So who is watching the debut of the USFL with the Birmingham Stallions hosting the New Jersey Generals?
Jamar and Skip looking pretty good
And they win 28-24 with Ja’mar scoring at the end of the game. It’s Rock Star Time!
Make no mistakes there are no Steve Young, Reggie White, Jim Kelly, or Herschel Walker in this USFL. I did like all the camera angles, the helmet cams and having so many live mics. J'Mar did a good job on his feet. Wish he would have did more of that at Tech. He missed some open passes, but this is a very forgiving league. It's football, gives you some football to watch until college season starts.
Also keep in mind, if the Generals had a kicking game the Stallions lose tonight.
Congrats Skip!
I only watched the first half, but did see the Stallions pulled out a win at the end. The announcers were spot on in saying Skip was running a college offense and J'Mar was overthrowing his receivers. On one play, the announcers noted the offensive line didn't block anyone. As the old saying goes, the more things change, the more they stay the same. Any doubts I "may" have had about whether it was time for Tech to move on past Holtz as the HC were wiped away. The league and the players were different, but the coaching was the same. They were fortunate to come away with the win.
I just noticed that ALL of the USFL games will be played in Birmingham!?!? That's every team/every game until the playoffs (which will all be in Canton, OH)???? How does that make any sense at all??? Why do the other cities even have teams??? How will they possibly build a fan base? The Houston/Michigan game being played on NBC yesterday in Birmingham had totally emptied stands! Talk about small time thinking! No wonder Skip fits in so well.
USFL will play all 2022 games in Birmingham - ProFootballTalk (nbcsports.com)
The playoffs will be in Canton due to a previous commitment in Birmingham.Quote:
The approach eliminates all travel costs, an important consideration given that the primary purpose of the games will be to put them on TV, and to use them as the impetus for legal gambling in the states that allow it. Where the games will be played doesn’t matter. Whether anyone attends the games doesn’t matter.
What matters is that, after football season ends, gamblers will have football games on which to wager.
As noted by Johnson, the initial eight teams could begin playing games in the cities for which they are named. That obviously will depend on whether and to what extent the USFL generates sufficient revenue to justify those expenses.

The league will utilize the stadiums at no cost. Three entities have committed up to $3.5 million to offset losses at the stadiums (revenue will be generated by ticketing, concessions, and parking): CVB (up to $ 2 million), Birmingham ($1 million), and Jefferson County ($500,000).
Well, looking at the stands the little bit I saw yesterday, tickets and concessions won’t be making a dent.
This won't last a year. Especially with I watched on TV Saturday night and Sunday afternoon (about 30 minutes each game). Especially a Skip Holtz type offense!
They could have done so much more like for instance: pick cities without NFL already: Austin or SanAntonio (instead of Houston); Baton Rouge (NO), Orlando (Tampa), Columbus (Pittsburgh), Hartford (NJ) and maybe Trenton or better yet Charleston, WV (PHilly).... Grow a fan base...then work with the NFL for some help as a 'minor league'?
This looks like a very cheap way of filling TV time and gambling??? Who's going to bet on this crap?
Birmingham better have a deep group of running backs. They are going to need them based on some of the hits I saw in the few minutes I watched with those delayed handoff plays.
I was pulling for him. and J'Mar.
I don't think they half-assed it in either 2020 or 2021. But your point about competence is valid.
His DC in 20/21 had a philosophy that had little chance of working at Tech, and he never adjusted from the first time we blew a lead in a big game at Marshall in 2014 to the debacle in Starkville in 2021.
But he's a good man who turned in a lot of very good seasons at Tech.
And he blew out the Cajuns twice.
Skip and Jamar move to 3-0 in the USFL.
Now 5 and 0 and the only undefeated team in the USFL. I have actually been watching at least some of the USFL games each weekend. I like being able to listen in on the chatter from the coaches and the referees. I think having all the games in one place will probably ensure the league lasts at least one whole season (since it eliminates travel costs).
JS still under throws receivers down the field. If he could put the ball in front of 4.3 guys 20 yards day the field, he would be in the NFL right now.
I don't think I misheard - one of the TV announcers during the Stallions 6th win Saturday night said Skip is known for being aggressive (in his play calling). Somebody is doing something right as the Stallions are the only undefeated team in the league.
If he called anything other than a delayed handoff, that is aggressive, for Holtz.

Dixon should be next (but they just got Bo Scarborough out of Bama)
That seems like an advantage for the coaches recently out of the college game. They'd have a decent idea of some guys that might be out there and what they can do (their guys or guys they coached against).
Stallions are now 7-0

I wish I had been keeping count of the number of times "Louisiana Tech" was mentioned during the game on Saturday. It was a bunch. I believe there were times when J'Mar Smith, O'Shea Dugas, Adrian Hardy, and Bobby Holly were all on the field for the Stallions at the same time.
