I know this a bit of a comparison between a watermelon (USC) and a lemon (LaTech), but OMG talk about something telling. Holtz is like the magician who pulls a rattlesnake out of the hat instead of a rabbit that ends up biting him in the throat. The guy just loses when it matters the most to win.

So...we are to assume USC won't be contacting Skippy? :icon_roll:

I know it is silly to predict who they will eventually hire in three or so months, but my best guess would be Luke Fickell. Everyone knows about the absolutely wonderful job he has one at Cincinnati, but what most do not know is the AD at USC was the AD at Cincinnati who hired Fickell.

If they are smart, USC will hire former Texas Head Coach Tom Herman. That guy was and is good. Herman is a much better coach than his replacement, the "drunk" former Head coach of USC, Steve Sarkisian. I still can't understand why Texas wanted Sarkisian so badly? Maybe they like losing to Arkansas? :laugh:

Fickell would be a good hire, but the word on him is, as soon as Day leave Ohio State, he would take that job no questions asked. So it could be a short term hire if Day were to leave OSU for the NFL etc, or maybe Day stays at OSU and you have Fickell for a while.

So one of Skip's former head coaching positions actually opened up before USC (but didn't merit a thread, because, well, it's just UConn).

I think they have some thinking to do about FBS football, but what would you guys think about JB3 in that job? He'd probably be nuts to take it but he's from the area, has HC experience (with an Independent team no less!).

He has went undefeated and won the national championship 2 years ago.
He will probably be fired this year.

With all of the off-field baggage, I would expect a negotiated reduced buyout so in return LSU would drop any investigations that it has authority over. Otherwise it could get very ugly as a "for cause" termination.

Herman will be back in Houston at the end of this season. Dana Holgorsen is not a head football coach. Holgorsen has proven he will not win in the Big 12. Friendship with Tillman won’t save him this time.

I agree Ohio State is probably Fickell’s dream job. He would love to get another shot to be the Buckeyes head football coach. A couple of problems.

First, I don’t think Ryan Day is going anywhere soon. I don’t think there is another college job he would leave Ohio state for.

Second, we do not know Day wants to be an NFL coach. I have seen speculation that the only NFL job he would be interested in is taking over once Bill Belichick retires.

Third, USC didn’t fire a successful coach to play it safe with the next hire. Sure, they could lose Fickell to the NFL or Ohio State in three or four years, but if in that time they win Pac 12 championships and make the play-off isn’t it worth it?

Football is not a game for the faint of heart, you must be bold in your decision making, you must take calculated risks. Schools, like us, who always plays it safe get left behind.
All of that said nobody knows who USC will ultimately pick. So I will stay with my pick of Fickell.

You are probably right. LSU should be looking to lower his buy-out. His buyout is said to be $21 million. Whatever happens it will be interesting to say the least.

After beating Louisiana Tech 38-3 in the 2020 R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl, Georgia Southern fires Chad Lunsford after a 1-3 start to the season. I guess the Georgia Southern Administration doesn't think that just winning bowl games is enough, nor will they tolerate mediocracy. I think there is a lesson there for our Administration and AD.

The guy was only 28-20.

Started 2-4 (finishing 2017).
First full year: 10-3.
Then 7-6.
Then 8-5.
Starting 1-3 this year.

Definitely not outstanding, but it feels like there must be bigger reasoning than just performance on this one.

That's right! All the best programs operate that way. If you don't have a plan for a conferene championship, no need to apply. If you aren't there by year three or four they move on to the next guy. In the meantime they crush Skip by 35 in a bowl game.

Shorthorns are 4-7 now, and they can't stop Horns Down from being flashed after games are over.

If the Horns are favored over Kansas State at home Friday morning, it is only because of the homefield advantage. If Texas manages to win, do they stoop so low as to play their high APR number in the 5-7 APR Bowl Sweepstakes?

That is admirable that he doesn't want to distract from his team. Sonny never cared about his team, so the TCU thing is obvious. I do wonder what happened about Texas TECH and whether he still wanted that job or not. Baylor fans will all be happy if Napier goes to LSU and the Aranda rumors stop. I can't imagine why Aranda would ever want to go back to LSU though, but I do know I am biased against them and for Baylor. I guess it will be interesting to see where they all land.

Aranda is being mentioned for the USC job on several of the local DFW and at least one national ESPN show. They are getting really tired of losing all the Cali kids to SEC and BIG X teams and they think he could do that.

I hate to say it, but with as much regression as there’s been in our players’ skills through Holtz coaching them down they may want to transfer out but they may not get picked up.

You know, this is really and embarrassing shame. The reasons to fire Holtz are all there, all indicators are there, There is an overriding financial reason also, the longer this goes, the worse our attendance, lose more recruits, etc.... It is costing us more money to keep Holtz than to fire him. We are past the tipping point.

The buyout for Holtz is cheap compared to what the present and long term financial losses are. For this administration to be the Academics in charge, they are really showing some low IQ, and I mean that literally, purely not smart people, intellectually inferior, plain old stupid!

And it doesn't help to have the local afternoon talk show host throw out a $6 million buyout figure without doing any research at all. The number should be $2.55M ($850K 2022-2024 salary times 3 years left). Lots more than $850K of long-term damage will be done by waiting even one more year.
