We got him.

Just in time. There is now hope for the future, IF Tech won’t promote Holtz’s son to head coach or make some other crony move like that.

Now now.
There will be plenty of time to blast the bad hire when it happens. For now, let's enjoy the moment.

Y'all happy now? There's a very good chance this backfires tremendously

Re: LA Tech, Holtz Announce Coaching Change Following Rice Game - latechsports.com
There’s always risk in making change and the status quo feels safe. I think the status quo would have crippled our athletic dept. A change was the right risk to take. Good job Dr. Wood!

Re: LA Tech, Holtz Announce Coaching Change Following Rice Game - latechsports.com
Wish him well, but this needed to happen. Hope we find a great young coach that somebody is wanting to get to be their coach soon!

Yep. Happy. Backfire you say......how can an already backfiring, dying engine backfire any more than it already is? Skip is a great guy, but the game has passed him by. I wish him the very best.

Chance of a backfire decreases from almost 100% certainty to something significantly less than that.

How? We don’t win championships with the new guy? Or we go 6-6 every year and go to the same bowls as if we were 8-4 or 9-3?

The average [Louisiana Tech administrator] does not want to be free, he merely wants to be safe.

So, a mutual parting….what are the implications financially?

With it being mutual, my guess is we don’t really have to pay him anything, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they gave him some kind of parting gift.

Hopefully something less than $2.55M. Give him $1.5M and let him go find another job if he can.

Holtz should have outright resigned since he had obviously quit. He shouldn’t ask for another than an apple and a roadmap

Would take a blizzard in July before that was ever going to happen.

IDK, he was a defeated man in his last several appearances/interviews with zero upside to speak of. No fight in him at all.

Carlisle said he looked rejuvenated at Tueday's press conference. Probably relieved knowing this was in the works.
-
Re: LA Tech, Holtz Announce Coaching Change Following Rice Game - latechsports.com
Hopefully, it’s a $300-400,000 buyout per year for 3-4 years so we don’t have to empty piggy bank.

Not the way it works. Hoping it's under $1.5M, but likely all due soon.

Have there been situations when former schools are still paying for years after a coach leaves if gets fired?

We won’t know, it won’t happen. But every assumption is as good as yours, because all it would be is an assumption without seeing it play out.
We had some good times. I wish him the best. I hope we can make a good hire.
-
Re: LA Tech, Holtz Announce Coaching Change Following Rice Game - latechsports.com
I have been wanting this to happen for several years now, and I am glad this has finally transpired, BUT...
I want to wish HCSH and his family the best, he has had some good moments here and has made some good things happen. He is in a business where HC jobs have expiration dates and it is very rare that a coach gets to stay at a HC job for a really extended amount of time. I really think he knew it was time to move on and I wish him a happy landing.

If you weigh all the options, I have no idea how someone could be worried about this backfiring on us versus what we were 99% sure was gonna happen.

Re: LA Tech, Holtz Announce Coaching Change Following Rice Game - latechsports.com
I've followed Louisiana Tech for 50 years...and while it has been a very rough two years for Tech athletics, we've survived worse. We've always bounced back before, and I believe this to be the first step toward our future. I wish Skip and his family the best.
-
Re: LA Tech, Holtz Announce Coaching Change Following Rice Game - latechsports.com
We'll never know what would have happened moving forward. In year one I doubt most of us (myself included) would have expected the bowl streak or 9 and 10 win seasons.
It's always really risky to change coaches. Always.
But as conservative as I am on this kind of thing, the ODU loss was the turning point in my mind towards "maybe it's time." The USM loss with no QB solidified it.
I wish him well in his next gig. I do think he has some valuable coaching skills that some other program could benefit from. He might be a hard sell for an AD at the moment because of the way things are ending at Tech, but a program looking for stability could do worse.
I just really didn't think it would happen.
It's going to be an interesting year to be looking. On one hand there are a ton of openings (with more coming). On the other, maybe we get a recently fired guy like a Mullen or Paterson for a couple of years that we'd otherwise not been able to afford while previous school pays them. Not sure we'd want either of those two specifically, but same principle.
-
Re: LA Tech, Holtz Announce Coaching Change Following Rice Game - latechsports.com
His next gig will not be anything to do with coaching football.

This is the dirty side of the business, but I'm not sure this could have been handled any better than it appears to be going down.
I appreciate what Holtz brought to Ruston, and we will all be able to remember the good times much more fondly with it going down this way now than waiting until later to get it done.

I think that statement was right on, he has simply burned out at this stop, and that is a head coaches life, multiple stops and moves. I think he is better suited to finding a rock bottom program and rejuvenating it.

