Important first conference road test! We can't sleep on them. I didn't follow the game, but it looked like it was fairly tight against UAB.

Re: Preview: LA Tech at UTEP
Fourth straight game vs. the Miners in El Paso. This is like Marshall and ODU where we always seem to play road games vs. them.

Not really. UAB led 42-28 at halftime, and had a 20+ pt lead over UTEP for most of the 2nd half, including a 75-53 lead with only 1:12 left in the game. I asked UAB fans on the CUSA board how UTEP managed to score the last 9 pts of the game for the final 75-62 margin, and they said it was one of those situations where the UAB coach (Kennedy) emptied his bench for the last 1:12.
https://www.espn.com/mens-college-ba...meId/401372827
But your point is still well taken. This Tech team can't sleep on anybody.

.....even though ODU beat us in Baseball to win the CUSA Championship in our brand new stadium just last season. (Yes, I'm still bitter. ) And Marshall seems to whip us in football, no matter where we play. (They beat us in JAS in 2020)

Re: Preview: LA Tech at UTEP
Honestly, we're a crazy finish away from being 1-1 in conference with lots of concern as to whether or not we can win at UTEP. I think we'll probably win, but I wouldn't bet on it. We have to get more consistent from beyond the arc. Right now, we have one of the worst 3pt shooting % in the conference.
-
Re: Preview: LA Tech at UTEP
Can't be down double-digits deep into the second half and expect to make another comeback.
-
Re: Preview: LA Tech at UTEP

Re: Preview: LA Tech at UTEP
If you were trying to introduce someone to basketball, you burn the tape of that first five minutes. UGLY!
Even the zebras are lost. Shot clearly hit the rim and no shot clock reset. Refs corrected it, so at least one of them was awake.
-
Re: Preview: LA Tech at UTEP
This might be the ugliest game I've ever seen.

Re: Preview: LA Tech at UTEP

Re: Preview: LA Tech at UTEP
Allowing UTEP to set up a lounge chair to shoot outside the arc. No illegal screens needed.
-
Re: Preview: LA Tech at UTEP
Too much dribbling by Tech in this game. The Dawgs need to work on passing the ball in practice WITHOUT dribbling at all. This is crazy. This much dribbling leads to too many turnovers.
-
Re: Preview: LA Tech at UTEP
Bradford looking good. 3 for 3 on FG's.
-
Re: Preview: LA Tech at UTEP
Tech 22 Bieniemy 10 at the 8:00 media timeout called by UTEP.
-
Re: Preview: LA Tech at UTEP
Opened up a nice lead. Need to keep it up.
-
Re: Preview: LA Tech at UTEP
Lofton needs to quit trying to "handle" the ball so much outside. He's not a guard, and nobody thinks he plays like one.
-
Re: Preview: LA Tech at UTEP
Looks like they gave the game basketball an extra oiling before the game tonight. Either that or they popped one straight out of the box without breaking it in first.
-

I agree, if he is so dominant underneath, let’s see it.

He doesn't need to be dribbling, but I don't mind him outside the arc when they run the backdoor play.

I agree with that, there may be times that him being at the top of the key will open up the lane for a cutter like that 1 play. He is a good passer. He doesn’t need to put the ball on the floor.
-
Re: Preview: LA Tech at UTEP
The announcers need to just shut up about Kenneth Lofton. He's having a horrible game so far, and they just keep going on and on about him.

Junior has made the best pass of the night so far. Too bad the passes to him have not been that good.
-
Re: Preview: LA Tech at UTEP
Someone who knows more than me should explain why the restricted arc is a good thing. Can a player not be out of control inside that? Not by rule, I mean, but in reality.

He's also thrown a couple away too.

Re: Preview: LA Tech at UTEP
Way to loose with the ball. We should be up at least 6 or 8 more.
-
Re: Preview: LA Tech at UTEP
So, since Bienemy has scored 20 of UTEP's 25 points, why in the hell do we keep leaving him wide open to shoot 3's???

Re: Preview: LA Tech at UTEP
Tech leads 41-25 at Halftime.

