles LSU in Key Midweek Matchup
Would it be in bad taste for our fielders to give the pitchers shit for sucking so bad? Maybe someone should tell them like it is to fire them up or something. As it is now, they suck and nothing is changing.
-
Re: No. 14 LA Tech Battles LSU in Key Midweek Matchup
Matulia has screwed up 2 or 3 times tonight by flinching in on line drives. That is elementary level stuff.

Not in 2021 they can't. And that goes all the way to MLB, even though I don't watch.

Re: No. 14 LA Tech Battles LSU in Key Midweek Matchup
So if we have a lead in the 9th, who do you put out there?
-
Re: No. 14 LA Tech Battles LSU in Key Midweek Matchup
Matulia plays another line drive into a double to open the LSU 5th.
Now first and third with nobody out.
Another infield hit makes it 9-8 LSU. Still nobody out, first and second.
Young throwing error loads the bases, and an HBP makes it 10-8.
Carousel back to max again.
Crigger in.
Grounder for at least one out makes it 11-8. Review on the play at first.
-

This official scorer is awarding hits that should be errors and errors that should have been hits.
Double play erases the error. Review coming. Safe and good call on the review.
Only light rain about to move in. Heavier rain is farther away.
Single makes it 12-8 and a rundown ends the inning. 12-8 LSU after 6.

You don't want them on the injured list either. If Whorff had thrown more than 40 pitches tonight, we would be lucky to get 40-50 pitches out of him on Sunday. At least this way there is a shot to get 60-70 pitches out of him Sunday.
Matulia scorches one caught at first.
Corona flies out.
Ray doubles.
Young safe at first called out. Should be an easy overturn. And it was.
Wells fouls out to end that threat.
12-8 LSU after 6 1/2.
-
Re: No. 14 LA Tech Battles LSU in Key Midweek Matchup
2 losses to ULL and 2 losses to a “down” LSU. No way this team should be ranked 14th. Our relief pitching - 4 innings and 12 runs.
-
Re: No. 14 LA Tech Battles LSU in Key Midweek Matchup
The way we pitch, I’m surprised we have anyone fooled well enough to continue to rank us.

Voters obviously haven't seen the bullpen carousel.
Ellis in.
Light rain starting just about as scheduled.
Single on the first pitch. Any chance Tech had will likely be gone before three outs are recorded here.

Read this and let me know if throwing 40+ tonight would limit him to 40-50 on Sunday. They allow 66 pitches on 4 days rest for 9-10 year olds.

Now 13-8 LSU. Figured Ellis wouldn't put up an egg.
3-run HR changed to a triple after review makes it 15-8.
Would Whorff pitching another 2-3 innings really have made a difference? I don't think so.
Another double now makes it 16-8.
Weather delay will likely end it.

I coach a 12U team and am a bit of an arm care nut. The problem with kids now is pitching too much on little to no rest because of showcases and weekend tournaments. I see it all the time, but we don’t play that game with our kids. With proper rest and arm care, the pitch counts are fine.
