No way I can stay awake till 12
I wonder how much the red hats make.
Can Skip keep the undefeated record going against UTEP? Skip is their daddy.
Skip (ECU) is 2-0 vs UTEP
Skip (USF) is 1-0 vs UTEP
Skip (LA Tech) is 8-0 vs UTEP
UTEP is not as good as their record. Holtz will proclaim them as a mini Alabama, that’s just for smoke in case he loses the game. However, if we play our game and Holtz reads a magazine in the 4th, we win.
UTEP has played one decent opponent, Boazy, and got crushed.
I find it funny how the UTEPPERS are so full of themselves right now. One of their fans, while commenting on the strength of CUSA West, said the "bottom 4 of the division have to step it up." Well, that includes us, at the moment. Yes, CUSA West > CUSA East, and it's not even close. But, UTEP has been fortunate in their early season schedule and the meat of their slate begins this weekend.
Have always despised UTEP and their arrogant (for no reason) fans. We have way more talent, and I hope Skippy doesn't eff it up.
Some strong wins there...
W 30-3 @NM State (1-6) W 38-28 Bethune Cookman (0-6) L 13-54 @Boise (3-3) W 20-13 New Mexico (2-4) W 28-21 ODU (1-5) W 26-13 @USM (1-5)
The 5 teams the Miners have beaten have only 1 FBS wins amongst them. (And even one that was New Mexico over NMSU.)
But still -- credit to UTEP for winning the games they're supposed to win. Good on them.
It would probably mean a lot to that fan base to make a bowl game. I hope they do it (after a beat down from us).
Pretty rough stretch for the Miners coming up. I want to say they have us, then @FAU, then either UAB or UTSA (and of course they'll still need to play the other one later).
That UTEP - Rice game could really mean something this year (they also still have UNT).
I like us being up 24 going into the 4th and win by 14.
I'm going to try to be positive and hope after the bye week that Skippy will have this team fired up. AND the second half will be more than just a dismal display of what we have seen...
It's going to be cool for us (upper 50's by games end) and could be blustery with sustained winds 12 to 15 mph
I like my chances on HD having to buy me fish....
Line is moving their way. We don’t cover the spread in wins so far this year. If I were guessing, I’d say we win by less than a TD.
As a fan it's all about managing expectations. Don't expect much and you are rarely disappointed. In this case, I'd say our chances of winning in El Paso are running 45-55. That is, I give us 45% chance of winning. Not because they have a better team, they don't, but because we have a dufus for a coach who excels at losing games he shouldn't. On our side of the ledger, we have superior talent and they are, after all, frickin' loser UTEP! Our chances hinge on whether those silly UTEPPERS can lose better than Skippy can. It is very possible the game will end with the Dawgs with more points on the board than those "Minors" (spelled that way on purpose) because they are just such great losers!
On the flipside, this bunch of loser UTEPPERS may not understand their place in the universe and actually expect to win. And...simple statistical probability points to Skippy losing to UTEP some day, and this might be that day. The universe abhors a vacuum and Skippy being perfect vs. someone (11-0) represents a glitch in the space-time continuum, and the forces that-be will seek to correct this anomaly.
Let’s just assume that we are down 24-20 in the closing seconds and Skip plays for the FG. Then if we sneak up and win by 1, we are all happy.
Regarding Tech not covering the spread on wins, I'd day:
1) SLU was a much better football team than I was led to believe prior to the game. The Lions are 4-1 right now, including wins in the last 2 weeks over McNeese and Nicholls. I suspect SLU will finish their season 10-1, or 9-2.
2) Tech didn't even play our starting QB for the entire UNT game. Not sure "covering the spread" was important. But it doesn't change the fact that we won the game using a series of backup QB's.
Keeping perspective is important.
SLU's Cole Kelley has 1999 passing yards, completing at 74.55% (number 1 in FCS) and 18 Passing TDs.
I wish we could of picked him up from Arkansas. Dude is on a Bailey Zappe level.
Watched the "lowlights" of last year's anemic 21-17 win over UTEP. Blah! It is true we had huge OL troubles and that certainly hurts, but we had barely 200 yards in total offense, they had 1 turnover, we had none, and they had about 130 yards in penalties to our 30 and a HUGE call on roughing our punter which was, ahem, ticky-tack. Our defense played well; their two TDs were a long pass play and a 100-yard kickoff return. Skippy got out-coached, again, except one might say the mental errors committed by UTEP is a reflection of poor coaching.
So...it was a one-score game last year in Ruston, who's to say it won't swing their way this year?
Biggest problem is playing QB Musical Chair with Aaron Allen and Luke Anthony last year. We tried it this year against UNT (Allen/Head).
I think we will be okay against UTEP under Austin. If he continues to use his legs more like he did against NC State, he will be a very dangerous threat.
Plus we had real big issues at OL and Henderson didn't do jack at RB. It was an awful offense. Total offense against 2020 UTEP was 210. This year we are avg 412.2 per game!
I've kept up with posters' picks from previous games throughout this season (and before). All you have to do is scroll back through them to see who does/doesn't understand football. Lots of folks on here either don't understand football or are clueless about our team.
I'm not talking in code. There is a prediction thread that usually accompanies each of the games. If you want to get a feel for who has a prediction worth considering, read over the threads and then compare the predictions with the outcomes. I don't waste a second of time considering the prediction of any poster who is grossly inaccurate on a number of previous predictions.

