Pretend you’re the AD. Who do you replace Skip with?
Jeff Grimes or Jeff Lebby
So we got:
Tom Herman (Bears Analyst)
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Herman
Jeff Grimes (Baylor OC)
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_Grimes
Jeff Lebby (Ole Miss OC/QB coach)
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_Lebby
Would they have to take a pay cut to come to Ruston?
Coach O will be available next year. I’m sure he’ll get a huge severance so it’s not like he’ll need much of a salary.
Would you take him?
Herman will get a better job in the off season. Grimes would be good, took him a long time to be a coordinator, but he has in well in that job. Lebby is only 37 so he has move up faster. Has learned from the Lane Train, he owned cusa when he was here.
Lebby makes $1.2 at Ole Miss, not sure about Grimes. No way Herman makes that in his current job. All three would be worth the chance. Herman would be almost a sure winner here, but is the longest shot to take the job.
I would take any OC from any school that can run, pass, and block from the shotgun or under center on any down at just about any distance.
Joe Brady.
Knows how to run an offense. Sure it’s only 2-3 years but what a 2-3 it would be!
I think everyone would be better off shelving their wishful thinking until about 2027. Just think, but be careful you don’t puke yourselves, Holtz and his crappola football futility for 6 more underachieving years. On the bright side though, maybe by then after the Libs sell the country out there won’t be any football to worry about ;).
Tech leadership will be asking if Saban has any kids interested in coaching. If so, we’ll take one of them.
1. Kendal Briles
2. Glen Schuman
3. Graham Harrell
4. Todd Monken
5. Sonny Cumbie
[QUOTE=PawDawg;1814621]I think the heads of our leaders would explode with the mention of #1
#4 was passed on two times and word was it got ugly the second time we passed on him.[/QUOTE
#2 or #3 would be my choices. Young and motivated coaches that have been around some good programs. Both have ties to high school coaches in the DFW area. One is a defensive minded guy the other offense. Could probably bring in some good high energy assistants. Probably could utilize the transfer portal well too.
Why would Briles raise an eyebrow? Was he helping to hide the scandal?
All of these guys are place holders for other programs bigger than TECH...not going to happen. Some of you need to get a grip and start looking at freshman up and comers where Tech will be their first HC job and will be with the program for 2 maybe 3 years...if they are successful, move on. Or we can settle with the status quo and stay with Skippy. BUT, I don't see the current Admin making any changes and I'm not sure why! With that said, we will continue to be miserable on Saturday or Thursday/Friday night (as ESPN dictates) and throw our money at this program.
Eddie Gran is another offensive mind that I think would be a good fit. He’s has a job at Kentucky as a “special assistant”, whatever that is. He was relieved of OC duties last year, but brought back in that capacity. I like the style offense Kentucky runs. It allows them to take lesser talent and win against teams they shouldn’t be winning against. I have no idea why he was relieved as OC because their offense has been very good.
Somebody we could afford and is on no ones radar, Garrett Riley OC at SMU. Give it to a younger guy, let him try and prove himself and be innovative. Maybe bring Colby Cameron along with him.
If I have to watch Skip’s product and see us fail, I wouldn’t mind seeing a younger guy swing for the fences and if he failed at least it’s more likely we went down punching. With skip it’s to the point we are just in the fetal position on the floor
All of these candidates are impossible. None of them have famous coaching fathers. Start the thread over with a real list of candidates.
Terry Bowden's getting some wins over at Duck Poop U.
Just sayin ...
We have to get rid of Holtz. This is a pivotal moment in Tech football, and one more year of this kind of crap will do irreversible damage to this program. All of the talk about Holtz stabilizing the program is now off the table, as last year was a train wreck, and this year looks to be even worse. That’s not stabilization, that’s implosion. As bad as Holtz is right now, there’s a bigger lesson to learn from all of this. Bad coaches come and go, but an incompetent AD that signs these contracts can have a lasting negative impact long after they’re gone.

Nobody wants Rattay?
I guess, if I were picking, I'd want someone who will hire hot shot coordinators and let them do their jobs.
Any chance Manny Diaz gets fired?
Blake Baker is about to be available too.
Rich Rod...
Exactly. Kendall Briles has been an OC at Baylor, FAU, Houston, Florida St and now Arkansas. If LA Tech has "problems" hiring Briles, I'm going to officially side with ULL fans and start calling LA Tech "too arrogant" for its' own good.

That's a type of famous.