Maybe we can keep him on in a diminished capacity....like OC or QB coach.
Running for cover now!
That said, I wish him well. He seems like a good fellow. I feel for anyone that loses a job they love, but I'd feel worse if it was the guy that cleans the stadium after the games because he'd be in much worse shape financially. Skip has been well paid and will be fine.

Re: LA Tech, Holtz Announce Coaching Change Following Rice Game - latechsports.com
Good luck to Skip! I have nothing against him - he just wasn't right for us and we need someone that will shake things up and win again.

I agree, No we are not at the bottom, Ellis Johnson-USM is the bottom, we will recover.
I think it is the right thing to do, wishing him well, I would rather take the high road.
-
Re: LA Tech, Holtz Announce Coaching Change Following Rice Game - latechsports.com
Coaches don’t get fired for “ not doing well “ at Tech. Maybe you missed our conference implosion a few weeks ago along with the losses piled up by our HC over the last two years. I’ve seen the bottom two other times over the past 40 years in football. We are currently there for the third time. That’s an honest observation, not an opinion or whining.
-
Re: LA Tech, Holtz Announce Coaching Change Following Rice Game - latechsports.com
Ok so, thank you Holtz for the good wins however many there were. Enough said about that now let’s move on to what had better be a great hire to get this program where we all want to be. Being the nice guy loser that everybody wants to schedule for homecoming sucks. I’d much rather be the bad ass winner that everybody respects and wants to play in hopes that it’ll elevate their program.

If this hire goes wrong, I think some fans are truly gonna learn what the bottom actually is for a program. Skip had this program very far from it...

You’ve made it very clear from your various posts regarding Holtz that you dwell mostly in the past focusing almost exclusively on the high water marks. The problem is that what you’re see it way back in the rear view. Trends begin in the present and extend into the future. Right now, under Holtz’s the present isn’t good and the future looks bleak. A change was 100% necessary.

Have you watched this team lose? That's bottom. This is his NINTH year as HC and he led us there. No OLine, no QB, no special teams, and a defense weak as a pup that can't tackle hot mush.

-
Re: LA Tech, Holtz Announce Coaching Change Following Rice Game - latechsports.com
Letting a coach go is always a risk, I suppose. But what I saw for next season was double-digit losses. No home games with anywhere close to 10,000 fans. The risk in this case is minimal.
In year 9 we did not have a capable offensive line for the second year in a row. Our gamble at QB did not pay off, no doubt not having a capable offensive line contributed to that problem. Special teams have been questionable for a while.
Sure Skip is a nice guy. Overall probably ran a pretty clean program. Every coach is going to have a player get in trouble at some point or have players flunk out. Only a idiot wouldn't understand that. But treating others with respect (being a nice guy) and running pretty much a clean program is not a reason to keep a coach, those should be the minimum expectations for any coach anywhere. Not doing those things should get you fired with no buyout.
This is an exciting time. The opportunities for the future are limitless. You couldn't say that this morning.

I have not looked at the contract to try to figure out if this is accurate, but here is what this guy says................
Louisiana Tech announces that football head coach Skip Holtz will be departing. Per the terms of his contract, he will be owed a buyout of just over $3 million that is expressly not subject to a duty to mitigate and will not be offset by future job income

After this season it would have been $2.55M ($850K for 3 years). Since it was announced before the last game, there must be an extra amount for this year.

Counsel is supposed to guide idiots. Unless the idiots allowed the other party to write the entire contract. Some of the provisions we have found out about have no place in a contract for any Tech coach.

I don’t see McClelland being the idiot so much as he was the guy setting up his buddy with a golden parachute deal. The biggest idiot is Guice for agreeing to what Holtz had set up. But that’s come to be the norm for bureaucrats and institutionalists. They’re always the worst when it comes to spending other people’s money. Guice is just another stupid decision maker with no business sense.

Our boycott worked. "Just come to the games" is fine but would have us looking at who knows how many more years of Holtz
For 3M dollars to not coach at Tech, i don't feel a shred of remorse

McClelland’s job was to pursue the best interests of his employer. He obviously didn’t do that if those terms are correct.
-
Re: LA Tech, Holtz Announce Coaching Change Following Rice Game - latechsports.com
These are the terms laid out in the 2017 contract. I would imagine the current one is written exactly the same except for the salary amounts since the auto-extension was built into this one.
13.0
Termination Without Cause
13.1
If the UNIVERSITY terminates this CONTRACT without cause, as liquidated
damages, the FOUNDATION shall pay COACH his total annual compensation (see Paragraphs
3.1 and 3.2) remaining on this CONTRACT that would have been earned but for UNIVERSITY'S
termination without cause. These amounts shall be payable by the FOUNDATION solely through
its athletic funds. The amount due for the calendar year in which termination without cause occurs
shall be payable within thirty (30) days of termination without cause. The remaining balance shall
be payable in equal installments, with the first installment due on July 15 following termination
without cause and all subsequent installments payable by July 15 of each successive year until paid
in full. FOUNDATION may accelerate payments to COACH without penalty. However, in no
event will such payments be subject to any offset and/or mitigation.

