He has to pay for those Robert Trent Jones fees some how!

Can't wait to watch that first delayed handoff play.

Well somebody had to or will have to write that check.
From his contract.
13.0 Termination Without Cause
However, in no event will such payments be subject to any offset and/or mitigation. (last sentence in section 13.1.)
That Tommy sure was a shrewd negotiator.

I knew the answer and had read the contract.
Just thought it was worth repeating for all you guys dying to give Holtz money even though he did not fulfill the terms of his contract.

Re: Betcha Didn't See That Coming
This is a great move for Holtz. He'll be in downtown Birmingham where he can get football coaching lessons from Bill Clark at UAB.

I was never impressed by Clark.
I mean, he DID blow a 17 point lead to us in 2020.

Impressed or not he has won 2 conference titles and lost another one to the Lane Train. Plus he has won 2/3 of his games throughout his career and has never had a losing season. He could obviously teach Skippy a thing or two, if Skippy is capable of learning.
-
Re: Betcha Didn't See That Coming
Rumor is that they main reason they hired Skip was to save by not hiring an OLine coach, special teams coach, or OC/QB coach. Saved money on 4 extra salaries.

Not to mention re-built a program that was dismantled. He impresses me.

He was given the early version of the transfer portal and was able to play 25 year old guys against the normal ages.
Also, you can factor in our idiot commissioner's allowance for consistent rule breaking.

I agree that he got some NCAA breaks. I'm not sure everyone could have done what he did though (obviously it's possible some could have done better). I think it takes a certain kind of coach to do what he's been able to do.

I think someone needs to send them the choo-choo meme for future use. It’s the least we can do for them.

Exactly. Plus, in addition to the CUSA championships and Division titles, I think Clark's team's are 4-1 against Holtz and LA Tech since football returned to UAB's campus in 2017. Honestly, I really didn't think I would have to explain all this. The coaching comparisons are NO COMPARISON! That's why I made the joke in the first place.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Lou called in a favor for Skip…That’s the beauty of having a legendary coach as you’d dad….unlimited dumpster fires I suppose.
Skip is a bottom feeder that does nothing more than ride the wave of his father’s success. Watch one of Lou’s speeches on YouTube and then watch one of Skip’s generic “we competed” speeches. When you see the two side by side, it feels like you’re seeing two different species, little long father and son.

Doubt Lou had to help with this one. Games start in April and all 8 teams will play every game in Birmingham. Two teams do not even have a coach yet and all but one of the coaches are reruns. Plus only one other coach even had a job in 2021. Only thing they have going in a positive direction is $150 million from Fox.

They've got FOX & NBC backing them / 1st game will be broadcast on both networks. I don't think it will last though. I think Spring leagues need to focus on being AA/AAA for the NFL. Also, they need to be a proving ground for up-and-coming coaches/referees and place for the NFL to test out rule changes. The only way one of these will work is if it has the backing of the NFL (IMO).

I agree -
And I bet the vast majority of the $150 million isn't in cash - i.e. cost of promotion/advertising and broadcast costs
They won't make it a half season

I think that's the key, and I haven't heard anything resembling support from them on this one.

Re: Betcha Didn't See That Coming
It will really depend on the QBs they can get. Poor or average QB play will kill this quickly.
-
Re: Betcha Didn't See That Coming
Skip's predictable offense will be stellar.
-
Re: Betcha Didn't See That Coming
Not sure any kind of minor league for football will ever make it as an NFL feeder. The game is so violent and every hit they suffer even in “semi-pro” level will squash potential at the next level.

A Holtz team is high energy, fast, speed and space... Here it is straight from the horse's mouth - a stallion even. https://twitter.com/USFLStallions/st...29343990059009
-
Re: Betcha Didn't See That Coming
Yeah, so he’s essentially saying he’s going to have a team that plays nothing like he coaches. We’ll see about that. One thing is probably for sure no lead will be safe in the 4th quarter.

I knew that when I posted. Half the schedule might not be enough.

Re: Betcha Didn't See That Coming
This USFL rebirth thing is just weird. All games will be played in Birmingham, AL. That pretty much means 98% empty seats for a majority of the games.
It will be interesting to see how Holtz, Sumlin, and Fedora do knowing that college has been the their highest level of coaching experience. Of course I tend to believe coaching at some P5 schools is a higher tier than USFL coaching.