Re: Preview: LA Tech at UTEP
At Halftime:
9 players have scored for LA Tech.
3 players have scored for UTEP.

Best thing about it is that it eliminates any doubt on a block-charge call when the defensive player has a foot on the arc line like Cobe did. I like that it eliminates cheap charge calls from being drawn by a defensive player standing under the basket. But I think the top of the arc is drawn 3-6 inches too far out from the basket.

Re: Preview: LA Tech at UTEP
Lofton seems to be lost tonight. He really hasn't been able to do anything right. It's been a bad game for him so far, from the tip off to now.
Tech leads 45-27, with 15:57 left in the game.
-
Re: Preview: LA Tech at UTEP
WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH LOFTON?? He just handed the UTEP player the ball for ANOTHER Tech turnover.
Timeout. Dawgs lead 48-32 with 11:41 remaining in the game.
-
Re: Preview: LA Tech at UTEP
Never felt so uneasy about a game where Tech is seemingly in control. Tech offense has been so sporadic that a UTEP run could still make a game of this.
-
Re: Preview: LA Tech at UTEP
Timeout. Tech leads 53-36, with 7:36 remaining.

I agree. There just hasn't been much rhythm to this game. Very sloppy, with far too much offensive dribbling by Tech.
-
Re: Preview: LA Tech at UTEP
Hunter and Cobe have both played well again.
-
Re: Preview: LA Tech at UTEP
Konkol should run a full court press for the next 5 minutes, just to get everybody loose again.
-
Re: Preview: LA Tech at UTEP
And here is the run after Tech took several bad shots and missed open shots.
-
Re: Preview: LA Tech at UTEP
We are not going to win this game.
-
Re: Preview: LA Tech at UTEP
That was Lofton's man that got that slam dunk! LOfton needs to wake the hell up, or hit the bench and let somebody else do it.
-
Re: Preview: LA Tech at UTEP
Lofton gets his own slam dunk BLOCKED at the 4:40 mark.
-
Re: Preview: LA Tech at UTEP
Still want to see Hunter and Lofton on the floor together.
-
Re: Preview: LA Tech at UTEP
Our perimeter defense has to get better these last 4 minutes.
-
Re: Preview: LA Tech at UTEP
Nice interception by Lofton on defense. Williams takes it to the house for 2, and one.
Timeout. Tech leads 59-46, with 3:25 remaining.
-
Re: Preview: LA Tech at UTEP
Dawgs win, 64-52, on CBS Sports, or 64-51 if you are reading ESPN.

Ugliest win I've seen from Tech in a long, long time. But, I'll take it.
-
Re: Preview: LA Tech at UTEP
It's a win in El Paso. No injuries. We got some good production from our bench players. Got to keep those legs fresh. Still a lot of basketball ahead of us.
-
Re: Preview: LA Tech at UTEP
jamal "the enemy" nearly took us single-handed, but cobe did a great job of shutting down boum.
we've got to get better at making a clean pass into the paint when teams are playing aggressive on the perimeter. that may be the first time this season a team has done that to us, as they are typically focused on stopping junior. every time a defense plays us like that it should result in a lofton dunk.

Re: Preview: LA Tech at UTEP
Williams and Archibald were combined 9 for 9 from the FT line. That's how ya do it! Since they have the ball in their hands so much they will get fouled and they have to deliver points from the line. Well done.
Lofton needs to let the game come to him. Looks like he is pressing, trying too hard. Just relax and play your game. The points will come.
WTG Dawgs! Conference road wins are huge.

Seemed that all of our guys had difficulties catching and handling the ball. It was like the ball was slippery. That's not a good problem when the other team is pressuring the ball on the perimeter and overplaying everything. We needed more backdoor cuts and passes to the goal (besides Junior) to back them off. Because our guards were able to beat them one-on-one along with our transition offense and their inability to hit open shots (besides the one guy), we got up on them big. A road win is a big win, but they made us look ugly.

Game ball texture?
UTEP plays with Nike Elite basketballs, we typically use Wilson NCAA balls.