I can’t believe they actually did it. My guess is some of their NEZ fundraising meetings didn’t go as planned.

Re: LA Tech, Holtz Announce Coaching Change Following Rice Game - latechsports.com
15“I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. 16 So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth. (Rev 3:15-16).
What’s worse than bad, is mediocre/lukewarm. Holtz was the king of mediocrity. Mediocrity allows you to settle in, keeping you from moving forward. Holtz brought us winning seasons, good players, bowl wins, but he was unable to win a conference championship. I lost all confidence in Holtz when I witnessed us get beat down in 2015 by So. Miss 58-24. Tech administration had to make this decision.

Re: LA Tech, Holtz Announce Coaching Change Following Rice Game - latechsports.com
The amounts owed are for years from July 1 to June 30. The current year base plus supplemental salary is $775K through June 30, 2022, and $850K for each year through June 30, 2025.
So the reported slightly over $3M amount is correct with $2.55M for future years plus $452,083.33 for the rest of this fiscal year (December through June). That is $3,002.083.33 total. Contract details are here.

I’ve been out of the loop for a little bit, but I’m sure some of you could use a punching bag: what is this board’s obsession with Tim Rattay being a head coach besides being a great Tech QB?

We are not at the bottom.
Also, as for the "bottom" you can add UAB to the list and look where they are now! A program that was CANCELLED and now consistantly winning...

Nothing, but that is enough for many.

Like not making a reasonable effort to recruit HS players as evidenced by bringing in 19 transfers, which is not in the long term best interest of the university and not having his team prepared to play. Any little thing to make him defend his right to full payment.

Holtz will get the full payment. The belief that most fans have that La Tech can’t afford the buyout it is laughable. For an engineering school we have a lot of alumni that aren’t good at math.

Would love to see us save that $3M, But.....
We are searching for a new head coach at the moment and Louisiana TECH nit-picking over $3M right now probably does not present the best picture to future coaching hires. Yeah I said nit-picking over $3M, that is huge amount to us, but chump change in the FBS coaching world. Again, I would love to not have to pay that out, just do not think it is wise in the big picture.

It’s not about being able to afford it. It’s about making Holtz uncomfortable and challenging his right to a full pay out. Hell, he didn’t even earn his salary this year.

Do you think Holtz lived up to the terms of his contract over the last 18 months?

The fact that you are arguing Holtz buyout tells me how Busch league Tech fans are…and we wonder why we don’t have more success.

He didn't live up to them from the beginning, remember the kind of offense he was supposed to run?
I just think any possible hires will think that is rather petty of us to try and not pay the money. I do hope that we learned from those mistakes and tailor future contracts to be more of a two way street though. It is another bought lesson, learn from it and move on.

Because we expect our coaches to do their jobs? That’s bush league? It actually reflects on our ADs and Presidents making the bad hires. Fans expect and deserve wins.

Give the man a pat on the back, pay him and turn the page. I don’t want anything lingering to distract from the future. On the surface this is a fresh start so let’s truly make it that.

I think a prospective HC will be more concerned why we low ball COA/stipend money for athletes.

Well one could argue Holtz has been one of the most successful coaches at Tech. I think it’s time for him to go…but Tech needs to honor the contracts they have signed.

So by your logic, I assume you think firing a coach with a winning record and 7 bowl appearances is bush league.

No firing a coach with a winning record and 7 bowl appearances without paying the buyout as some posters suggest is Busch league.

Success is relevant to expectations. You could say he over achieved based on what we were accustomed to but the bar was MUCH lower under Holtz than it was under his predecessors. Therefore he underachieved based on the weak ass competition he faced. He was weak and cost our program dearly.

Tech needs to move forward… I agree. Holtz provided some stability and was what many fans were asking for when he was hired. A coach that could win and was willing to stay around. Holtz can’t be blamed for the weak ass conference affiliation. I agree we should have won the weak ass conference r championship at least once during his tenure.

Is it bush league to pay out money you’re not contractually required to pay?

What does the contract say? I’ve heard rumors of bonuses for 8+ wins.