Kendal Briles it is.
Nick Rolovich
Replace him with no one.
We're about to be left in a six member nobody limbo below the Sun Belt.
The flip side of this coin that no one is really thinking about is when you consider the tar pit that Tech is in who of anyone of any caliber would want to come here and be swallowed up by it.
It's a patrons only episode, but just this week a national college football podcast I like tweeted this:
Quote:
New wide-ranging Q&A show for Patreon subscribers, where @38Godfrey
spends roughly as much time talking about why La. Tech is a good job as he spends on the LSU search. (LSU bonus show is also now in your feeds)
I don’t necessarily agree with going back to annual games with the @twins. However, if we end up in a totally depleted or defunct conference, then punching down won’t hurt any more than being a nobody in the college football hierarchy.
Well, the conference is depleted, may soon be defunct. We joined CUSA and thought we had taken a step forward. Guess we are now taking our two steps back….
An average coach can win at La Tech, hell Skip has proven that. I would like to see what a good or great coach could accomplish. We probably will never know because our hiring processes are garbage.
You’d think someone could put it all together and get it done right. It’s not like Tech is trying to be the first to invent the wheel or anything like that, it’s just hiring a coach and managing a program that succeeds in winning, being at least an occasional conference champion and getting nationally ranked every few years.
I’ve been thinking about this a lot since 4AM. I think we need to go out and get Tim Rattay. Reasons why….
#1 He’s currently making $315,000 at OK State, so we should be able to hire him with the budget we will have.
#2 Whoever we hire couldn’t possibly be worse than what we have now.
#3 He’s a Tech legend, and that alone would spark some excitement again in Ruston that is DESPERATELY needed.
#4 He’s a winner, and he can bring back the type of offense that Louisiana Tech is known for.
#5 He’s been in the coaching ranks now for 10 years, so he has a list of contacts that he can hire for assistants.
In my opinion, this is a no lose hire for Tech, and I think Tim would jump on it. We have to get rid of Holtz this year before it’s too late to save what’s left of this program.
Southeastern Louisiana has now quietly moved to 6-1 on the season, after last night's 51-14 spanking of NSU.
I told ya'll that was a good football team. Ross Jenkins is the Special Team's Coordinator there. Maybe Rattay could hire Jenkins to revamp our special teams, and Rich Rod from ULM to be our new OC?
Rattay also is a son of a Coach IIRC, wasn't his dad a well respected coach at a high school?
I watched some of the game before I had to leave for Ruston. When I left NSU trailed just 14-7 with 1:30 to go to halftime. Heard on the radio SLU went 96 yards in 40 seconds to make it 21-7 at the half. NSU was rushing 3 and dropping 8 into coverage and SLU was slow to adapt to that scheme. Saw Kelly force about 5 throws down field into coverage and was nearly picked each time. But, then SLU got smart and started running the ball...8-10 yards at a pop, and throwing short for nice gainers. That forced NSU to bring up more defenders closer to the LOS and then Bam! SLU was able to employ their regular offense and things snowballed from there.
SLU's OL is huge!
BTW, if we were to play SLU now, we'd get whipped! Well-coached teams get better as the season goes on. That ain't happening in Ruston right now.
Haha. Rattay takes a way bigger step down, but it is a bigger promotion.
FYI Rattay's coach, just this week, signed a lifetime contract. That means as long as Rattay doesn't eff it up he has a lifetime contract. He has to be loving that idea. Imagine stability for a journeyman position coach. Just don't think about WFT and all should be well.
I agree wholeheartedly. To add to the reasons why:
- It would be a no brainer for the money people.
- He’s one of us.
- Other than TB12 himself, no one is the quintessential Air Raid QB like Tim was.
Action: everyone on this board needs to (please) email and call Monday morning Guice and AD Wood. (So what if you’ve done this many times, please do it again) I will go further and send The Rattay Sollution to a big donor who knows all of them. Please do the same.
I can testify that just a few people speaking up with a common truthful message gets results. Example: Back in July 2020, in Walton County , Florida only 10 of us spoke before our county commissioners and convinced them NOT to enact a mask mandate (disregard your stance on this issue to see the point). We went up against an organized, vocal group. The commissioners voted 0-5 to enact the mandate.
‘POINT: organized, logical argument from a surprisingly small group can get results.
Can anyone post email addresses for Guice and AD Wood?
Our program is in the 4th quarter. We always want pressure in the 4th. Time for a Zero Blitz.