I noticed early on that Cobe had difficulty handling it and Junior couldn't catch it cleanly. We had multiple unforced turnovers where we just lost the ball. Then Junior had difficulty gripping it all night, couldn't catch it or rebound it cleanly and had a couple slip out as he was shooting. Something was up for sure.
-
Re: Preview: LA Tech at UTEP
Let's see if our ball handling gets better at UTSA, they use adidas balls.
At home we use Wilson NCAA Solution (official game ball of NCAA and NIT tournament).
-
Re: Preview: LA Tech at UTEP
Any win at UTEP is a good win -
They make you play ugly and typical force 4 to 5 turnovers more per game than you usually avg
Also have to remember they are playing at altitude at 3,800 ft
I thought we played well - even though Jr struggled with the ball and scoring he still had 18? rebounds
Cobe is the straw that stirs this drink, once he settled down he took over and stretched the lead
Archibald probably played his worse game of the year - he was a turnover machine and played poor defense
Stewart may have played his best game and had several big threes
Kenny Hunter continues to grow and contribute valuable minutes
If Crawford was healthy we could put him a Jr in the game at the same time - without Crawford we have to have Hunter to spell Jr cause Thomas just doesn't appear to have the game to contribute valuable minutes at this level
-
Re: Preview: LA Tech at UTEP
Yep...Jr. had 11 points and 18 rebounds and we call that a down game for him?!

But if we spend a billion dollars on facilities the SEC will be breaking down our door!

Archibald missed one. Stat line missed it. First one be shot then he was on after that.

Yes, more than once, the announcers curse hit a player on the floor. He bragged on Arch being “automatic”. Then he missed the first one.

Re: Preview: LA Tech at UTEP
I think Junior got shorted on the rebound count. He had to have had 20+ rebounds.

Box score shows Arch 3 for 3 at the line. But he missed one? Well then all bets are off, yank his ship!

UTEP had their troubles handling the ball too. Must have been a brand new one, and a game should never be played using a ball that hasn't had a least a couples of practices of wear on it.

These are the basketballs we have used. For our home games, we use the official ball used for NCAA & NIT tournaments (Wilson NCAA Evo NXT). Interesting that being an adidas school, we don't use their basketball and bats/gloves for baseball.

For almost 30 minutes after the game, ESPN showed UTEP with 51 points and CBS Sports showed them with 52. Also, when Tech scored their first point of the game --a free throw-- the scorekeepers assigned the point to UTEP instead of Tech. It finally got corrected after a commercial break.
That stat crew made mistakes all night long, and made the easy one's look hard.

Despite those 18 rebounds, Junior did not have a good game:
- he had 4 turnovers by himself.....and I really think it was more than that
- he missed a slam dunk layup (How do you do that at 6'7"?)
- he scored 11 points in 28 minutes of play. That's not great for a star player
- he was 1 of 3 (33.33%) from the free throw line
- Normally a great passer, Junior only had 1 assist in this game
Fourteen of Junior's 18 rebounds were Defensive, and Junior got'em because UTEP missed so many shots at the start of the game. All Junior had to do was stand under the basket and pick up the misses. The position he plays puts him in the best position to capitalize on those misses.
By Junior's standards, this was a below average performance. But the truth is, if Jamal Bienemy doesn't shoot way over his average (28 points last night vs 13.8 average), Tech would have easily won by 30 pts.
-
Re: Preview: LA Tech at UTEP
Junior had an off night vs. UTEP but truthfully he is struggling this year by his standards. It is referred to as the "sophomore jinx." I think he is just pressing too hard and just needs to relax and allow the game to come to him. Easier said than done for competitors like Junior. He wants to help Tech win and he knows how good he is, so he is pushing, trying to do too much. He has a strong supporting cast, especially our trio of guards: Williams, Archibald, and Willis (WAW)! Hunter is coming along, and I'd like to see spells of both Lofton and Hunter on the floor at the same time. Those two combined with WAW may prove to be our Best Five come crunch time, like in the conference tourney.
