Where did the previous coach go?
We had an interim coach after the resignation of previous coach due to health issues. https://latechsports.com/news/2020/7...l-reasons.aspx
Sounds like a good hire, but it makes me wonder why Taylor wanted to leave Nevada since he has a lot of ties to the school and did well with the program there. If the Tech job is considered a step up, then I'm good with it. I'd love for Tech softball to relevant again.
This is what he had to work with at Nevada.

Pretty tough to lose an alum to the same job at a C-USA school, but I guess C-USA is a pretty good softball and baseball conference. Which the MW obviously isn't...

I'm pretty shocked as well. I had heard that he had investments so money wasn't a problem. We will never have as nice facilities as they have, Not that this makes any difference
The attitude of their fans is what we want to avoid. Never expecting to have competitive teams or facilities leads to complete apathy. Looks like their facility could be upgraded easily if success demanded.
Berkley Calapp is an assistant coach at Nevada. I wonder if she would be interested in returning to Tech as an assistant coach. A lot may depend on what the new coach at Nevada wants to do and what Taylor thinks of Tech's current assistant coaches. https://nevadawolfpack.com/sports/so...ey-calapp/1002
Yes TJC here in Tyler has an incredible athletic program in all sports. This year they were National Champions in Men’s baseball, women’s soccer and Tennis.

Okay.....I admit it. I'm suspicious. Why was Taylor available? After all, he is a former Nevada player and alumni. Hopefully he isn't coming to LA Tech with "baggage".
Quick research, he ran a clean program and his team maintained a very high team GPA. Maybe topped out what he could do at Nevada or probably there was a lack of investment for softball.
Im not sure what the turnover rate in head coach spots for softball. I imagine it isnt very high. Tech softball probably seem like a pretty attractive job. Nice facility and a good fertile recruiting territory.
Looking back, we hired Mark Montgomery from Northern Colorado with a 42-63 record. He ended up doing really well here at Tech.
I would add that we have some recent history of success too, with LA Tech winning the CUSA conference championship tournament in 2017 and 2019, as well as the regular conference title in 2019. It's one of the reason's I can't understand why our last two coaches (Bianca Duran & Maria Winn?) struggled so badly.
First how in the H-E-L-L did THAT happen? That's absurd in and of itself. 2019 wasn't that long ago. Furthermore, throw in the COVID era "extra year" eligibility offerings, and we should have been well stocked with returning players in 2021, unless you're just telling me we had nothing but seniors on the 2019 team. How does that happen?
There were five seniors on the 2019 team.
Where did everyone else go? You said 2 players were left from the 2019 team on this year's 2021 team. That's an extraordinarily low number. There should have been a lot more than that on the roster this year (2021). Remember, 2020 didn't happen in the eyes of the NCAA. So all those 2020 players should have been back this year.

Still in shock at Taylor leaving. If you were to ask me which coach is most likely to be here in 10 years I would have said Taylor. West coast guy Nevada player & coach & he goes to La Tech? If it were a P5 with a lot better facilities & money I could see it but this is a lateral move across the country with maybe slightly better facilities & money. Something doesn't jive here. One wonders if Covid killing our budget has anything to do with it?
Comparing the two stadiums, I don't think we are "slightly better". They have a 8x12 portable shed as their pressbox. They don't even have lights. I bet coach Taylor was wow'd by just seeing a panoramic pic of our facility.

I mean, thats what our old one looked like. The new one is not even, to turn a phrase, in the same ballpark.
After being a 3-year starter for Tech, Bayli Simon went to Division II UT-Tyler. I don't know why she decided to leave Tech. https://uttylerpatriots.com/sports/s...yli-simon/3378
Coach Taylor interviewed on 97.7 this morning. Man, never heard an incoming coach so excited.