I will admit Holtz is a clown.

Holtz wouldn’t even be considered an energy guy at the nursing home.

Every FBS job is better than the USFL. As sportdawg said earlier the only way one of these leagues makes it is if the NFL backs it. The reason the NFL never backs any of these start-ups is because they already have the best minor league program in American sports. It is called the NCAA and it supplies tons of NFL ready talent every year for free. Any new football league in America is already in third place.
Even if we are terrible in Sonny's first year (I think we will be great), Tech will have a team in 2023. Skip could win all his games this year and his league fold before 2023.
Most of these coaches were not even in football this past season. Nobody is leaving a stable job for this. They were all like Skip, jobless. The only thing this league has going for it is if MLB is not played while their season is ongoing, even then the football will be so bad people will not be very interested.
-

The only ‘energy’ Holtz puts into anything is his interview excuse making. I seriously think he put more thinking and effort into that than he did his game planning and preparation. Then of course once the game began it was all about following the same old boring predictable routine and coasting to the final whistle.
-
Re: Betcha Didn't See That Coming
I understand running plays from a script for the first series or 2, then making adjustments at half and running scripted stuff for the first series after the half. But the entire game under Holtz was about 6 plays. Our pickup games at recess were more complex.

Good point. That's why a new league should try to replace the NCAA instead of the NFL.
They should recruit 17-18-19 yr old kids that simply don't belong in college or just don't want to spend all that time in classes.
They ought to make this new league a "sports college". Play football (and get paid) but also teach the kids how to be coaches, how to be high school and college level coaches.

Nice I think Rodriguez was in the XFL first go around? That means he’s viewed as the top tackle in the league. Not gonna lie, I don’t remember much from him at Tech… but as an OT.. it’s like a CB… if no one recognizes you, you aren’t getting beat.

J'Mar hyphenating the name now. That will probably help out a lot.
-
Re: Betcha Didn't See That Coming / USFL thread
The J’Mar hate that still occurs here is nauseating. He was the conference offensive POY and Holtz was his coach. That’s a damn achievement.
I hope J’Mar does well and succeeds in anything he does. He battled it out for us (quite well) while you all ate popcorn with friends and family..waiting for a moment to criticize him. It’s BS honestly

What does that even mean. Do you know why he is hyphenating his last name? I don’t, so I’m not going to speak about it helping him or not. What do you mean by help him?

Re: Betcha Didn't See That Coming / USFL thread
We lost a games, a chance at a conference championship, a national ranking, and a shot at a NYD bowl game thanks to Smith's dope smoking and refusing to get clean for tests he KNEW were coming. Holtz knew what was happening.

I don't hate on him. As PD said he cost us a lot. PoY is fickle, remember Konkol has won CoY before so you know how much it counts on the field. But he's not here anymore and I'm not going to root for him to fail.
Same for Holtz. Can't live life like that.
Maybe I'm in a giving mood after not choking in an important game :D

If pot is legal in the USFL they could be fun to watch. Maybe pick up Trent Taylor and Carlos Henderson sometime and they’d really put on a show.

Trent just finished playing in a Super Bowl, so I doubt he'll be looking at the USFL unless he can't find a spot somewhere. Dixon and Henderson might be persuaded though.

I don’t think they are thugs. They are all very good football players. Not “NFL good” but they could certainly light up this league. Would be fun to see.

Trent has proven he is NFL good more than once. The other two never came close and the other two had known issues that kept them in hot water.

Please define “thugs” for us since you question our interpretation of your post. You obviously don’t have to, but my view of PawDawg is a stubborn person that isn’t willing to admit their obviously implemented racism he makes obvious and then defends.

I’ll come to his defense. A thug is a violent criminal with little ambition other than creating havoc selfishly.
Carlos and J’Mar are not thugs.
But, there are tons of white thugs so I doubt this was a racial issue in Pawdawg’s mind. If Trent had had run-ins with authority over drug use or breaking team rules, I’m sure PD would have put him I t the “thug” category too…. even though this is not the definition of a thug.