Tim would jump at the chance if offered. We can get the athletes to make that offense run, Dykes and Franklin proved that, we just need someone who will #1 actually do it and #2 be able to recognize, recruit and teach a QB how to run it. Tim fits both criteria. We won’t hire him because our leadership at Tech is neutered and gutless, but that’s what we should do.
I've been under the impression the money people who love Holtz blame Rattay for underperforming and were part of why Rattay was ran off. So, unless they've changed, don't see Rattay coming back.
Matt Dunigan for coach...
Do doubt Holtz backstabbed Rattay as a way to get him out of the picture. If you remember, Holtz wouldn’t allow Tim to challenge J’Mar. I’d bet anything that Rattay would’ve either exposed J’Mar as the slacker he was or we would’ve gotten him to play better. Either way Holtz would’ve looked less the football brains he was trying to pass himself off as. That’s the overall governing reason why Holtz won’t let any of his assistants coach their own, he doesn’t want to be shown up.
We need Tim back in some capacity and I’ve always been a big advocate of bringing Dunigan back too. Together, I bet they’d be great.
Well, he’s gone now, and Holtz has digressed, so that argument doesn’t hold water. Plus he’s doing a pretty good job where he currently is. Hopefully none of the people that hold that belief have Tech degrees.
C-USA may fold as a football conference. Who would you add to replace the 6 who left? I think we end up in the WEST division of the sun belt football members with, LA Tech, Southern Miss, Texas State, Arkansas State, ULL, ULM and South Alabama. and in the EAST division FIU, Marshall, GA Southern, GA State, APP State, Coastal Carolina,Troy. That may put Western KY and Middle Tenn in the MAC. UTEP out west somewhere. Old Dominion up east somewhere.
Texas Tech just fired their head coach.
We're not going to the Sun Belt. Sun Belt fans will talk about Tech's rocky relationship with the Sun Belt but most importantly Tech also wouldn't fit into the eastern division's goal. Adding USM adds a new state to the belt and gets Troy back in the west with USA. The eastern teams wouldn't want a third Louisiana team and they want to add teams in the eastern time zone, namely old rivals in Marshall and then ODU and JMU. Adding Tech would put one or both Alabama teams in the east, which the eastern members don't want. Tech wouldn't get the votes because of the eastern time zone teams.
I don't see the MAC taking WKU or MTSU. I think the MAC has figured out its formula and doesn't care to change it just to save the two programs.
This is correct.
Both the Louisiana teams plus Arkansas state are for Tech being in the Sunbelt. Regardless of what the trolls say, they know it would be a win for them.
Not so much in the East.
The real conference realignment should happen with C-USA and Sunbelt exchanging members for Geography and then agree to mutual scheduling agreements.
Exactly.
And why I am convinced that our weird Frankenstein TV deal was what ultimately did the C-USA in.
Piecemealing it out to cbs, stadium, ESPN is like selecting Pepsi as your Coke provider at home. It seems like you get a little more money, but in the end it’s nasty Pepsi.
Bump!
Talk about a rebuilding project.
We need someone with a strong personality also (like a Dooley) who can override the go-along-to-get-along culture in Ruston to do what it takes to win and win big. That's going to be pretty hard to do with the mess Dr. Guice has gotten us into but its not impossible.
Hopefully whoever it is will require Tech to pay market COA/Stipend.
I agree we have to have it. I wonder what we shuffle to the bottom of the pile to afford it. Not being argumentative, it’s a legitimate issue in my mind.
I’m actually optimistic about Wood hiring someone. I think you need someone from outside the Ruston bubble to make this hire.
You need a strong personality. Someone who will push things like CoA, Stipend, Student Athletic Fee. Someone with bigger ideas.
For a HC, I would prefer someone who is willing to let his assistants coach and finds good assistants.
Or do you go with a personality like Rich Rod? He’s certainly a firebrand, and capable.
With as little confidence as I Have in the administration at this point, I would bet they have most of their ducks in a row. I would bet that COA and Stipend are in the conversation and that our hire will be name-worthy. That is expecting a lot I know, but the hiring pool is going to be exceptionally big this year it looks like, plus coaches with current gigs who they may be looking at. TECH will be ELITE with the hire, I think they want to make a big splash!
Yeah, I know, that doesn't even sound right, but remember, this administration hardly ever tells us anything. I don't think there is anything in between, they are either totally prepared or they are just shooting from the hip. I can't ever remember them shooting from the hip.