I just thought you had a hot pick! That sentence was not intended to be important
Exactly right. A 1 point loss is no better a lose than one by 2 TDs. Another telling stat of Tech’s underachieving is how rarely Holtz’s teams ever cover the predictions in their wins. All in all, we have more losses than wins and 2 of our loses should’ve been wins, so in order to break even before the season is over, Holtz owes us 2 underdog wins. Do you think he’ll get them?
The fact that we will be an underdog to anyone left on our schedule is sad.
[QUOTE=stodgdog;1813984]Not that it's a hot pick but I think UTEP doesn't match up with us very well at all. We are a decent defense against the run, and that's what they mostly do. We struggle against complex passing offenses with a good QB who complete a variety of throws to a variety of receivers and attack with a layered approach. I think UTEP uses their passing game mostly to try to connect on big plays. Thus, the low percentage attempts would play to our advantage.
We are a very good offensive team. I think our rushing attack has been somewhat obscured because of the types of teams/games we've played thus far. A ball-control team like UTEP will struggle to bottle us up. We simply have to much variety in our skill personnel and our QB is a dog. I could see us running it to set up the pass, at least initially. Wouldn't be surprised if we break the game open in the second quarter and put them in a situation where they have to take more risks--possibly resulting in turnovers and short possessions. They might break off a couple of big plays but not enough to keep up.
I don't think the trip to El Paso will be much of a factor. They temperature might be a small factor but nothing to worry about. My guess is around 45-24 Tech with a couple of UTEP's score coming after the game is in hand. I'm not saying they're garbage but I see it as a match-up problem and a talent gap they'll not be able to overcome.
Tech 45 UTEP 24. The march to our first cusa championship has started, thanks to our transfer qb. Our conference still sucks, even though the mac might be even worse this season. Just be thankful for the transfer portal. It is our friend.
All these blow-out predictions. Amazing. We might be...and I emphasize MIGHT be...comfortably in front and looking like an easy win is coming, but then there is that Skippy factor. I don't bet on 18-22 yr olds because they are, ahem, 18-22 yr olds. But I am very tempted to take UTEP with 20 and bet some good money on it. I doubt anyone would be foolish enough to take such a bet from the other side. The Dawgs might win, and I hope we do, but by three TDs? Just don't see it.
Injury report:
RB Greg Garner is back.
DL Levi Bell is still out.
RB Harlan Dixon is out.
WR Sam Emilus is out.
DL Eric Kendzior is out.
All of those outs have a chance to be back next week.
White hat should be from the group of Jon Noli, Kevin Randall, Joe Lehring, and Tobian Johnson. Those are the four who have worked conference games this year but not this week yet.
UTSA 45 Rice 0 final
Tech wins the toss and almost elected to kick off but ended up deferring. UTEP will receive.
Joe Lehring is the white hat.
Defense couldn't get off the field in 13 plays including two 3rd and longs.
And Skippy had two weeks to gameplan THAT first play call against this defense? Pathetic first series on both sides. Throw in special teams too.
Well, that was special. UTEP drives 75 yds in 13 plays to go ahead 7-0. Dogs defense still on the Bus.
Guess what… first play from scrimmage is a handoff for nothing. I am pretty sure we could all sit down and script 80% of skips plays.
We suck
Playing up or down to your competition is the sign of a bad coach.
Teddy and Malcom are not a partnership in the booth.
I guess the Internet is out at the color commentator’s house.
Amateur hour. Kendall knows better than to hold the ball that long.
We are fixing to get blown out from the very start. Skip can add becoming Dana Dimmels B*tch to his resume.
Even special teams are flailing. Get it together guys.
Gonna be a long night, folks.
Our LT is getting worse
This is a pretty bad team on all 3 phases of the game so far.
I’m done for the night.
You guys please let me know when Rigor Mortis has fully set in for LA Tech..
Looks like Bye is going to get us a week late just like it always does.
Great tackle on the sideline to let the receiver run for big yardage.
No tackling drills in the off week.
1 & 11 got embarrassed.
Whole defense is embarrassing.
Fire Holtz...I'm gone. Good night.
We should just play every game on paper.
Surely there’s a ghost town somewhere out there where we can leave Holtz.
According to their commentator, UTEP is giving $1000 to a fan every time they score a touchdown. So far it appears Skips goal is to make their athletic department go completely broke.
I have set through some horrible losses over the years at home and on the road. Skip has given me the ability to get up off the couch and go do something else tonight. I hope they come back and win this game, but I’m done for the night gentlemen. I’m going to pour a glass of bourbon and enjoy the weather.
Rip out every rushing play from our playbook. We can't run. Can't really do anything else, either. But definitely can't run.
Skippy panics on 4th and a half-yard because he can't run the FG team out there.
4th and inches and we go shotgun. THAT SPEAKS VOLUMES!
Perfect time for the QB to line up for a sneak, but run around the end with it. Saw Jmar score from 30 yard out on that 4th and short play.
Calls time out with 24 seconds on play clock
The official gave us a terrible spot.
But at least we burned a timeout to run that stupid DIVE play.
Slammed at the line.
Garner isn't strong enough to make that play.
Holtz is such a gutless loser
Great play call. Really genius, just awesome. Folks, this is what you donate and buy tickets for, a late handoff shotgun play on 4&1
Go down 21 zip, and it’s going to be rough sledding. A score on that drive would have kept us in it.
